Background:
More than a year has passed since Jawn awoke on that garbage heap. In truth, during the savage beating Gaedren was giving him, Jawn wished for unconsciousness just to end the pain.
Jawn grew up as an urchin in the Shingles district of Korvosa. Every day was a trial, and struggle for food and a safe place to sleep in neighborhoods full of predators. It should be no surprise that he eventually fell for the lure of steady meals and relative safety in the employ of Gaedren. Except in practice it turned out to be slavery rather than employment. One night Gaedren suddenly dragged Jawn away and beat him mercilessly. Jawn had no idea what slight he may have committed, but that didn’t stop the torturous beating.
When Jawn came to, his entire body felt broken and bruised. Unable to move, he laid waiting for his wounds to finally kill him. It was then that an angel appeared. Maybe it wasn’t truly an angel, but she seemed to beautiful and haloed with light that Jawn believed she was divine. She told him “It is not your time, little one.” She raised a small vial to his lips, and he tasted sweetness beyond anything he had experienced before. He fell asleep, and when he woke he was better. Not good, but well enough to limp away and find a place to hide. Over the coming weeks and months, he recovered and started to prosper. For the first time, he left the Shingles and explored Korvosa as a whole. With the skills he learned as an urchin, he prospered. He found a new life stealing what he needed and starting to enjoy life for the first time. Yet two things burning in his mind: who was that angel that saved him, and how could he get revenge for the near murder he endured?
Appearance:
Spending most of his youth malnourished, which is why he is so small, even for a halfling. His skin shows numerous blemishes and scars from old wounds that healed poorly. Several limbs and digits show small crooks from bones that were broken were badly set and knitted that way.
His garments are worn and piecemeal. He wears a scarf around his neck to pull up in case he needs to commit a little larceny. He wears two daggers at his belt, and a keen eye can pick out the hilts of quite a few more tucked here and there. He carries an old, oiled leather bag over one shoulder with his meager belongings in it.
While he is truly enjoying life since getting away from Gaedren, he is still prone to flashes of anger and bouts of melancholy when something makes his flashback to his old life.
