Hell's Rebels, Rise of the Silver Ravens

Red Velvet Tiger

For a city that prides itself on its diversity, creative spirit, and artistry, the yoke of martial law is particularly onerous. With Barzillai Thrune’s inquisitors and dottari thugs growing increasingly aggressive in their enforcement of martial law—and his increasingly ridiculous proclamations—the undercurrent of revolution is building in the city. The Night of Ashes only delayed the inevitability of a full-scale rebellion, and the first real hint of Kintargo’s future.
The atmosphere in Kintargo is tense. Numerous minor protests against Thrune have popped up, only to be quickly dispersed by dottari, Hellknights of the Rack imported from the south to aid in crowd control, or the local militia known as the Chelish Citizens’ Group. It’s been a week since Thrune seized control of the city, an word on the street is that the largest protest yet will be gathering in Aria Park, just south of the Kintargo Opera House where Barzillai Thrune has made his new home.
For whatever reason, you have attended the protest to be staged in Aria Park.
Even with the cobblestones of Argent Avenue and the foliage of Aria Park still wet from the morning’s light rain, dozens of Kintargans have gathered along the facade of the opera house to protest the city’s new lord-mayor, Paracount Barzillai Thrune. The city’s new leader was appointed by Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II, in the wake of the previous lord-mayor’s sudden flight from the city— an event that still has local rumormongers whispering furiously. In a scant seven days, Paracount Thrune has instituted martial law, a curfew, and seven outlandish and polarizing proclamations. These actions and more have called many of Kintargo’s dissatisfied citizens here on this overcast morn. There’s been no sign yet of Barzillai Thrune himself, and the opera house’s doors remain tightly
closed—as they have since the man chose the landmark as his new home—but judging by the growing sound of the protesters, he surely can’t ignore the scene on the streets below much longer.
This is the placeholder post while I get the map prepared. You can RP while I tinker with it and get the thing usable. I am right assuming that people want a map to place their icons on and have a real tactical sense, yeah?

The massive frame of a gnoll clinks and clanks in on the scene, clad in heavy armor and cheliaxian banners. These symbols mark him as being the property of some of the local noblesse. Gnolls aren't an uncommon sight by now. With martial law in full operation, these patrolling slave-enforcers have become both a sign of House Thrune's power and one of their fearsome influence.
This one, though, is a little bit different...
"So this is where it's going to break out, huh?" Rett ponders to himself, as he purports to patroll the area.
A smirk traces itself on his silver-toothed maw behind his helmet, and a faint cackling laugh echoes out. "In Sheela's name and grandfather Dreamer's memory, this one'll show them what we do to tyrants!"
"Hm some of these folks are lookin' at me. I hope I don't scare too many protestors away..."
Disguise: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13 Looks like in his excitement, he forgot part of his banners. Any PC with a half-decent perception should be able to tell Rett's only posing as an enforcer... but then so should some of the enemies.

It was difficult to be in such a large group, and Blink had an intense dislike of crowds. Well, no, that wasn't really true. She had a dislike of crowds which would so inevitably draw the eye of House Thrune on them. Any sensible person would be at the very least cautious, and Blink had a tendency towards caution. Incautious thieves ended up dead or worse, and she had no wish to end up in the 'worse' category once again.
Still, the feeling on the street was...promising. People were tired of Thrune, the slave-trading bastards, and the crazy new lord they'd placed in charge of the city. Or possibly he was just trying to push a rebellion, so he could crush it. A broken rebellion was quite the mark of pride in court, Blink assumed.
Bare feet on the cobblestones, Blink simply watched. She wanted to know where this was going, whether a full rebellion of the city or the new Governor breaking the spirit she'd noticed. Blink prayed not, rubbing the mark of Sarenrae hidden beneath a bandage on the back of her hand as she murmured the prayer beneath her breath, but...the Gods helped those that helped themselves, and that included cities.

