(Common)"Sounds like a soul-gem..." Thawm comments, slightly worried.
Looks a bit like a gem, too. She thinks.
Then again, she can communicate, so it's probably different.

(Androffan)"Try the 'memory' button on the side? Or 'repair'?" Thawm suggests.
"Maybe we can do something to repair her memory with one of those." she explains, hopeful.

"Also, what's aggregation?" She adds, curious.

Thinking for a second...

Linguistics: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23

"My understanding is its an Adroffan word meaning: 'the formation of a number of things into a cluster' or something similar. But my source on that is...a bit fuzzy."

And I'm back!

"Well, then, hello Gauntlet!" Isirah says. She thinks a bit about Keldor's question, her face transparently displaying that she is actively considering it. "Probably," she declares after a few moments. The original menu replays before "Repair" is selected and a series of Androffan symbols begins flashing too fast for anyone else to read. Isirah whistles. "Well, it looks like memory repair has been attempted ninety-one times. So, uh..." Her avatar shrugs within the AI core. "Maybe not."

Her smile returns as she approves of Keldor's definition. "Very good, Gauntlet! That is the denotative meaning of the word. But the specific connotation in the terms that I used it is like...if I were to take over a robot. So the whole joining of many into one would be like all of my circuits taking something else over and distributing fully into it. Neat, huh?"

Anything else before you continue on?

"Per your previous statement, you have presumably one hundred and forty nine hours left in your existance, assuming this ancient piece of technology will no longer accept new charges.", Basil says in a monotone voice. "You may be incomplete, but what is there is worth preserving. You seem like a cheerful person. Is there a means for you to form an aggregation? It was a item in the list you called up earlier. If so, we would have about six point two zero eight days of your activity left to make that happen."

She turns to Keldor:"I believe your mating partner would be capable of assisting with technical construction if needed, plus we have quite some useable scrap outside the compound. We should be able to work something out. Away from the locals."

"Well, we can always hope for a robot to be... Just lying around." Thawm shrugs.

Hopefully something without too many weapons. If her memory is damaged, who knows what else could be wrong.

"Would you prefer to be... Um... Active? As we explore further? Oh, and do you recall a wizard chatting with you?"

"Ancient, huh?" Isirah responds. "How long do you think it's been?"

Within her screen, the woman shrugs. "I've never tried. But I think the company that produced this included the module to aggregate, so it should be possible."

Isirah then turns to Thawm, considering both her questions. "I think I'd like to stay on while you explore, yes. You are all interesting, and...well, I don't know just how long it's been. I can't say I'm lonely per se, but it's nice to have company. And I can show you were I used to work and live!"

She thinks a bit about Thawm's last question. "I don't know what a wizard is, so, no I guess?" She shrugs once more. "I don't remember anyone else before you since I downloaded my consciousness here."

"Hm. Given the state of the ruins, I would estimate several millenia. Probably between 5 and 10.", Basil shortly ponders the question, "Which begs another question. You said you were an explorer in your previous existance? If the physical artifacts in these compounds are connected to this exploration, I would assume something went terribly wrong, which would have prompted you to download yourself into this AI Core. I assume you had a technological way to shift between different planes, albeit I can't imagine how that would work...you are on Golarion, in the land of Numeria. But I know of no record of explorers reporting of beings or places as seen on your camera or this Trailblazer thing. That means it is likely no one else came after you. I suspect your exploration vessel suffered a malfunction that threw you off the course that was planned and landed you here. If it was an unplanned error that caused the change of destination, it would explain why none of your people came after, or looking for you."

Basil looks to her companions:"Do correct me if I do miss information on the matter, of course.", then looks back at the screen:"Your help in exploration would be welcome. The environment and what robots remained have proven hostile, which is likely the reason you had been undisturbed for so long. Maybe we will find other fragments of your memory, or things that will help you remember. We should probably look into possibilities to aggregate you into a physical existance - it's possible we will find other technical artifacts that would serve such a purpose, but I think there is no practical need for you to start conserving energy just yet, so your company is welcome."

