If you hate her then why make a back-story for her? I couldn't play a character that I hated personally.

If you feel that she's squishy and has limited usage, maybe that can be fixed.

But then maybe back-story and personality, etc will make her more imaginative and make you hate her less.

Well. FML. Tonight was my Runelords game. The party is level 8.

They're fighting ogres. They fast track straight to the boss room. Initiative begins.

The party wizard runs up to hit the Ogre barbarian boss to attempt and Bestow Curse him. Rolls a 1, missing.

Ogre barbarian boss goes. Rolls....... a natural 20. Confirms by rolling an 18. (2d8+27)x3 + 2d6 (bane weapon). Party wizard goes squish.

So Riftun see, everything I roll like to kill PCs on the first round of combat D: it's not just you >>;

The party was down to 1 left standing (2 dead, 1 unconscious), at 2hp. SO CLOSE to TPK, but they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Was an incredibly stressful but fun night.

-----------------------

Riftun: don't play something you won't like. You don't HAVE to play an arcane caster - play a bard or something if you like. There is always room for 2 bards in a party, the play styles vary enough that you wouldn't step on Lipp's toes (even though he's hard to see!)

I have an idea for a ranged rogue if that would work? >.>'

Ranged rogues are hard to pull off, not a lot of opportunity to get sneak attack in. But I hope not to make this too combat focused, so go ahead!

Arcane Trickster can make ranged rogues a little easier just saying.

Are you saying for me to take Arcane Trickster? Or for someone else to? XD I'm such a neewwwwbbbb =P

If it looks entertaining for you, otherwise don't.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I want to always do a minimum 1 round of combat a day.... I know sometimes it's hard to get on at specific times, but the game hangs (and quite often dies) when you don't post for a day during combat.

I will skip anyone who hasnt taken their turn if they don't post this evening, so we can continue.

Male Human Oracle of the Heavens/1 (HP: 11 of11)

That wizard should have NEVER run into melee, especially without mirror images and other defensive spells up. That is what your familiar is for! Better yet summon a monster to damage/inconvenience your foe. Anyway, Riftrun it seems you like the manipulative/ support kind of character. Those are always going to be squishy. Just remember that you need to play them cautiously. Distance is their friend. Let the rogue and fighter types go put themselves in danger. Hang back and REALLY win the fight, letting them think their damage dealing mattered. A fighter is just a summoned monster that someone else care whether they lived or died 8-).

Whoop,s I fully intended to post last night but I passed out right after the gym haha...

Description: Jix Rissi is a lithe, jet black furred ratfolk with a toned, though slight, physique that should have made her appear rather attractive were it not for her extremely vulgar and intimidating attitude. She has a long pink tail that hangs low to the ground and jade green eyes. Her favorite jewelery consists of a series of three golden earrings on her left ear and a golden ring three quarters of the way down her tail inscripted with Draconic writing. The garb she wears consists of her leather armor which is shapely in design and has a low V-cut in to about an inch below the belly button, as well as a black scarf she wears wraped around her head and over her mouth revealing just her eyes to hide her face from human civilizations who often find ratfolks appearances to be distasteful. She has a streak or red warpaint going down either side of her snout under the scarf.

Background: Jix "The Jinx" Rissi was born into a fairly standard ratfolk community in the Dragon Empires. That being that it wasn't what many human would consider a standard way to raise a child. Being that the Rissi tribe was not originally from the Dragon Empires but was instead an offshoot of a burrow from the Inner Sea Region. As such Jix's clan was a traveling group of caravan traders that roved from town to town on the back's of their giant rat mounts loaded with all kinds of valuables to ship back to the Inner Sea Region from whence they were based out of for enormous profit. It was here that Jix began to develop a case of sticky fingers when it came to objects of great interest to her which included, even as a younger girl, any sort of draconic art and, curiously, poisons. The young ratfolk girl absolutely adored poisons for some inexplicable reason, she loved the look of it, the smell of it, and, unfortunately for Jix on several occasions, the taste of it, and she would horde the stuff as she continues to do to this day. Because of her compulsive stealing habit she was forced to develop a quick whit when it came to weaseling her way out of trouble, though this very habit also turned out to be what saved her life.

