Voice Reference for Arko

Namon'Nazzarr:
Can you please indicate your race to the left of where it says Level 3 Wizard?

Can you please copy+paste the text of Telekenetic Punch and Physical Enhancement onto the sheet?

Can you give me some flavor on how Namon got the traits he has, and how/why they apply to him?

Don't forget your free craft and profession skills.

Background - Too short. Way too short. I want details. Your story is completely generic. It could be any wizard's backstory.

Nemesis - Your nemesis needs to be one specific person, you need to have a good reason to want to kill them, and they you. They also basically need to be in the Aspis Consortium or they won't be on the island and the feat will never get resolved.

There are numerous spelling errors throughout the profile. There should be a spellchecker in your browser or on the message board, please use it.

Shinjuko:

You're forgetting to add your dex bonus to damage with your black blade.

Formatting looks great! Good work :) I live in China so seeing the old kanji (same as Chinese) is cool.

You didn't close one of your italics tags after the word ronin.

Excellent submission!

Coming along with my submission, a few questions:

Is Profession(Criminal) an acceptable profession? I wanted to take it to sort of represent an ability to organize other criminals/ oversee illegal operations/ exc. Sort of a crime boss sort of skill, as per the "good fella" approach mentioned in earlier PMs.

The Family ties drawback is representing not his immediate family(he has none), but rather a larger network of criminal "family". He's had some help clawing his way towards the top of the underworld, and as a result there are times when he has to repay some favors.

I'm torn on the story feat.

I think town tamer could be interesting from a criminal perspective, But I'm not sure how he'd work towards the completion until there's a settlement established.

The other option is Shamed, having suffered a cruel childhood due to his unusual "celestial" appearance, silver and white plumes of feather covering his entire body by the time he reached puberty.

hmm, opinions?

Either of the story feats will probably see about equal use. I think Shamed fits the character better. Shame often makes people hard and violent.

Profession (Criminal) is a bit vague. If you pair it with alchemy you can have Profession (Drug Dealer), or with craft (weapons) and profession (contract killer) or something like that. Something as specific as Weapons or Armor versus Smithing.

How about craft(bow) and profession(contract killer)?

Arko Caed wrote:

Craft (Bows) and Profession (Assassin) will work. Contract killer sounds too weird on second thought.

Still open?
I lovelovelove this concept, but just discovered the thread.

The details of when recruitment closes, and how I will make selections are in the original post of this thread.

I'm going to reluctantly withdraw from this one.

DM Jelani, your creativity is wonderful. This looks to be a fabulous game.

I had some MAD character concepts I've been wanting to play for a bit... Druid and Inquisitor... but I just can get to a happy place on a 17 point build. That's on me.

Best of luck everyone.

Writing Sample:

A small shadow fell over the ground, slowly it grew larger until it was a monstrously large thing. Those near by looked up to see the form of a massive bird, to those in the know it was a giant vulture. Upon landing a rider could be made out, it was no surprise the guards quickly came. The rider had the look of a local with his black hair peaking beneath his white silk turban and exposed beard. Jumping off his saddle he dusted his white cotton robes and quickly presented his abadarian notarized papers to the waiting guards. The apparent keleshite smiled as they read his papers. Finally the guard nodded and stationed a pair near by to watch the giant bird. The rider thanked them repeatedly before making his way into the streets and being lose among the crowd.

Soon he made his way down a side street, his form shifting to that of a foreigner. His skin shifted to olive, his beard disappeared, hair changed to brown with hints of red, and eyes melted into sharp purple with bits of red. The change did not end with the physical as his clothes changed as well, his robes became blue with gold trim, a matching clock unfurled from his shoulders, a scarf snaking around him, dark lenses appeared over his eyes, and jewelry popped into existence around his neck and fingers.

Emerion made it to the meeting place mostly in his true form. He was always careful as one never knew who was watching. He showed his badge to the guard, nodding once allowed to enter. He notes the gold agent and other bronze agents before anything else. Then he scans the room along with everything else, he was never one for displays of wealth but he could understand it. Giving a bow to the gold agent and respectful nod to the others he speaks. "I am Emerion Nimlaidas, it is an honor to meet you all." He takes his seat while touching nothing as he was fine, with no desire to insult anyone by checking for poison.

