Hollows Last Hope

Game Master Pompey

First time GMing, so be nice. I want to start off with a really basic game for less experienced players. Details are in campaign info.

Hi. If you are playing in my Hollow's Last Hope Campaign you can use this thread for out of character discussion, ie: to tell me what I'm doing wrong. If you are playing in the campaign please take some time to introduce your character.

We'll begin when everyone is ready.

I'll be Advisor-Gm and a fellow player for this game.

If you need a hand on something just ask.

--------------------------------------------

Now there is a standard for PBP on these board in terms of text format.

regular text is for actions/descriptions names

"Bold text is for speech"

Italics are thoughts

Bold Italics are speech thoughts, i.e telepathy

OOC tag is for Out Of Character text in game play posts.

Spoiler text:

Spoilers get used in various ways, generally to hide information from a group or give one or more individual information the rest don't know.
Be sure to use the assign operation this tag allows to keep posts clean or character data clean.

the Dice tag also has a assign operation, use it to label the die roll to avoid confusion of what roll did what when rolling multiple of the same die, or action.
Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Everyone should have there character in an alias, if you don't know how to make an alias just ask, and I'll guide you through it.

still a few minor tweaks to make. But am here.

Welcome Brom

Male Dwarf Ranger/1

I think I have everything updated and ready to go.

Welcome Rathger.

Male Dragonblooded Druid 2/Aristocrat 1 +10 Perception

Ready to roll

Welcome Ulmarr

Welcome.

Now, All we need is sponge to post here and have his alias ready..

Male Elf Paladin/1

I'm ready.

Okay then we'll get started. Game-play thread is up.

The map is good and it names places, but the names don't cover what they are;

Goose’n’Gander: The local general store
Jak’a’Napes: A ramshackle inn
The Sitting Duck: Local Tavern
Hollow Tribunal: Magistrate's Office
Roots and Remedies: local apothocary

Falcon's Hollow Map

Falcon's Hollow Area

I'll be using Tina to get some gameplay going.

Now a GMing tip on NPCs

All major NPCs have stat blocks but also other types on information, you can use that to build the NPC's personality if one is not mentioned. You use this personality as the basis for the NPC's Actions and Reactions to events made by; PC, NPC, or other.

Now other NPCs which have no or very little defining them should be built up to a good level, this may include assigning a race and class. But they should have a; description, personality, and some backstory.
And again you use this personality as the basis for the NPC's actions and Reactions to events made by; PC, NPC, or other.
Now while you are free to assign what you want to an NPC with no data, it is best to keep the character from being too off the wall as it'll break immersion and be very jarring to the game.

It is these Actions and Reactions to events made by; PC, NPC, or other by the NPC that make them come alive, and show the uniqueness of each NPC.

General NPCs that should be have at least a description and a personality are; Barkeep(s), Barmaid(s), Craftsmen, InnKeep(s), store owner/worker(s), etc. Any NPC where you know the NPC will be interacting with a PC.

Other GM trick for PBP only

If you want a nice immersion trick for PBP, that can be reuse game after game for GMing, make generic aliases (I've made 8) and All of them start with the NPC_GENDER_ROLE name format, click one and read the posts to see how they were used.
It is a great tool for games with many NPCs as a GM.

GM PBP tip,

Don't use edits to add another response if a player has posted after you, a new post is recommended for folks to notice the new response.
So Get everything into one post or break it up into a few posts.

If you edit it is to fix typos or clear up a description of something.

This is where the NPC_generic Aliases come in.

A campaign that used the NPC aliases to help give an idea of how they worked.
I had some nice personality notes to work with to bring them to life and in character.

GM Magnus your starting to get a personality into the towns folk, but watch the racism level. As that is one thing that requires warning in the recruitment thread so folks know what they are in for if they choose that race. If it was a little, like one shop keep that is manageable and fine, but if a number of critical and or Secondary NPCs are all racist against a PC's race you crossed a line if there is no warning.

In this case you did not give the racism warning, so you have to now lower the racism level of the town, (and you'll need to recon one of the food places, as they can't both be racist without the warning)
as sponge is new and this unannouced level of racism towards his character can be REALLY off putting for new players.

Also Using Offical PF materials, Falcon's Hollow does have elves.
(94% human, 3% halfling, 1% half-elf, 1% elf, 1%other races)

I've opened a chance for a recon from one of the food places.
The racism card with NPCs that PCs interact with are never a flat out deny, generally a higher cost.
So you can have the Jak’a’Napes's be the elf haters, but the Sitting Duck is more open to it's clients.

No need to delete and re-post if the alias is wrong, just click edit, and change the alias and then click submit.

GM wrote:
Sorry for not warning you guys, I just wanted to give the players more motivation for taking the quest. I brought Ilbryn back to the sitting duck.

Racism is not a good motivation for quest taking; it's used more for; 1 hating the NPC, 2:leaving an area, 3: adding bitterness to A character, 4; to make a villian more vile.

On point number 3; you should use this scale as a reference for NPCs where PCs pay for services or goods table below (it is a rough scale);

Racism and Merchants:

Racism: Buy, Sell(50% buy value)
Neutral: 1.0x, 1/1.0x
Racist: 1.5x, 1/1.5x
Very Racist: 2.0X, 1/2.0X
Extremely Racist: 3.0x, 1/3.0x

Ok, noted. Thank you for your assistance, won't happen again.

Using racism in a game requires A LOT of GM experience to handle it correctly, and should never be used with new players, as it does require experienced players as well.

I tend to avoid using it, though I do use it for enemy NPC/groups once in a blue moon to give more reason to hate them, but even then I have to be careful of how I handle it.

Ilbryn how tall are you?

If folks want some character perspective and scaling, I'll make a height reference image so you can see how tall your character is.

Male Elf Paladin/1

6'2

hum, Brom has not posted in game yet....

apologies, Finals week is almost over, and this didn't show up in my campaigns.

It only shows up in campaigns after you post in the gameplay, discussion and recruitment don't trigger the adding of the campaign to the campaign list.

The Christmas holidays tend to slow things down, it is best to keep posting or the game will die, this means the GM should post at least once every 2 days at a minimum to try and keep the game going.

Sorry for the delay :).

No problem, it is the holidays,
if you did not show by Saturday, I was going to take over for a bit to keep it going.

Notice:
The messageboard is broken for me at the moment,

if you have this issue post Here so the dev know how wide spread it is.