In one corner of the pavilion, a group of young activists chatter excitedly; one Strix, two Tengu, and two humans with brightly-dyed hair discuss just how cool it is that they're part of a real protest.
But these are naive young radicals, and they'll scatter at the first sign of trouble—because if they don't, Shiri will drag them, kicking and screaming, from the square. The crippled Strix watches with apprehension as he leans against a wall, whistling softly through the wooden beak he wears. The daylight is not his time; and with Thrune, he's learned, the guards no longer make distinctions between broad daylight and darkened alleys. With his floured skin, artful mask, and heavy cloak, Shiri is just another out-of-work street artist, or perhaps a monk of an impoverished order; only the clenched fist at his side and the crossbow in his worn pack might indicate otherwise.

His curiosity has got the better of Simon, and he had left his home-forest a few weeks ago, with Kintargo as his aim. Soon after his arrival he heard rumours about rebellion and a big protest just in front og the new-mayor's residence. Curious and interested Simon headed that way.
Today: As the mass of people are already gathered before the mansion, Simon is walking, joining the mass seemingly by random, and listening interested for news about the situation in Kintargo and its citizen.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
From now and then he plays some little melody on his bone-white flute, a melody talking of the freedom and beauty of the wilds.

Altough he seems to be relaxed, a good observer might notice that he is constantly checking his surrounding for any sign of danger, stroking the black cat - the size of a big dog - which is walking beside him.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Noticing the armored frame of the Gnoll, Simon carefully advances him, seemingl by chance, talking with bystanders left and right while he do so.
He thinks to himself: This one might mean trouble. He bears the signs of the Lord, but not the right way. What does that mean? Is he sent as a brutal overwatch, or does he trying to pretend to be an official while he is not? Ether way... he smells like he is eager to fight, those are always dangerous.

Never more than 10ft from Simon, walks a midnight-black cat, the like you most likely have never seen before. It is the size of a big dog, and clad in a black, tight fitting leather armor.
Many people turn around to take a second look on the uncommon animal, which looks quite dangerous, with its claws and long teeth. On one occasion a bystander had not yet noticed Simon and was about to run into him, when the black cat hissed loudly and the bystander froze in place.
As Simon starts to play his flue, the cat is by his side and begins to purr nearly immediately and robs her head at Simons side.
Emily is always on guard for any possible trouble targeting herself or Simon.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Rett remains mostly impassible as Simon approaches him.
That one looks like he might be ready to rebel with the others, even brought a beast along to cause some trouble. On the other hand, he might be a planted spy. I'd better keep an eye on him, someone like that might be good help... or major trouble.
Silver teeth ground against one another, and Rett's hands tightenend into fists in his gauntlets.
Things should be breaking any minute now...

Aleksara looked around, eyes wide with wonder: Tieflings everywhere, dog-man, cat-man, bird-men... was this a city or some strange demi-god's menagerie?
The black-cat animal following the cat-man, was a beautiful specimen of its type, but dangerous at its size. She hoped it did not panic once any sparks started to fly. She would hate to put such a creature down.
Her brow furrows suddenly as she realizes she had lost her friend from the ship among the crowd while she was ogling the strange locals.
Cursing under her breath, she quickly scans the crowd again for the young human sailor, using her staff as a light prod to push her way through the crowd.

Seeing that his approach was noticed, Simon takes a direct approach to the big, armored Gnoll, looking quite a few inches up into his face, before addressing him directly: "Hi there, big-one. My name is Simon Blue-Eye. I have not seen a Gnoll in a while ... And certainly not one in the service of a noble family!" He winks at the Gnoll after the last sentence, to show his disbelieve in that very fact.
One of Simon's hands is kept inside his battered green mantle, ready to draw on of his sharp blades of things go bad in moments. His posture is quite keen, ready to react to an unforeseen attack.
Better take no chance with him. I will see what he has to say and how he react. All Gnolls I previously met, should engage or retreat depending on how many friends they have around. But this one is alone, and also looks quite intelligent and a bit less ... ferocious.
Rett frowns. Hidden hands are never a good sign. That said...
If he's hiding it under that cloak, it can't be a very threatening weapon.
"Don't bring that up. The last thing I need is to be reminded." The gnoll grumbles.
"What do you want, catfolk?"