Upon listening to what was said he nods in acknowledgement. "I don't suppose an aerial approach was attempted?" Regardless of the answer his thoughts go to details as the mission was vague. "Pardon me but the assignment seems open ended. Is our primary concern to establish a base or is it more of a survey in nature before committing more resources. After all a single treasure does not make a horde so to speak."

Stat Rolls (option B):
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 4) = 18 14
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 2) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 6) = 18 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 1, 3) = 7 6
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 5, 6) = 22 17
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 3, 4) = 13 12
reroll the 6: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 4, 6) = 17 15

For 12 14 14 15 15 17=39 pt. buy. Scanning the thread to see if that is ridiculous enough for a reroll.

Srop the 14 to a 12 and then sure.

10 10 12 12 13 18=24 pt buy. That should be acceptable.

Cool ... probably go with the first set, modified.

Emerion:
Crunch:
Can you explain to me where you're getting those SLAs? Reveal Weakness at least should be a supernatural ability, not a spell like. Any class or school special abilities you get, please copy+paste the text into the profile for ease of reference.

"*Crafted by Emerion with restrictions of use by a wizard with ranks in spellcraft. " Can you give me a rules reference for this? I looked through magic item creation rules and couldn't find anything saying you could do that.

Where are you getting a mount from? If it's purchased, no. Buy a horse.

Can you please create a gear sections with breakdowns of the cost of everything and its weight?

Backstory/Personality/Appearance:
Immediate thing that strikes me is the grammar mistake in the first sentence. Who was Nim's mother? His real father? How/where did Victor find him? What kind of skills did Victor have? (It's never spelled out, after reading the whole thing I see he's some kind of rangger/barbarian type)

The line about traps seems incongruous. Why does he need to trap food if he's studying at the academy in the city? How did he get accepted to academy? Who were his teachers?

What kind of relics did they find? What kind of undead were in the ruins? Why did the undead follow them on a several week journey? They don't need to sleep or eat or rest. They would have easily exhausted Nim and his father before they reached Nantambu.

"The consortium did not seek to steal culture and knowledge or control it merely profit from it. Their sole purpose was profit and wealth, that which did not bring them such things was of no concern to them." This makes little sense to me, the two sentences are contradictory. The Pathfinders are a neutral organization that tries to avoid conflict. Aspis will take profit however they can get it, stealing knowledge included.

How old is Nim? Is he asexual, a virgin, promiscuous? Why is he cold? Why is he loyal? Is his only motivation the acquisition of more magical knowledge?

Overall, it's not bad. I especially like the nemesis story element, that's really good. There are a lot of disruptive grammar mistakes though, usually with sentence construction or unclear refferents. You also use passive voice so much that it makes it sound weird in some parts. You've got plenty of time to clean it up some and answer my questions :)

DM Jelani:

Crunch:

1) Any spell effect or use per day I normally put under SLA's so I don't forget I have them. Also makes it easy to look over for me. I can move them somewhere else if you want. Deathwatch comes from his deathwatch eyes magical item, disguise self from his hat of disguise item, reveal weakness is a school power, and pyrotechnics is a SLA from being a aasimar. Added a spoiler for school powers.

2) The rules for item creation in core states that by adding certain restrictions you can reduce the cost of creation for magical items. On top of my trait's cost reduction it cuts out a fair chunk. It's on page 549 of the core book, also can be found in d20pfsrd.com.

3) Animal Archive. Yes I bought it along with the needed items to ride it, I take it your restricting mounts then. Was not cheap you know. Removed. xP

4) Done, got a heavyload belt due to weight. Also glad you asked for the break down as my math was a little off so I tweaked gear a bit.

Backstory/Personality/Appearance:

1) Grammar is not my best friend, it's a work in progress type of thing. Nim's mother was a disguised half Peri that charmed Victor and erased his memory afterwards. Nim was found in the Mwangi Expanse near one of Victor's camping sites. As for what Victor was in terms of class and such. My idea of him would be Ranger with the Wild Stalker archtype with maybe a dip in Horizon Walker. Really I kept it vague as I did not want to make him look too strong or weak.