As one might have expected, with beasts of burden laden with all sorts of valuables and not many strong defenders, a deadly raid from bandits was an inevitable occurrence, for Jix this day came when she was a mere 8 years old, which is around 12 in human years. On a seldom and lonely night far away from civilization as the family slept, bandit's descended from on high. Jix awoke to the sounds of her family being slaughtered as a man garbed in furs cleaved through her mother, father, and brothers in their family pavilion. The young ratfolk girl's jade eyes grew wide and she shock with terror as the man callously made his way through her family. As the slaughter went on Jix used the opportunity to sneak to the back of the pavilion where she hoarded her own personal, pilfered loot and grabbed the first weapon she saw. A crossbow and three bolts. As she pulled the weapon from her hoard, the whole pile shifted and drew the barbarian's attentions. Jix could feel her heart stop beating in her chest as the deranged man grinned at her murderously and charged, swinging his axe at the girl. Fortunately her petite form was small enough to slip under the bandit's legs as he struck leaving him only to rend a whole through the soft fabric at the back of the tent.

In an instant Jix was outside through the newly torn whole sprinting for her life, her over-sized weapon clutched tightly to her chest as she ran crying from the scene of the slaughter. But the enraged barbarian wasn't done yet. Hefting his monstrous weapon from the ground he pursed the young girl though the grassy knolls. Blinded by her tears the poor girl didn't notice the thick patch of mud before her from the recent rains and took a tumble onto her back covering her in mud. As she lay whimpering and gasping for air the bandit drew nearer and let out an uproarious laugh. He drew in for the kill and hefted his axe high when suddenly the girl spun around and loosed her bolt straight into the bandit's heart half by accident. The barbarian stood there stupidly for a moment, transfixed by the arrow that burrowed deep inside his chest, then plummeted to the ground falling right on top of the girl. As warm blood spilled over her the girl cringed and screamed and struggled to push off the body only managing the feat after quite some time due to the man's muscular proportions. She then dusted herself off, took one last look at her burning caravan and decided to put her tears behind her as she made her way to the nearest town. Korvosa.

In Korvosa the ratgirl spent much of the remainder of her childhood as an urchin, stealing to survive. Fortunately several of the local prostitutes took pity on her and helped her find places to sleep for the night or provided her with food when she could gain none of her own, and otherwise just kept the girl company. It was from them that she heard of the goddess Calistria and took to her worship. After all she was the goddess of revenge and making a strike to live another day and this spoke directly to the girl's experience that horrible night. While Jix had once been a sweet and jovial girl, after the attacks she was never the same, the seemed to grow into a bratty thug, mocking others and getting in brawls being her favorite past times.

As time when on and Jix blossomed into womanhood, while Sandru on one of his caravan journeys into the nearby town, he recognized the potential in the young woman immediately and asked her to join with his caravan. While Jix was reluctant at first she eventually agreed to join as a guard for the caravan for the sake of money and adding to her new hoard of items she established in Sandpoint and gaining a new host of people to tease and harass and though she wasn't objecting to harassing anyone and everyone she was never harder on anyone than Nakitu Jiyoki, a priest in training. There was just always something about him that irked her.. Through her journey's she has encountered all kinds of creatures including the reviled orcs and goblins. While many of the caravan's members outright refused business with such creatures Jix would have no issue marching into a village or camp full of the creatures and establishing a basic trade policy as her gruff mannerisms were well respected an acknowledged by the creatures. It was though this bravery that Sandru came to respect the girl and even become her friend despite the fact that she had picked up the nickname of "Jinx" from the other caravan members after they had heard of what happened to her original caravan so many years ago. Jix actually came to like the nickname and accepts it as a badge of honor now though and has a great deal of respect for Sandru for giving her this opportunity.

As of now she lives in a trade cart in Sandru's caravan and is currently on leave of the crew until there next mission. It is likely that she is at her favorite establishment at this moment, the Rusty Dragon. Looking to get a drink, chat with Sandru, or stir up some trouble by picking on that Nakitu kid again. But where in Calistria's name is he?

Just be aware it takes 21 HP damage to kill that rogue. Other then that it looks good.

I'll have to say I'm not at all comfortable right now with your introduction Jix. Going around kicking a dead party member, even if it was your character, is not a way to endear yourself with the group, and in character I can't think of a single reason I would go anywhere with you after that display. I'm having a hard time with this one.

I'm more thinking about removing an item from the body... There was no sleight of hand... is someone going to object?

