Iron in the Snow

Game Master waynemarkstubbs

The people of this icy world have not had iron since the time of the Worldbreaking. Now, the orcs of the north swarm forth armed with the grey metal. Will they stain the snow red with blood?

Human Oracle 2

Sorry I've been AWOL everybody; this has been a busy week.

Now I'll be in DC all day away from a computer, possible overnight. Please NPC Asheru as necessary.

Unwell. Update tomorrow guys.

So I caught it from you! ;P

Computer virus! Nooooo!

Right, my immune system has done what I pay it for, and I have emerged from my duvet.

So I can move things on, are you doing any more at the tower, or are you moving on towards the Mudpits?

Bonewright will gather from the spiders, stand a watch (nervously), rest, restore spells (yay new level!) and be ready to move either way.

I don't want to waste your planning - I'm happy to go down. The Orcs were setting an ambush here for us, but there could well have been another reason to come here, right?

As for the mudpits - we now have incredibly valuable information. Do we need to share it? Should we drop past the elves and get some more runners sent? Should I be asking this IC?

Happy for you all to discuss it OOC in this thread. I can then summarize it as a "what the characters discussed around the campfire" post.

In the meantime I'll post some more information from the Stories.

M Dwarf Storm Druid / 2

Before doing anything, Wheatbeard would like to rest.

He would speak to exploring this catacomb further.

AC 21, T 13, FF 17 / Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +1 (All +1 vs arcane) / Init +5 / Perception +1

I also need to rest still.

Male Human Ranger2

I say we rest and then discuss everything. I also vote for a dungeon exploration.

OK.

Can you all check your character sheets, and make sure they are up to date for level 2. Some of them still say level 1, and I need to be sure that you've updated hp, skill ranks etc. Thanks

Sure, I was just waiting until we rested.

Male Human Ranger2

I just forgot to change one thing...

AC 21, T 13, FF 17 / Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +1 (All +1 vs arcane) / Init +5 / Perception +1

I should be good.

M Dwarf Storm Druid / 2

Set!

Done!

OK guys, I really need people to pick it up and push things forward if this game is going to continue. As much as I enjoy your internal monologues, I need you to post actions to which I and the other players can respond. Keep the internal monologues too, but I need to know what your characters are doing.

M Dwarf Storm Druid / 2

I generally wait for GM response before posting further actions, but I will chain them now.

As an example, Wheatbeard is descending into the pit once again. More spiders may await them, and he may not find a passage beyond the tomb. I left that for you to declare, but I suppose I could assume the passageways extend farther.

Also, while we're on the topic of people picking it up, I'm assuming Asheru is gone as we haven't heard from him in 2+ weeks.

I'm very happy to adapt my style to what people want to see. Usually I will set a scene, and then let the players' interactions drive things until I need to step in again. I want the players to be driving the story. But as I say I'll adapt if that's what is wanted.

Re: Asheru - I've messaged the player asking him/her to update me on their online availability and ability to post.

Bonewright's intention is to continue on through the cave of the dead. He's interested in seeing the amulet, but can do it later if necessary.

AC 21, T 13, FF 17 / Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +1 (All +1 vs arcane) / Init +5 / Perception +1

Tupilek is still down a lot of HP, and wants to go kill Bampfwick and stick to the mission. He was all rearing to go to follow that orc back to it's fellows so we could gather some intel and complete our mission, but then Moklik murdered him. Now we seem to have shifted main focus to this crypt thing just because it's here. What happened to the urgent intel gathering mission to the mudpits people?

Let's assume that Asheru gives you a CLW in the morning -

1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7hp regained.

Murder is such an ugly word. I prefer killed without warning.

Male Human Ranger2

We are starting to become more like true Murder-Hobos...

I'm a stabbing hobo!

Hmmm - Bonewright would like to go into the cavern here because these people successfully fought off orcs and may have left some clues AND because it should only take an hour or so to have a look around.

I've had no communication, including replies to a PM, with Asheru's player in over a week.

I'm reluctantly going to ask them to withdraw from the game.

What I propose to do, but I'd welcome your imput on this, is to ask another player to take over the character until the group gets back to 'base camp', whenever that is. At that point the player can decide to continue with the character or to introduce their own. What do you think?

Male Human Ranger2

Guess you could NPC him or even have him be injured and figure out a way for us to get him back and replaced by another.

Though I would be willing to attempt to build an Oracle to replace him...

Sadly it has been a while since I have built an Oracle.

I'll have a think about whether I want to NPC him, or bring another player in at this point.

It's a shame - I had designed the current encounter for Asheru, in a sort of "meet the ancestors" way.