Blink watched in vague curiosity as the bulky Gnoll and Catfolk got into an exhange. It was odd to see either of those races here, although Gnolls weren't as uncommon as they had been since they were often slavers, but both together reminded her of home. Gnoll expletives echo through Rett's mind at Simon's insinuations. To have his alibi seen right through was not something he'd been expecting.

After the young woman stopped, Simon shakes his head in obvious disbelieve. "And then people go around and tell tales about how civilized the live in the big cities are. Any snake pit is a more pleasant place to be if all your word are true!" After another few word with the woman Simon trails on, a bitter taste in his mouth. "Stay sharp, Emily. This city is just another form of wilderness with at least as many dangers. Take a special watch on those people," he points on some of those misplaced people, "they make me feel uneasy. I think they could be spies of this gruel man on top of the city...".
"This is neither the place or time for me to say what I want." Rett shrugs with a faint growl of irritation. "Thrune is in control of the city, and I've got a job to do."
Dismissing any further talk, Rett clanks away to a secluded corner, where he attempts to fix his banners best he can. To his great irritation, he crosses the path of a fellow gnoll around the way, who seems to see through his costume. All the more reason to fix it up.

Blink continued to watch the chaos of the crowd, trying to size up what was about to happen. She had the feeling it would be interesting, but whether it was in a 'overthrow the house of Thrune' interesting or a 'half the city is sacraficed to devils' interesting wasn't certain. In fact, it was entirely possible that both would happen.

So you got a job to do? But what business do you have here? Guess its not selling finger-food, is it? Simon thinks as the bis Gnoll rumbles away. A quick pad on Emily's side and he set himself in movement. Using the crowd as he would use the Underwood for cover, he shaddows the gnoll, staying some twenty feet behind him. stealth 11: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
After the gnoll leaves the crowd and moves to a unobserved corner, it gets harder to stay hidden and Simon is not sure if he got seen or not, but he follows him anyway. But as the gnoll simply rearrange his banner and 'uniform', Simon backs off. Slightly satisfied with another game of hide-and-seek. So he really is no official Gnoll... And I don't think that a spy of the governour would try that hard to keep his cover as an official. Interesting ...

Ahh, one question remains. What version of Simon am I going to play ... We have a bunch of melees' already as far as I can tell? Otherwise I do really like my melee concept and it should also put out a ton of dmg starting at lvl3...
What do you guys think? More the arrow-type, later riding on a bug cat's back or more the frontline teamwork-feat guy with sneak attack? (I like the last one more but the arrow type should be fine as well, while keeping me out of harms way, so less to heal for our poor healer :-))

I think you should lead as a ranged specialist for now.
As a sorcerer with melee capabilities, I intend to take a few ranged damaging spells of course, but mostly, I intend to take more controlling and party aid/buffing spells if I can help it.
So a good ranged shooter would do wonders for us I think.
I'm fine with either. Rett is, obviously, a frontliner with little in the way of range.

Hmm. Aleksara, not convinced "melee sorcerer" is a thing, but; surprise me, I guess.
Now that I've actually gotten into this game, I have a few questions about the special stuff:
-I used my "two upgrades" to increase my HD from 1d8 to 1d10. Is this actually only one upgrade? (If so, could I use my other one on boosting my will save, and then retrain Iron Will into Weapon Focus?)
-If I took Unchained Monk: Style Strike as my multiclass ability, would I get just one style strike or all of them? Would it be useless if I took it before level 5? And would it use fast movement 0, or fast movement of an equivalent-level monk?