2) Without going into a lot of detail. You may want to check out Heart of the Jungle if you have it concerning Nantambu. It is a city but not a normal one in a lot of ways. He trapped more for profit/trade then food. As for Magaambya it is a place of learning, not so much a traditional academy as well. Sense native wizards are few and far between in the jungle they would hardly turn away a promising youth like Nim right. As for teachers their is little official info on Magaambya to draw from, I can make something up if needed. They would be shaman like types I would think. ;)

3) Cyclopean relics from Ghol-Gan, if you need more detail let me know. Mostly zombies and skeletons. You may have missed it during the end, the undead were being controlled by Lydur who was after the relics. That answers the next question as well, the undead did not need to rest but Lydur did. Without his direction the undead would be easy to lose with Victor's skills.

4) The Pathfinder organization as a whole may be as you said. But not all it's members are the same or share the same view. He is speaking of his view and experiences. He see's the pathfinders as secretive controlling people who disrespect knowledge and culture by trying to control and regulate it on a grand scale. That is his view, while the Aspis Consortium is only interested in profit. He could buy knowledge from the consortium, yet the pathfinders would never sell what they deemed unfit to be known. That is why he considers them far worst then the consortium.

5) I would place him early to mid twenties. He is a healthy young man but keeps his affairs mostly to the kind involving a transaction. He is not out to break hearts or deceive women. He is often seen as cold but he is simply professional, he likes to keep things separate. As to his loyalty, it is a matter of mutual benefit. The acquisition of magical knowledge is one of his motivations but not the only one. Power, wealth, devotion to Nethys, and what he could do with what he acquires are other strong motivations as well. Even gaining relationships akin to what he shared with his father is part of his drive.

P.S. I wrote a lot of stuff and now this, before bed so yeah the later I stay up trying to finish something I start the more mistakes I make. I will try to polish things up when I get a chance. Let me know of any changes that need to be made.

Emerion:

Crunch:

1) Okay, just make sure you mark them as Supernatural abilities or SLAs or spells from items, because they all use different rules. A simple (Su), (Ex), (Item) or (SLA) after the ability will work.

2) Alright, found it. Honestly I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with you being able to craft magic items for yourself at 25% market price. That effectively gives you 75% more wealth than everyone else. I'll have to think about it a little more.

3) I'm not comfortable with allowing exotic animals to be purchased, no. I didn't state that anywhere because I wasn't anticipating it/aware that prices for such things existed. I'd prefer all mounts besides your traditional horses and camels to come from a class feature.

4) Thanks, that looks much better.

Fluff:
All that sounds legit. Just add as many details as you can think of to the backstory and do your best with the grammar. You've got 12 days to finish, so no rush. I find reading what I've written aloud helps me catch most of my mistakes (trust me I make a lot, I just edit most things several times before posting them).

Hrm, if I drop the Int to 14 that brings the point buy to 25 points leaving me at, unless you’re willing to let me keep it as is. Int doesn’t play too huge into my character, but I like the idea of an intelligent bruiser:

STR: 17
DEX: 11 + 2: 13
CON: 15 + 2: 17
INT: 17
WIS: 10
CHA: 8

So after some thought, I think that I will play a Hobgoblin Fighter (Lorewarden) 2 / Monk (Maneuver Master) 1. I think the use of a whip is appropriate considering the character is a Hobgoblin. I will take the racial "Pit Boss" ability.

Still kicking around backstories, but I think that the character might be a traitorous former Pathfinder turned Aspis Agent that spent some time in the Mwgani Expanse running or working the mining operations at the Aspis camp where they keep Ejukai slaves. All in all the idea is starting to come together.

I think the build would go like this:

Level 1: Fighter (Lorewarden) Weapon Focus, exotic weapon proficiency (whip)
Level 2: Monk (Manuver Master) Improved Trip
Level 3: Fighter (Lorewarden) whip mastery, power attack

You can keep that set as is, and since it's option B you don't have to take them in order. You can rearrange them. Sounds like a fun build. I took it you learned from our OOC in the Wrath of the Righteous game :P

The Exchange

*nod* I did!

If I can rearrange the stats I might do that. The Manuver Master is the key imo to this build, as it will let me do two trips as a flurry of blows to any target within 15'.

Or a trip then an attack.