The idea behind Jix is not to have an instantly likeable character as I've noticed that everyone else gets along in the party without any issue whatsoever. Which makes for easy adventuring sure but also leads to a bit of a boring roleplay section. Jix is the kind of character you will hate, and I did have your paladin specificly in mind for the most hatred sparking a little game of cops and robbers to take place throughout the game, but has the opertunity to be either changed for good or sent further down the path to evil depending on the character interactions with her.

The party will travel with her, like it or not, because they need an extra weapon and more importantly she has direct knowledge and interaction with these goblins having done bussiness with them in the past.

As far as changing her for good there are some odd habits of hers I will be spacing out through the game, one of which I already displayed and Khel alone caught onto. If you can figure out the meanings behind these things and act on them in such a way you will be one step closer to an alignment change ^^

I realize making a character like this isn't easy. But the die has already been cast.

Male Human Oracle of the Heavens/1 (HP: 11 of11)

You also should realize that a paladin will not travel with someone who is commiting evil acts, whether the paladin needs you or not. Now stealing isn't an evil act, but it IS unlawful. So a paladin will go to whatever reasonable lengths to correct it. Some conflict about such things can be fun, but total disregard for it will make the character unplayable in a largely good group.

The key is knowing that even CE people will follow basic social conventions to avoid excessive consequences. They are careful to hide their excesses in their own self-interest. I'm not saying that you should be pleasant, but only madmen, autistics, or someone who has the reasonable expectation of no consequences will act totally without regards to others' expectations. If you want to steal stuff, fine then either be more careful or realize that the group will not travel with you for long. And if you want to be annoying, then that is ok too, as long as you do not go too far overboard. My friends and I don't hang around totally annoying people, and our characters probably wouldn't either.

She won't always be so bad XD this was just an intro to start her off at the absolute lowest. From here she'll still be a bit rude but you'll see that she's a jerk with a heart of gold

I think you are about as far off of the mark as you possibly could be with this comment. The fact that you even negotiated with an evil creature in the past that had a habit of killing innocents will mark you as someone who cannot be trusted to a paladin.

Let me give you a quote:

Code of Conduct: A paladin must be of lawful good alignment and loses all class features except proficiencies if she ever willingly commits an evil act.

Additionally, a paladin's code requires that she respect legitimate authority, act with honor (not lying, not cheating, not using poison, and so forth), help those in need (provided they do not use the help for evil or chaotic ends), and punish those who harm or threaten innocents.

Associates: While she may adventure with good or neutral allies, a paladin avoids working with evil characters or with anyone who consistently offends her moral code.

In a nutshell what that means is if you consistently act without honor, Khelvor would simply dismiss himself from your association. That likely means walking away from the party all together for accepting those acts.

I noticed you had a ton of poison on your character, and I'll not even get into the fact that you can't start with such an absurd amount of poison, I'll leave that for the GM. But, you use that poison, and that perceptive little halfling paladin sees it, and you are committing an evil act. An honorless act. And it will spell a very quick end to all of this for one of those characters.

There is a reason I don't let people even consider playing chaotic neutrals in the campaigns I run, and you pretty much demonstrated it right off the bat.

If your idea behind your character was to create inter-party drama, congrats, you succeeded. Its a shame that isn't what makes a good game.

Alright well you are bringing up a whole lot of stuff that I didn't know that wasn't in the general rules as far as I saw but like said, I'm new @.@ I am sorry if I have offended you, however, that was never my intention. Also I was unaware that poison use was considered evil in the game that wasn't mentioned in the rules as far as I saw it. @.@ further there is no rule against me having as many poisons as I want provided that I can afford them (they were free) and that I could support their weight (they were weightless) if I have committed some infraction against the rules there or if dunebugg simply doesn't want to allow it then I shall change it but as it stands I submitted that to dunebugg for approval and nothing came of it. Also I don't intend for my character to be constantly stealing and never murdering or assaulting or anything of the like. So I don't think that should be too much of an issue.

I was intending to have some fun like in the movies with the sinister but lovable rogue character that helps out the heroes where there morals would stop them.

BUT I can see that this has caused undo drama I didn't see coming. I really do want to apologize to you Khel as you seem like a great guy and I was having fun RPing with you and Nakitu. Really, really sorry that I offended you so ;.;

If dunebugg allows it I will redo my intro so as to fit in more with party dynamics? Jix will be a lot more friendly and personable and not as prone to kicking dead bodies >.>' because I just want everybody to get along here.