Increase hit dice by one step (d8->d10) is counted as one upgrade. You could spend the other one for will save I think. If you can retrain now ... Don't know, you will have to wait for Infernals response.
Don't know why but I'm currently way more exited to play the melee variant. Reliable sneak attacks at lvl3 ... Gonna be scary I think. Will take a good bow nethertheless. Maybe I change my mind while playing through the first encounters, should not be the problem to change my profession on the fly. Would be two talents I would have choose anyway, earlier but certainly pick it.
So I stick with the hunter-rogue combo.

Really she's more sorcerer/monk/weaponsmith + enchanter later possibly- or at least that was my original idea...
I just got back from work, so I will keep this brief. Boss decided that double shift on the fly was a good idea. :/

Which reminds me...if we get the chance, and if the GM allows us, I might have some time later in the campaign to do some Weapon Making and Enchanting. I was considering making/enchanting "signature" weapons since we are supposed to eventually be "important" people in the Kintargo resistance, correct?
So think of a couple of cool ideas for a signature weapon your character might like made in the future...and how you "might" want them enchanted. I will need to take the correct spells eventually (or find scrolls possibly) for the right weapon abilities if it comes to it.
Basic Example: Blink uses a MW Silversheen Elven Curve Blade...an exotic weapon and perfect for enchanting later. Other than the basic +1 the blade will need, I could see adding the (to match her Character) the Mericful weapon ability (another +1), but that requires the cure light wounds spell which I cannot ever cast without a Use Magic Device check or GM intervention of some sort. However, if she wanted the Bane ability added to her weapon, that only needs summon monster I, which is easily a spell I can cast.
NOTEs:
1. We can worry about the cost/etc...later. I'm just asking for some basic ideas and generalities for now.
2. If you want a weapon made of a "Special Matieral" you will have to procure that material somehow. Just remember that.
3. There will also be level limits on what I will be able to accomplish, regardless of money involved.
4. You are free to discuss these weapon ideas here or by PM. No guarantees on when I can reply to such a message.
5. You may find something in game better than I can make, so again this idea is only for fun and a possibility at something kind-a cool.
6. I will not let this idea "take over." This is the GMs game and I will not do any of this she or I feel it will impact anybody's fun for this game.
Let me know what you guys think, and if this would be cool for the future?
If you want to and there's enough time, sure.
That's a really cool idea. I forget, can another spellcaster working with the crafter provide the spells?
If so, starting at level 4, Rett would be able to provide some paladin spells for this purpose.

I like crafting very much in any game :-)
Will you get the permanency spell eventually? Would be extremely nice to get that Greater Magic Fang for Emily permanent.
Also about enchantments ... As my fighting style relies on dex and as many attacks as possible m.. I would go with an agile weapon (need cat's grace) and the speed weapon (haste). Also flanking would be fun (need phantasm killer) to increase flanking bonus.

M Strix Kineticist (Elemental Ascetic) 1
Okay, let's see.
1) Another caster can provide the spells necessary for crafting a magic item; however, they need to cast those spells every single day until the item is finished. Alternately, the spells themselves are never actually necessary (they just impose a +5 to the crafting DC if oyu can't cast them).
2) "Enchantment" in PF and other d20 games refers to the school of magic, not making magic items like in GURPS.
3) Simon and Blink would be just as effective as crafting as Aleksara, if not more. It should just come down to who has the most unneeded feat slots.
4) Crafting masterwork weapons and armor is actually much harder than enchanting them; these will probably just be far easier to buy.
5) Simon: a sorcerer is going to be better off with a scroll of Permanency than sacrificing a 5th-level slot. And the only way a sorcerer CAN permanency GMF is with a second scroll, and a very high UMD roll; until level 15 or so you're much better off just casting the spell yourself 1/day since it's actually on your list.
Also, an Agile Speed weapon isn't going to be affordable until around level 10, and at that point there are far better weapons you can buy (Boots of Speed and a +3 agile weapon will hit much harder, etc).