Strength: 3d6 + 1 ⇒ (4, 1, 1) + 1 = 7

Rerolling the Strength roll: 3d6 + 1 ⇒ (6, 4, 5) + 1 = 16

Strength 16, Dexterity 12, Constitution 14, Intelligence 14, Wisdom 10 and Charisma 11. 23 point buy. I'll have a think about what I want to run with then.

Fluff

Will polish over time, just don't blame me for the wall of text. You asked for it, remember that. xP

Wrapped up gear and other tidbits. Tried to clean it up a bit, but it's a mile long yet.

Dark Archive

Reznik's profile is now complete (sort of). Still not entirely happy with the background but it's as good as done. He still has some coin available but not sure what to buy at the moment.

A secret meeting:

I don’t like this. Not one bit.

Reznik looked at the people sitting around the mahogany table. He guessed most if not all were Bronze agents but to him, most seemed like ordinary thugs. After the invitation from the Consortium he had sent word to his superior in the church. His answer had been to infiltrate the meeting, gather information and report back. Whatever happened next was his judgment, and his judgment alone.

He locked eyes with the female Chelaxian while she spoke. She wore a golden amulet, making her one of the higher ups in the Consortium. He tried to get a read on her but somehow her eyes betrayed neither thought or emotion. Cursing under his breath, Reznik averted his gaze.

Not a good start.

Carefully he awaited the other guests’ reactions. A young half orc clad in armor was first to respond. When he rose, Reznik saw he wore the symbol of Abadar on his neck. Surprised and intrigued at the same time Reznik studied the half breed’s speech and demeanor.

I wonder what his deal is. I don’t remember any servants of Abadar stationed here?

Next was a cloaked man, his face hidden in shadow. Did he just ask if he could kill? The Gold agent did not respond. Quite tight with the information eh?

Several other agents spoke. Then Reznik rose from his chair, looked at the other agents in the room, before addressing the Gold agent.

It seems you have quite a conundrum here. I’ve only recently joined the Consortium and still unsure of her exact workings. However, if there is one thing you’ll need on your expedition of this unknown island, it is protection for the people who will explore and live there…

He moved his cloak to the side so onlookers could see the symbol of Abadar visible on his armor.

…Protection I will try to provide.

Devram Coates

Expedition Meeting:

Devram coughs into his handkerchief. Blood. Damn. Not again, not now. He wipes his mouth and tries to hide the evidence. He looks around at the group assembled at the table to see if anyone noticed. Unconsciously, he touches his chest where the scarring was. Would I be here if they knew how close I was to dying? What am I saying? The Consortium knows. And still they want me? He refocuses on the Chelaxian woman and her gold medallion. What is going on here?

As the others talk quietly and take some food, Devram is busy tracing the intricate carvings on the table with his fingers. This is good work. I doubt they would let me study it. Take it home even! He chuckles to himself. He looks up and catches the eye of a Tian woman. He nods to her and turns back to study the Chelaxian woman who has just begun to rise.

As she begins talking about the banks of fog in the ocean, Devram’s mind wanders again. The Aspis were farther reaching than he ever knew in his childhood. He tries to think back to that time when he left Restov. Little did he know the dangers of the world then, and just what could be taken from him. He snaps back at the mention of “demons on some island.” A trek into an unknown land? Facing possible ‘demons’? Gods, it’s the Mwangi Expanse all over again. He still couldn’t remember what happened. He had no idea who had cut the hole in his chest or why. It seemed like three or three and a half weeks of his life were just gone. He coughs into his handkerchief again. More blood. His health was taken from him last time.

As the woman finishes, Devram already knows where this is going. Lead an expedition. Go off into unknown danger. Bring back profit. Death. Sacrifice. A Tainted Soul. And yet, I’ll do it. I knew I would when I stepped in here. Because as much satisfaction as carving a table, even one like this, could bring, I always hope to be challenged to a duel. Because that Dueling Sword has sat in the trunk for almost five years. Because how much longer can I stand to make chairs, shelves, and stupid little figurines? His hand runs down the hilt of his sword.

”Fine. I’ll go.” He tilts his head as if just realizing something. ”But, of course, you didn’t ask, did you?” He looks around the table with a smirk and then leans back. ”How many people will be in the expedition?”