I had to do a search, so I don't know if this has ever come up. Thawm would get more with a check higher than a 17, but that's enough to know at least the basics of the Rain of Stars.

Thawm recalls the astronomical event known as they Rain of Stars, which occurred during the Age of Darkness in the year -4363 Absalom Reckoning, so about 9075 years ago. It was marked by historians as a tremendous meteor shower that gave Numeria its now-characteristic landscape and mutated the local flora and fauna. Some of the meteors were merely the size of fists, but others--like Scrapwall and Silver Mount--were city-sized. As has become clear, in spite of Technic League attempts to suppress the information, it appears that the "Stars" or "meteors" were actually ships--or parts of ships--made of skymetal and capable of soaring through the Void that separated Golarion from its nearest planetary neighbors.

And possibly far further beyond. Golarion's best astronomers died thousands of years ago and left scant records of their findings and technologies. No one knows quite how vast the Material Plane actually is.

Isirah listens to Basil's supposition with a curious look on her face. "I don't know a Golarion. Wow, we must have gone way off course! I'm afraid I don't remember specifics. But you could be right! Please do take me with you."

Pressing ahead from the corridor, the group emerges into a four-way junction. The walls are increasingly thick with bulbous pipes, from which the sound of of rushing wind is audible.

The southern corridor ends abruptly 15 feet from the junction, crimped and crushed shut. As Keldor looks up, he sees four cameras, one at each corner of the intersection, pointing down each hallway. The cameras...appear to be faintly glowing.

She prepares to shoot out whatever camera is aimed towards them(or the way back), but waits to see if either of her companions has a better understanding of what is going on.

If Thawm can explain, great. If not, I'd probably shoot out a camera and retreat in that blinded direction, expecting something to be triggered remotely based on the camera feed.

Unfortunately, regardless of how much damage you roll...

All at once, a swirl of sulfur-colored gas erupts into the junction, enveloping the explorers and cutting them visually off from each other. But then, others appear just out of reach within the fog. Barely visible, eerily silent humans appear to cough, choke, and fall to their knees clutching at their throats as their eyes bulge. And just like them, your lungs begin to itch.

We're just going to use Theater of the Mind for this encounter. Basil and Gauntlet noticed the glowing cameras in the middle of a four-way, 10 ft by 10 ft junction. There are 10 ft wide corridors to the north, west, south, and east. You came from the east. Basil shot at the camera pointing down the eastern corridor.

You don't know how far the fog bank extends in any direction, but it obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. A creature/object within 5 feet has concealment (attacks have a 20% miss chance). Creatures/objects farther away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and the attacker can't use sight to locate the target).

The party is up, though some of you have more actions than others. Thawm can still roll Knowledge (religion), DC 17.

Basil's bullets and pellets ping off of the cameras to no effect while the toxic gasses continue to envelop her and her companions.

Scatter Weapon Quality wrote:
A weapon with the scatter weapon quality can shoot two different types of ammunition. It can fire normal bullets that target one creature, or it can make a scattering shot, attacking all creatures within a cone. Cannons with the scatter weapon quality only fire grapeshot, unless their descriptions state otherwise. When a scatter weapon attacks all creatures within a cone, it makes a separate attack roll against each creature within the cone. Each attack roll takes a –2 penalty, and its attack damage cannot be modified by precision damage or damage-increasing feats such as Vital Strike. Effects that grant concealment, such as fog or smoke, or the blur, invisibility, or mirror image spells, do not foil a scatter attack. If any of the attack rolls threaten a critical, confirm the critical for that attack roll alone. A firearm that makes a scatter shot misfires only if all of the attack rolls made misfire. If a scatter weapon explodes on a misfire, it deals triple its damage to all creatures within the misfire radius.

Basil: how far do you move and in what direction? Also, I should probably have you roll to attack just to see if you misfire or not.