Can ya forgive me Khel? ^^'

Oh also seeing as I won't be using this version of Jix anymore. The reason she is acting so particularly cruel right now and stealing Nakitu's beads is because she had a crush on him, like this crushes immature people have where they pick on the one they like, and is bursting her pain in cruelty and was trying to take the beads as a keepsake and honestly she did believe he would have miles to become a bed of flowers upon death ^^'

Interesting set of posts to come back to today!

@Riftun: You also have to keep in mind that Ameiko and Sandru will not ask you along if their friends don't like you. So having a character that's likeable to some extent (even if they can be abrasive at times), is important. The rogue character you describe is quite often needed... Where here it isn't.

About the poison, I haven't had a good chance to look over the rules yet.. But Khel is right. Not something to really be using around the paladin anyways.

No re-do's, just gotta pick up and dust off and move forward ;) Maybe Jix has finally met a group of people she can't just bully around, and needs to get used to it.

Male Halfling Bard 1 | AC 18 T 15 FF 14 | HP 10/10| F +2 R +6 W +2 | Init +4 | Perc +2

I think a paladin could certainly travel with this sort of character, unless the paladin is witnessing them commit evil acts... short of that, I think it is within the code of most paladins to associate with a person. But there's a bit of wiggle room depending on the type... Khelvor worships Erastil, an old fashioned sort who's not going to bend much on this type of thing. In another game, I play an oath of vengeance paladin of Ragathiel, who might be able to let such things slide a bit further.

I think it may be a challenge to play things out and not have it take center stage, but it can be done. I think the character concept can work, but will have to soften to the party sooner than later.

re: poison. It's also crazy expensive unless you have ways of crafting it, or getting multiple uses per dose.

I think we just need to take this as a bit of a lesson and move on from it. Play your character, but keep in mind that if the people around you don't like you, your lifespan as an adventurer is going to be a short one. Khel would step in front of a charging rhino for a friend, but he's not going to risk the lives of his party by wasting his saving someone who is not likable. Maybe you just need to "refine" the character concept a hair to make her a little less abrasive?

And as for the poison, no such thing as "free" poison. The components cost a lot, and Black Smear, which is created from a mushroom from the Darklands, is not free at all unless you are the one harvesting the ingredients, which are exceptionally rare. Craft: Alchemy will give you the skill to eventually be able to make such items, but you won't be cranking those out at level 1 with zero cost.

A skilled rogue will be a valuable asset to the group. I'm sure you can pull it off. You may just need to back a bit off of the sinister aspect a hair and try to be a tad more likable :)

Okay then ^^' I will crank up the likability like I said she is distraught now so it was worse than normal. And alright XD I learned my lesson about the poisons. I was using hero lab to create her and it just had no cost or weight next to those items so I just thought "Score!" But anyways I guess I won't even be able to use poisons now which is unfortunate since I planned a lot of the character around that and may have to ask dunebugg if there is a way I can make a rouge sniper effective without it. Because 1d8 of damage really isn't enough to be effective at all @.@ also I haven't ranked her disable device and instead went with craft alchemy because of poison so I don't know how effective she will be as a common party rouge.

I can make her nicer though ^^' . . . Sorry

I'm ranged and my attacks do only 1d6, so don't lose yourself too much over those details. Plus, there are PLENTY of ways to get your sneak attack dice with ranged attacks. You just have to be creative. You have party members to help with that.

Well we lost our cleric, so that wouldn't be a horrid place to start. But losing Caerwyn also means we lose a fighter-type. I'm fine with taking front line duties besides Louise, since one of our front line people was replaced by Lipp. I'd say our biggest weakness is still the lack of a purely arcane type.

As we stand now:

Melee types: Louise and Khelvor (eventually Lipp with dervish)
Ranged types: Khelvor and Jix

Not sure how Krojan plans on playing out the oracle.

My archetype comes with dervish for free, so Lipp is quite capable in melee right now. Other than the fact that I need a turn to get my dance up, my attacks will rival Lou and Khel easily :)

This build is melee plus support / utility casting, basically.

I agree though, lack of full arcane will likely make me pick different spells than I might otherwise.