Oooh, team Abadar in da house. I can see an awful lot of RP possibilities there, especially since Penance doesn't like most priests. (not that Reznik is a priest exactly, but it's probably how Penance would see him at first. :)

Poor Devram, 6 con! I'm amused we both have Carpentry. We could carpent the heck outta things! Shush that's totally a word.

Not sure if I'm right here, but wouldn't you get to re-roll that 6?

Well glad no one has a problem with Nethys. They could find their room trapped. Nothing like a trip wire to wake you up in the morning. xP

Penance says you get to try that trick once, pretty boy.

I have a small question about the in-character scene: can we do a back and forth with the woman (roughly guessing her personality as cold and calculating) to make the scene more organic or should it just be the PC talking?

Expedition Meeting:

Aerin has answered the summon how could she not. It was a meeting, but there was often opportunities to be found when meeting with the higher ups.

Once nicely seated in the back she had studied the face and tasted the atmosphere of the ambient temperature. She could feel the exaltation brewing.

She listen closely during the briefing. She controlled her emotions tightly for this could be the opportunity she was waiting for. A big operation like that usually called for administrative supervisions. Especially one where lots of resources would be poured in and the financial backers wanted results.

Of course she let other declare themselves first. She was quite curious as to the presence of the Abadarian.

Fortunately these seem tho be more of the martial or divine preachers than the accountants.

She perceived the caressing motion the last to speak had on his sword. But his choice of words where lackluster in her opinion. But then again she had no idea who the gold agent would chose.

The time feels right for me to introduce myself to the others.

Aerin Starsong, Account manager with the White Asp Bank for this Expedition. she said as she stood up and looked at all the faces turned toward her. She smiled to them and sat down again.

Talos The Exalted wrote:

Technically yes, but this was before all the new rolling rules and I decided to keep it. It helped fuel his backstory, so it's all good. Besides, Aldori's are known for not getting hit rather than being tough. It's the AOEs which will be his bane.

Jelani, I am going to be pressed for time this week, and I just got accepted into a mid-level campaign, so I am sadly going to have to bow out here. I hope this game goes well for you. The current crop of applicants looks nothing short of great. :)

If you like, that's fine. Though there's no guarantee anything you make her say will be canon.

Understood. I'm sad I won't get to see another of your undoubtedly fabulous characters, but at least I've got you hooked in my other game ;)

Reznik:

Background/Personality/Appearance:
Looks good. It'd be nice to have him working with the Consortium a little longer. Maybe the orc incident was his "in" into the A.C. and then over the next year or two he was assigned missions guarding shipments from Cheliax to Garund or something. Up to you, I just don't see him making Bronze after one mission. Your personality section is a pretty good description of me IRL, except I'm not a mercenary. :P As for his first motivation, damn, he is going to have a lot of monitoring to do. Aspis' operations are probably criminal as often as they are legitimate. Does he openly display his allegiance to Abadar? Where/when did he learn to smith? That's not something you learn in a couple days.

Crunch:
I didn't see any mistakes. Well built character. How are you planning to advance him? As a pure inquisitor?

Devram:

Crunch:
How are you getting a weapon attack and an unarmed strike? I'm not seeing flurry or anything that would allow that. The rest looks fine.

Background:
"His anger and confusion was deeper" should be deep. "That part of his was gone. " should be him. Didn't notice anything else. It gives me a good handle on Devram. I really dig that you are willing to play with a 6 con, and the dark ritual story. Good work :)

Aerin:

"Back of Aerin":
Who sent her to the Ossuary? Who are her parents (beyond her father was a priest)? How did she come to live on the Material Plane? Why was she destined to be a great priestess of Pharasma? Was there a prophecy, or someone told her, or what? She's not blind, why do you say she is? Why exactly was she kicked out of the temple? It would be impossible for her to not know that she wasn't human from a fairly young age. How did she find out she was adopted? Where did she train in banking? Who took her in there? The line about Robin Hood is anachronistic and unnecessary. The White Asp bank doesn't exist in Golarion. Where did she go? What specifically made her want an artifact? Did she meet a wealthy investor who had one?
Are you German or something? You keep capitalizing all your nouns.
Your personality section could use a lot more detail.