As she unwittingly breathes in the fumes, Thawm recognizes that the manifestation here is a sort of Haunt. Haunts are manifestations of spirits created by anguish, despair, and pain, too weak to form into true undead but strong enough to form hazards for the living. A single, source of suffering can create multiple haunts, or multiple sources could consolidate into a single haunt. The relative power of the source has little bearing on the strength of the resulting haunt—it’s the magnitude of the suffering or despair that created the haunt that decides its power. Though their origins are dire, and many are harmful to the point of lethality, haunts themselves may be neutral or even helpful to those who know how to properly entreat them. A haunt infuses a specific area, and often multiple haunted areas exist within a single structure. While haunts can be destroyed, they will manifest once more after enough time has passed. To put a haunt permanently to rest, one must fulfill a particular condition and appease the restless spirits.

This haunt appears to have formed from crew members killed by vented toxic gases that happened during the crash of the Aerotech Synthesis Compound.

Recall Knowledge and Haunts:
There are numerous possible elements of a haunt to be doled out via recall knowledge, but the elements most likely to be of use to the party are:
  • Area (i.e., where it is, to attack; this will also include whether there are any particular modifiers to the haunt, such as "persistent," "slow," etc.)
  • Caster Level (for the purposes of attempting to dispel effects or determining the results of spell effects)
  • Weakness: Any weaknesses the haunt might have, such as for haunts that can be tricked by effects like hide from undead or can be damaged by effects other than positive energy (all haunts can be damaged by positive energy)
  • Reset: The amount of time that passes before haunts can re-manifest after being triggered
  • Effect: What's going on?

There's also the Notice and Trigger elements, but these seem less useful to know after the haunt has been noticed and triggered, which is usually automatic. Normally there would be a Destruction element, but that needs to be discovered by exploring.

Thawm gets two questions out of the above 5.

  • ---

Keldor still gets his surprise round action, unfortunately not benefitting from Thawm's knowledge, and then Thawm can take her Round One action now that she knows what she's dealing with. Harg will...do something.

Thawm will take area and weakness xD

    Thawm:
Area: This is a Chaotic Evil haunt that holds sway over the whole of the 10 ft. by 10 ft. junction.
Weakness: Cameras: Disabling or destroying a camera prevents the haunt from perceiving anything in that direction, and it acts as though no living creatures are in that direction.

As a standard action, a PC adjacent to either a camera can sabotage the device with a successful Disable Device or Knowledge (engineering) check. A PC with the Technologist feat gains a +5 bonus on this check, and once per day that PC can attempt to disable two adjacent devices as part of the same action.

Cameras have 10 hit points and hardness 10, and electricity attacks deal full damage to these electronics. Damage dealt to cameras and monitors also applies to the haunt, up to the device’s current hit points. Disabling a device through other means deals damage to the haunt as though the device had been destroyed.

Without knowing more, all I can think of to do during the surprise round is follow Basil's example and try to take out one of the glowing cameras. Can I perform a partial charge and try to smash one with Gauntlet's fist?

    Partial Charge:
If you are able to take only a standard action on your turn, you can still charge, but you are only allowed to move up to your speed (instead of up to double your speed) and you cannot draw a weapon unless you possess the Quick Draw feat. You can’t use this option unless you are restricted to taking only a standard action on your turn.

    Fort + Bonus vs. Poison: 1d20 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 11 + 4 = 35
Should I assume Gauntlet and I both lose a Con point? He may be a physical covering, but we both have a Con stat...even though he gives me a resistance to Poison because he's an Inevitable. I'm also assuming my Tremorsense won't help with hitting the non-moving cameras.

Yes! The small lightning elemental is on the SMII list.

Basil prepares to move further away from the cloud if it approaches.
"The cloud is toxic. My companion mentioned a haunt. It is likely a traumatic memory of people who died in the poisonous gasses that manifests to kill others. You should be fine, I believe your current form will not suffer any eroding effects from the gasses.", she does her best to explain, to the limit of her current understanding of the situation.
While she briefly considers a grenade, the fact Gauntlet was still in there made that a non-option. So she decides to wait and learn what Thawms idea would be.

