When the elegant but run-down Thorn Manor was bought by a tall, silent newcomer known as Lord Rostau, no one paid much notice. But now carriages come and go at odd hours of the night, and strange blue flashes of light are seen from the upper stories.

What is this
This is the recruitment thread for a PBP playtest of Thorn Manor, the round 4 entry of Clay Blakenship in the RPG Superstar 2013 contest.

If you want to play, please don't read the encounter entry until after the playtest is over.

How will this work
Time is a factor here, so I'll open up recruitment for 24 hours, then pick a group of four. The playtest is of a single encounter, so I expect fast-paced play.

All players are expected to post frequently, several times per day. If a player holds up the game for a significant length of time, I'll GMPC your action for the round.

At the end of the game, i would like for all participants to note their thoughts about the encounter, which I will then post in the entry's thread on the RPG Superstar forum.

How do I get to play

I will run this for a group of four 15-point buy level 3 PC's. I'll mix the group from applicants to get a well-rounded party.

If you wish to participate, please post below with the following:
- A brief description of a character you would like to play. You do not have to present a completed character, but please note race and class (including archetype if applicable).
- Your time zone and location.

I will make the final selection at 12:00 CET Thursday the 28th of February, and open up the game thread as soon as all players have checked in with a complete character alias.

Multi-classing allowed?

Why not?

I'm going to put together a Human Fighter Crossbowman. I assume we get WBL and there aren't any restrictions on how we spend it.

Do we get any traits?

Are there any races not allowed? (More for curiosity, I'm making a human. At least I'm pretty sure on that.)

- any level 3 character you can come up with

- standard WBL, no restrictions
- 2 traits
- let's limit allowed sources to the PRD and the superstar round 2 archetypes.

I think I'll throw my hat into the ring. I'll stat up an Elf lame oracle with 5 CON. Now, who wants to volunteer to push me around in my wheelchair?

If I don't get any takers on that, I'll do a negative-channeling Aasimar battle cleric of Gorum.

Stolen from the place of his birth when he was but an infant, he was raised in seclusion within a monestary of Torag and taught in the ways of the Forge-Father. He knows nothing of his own origins and (Falsely) believes that he was given his form to be an instrument of his god to strike down the evils of the world.

I'm still going with the crossbow idea, but the Weapon Master is more appropriate concerning the feats I chose. I'm also planning on recycling one of my old defunct avatars for such a short game, and the name is fixed then to a short list. Thanks for your consideration.

This is RainyDayNinja, posting with my cleric build. Since we're only playtesting an encounter, quick-and-dirty style, I didn't bother with any background. Stats in the profile.

OK, guys - time to choose.

With only five applicants and the proposed mix of classes, I see no problem in letting all five of you play. Further recruitment is now closed.

HOWEVER - the wise and fair judge Clark Peterson has pointed out to me that it would be much better for the contest if I playtest one of the other entries, since this one has so many things going against it that it is unlikely to advance.

SO, what this means is that I instead propose that we play the encounter titled Feer's Crossing, by Pedro Coelho. In this encounter, the PC's are an elite squad sent to secure one of the wardstones that hold back the demons of the Worldwound before it falls into enemy hands.

If everyone are ok with this change, update your PC's to level 9 (or make a fresh one that you feel fit the encounter better).

Once I get an ok from everyone, I'll post a game thread and we can get rolling.

If you wish to back out due to the change, just post here, and I'll recruit a replacement if needed.

That's fine with me. I can update my character at work today.

Can be ready tonight, if that's OK.

That's fine. Just as soon as possible. If we can get the game going sometime during the weekend, that's good enough for me.

I got this, Crossbowman will be updated to level 9.

I'll work on getting him built to level 9 ASAP.

Sounds good. With the level changed to 9th, I can't really play my character as the uninitiated individual I had first anticipated. I may have to alter my idea some, but I am still interested in playing and will adjust soon.

Updated.

Here's my halfling wizard. I just need to finish spell selection and equipment and he'll be ready to go.

Edit: Question for you; how do you want to do hit points? Roll? Average?

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Average hp

PFS style, Max first level, then d6 gets 4, d8 gets 5, d10 gets 6, etc..?

OK folks, 9th level upgrade taking a little longer than expected. But, should be done tomorrow evening in time to start this weekend!

Concept changed slightly, a little more versatile.

Elf
Rogue 6/Magus 3
Scout/Spire Defender

Scimitar in one hand, wand in the other... an Elven Commando.

Skills and thrills!

Got the crunch together, I'll pile on an alias when you are ready to go.

Considering we are going into the Worldwound, could I alter my character to a low templar? He'll be a little less noble than I originally intended, but should work fine.

Not a problem. I'll get the thread up later tonight.

All right, I have created a game thread and discussion thread. Please make your in-character introductions by posting with your game alias in the discussion thread and specifying what preparations you have made.

You should be able to access the threads from the tabs above. Let me know if there are any problems.

Wow, down to gear.
