Somewhere along the line, something's gone horribly wrong.
Out of nowhere, people by the hundreds were disappearing without a trace off the face of the Earth in their sleep, never to be found again. The world is in a state of panic, fingers are being pointed across the nations, suspicions arise that this is an act of war.
Those who disappeared know that something completely different is going on.
Waking up in a dark room with no idea how they got there, the only thing lighting the scene was a single holographic screen.
Please select class and race. It said. Once clicked, it lists a large selection of the options. Every choice you make, you're greeted with another. Select Archetype, distribute skill points, input name. And so on.
Upon finishing this odd request, you're struck with a white flash, suddenly waking up in the bed of an inn, another holographic screen floating in your line of sight.
Welcome to Golarion.
-Start at Level 1
-25-Point Build
-Any Class, any Archetype
-Any Race
-Uses Anti-Hero player option (instead of hero points, gain one extra bonus feat at 1st level)
-Max die roll for HP at first level.
-Max starting gold for your class.
-2 Character Traits (must match background) or 3 traits and a drawback.
-You get one gift. One CR1 magical item.
-Must be a consummate roleplayer.
-Detailed character background, motivation, experience with gaming (video or tabletop), and so on.
-Characters know that they are in a game, they can see the stats, they know when they take damage and level-up, and they handpick their feats, feel free to play around with that.

Sounds interesting. I'll definitely be thinking about a character. And definitely wondering the same thing as Philo Pharynx.
EDIT: Adding my reasoning behind allowing at least some, which is that there are a number of 3PP options that are really good. Dreamscarred Press is the main line that comes to mind, with Psionics being something that a lot of people like to have the option for (although I understand some don't like the aesthetic, and we do now have official Paizo Psychic Magic that's really good). But the Path of War supplement is fantastic, adds in extra systems for martials to have fun with, and allows for cool characters of that type. Also, given the likely basis for the theme of this game, they seem fitting. Just my two copper, though!
2nd Edit: Since it's something I know some people have professed, don't worry about learning a new system with the Path of War. It's really not complicated or hard to pick up. Mostly just a few abilities that can be used during encounters, and methods to get them back.

LAB Rat |

Definitely dotting this. Reminds me of a book series the name of which escapes me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd love to jump into a game where the players are people who have been sucked into a video game of sorts. Very exciting. I have no idea what I want to make yet, though.
I've got a few ideas bouncing around of who the character would actually be. Maybe a typical cubicle-bound office worker who hates his job and actually is thrilled to be able to experience something like this. Or an avid first-person-shooter player who could never get into RPG games only to find himself thrust into the middle of one. Or even a Wall Street executive who suddenly finds himself in a world he is not at all prepared for. I'll iron out exactly which I'm leaning towards, but I'm very open to suggestions of which you (or anyone, really) thinks are interesting.
Quick question for you, though. Did you mean a CL 1 Magic Item? Or am I just misunderstanding what you meant?

Jaster Kite |

Alright, I'm here again, time to answer some questions.
I meant CL 1 magic item. I've been writing a lot of CRs that this one just slipped. Sorry :) Too late to edit that one.
I allow 3rd party content as long as I have access to the document online, and it's not blatantly overpowered. Otherwise, I'm flexible on any 3rd party class or race you want.
Definitely digging LAB Rat's ideas, and I'll be happy with any one of them. I feel to mention that you should definitely follow his lead. Detail your life before this had happened, because the game only takes place three days after (hence starting at CR1). What they did for a living, whether they've played any type of video game or tabletop game or not, past relationships in the real world, and their reaction to being an ordinary person thrust into extraordinary situations.
Posting Expectations? I'll assume that means speed and length. This is going to be a long-runner campaign, as I have big plans for the story. I like roleplaying between characters, so that's another must, and beyond roleplaying, you're not going to find yourself at a loss for combat experience.
Any more questions?

The Archlich wrote:Hey Kite! How do you feel about the "Harrowed" race from Obsidian Apocalypse? Do you have access to it? :) They're "living dead" due to the plague.Don't have access to it, do you have a link?
I have the book itself - trying to find a reference online. It's from LPJ Design.

Newbonomicon |

While allowing third party is a bit off-putting to me, I like this idea enough that I'm still interested. A couple of questions!
Are you going to change anything about the setting to better fit the MMO concept, or should we assume the world of Golarion is presented as-is?
What is your stance on PVP, and if you aren't opposed to it, will the MMO setting present any special allowances for it?

Demon Lurking |

Man, this reminds me a bit of Otherland, a series by Tad Williams. Also a little bit of Guilded Age.
I'll have to come up with something. I love the concept.

Jaster Kite |

Deko, You found me! Rock on! :) I'd love to see that character, write it up.
Cydrius, got your message, and I think the whole board deserves to hear about your character.
Johnycat, I don't think it's too heavy. I dealt with heavier. Ain't too heavy for the rest of you, is it?
Newbonomicon, I actually only just started using 3rd party classes, and reluctantly, but oh, the amount of characters they could make... anyways, there will be a precious few. PVP, well... since if you die here, you die in real life, could be considered an evil act. So, unless they deserve it (or you're playing an evil character), that might require an alignment check.
Sach. Completely out of nowhere. Nobody even heard of it, and since you have to be 'activated' to hear of it, nobody's still heard of it.