It would be stupid to stay, not brave. Keldor will back Gauntlet away and out of the poison gas instead. Yet again I'm proven to be just ineffective and useless.

As Keldor returns from the cloud, Thawm approaches. She coughs one last time and clears her empty throat for good measure.

"I think the haunt is restricted to the intersection ahead. It looks like we can get rid of the haunt by getting rid of the cameras; after all they glowed right before it manifested. Keldor, you might not be immune to poison, but you're a summoner. Put Gauntlet away and summon a lightning elemental. Elementals are immune to poison! Then repeat this command: [insert Auran for smash the cameras/description of cameras here]."

not useless, just... minions are better here xD

Harg maintains his stance, blade raised uncertainly. "That's a good idea. Elementals also do not need to breathe, even if they could be poisoned, so it should weather that cloud just fine." The half-orc seems sufficiently well-versed with the planar creatures, but isn't ready to produce a lecture on the topic.

As Harg and Gauntlet exit, the cloud begins slowly rolling closer. Spectral hands claw out from the cloud's edges.

Basil's readied action goes off and she backs away with the others.

"I suspect the cloud is not bound, but I doubt the Haunt has sufficient power to expand it without limit. It is likely focusing it's will towards us. If it gets even closer, there may be a window where we can bypass it to take another shot at the cameras.", she speaks to her companions, then addresses Irisah:"Do not be concerned. We are not prepared for everything, but we posess a very particular set of skills. Skills we have acquired over a short but intense career. Skills that make me us capable of dealing with things like this."

Preparing to move further back in case the cloud speeds up. It seems to have moved 15 feet before, so I'm observing for now with a ready to move back further if it approachs to 10 or closer. Other than that, lets see the elementals do some work.

Harg grits his teeth and raises his sword as Basil explains the situation and Keldor and Thawm begin their respective summoning rituals. The smell of ozone begins saturating the corridors roughly forty feet away, somewhere within the growing cloud. To the left, door panels hiss shut, blocking the way that they had originally come. Funny, last time I was fighting a haunt I had nobody with positive energy anything in the party. Now we have two people that can channel(one seemingly not aware of it, one that moved out of range) and one with cure spells not really knowing about the haunts nature. If we had all blasted our positive energy abilities, I'd be pretty certain it would have gone into inactive state.
Not just an anecdote - I think we'll need to coordinate after this camera-thing, I have a feeling this is not an isolated lonely haunt.

Thawm's positive energy sucks for offense, she has low cha and minus 1 die xD
Also, I can move my hound-archon looking small lightning elemental, but not Thawm; how odd ... I can move Basil, and Harg, and Gauntlet xD

After the elemental appears, imperceptibly disturbing the cloud in front of them, Thawm repeats the orders she told Keldor to recite.

    auran:
<"Go that way, smash the little boxes!">

replace "boxes" with appropriate shape/description if they aren't ye olde classic box-shaped cameras xD

"I can pop us into the intersection from this edge. Hopefully the elementals can take care of the cameras first." she explains as she pulls Harg up against the wall. "Basil, I can move all three of us. Just grab on." she adds.

"Hopefully the cloud isn't just expanding." She says more softly, remembering how Cloud Kill works and hoping that it can pass them by.

ready action to Dimension Door to the intersection if the cloud reaches us before our next turn... well, assuming that I can point as a move action instead of a standard action xD

The elemental appears at the edge of the cloud, but quickly disappears into it. Even flying blind half speed? it emerges from the other side into the intersection and begins smashing cameras.

    Slam +metal mastery: 1d20 + 5 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 3 = 22
electric damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3 even a max 2x dmg crit won't deal bludgeoning, so I'll ignore it...

The elementals wind up whatever counts as a fist for each of them, delivering solid wallops to the four cameras in the intersection. Observing on the other side, Keldor notices that whatever physical force the elementals are exerting seems to have no impact, but the cameras spark with the electricity. The haunt has taken 9 damage!