I was actually wondering how your melee skills were so high without weapon finesse. Is that a freebie for your archtype? And the bonus to damage with a 6 STR? I've missed something somewhere on that build because my halfling bard is nothing like that! :)

It just sounds like you are not used to some of the conventions that more experienced tabletop rpg'ers take for granted. Don't worry about it, we'll teach you 8-). Paladins put more restrictions on other players, but the can make for good confict too. You just cant go too far. That is the nature of the game though, to cooperate for everyone to have fun.

It seems I forgot to list it as a bonus feat, but the archetype gets it in exchange for bardic knowledge.

So, that means DEX for both attack and damage. His dance also doesn't give anyone else a buff, but gives himself a +2, so when dancing he's at +7 to hit, and 1d4+7, 18-20/x2 as damage. If he hits, he also gets a free intimidate check at +7.

He's not a normal bard, that's for sure.

I hope this last post was more of an acceptable level of edgyness? >.>' I tried to dial it back quite a bit. Also she is still standing like right next to Krojun so if he decides to take the bauble back she will let him. I didn't just expect a yes on keeping the memento. ^^'

I'm still here. Work has been a B@tch with a capital B. One of our consultants quit on Monday with no notice and I've been pulling 12 hour days just to get up to speed on his projects. I'm trying to get a handle on everything before I go on vacation next week. Please bear with me over the next two weeks and all should calm down.

Thanks for finally let us know :) Started to worry you had completely disappeared. We can try and manage with low posting for the next couple weeks. I can GMNPC you around as needed if that's fine.

@Jix: you can do some minor rebuilding since you didn't realize about the poisons.

@All: between tomorrow suppertime and monday morning there will likely be 0 updates. This is a once-a-year deal as it's my city Pride weekend! I will either be partying or passed out for most of that time (or attempting to write a paper while massively hung over). I will leave the game in a place where you can RP the weekend away!

Alright I'll get some adjustments done this weekend ^^ you enjoy yourself! And get crunk I suppose XD

Just a heads up. I'm going to be on vacation from Sunday the 16th until Saturday the 22nd.
I'll have my laptop and phone with me and should be able to keep up with the game but I may not be able to post until late evening PST after my daughter goes to bed or in the early morning when everyone is still asleep.

It's a pride miracle! Two nights of drinking and no hangovers.

So I gotta ask - is this game dying? People losing interest? I know the first combat usually kills games off but I don't want that to happen. So today or tomorrow I would like everybody to re-commit to the minimum 1/day post, or we can start replacing people.

@Caerwyn, do what you can :) Have a fun vacation!

I'm still just as into posting as ever I just happened to have cut my leg wide open today so sorry I'm a little late on the post also just trying to figure how to get Jix to interact with everybody without making them hate her XD

Male Human Oracle of the Heavens/1 (HP: 11 of11)

I'm here. I was more waiting for things to move forward a bit, but I'll put a post up soon.

Same, I check multiple times per day. Problem is that my character is currently engaged in an action that will carry till the end of the current day and really isn't in a position to speak to others. So I'm at the point where I'm waiting for things to move to the next morning based on what everyone is doing. I could post "Khelvor continues to carve, etc. ad naseum" but it would probably be redundant :)

Male Halfling Bard 1 | AC 18 T 15 FF 14 | HP 10/10| F +2 R +6 W +2 | Init +4 | Perc +2

I also am checking in at least a couple times on weekdays, I try to not just post some filler if there's not an oppurtunity to actually do something.

I'd suggest someone in the front line who is likely to take a melee attack.

Lipp and Louise appear to be our front liners, and Lipp has a slight advantage on her in the AC department, so she'd (he'd) be the likely choice to benefit from it the most. I will be working melee for a good part of level 1, but my AC is a notch better than Lipps, so I'd take a pass in favor of one of them. You and Jix are less likely to see direct AC based attacks.

Now, this depend on how Caerwyn and you plan to do most of your fighting as well. But I think overall Louise is probably the best candidate.

Louise also takes a negative to AC when using Challenge, -3 AC vs non challenged targets, and -1 AC vs challenged target when using Sworn Defense, or -2/-0 if not actively trying to defend someone else, so that probably makes Louise an even better choice, of course Challenge is only once per day at this point.

Oh well f@!& me. Teaches me to post before my morning coffee. That should be a Cloak of Resistance +1, not protection.

Herpa derp derp.