M Dwarf Storm Druid / 2

At least by cutting our losses, we won't have the same problem with him again.

Regarding your suggestion of what to do about the character, I think incorporating some fresh meat as you mentioned above is a good path.

Male Human Ranger2

I was offering alternatives. Though I agree fresh blood would be handy.

M Human Oracle/2

Greetings! Asheru should be back to life (pun unfortunately intended). Tupilek, do you still need a CLW?

AC 21, T 13, FF 17 / Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +1 (All +1 vs arcane) / Init +5 / Perception +1

I think the GM gave it to me already. Thanks though.

M Human Oracle/2

Here's the updated Loot list: LOOT

Asheru could use the masterwork hide armor, rather than having it packed around unused.

Also, the three Peryton bracers seem unclaimed. It seems Caedmon should have one as "the protector" ;) And I know Wheatbeard refuses to wear one, because he refuses to serve the elf. But Moklik and Tupilek could probably both make good use of them at the moment, Guidance is a handy spell. If they don't want it and it passes to Bonewright or Asheru, I imagine we'd be happy to strap 'em on.

M Human Oracle/2

Also, as I'm going through the character sheet, I've noticed a couple discrepancies:

1) Lowered Asheru's HP from 19 to 18. Oracles receive 1d8: Full base (8) plus con bonus (+1) plus toughness (+3) Half plus one @ lvl 2 (+5) plus con bonus (+1) edit: +1 for favored class fixed

2) Raised spells per day. 4 lvl 1 spells is the base an oracle may cast at lvl 2, +1 for charisma bonus spells.

3) At lvl 2 Asheru requested permission to replace Divine Favor with Bless, which was granted. It is now reflected on the sheet.

Male Human Ranger2

I am currently trying to catch-up.

AC 21, T 13, FF 17 / Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +1 (All +1 vs arcane) / Init +5 / Perception +1

So can I wear the bronze breastplate?

Male Human Ranger2

Either you or Moklik and I think it fits you better.

I might take the Bow...

I don't want the breastplate. Moklik is built for speed and mobility. I've been toying with taking a level of Barbarian for him...

Male Human Ranger2

Maybe Monk? Is there a good Monk Archetype for a Savage Monk?

Hmm, good idea. I'll look into it!

AC 21, T 13, FF 17 / Fort +5, Ref +3, Will +1 (All +1 vs arcane) / Init +5 / Perception +1

Cool, updating my sheet.

Actually, after pondering it, I think I'll go ranger for 3rd level, then aim for Druid for a few levels. Moklik definitely wants to be able to shapeshift into a cat!

M Dwarf Storm Druid / 2

Wheatbeard is a bit distrustful of using the dead's instrments; he sees it as a sign of bringing dishonor to them were he to not use them well, and he's not exactly the warrior type.

He is interested in the craftsmanship on the breastplate, but he would not wear it. The spear would be most useful to him, though as I said above, he doesn't desire it.

M Human Oracle/2

@Moklik - Druid sounds like a fun option. There's some shaman options that give you aspects of certain animals too. Also, if you haven't totally dismissed barbarian yet, look into the Animal Fury rage power. It only takes a dip of 2 levels into barbarian to get it, which will give you the rage ability and barb. HP as well. The Animal Fury power could be pretty handy since it adds an additional attack (albeit at a penalty if grouped with other attacks, but doesn't hinder those other attacks at all).

It's also a golden ability if you pursue grapples, since it a)gives you a bonus to grapple manuevers; as well as b)provides continual additional attacks through the grapples. There's a thread that explains how, as a grapple-minded barbarian with animal fury, you can get 6 attacks in a round, almost all of which at full BAB.

On another note, people still need to grab those last 2 Peryton Bracers.

Asheru also has 'Guidance' as an orison spell. It's not a free action, but during skill checks with preperation you're welcome to request it, or even assume it. He'd be pretty liberal in trying to help.

Remind me what the Peryton Bracers do, please.

M Human Oracle/2

The can cast Guidance as a free action 3x/day. Guidance is a simple spell that provides a +1 competance roll on a single attack roll, saving throw, or skill check of your choice.

Also, I'm confused on the Bonewood great clubs referenced here. I love the lore, but am curious if the greatclub Asheru has is bonewood, which would be better than actual bone I believe.

Tupilek took a bone greatclub as flavour (carved from a mammoth tusk I think) as did Asheru. When it was pointed out that bone weapons are -2 damage, they wanted to swap to wooden ones, which don't have a damage penalty, but keep them 'looking' like bone, for the coolness factor. Hence, the bonewood tree...