Crunch:
Don't see any mistakes.

@DM Jelani:

I have cleared up some of Talos's background problems, and some errors in grammar.
I have changed the demon story a bit, but not by much. If you think this still doesn't work I will probably cut it out and change the story.
Added reasons for Talos to hate Brax, and joining the Consortium. Also, do you think the backstory on joining the Consortium would work, or do they operate differently?

I won't have time to read over it until later, but just from first glance it already looks much better.

Hey Jelani, not sure yet if this is wise but you've (unsurprisingly) created another very enticing campaign so I'm considering throwing my hat in the ring. If I do, I'm thinking of an alchemist. Personality might be the Natural Philosopher/Ben Franklin/Sir Francis Bacon idea I'd mentioned off thread...or might end up more as an apolitical inventor who's not particularly interested in who funds or benefits from his exciting work (I always liked the line from Tom Lehrer's song Werner von Braun ("'Once ze rockets are up who cares vere zey come down. Zat's not my department,' says Werner von Braun").

Either way, I have this image of a Tiefling Gnome. His mother would've been a gnomish archeologist of some wealth and standing, whose desire for newness led her to seduce and mate with a wide variety of outsiders, and as a result he'd have an odd set of siblings, including Ifrit, Slyph, and whatever else can mix with Gnomes. I imagine that gnomish culture makes being a tiefling gnome less of a stigma and more of a marvelous curiosity, though of course he'll have faced stigma from outside camps.

I've never rolled up a tiefling before. How does the "Variant Tiefling Abilities" table work? Does every tiefling roll on it? is it an optional replacement for their SLA?

Are the expanded aasimar/tiefling options available as well? The variant tables, I mean. Poking around with the available races to see if something jumps out at me. In between playing Baldur's Gate (thanks the other thread, haha)
The alternate heritages are fine, but if you want one of the abilities off the table take the feat and roll for it.

There's a feat you can take only at first level for Tieflings that allows you to roll 3 times on the d100 chart and pick the result you want (Fiendish Heritage).

What Kagehiro said. Sounds like a cool concept :)

I wanna be an old man. Damn you, von Braun!

@GM Jelani:
As for Reznik's first motivation, he's probably aware they're not the nicest organization around (and that's saying a lot). He just wants to investigate how deep the rabit hole really goes, and put a stop to it if necessary.

I'll try to adapt the backstory so that he did some more work for the A.C (so much shorter!). However I'd like for him to remain one of the newer members as a means to RP him deeper in the inside.

Reznik normally does not show his allegiance to Abadar. The reason he openly 'flashes' his symbol of Abadar during the meeting is twofold:
- Sensing (or thinking) he is sort of the underdog in the room, he wants to show the Gold agent his allegiance as if to say I'm a sanctioned member of the Church of Abadar and Abadar shares interest in colonizing and bringing law to that forsaken island. This support makes me a worthwhile asset. In his mind, this is Reznik's trump card to get selected.
- Second, he showed it to provoke Penance. The sight of the half orc intrigues Reznik and he wants to see his reaction.

Smithing: I guessed working with his father in the smithy during his childhood years learned him the basics. If you want I'll put some more attention to it in my background.

As for advancement: this will depend on how the campaign goes (I only have a loose 'teamworky' build in mind). He could go either full inquisitor, more multiclass fighter or even grey gardener or hellknight (if permitted, the opportunity arises and Reznik swings that way during the campaign). In short: anything goes.

Penance: I had this LN inquisitor of Abadar in mind (originally he had full plate too!), and when I saw your submission I was all like: No why did he do that. After all, there was some overlap between our characters.

However, after some juggling with stats and equipment, I too realize the RP potential and just ample fun we 'could' have! Penance does seem to have quite a temper (and probably has trouble hiding it) which will surely make him a pleasure to work with ;) Haha!

Great minds think alike, I guess! Wasn't trying to harsh your buzz >___<

Err, no buzz harshed ;)

Just make sure you keep in mind that Abadar's main difference in thinking with the Aspis Consortium is putting the whole of civilization over the individual. Other than that, their doctrines are very similar.

The rest sounds good.

Talos:
The background flows much better now, and make much more sense. Thanks for reworking it.