1. I thought as much, but I wanted to look it up first before I said anything.
2. I'm not even sure why you brought this up since the difference is minor (Your capitol"E" Enchantment vs my regular "e" enchantment) and I thought was sufficient and off-hand enough for people to understand I was merely referencing a concept, not official rules or titles of rules in Pathfinder. Call it whatever you want, I think all of you guys understood my meaning well enough which is all that mattered.
3. My choices for feats are based on my character background and concept and how our games progress. If the others want to create magic items, then that is fine by me. I intend to take the Enchant Arms and Armor feat unless in the game it just does not make sense.
4. That's true, especially since I'm just a weaponsmith, but if you want to start crafting masterwork weapons made of special materials, or a signature style exotic weapon, then it could be much easier for me to just make it than commission it and pay full price. My guess is that in the end, most instances we will be capturing already magical weapons and upgrading them more often than not anyway.
5. I agree (on both the scroll and the Boots of Speed option) that it does make the most sense, but I have considered taking the Permanency spell too for various future reasons.

Hey, posting on behalf of the GM. She's dealing with some real serious RL stuff atm, and hopes to get a post up tonight, however its possible she might not be able to. Please bear with her.
I will be back after Deborah's funeral. I just haven't been able to do so since she passed. She was like a second mother to me here in the states and she is sorely missed. If you guys don't mind, please pray for Matt and his family. They are heartbroken over this turn of events.
My heart goes out to you and those close to the deceased, RVT.
Thanks for taking a moment to update us.

Since we are on a type of "On Hold" for now until the GM can get back to us, I thought I might take the time to keep things current by throwing up a little personal info, and say where I see my character going in this game once we get higher in levels.
I'm 44 years old, living in north Texas (Dallas). I have been gaming (RPGs) since the mid-eighties (Basic D&D). This is only my second PBP game however and I appreciate any leeway you guys are willing to throw my way here. I can usually post at least once every day, but multiple posts are sometimes possible at times as well. So far I think all of our characters are very interesting. I very am curious to see what our first combat together will be like.
Future: Aleksara is wide open in her future, as she is just looking for a home and hopes to find one in Kintargo. Like I've mentioned before I intend to try and focus on spells that have more than one use and do more utilitarian things rather than just combat spells, but I will also see where the game takes me as well. I still intend to take the Enchant Arms and Armor feat, and was also considering taking the Inscribe Magical Tattoo feat as well...but again I will see where we are going later.
So what about you guys? Where do you see your characters going further along from here once we have a few levels under our belts?

I HAVE RETURNED AND I BRING COOKIES! Well, figurative cookies that exist only in your head, but cookies nonetheless! ^_^
I will update everyone on how things went. Deborah's funeral took a bit longer to put together than most because of Desiree's plans for everything. The purple casket, a color she chose because of pancreatic cancer, had to be custom ordered, a lot of distant relatives had to be called and allowed time to show up, and it took a while to get other special arrangements set up for the funeral.
After the funeral, I stayed with TSP/Divinitus. My boss asked me to fulfill the secondary duties of my position as his now-primary secretary and represent him in Tokyo, so I took TSP/Divinitus with me to help him take his mind off of the recent tragedy. It worked extremely well and in between business meetings, which went surprisingly well despite how sexist most claim Japan is, we saw the hanging gardens, went to a cool little niche restaurant where monkeys dressed as waiters serve the food and booze, got to visit the neon district, and lots of other cool stuff!
So, after that period of tragedy and emotional cleansing, I feel ready to come back and return to my campaigns.
Let me get a preliminary showing of hands before we start back in case I need to fill any spots beforehand, yeah? I should be back to post after the party tonight.
I'm here. Alek, I'll reply to that soon.
Hallelujah!