Cydrius |

I'll be pitching an Unsworn Shaman who has very little experience with RPG gaming. I'd rather not say more until I actually post it.
(Thanks for hearing me out through PM, Jaster.)
EDIT: This is the alias I'll be using. I'll avoid posting as it until selection is over. (I prefer to keep my profile free of characters that didn't make the cut.)

"The Lucky Halfling" |

I find it quite amusing that I stumble across this after talking with a work colleague about "Sword Art Online" and "Log Horizon".
Will this game be strictly adventuring or will we make use of other systems like downtown? Seems like those thrust into another world would need to find a way to sustain themselves.

Sword Art Online? Whaaaat? Never heard of that before...
There will be adventuring, and I'm not quite familiar with the term downtown. Also, forgot to mention it, but I'm probably going to make use of that system in the advanced campaign guide (of which the name escapes me) where you would be able to run shops, taverns, inns, the like.
Jaster Kite |

I think both of you are referring to the "Downtime" system.
Is it alright to have a character whose goal is to escape the world, or will that be disruptive towards anything you have planned?
Hmm, what coincidence we were thinking the same thing.
Yeah, it's perfectly fine. I'm sure 90% of the population is trying to escape.
Cydrius |

How about a character who definitely does 'not' want to leave the world?
Also, I am completely unfamiliar with Sword Art Online, except for the most basic of ideas. Is this something that could be a problem for me here?

Would be fine, too. Chances are the two of you could work together to help with each other's goals.
You don't have to be familiar. While there are certainly some cues taken from the anime, it'll, hopefully, be it's own thing.

Cydrius |

Alright, thanks!
Bit of a rules question here, because this is really all up to the GM's ruling:
As an unsworn shaman, my hexes are wandering, and change each day.
If I take extra hex, would the extra hex gained be a static hex, as per the basic hex class feature, or would it be wandering, as per the Unsworn Shaman's altered Hex class feature?

Hmm, doing the math, I want to say Wandering.

Mimesyne |

Reminds me a bit of .hack
Anyways, I was thinking of going with a younger character, somewhere between 10 and 14, from a family where the parents stayed together 'for the children' and fight constantly. To escape the constant scream fests from the kitchen, my character drowns herself online on various messageboards and video games.
I'm thinking a ranged class, or potentially a pet/minion class would suit her best.

Alright throwing my hat in for this:
Quaryl, the Grippli Fighter (Titan Fighter) and his account holder ZigBlck.
Name: Annonymous
User Name: ZigBlck
Gaming History: Long time MMO raider, once a dedicated tank but decided he was tired of the min/maxing life and now enjoys playing unusual character concepts. He's never revealed his personal information because he feels that real world knowledge prevent him from complete immersion. He prefers to be called by his character name and responds angrily when anyone uses his account name.
Personal History:ZigBlack is a very wealthy lawyer from Manhattan named Ignatius Black (Ziggy to his family). He's fearful of anyone in his profession discovering that he plays online games and has cultivated an atmosphere of anonymity both online, and from his coworkers, often affecting a terrible sickness so he can avoid going out after work. Allowing him the time to dedicate to progressing his various characters among any MMO released in the last 10 years. His biggest fear is being discovered and losing the prestige he has gathered as a talented lawyer, at least before he's given a chance at partner for the firm he works for.
Character Background: Quaryl was a rare Grippli, stronger than most, and adept at wielding weapons as large as himself, he was quickly praised as the tribes protector. He spent years honing his abilities in the swamps he called home, keeping a watchful eye over his tribe and responding swiftly to any threats.
Unfortunately, swamps attracted enemies even a strong Grippli defender could not overcome. Seen often flying over the swamps in the Shackles, the dread black dragon Machazmroh attracted a number of evil creatures looking to gain his favor. One evening a large Kobold raid destroyed his home and carried the dead to the dragon to consume as an offering. The only reason he survived is because he had covered himself in the toxic poison the could produce from his skin and the Kobolds had been afraid to touch his body once he'd been knocked unconscious. When he woke, it was among the few dead that had not been carried away. With no reason left to stay in the swamps Quaryl left, hoping to gain power enough to one day come back and slaughter the Kobolds with his bare hands.
Wasn't sure if you mean motivation and history for the 'player' of Golarion Online, or for me as an actual individual, so, feel free to let me know if you meant the latter.

"There is no situation sufficiently stable that it can not be made worse by the addition of a catgirl."
-- Ancient wisdom.
My idea is about a girl who's not a gamer, but chose to log on in order to surprise her boyfriend (who had to work late and didn't get in)
I'm going with dawnflower dervish bard. I'll have more later.

You might want to know that Jaster Kite stated that nobody, except those that have been activated, have heard of Golarion Online.

Philo Pharynx |

Okay, is Golarion online based on Pathfinder? After all, if we have characters with system knowledge, then we need to have been exposed to this. If so, I can make her work. If not, I'll need to rethink my background.
----
By the way, be ready for some absolutely evil stuff to happen in game. If our GM casually releases WMD* on the actual players in the recruitment forum, just imagine what he's going to do to our characters.
*Weapon of Memetic Destruction. i.e. a non-spoilered link to TVTropes. I made my save this time, but only because I've experienced the devastating results before.