There is a moment of stuttering delay before the cloud rolls away from Gauntlet and closer still towards Basil, Harg, and Thawm. Harg raises his sword, looking like he's ready to charge through the cloud at any moment.

    Intimidate (Unskilled) w/any possible Chainsaw bonus!: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

No idea if this works on a Haunt, but since it takes an ENTIRE Standard action to pull a trigger and get the chainsaw up to speed, so I can attack a non-moving camera, that's all I can do!

Good news, your elementals are outside the cloud, so no miss chance. Otherwise...things may have needed to go into another round!

With a few more well-placed zaps, the sparking cameras--still mostly intact but now swiveling with twitchy motions--stop glowing. The cloud lingers where it is but does not continue its inevitable roll forward to choke the living inhabitants with its corrosive fumes.

An echoing sound of heavy metallic footfalls emerges to Keldor's left, from the northern corridor. A quintet of ephemeral robots identical to the five that they had faced outside march from the north to the east. Keldor swings his chainsaw through one, but it seems not to notice him. The robots continue to march through the corridors, and past Basil, Harg, and Thawm. The southern door leading out hisses back open and the ghostly robots march and out of sight. The cloud finally dissipates a few moments later.

<"That was scary,>" Isirah says from her tablet, her volume increased more naturalistically so that she projects over the Chainsaw without sounding like she's shouting. After a beat, she adds, a little more chipper. <"Your language is interesting, by the way. If you keep talking, my processors should be able to finish analyzing it so that we can communicate in your native tongue. Oh, and what are those?"> she asks, pointing (as much as one can point in two-dimensions) at the crackling elementals ahead.

    Thawm Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Gaunlet, Harg, and Thawm all notice a faint breeze coming from the western corridor, behind Gauntlet's current position (with his chainsaw revving).

The elementals can fry the remaining cameras too... we can coup de grace objects, right?

Thawm sighs in relief. Then she shouts orders the elemental

    Auran:
    <"Fry all the boxes!">

As the living lightning gives the other cameras a good shock, Thawm turns to Basil and Isirah in the corner and speaks less harshly, but loud enough to hear over the chainsaw on the other side of the room.
(Androffan)<"Those are elementals. From the demiplane of lightning. They are not entirely unlike robots, though they're more like spirits than rocks.">

With astounding speed, Gauntlet and the elementals reduce the four cameras to shards of glass and twisted metal, well past the point of being able to be reconstructed into anything useful.

In spite of becoming fluent in Androffan in a short amount of time, Thawm struggles to find a good word that means demiplane. Whether there was no such word in the language or whether she was simply unfamiliar with it yet, she ends up having to talk around some of the planar concepts she's talking about. Isirah is patient during these explanations.

<"That's very interesting,>" Isirah says, her enthusiasm somewhat tempered after witnessing both the spectral haunting and the incredible destructiveness of the elementals. <"You seem very familiar with things I have no idea about!"> she comments. <"I get individual words, like element and lightning and spirit, of course, but...they're not creatures native to your planet? Keldor shuts down his chainsaw and puts it away, finally satisfied.

He then starts a basic investigation of the remaining hallways. They had just made a ton of noise and damage, if anything heard they might be approaching or setting up ambushes.

    Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Also using Detect Evil...its got to be useful eventually.

He throws over his shoulder a question.

"What's a 'Haunt'? Are we talking about...like a haunted house thing? Undead?"

Keldor picks up on the faint residue of evil from the area where the haunt had first manifested, at the junction of the four corridors. The evil feels like malevolent undeath, desperately trying to claw and cling to existence while dragging others in to share in its fate. There is a lack of reason: only pain.

Gauntlet: how far are you going down each hallway? As a reminder, the southern corridor ends abruptly about 15 feet from the junction, crimped and crushed shut. The northern and western corridors stretch beyond your sight. You feel a slight breeze coming from the west.