Still around, and glad to hear that you're doing okay.
Now then: I'm 26, a software engineer from Montréal, Quebec. I've been tabletop gaming since late high school. I can post once a day, sometimes a short second post.
Rett was born to slavery in Kintargo, and is fully consumed by the ambition to liberate the city from its captors and slavers.
Build-wise, I'm focused on being a front-line monster. I intend to pick my mercies and spells centered around using Lay On Hands as a reserve of HP first and foremost (not that I'm averse to healing fellow party members when needed), and being as hard to kill as possible. He'll be dabbling in intimidation as well, with Cornugon Smash and the like.
M Strix Kineticist (Elemental Ascetic) 1
Oh. Are we doing refreshers on character roles?
Shiri is an outcast of Devil's Rock, a Strix who lost his wings (but will eventually gain flight magic). He's a melee glass cannon/debuffer; hits extremely hard, and will eventually be a permanently-invisible force who knocks enemies down and send them flying through the air (though those powers don't kick in until around level 8-10).
For now, he's just sort of a weird combination of punching and unique scouting powers. (At level 2, he gets at-will Whispering Wind, which should be pretty cool for organizing a rebellion).

Simon's here, but currently moving to his new place, so time is spare until Monday. Glad you returned :-)
Also Simon and me are a melee-team with a load of teamwork feats (so if some of you are interested in teamwork feats, you will most likely have us as partners). Simon is a scout (with high per and stealth) and will try and get some diplomacy skills over the next few ranks. Also he is quite capable at shooting with his bow. Also he has some minor healing and buffing and utility spells up his sleeve.

Can you post or PM the teamwork feats you have and plan to take in the future? That way we have an idea which ones to take if we do? If the game is as dangerous as we are lead to believe, it might not hurt for all of us to take at least one group teamwork feat at some point.
I think Outflank is my favorite Teamwork feat personally. Very straightforward.
I have a bit of a feat-hungry build already, but I'll keep an eye on what you guys pick and see if I can fit it in.

I don't have many plans, feat-wise, so I can probably find some room.
The first real gameplay post is now up. It's a little brief, to be sure, but I just wanted to get in those check results and such while you all finish up that fascinating exchange you have going on in gameplay, yeah?

I don't have my full let with me but outflank and pack flanking are on top of the list, also this teamwork feat which allow one a AoO if the partner crits and the like.
With packflanking or what it is called, Simon will be able to sneak attack at every attack starting at lvl 3, as long as he his side by side with Emily, because they are count as flanking as long as they stay near (5ft).

Rule Question: Simon would probably try to sneak-follow Rett, because he is just to curious about this job he is about to do and all. I imagine some action like when one blend in the mass of people in the assassins creed games, but I cannot find any rule whatsoever for that kind of action, as I am NOT trying to hide from all those people around (which would be near-impossible as all of them are watching me, but simply try to follow Rett, without him noticing me, by walking some ten meters behind him and blending in the mass of people.
Any comments or ideas how to resolve such a action? In my game I would rule that a simple stealth roll against Rett would suffice as long as he is not overly secretive or I cause any big noise, bumping into a merchant or something like this ... but that's only a quick guess and I feel that there will come many of these situations, so a clear rule would be welcome.

Sounds like a straight up stealth vs. perception check to me. Penalties and bonuses for the crowd might apply if the GM feel they are appropriate of course.
Go ahead, kitten. I haven't seen you.
Sorry gents, I just got off work not too long ago and Sunday I was watching a friend do a play-through of Farcry Primal! I am probably going to go catch some sleep before the morrow so expect a post of some substantiation later.
Simon Blue-Eye: I believe you simply make a stealth roll for that.

In one of my game, I had given a monk who wanted to be a strong weaponless (thus abandoning weapons completely which resulted in some problems for me with keeping her on the same treasure length as the others) access to some highly-forbidden alchemy of a crazy century-hunted alchemist who has developed 8 stacking formulas which slowly transforms the drinker into a human-dragon hybrid, making her a half-elf-half-dragon monk who will eventually become astral and semi-immortal (see monk's capstone).
Close enough for you Blink?^^
