Valgrim |
i believe so, it just states ranged or melee. But it does not specifically state not for grappling. In Ultimate Magic if you have it.
GM thunderspirit |
Compy and Endar quickly realize that the creature's multiple eyes do not allow them to flank it, or catch it unawares (no precision damage)! His pike does a bit, while Compy's bite manages to do all of its normal damage!
Valgrim's arrow strikes the thing's tough hide with no effect, but his determination ability affects the monster's attempt to maintain the grapple on Endar!
Grapple (1) vs CMD 16: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Grapple (2) vs CMD 16: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
The beast cannot hold onto the slippery rouge! Frustrated, it turns its attention to Compy!
bite 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
bite 1 dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
bite 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
bite 2 dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 plus free grab attempt
grab: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12 Nope
bite 3: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
bite 3 confirm?: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26 Yup
bite 3 dmg: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (2, 3) + 4 = 9 plus free grab attempt
grab: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 Haha, nope
bite 4: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
bite 4 dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 plus free grab attempt
grab: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16 LOL, SLIPPERIEST DINO EVAR
Looks like Compy drops here, so attacks 5 and 6 will be on Endar.
bite 5: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
bite 5 dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
bite 6: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
bite 6 dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 plus free grab attempt
grab: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Endar looks to drop here as well, if my maths are good.
And spits at Kinn! spittle vs. Endar's touch AC: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
If hit, DC 20 Fort save or blinded for 1d4 ⇒ 1 rounds!
You guys are up! Incidentally, the spit is a ranged touch attack so it provokes from all adjacent foes, though it does not prevent the spit attack. I will rule that Endar and Compy get the attack too, just cos. :-)
Mordenaar |
Finally sure of himself, Mordenaar moves right in with his Sinister blade and stabs at the creature:
Gladius: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 1 = 28 for DMG: 1d6 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 1 = 5
Gladius: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 1 = 15 add if confirmed DMG: 1d6 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 1 = 8
GM thunderspirit |
DC 19 Refl: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
GM thunderspirit |
This is a gibbering mouther, a disgusting, loathsome aberration straight out of a nightmare.
Gibbering mouthers are amorphous (immune to precision damage and able to move through small spaces without squeezing), and their eyes prevent them from being flanked.
They have damage reduction overcome by bludgeoning weapons.
Mordenaar's blade strikes home but doesn't appear to have any effect!
Endar the Entertainer |
pike AOO: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
compy AOO: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Yes, your maths are correct, Endar and Compy are both down. Endar is at -5, Compy -4
Endar stabilize: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 nope
Compy stabilize: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 nope
Kinn |
Fort: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
Kinn ignores the goo and strikes home with his blade!
AoO Scimitar: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
He follows through with the strike and steps behind the beast, spinning to slash again.
Scimitar @ Mouths: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15 no flanking bonus included, though Kinn doesn't know that
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Valgrim |
Valgrim moves up to Endar and casts stabilize on him... he will attempt to drag Endar away from the fight this turn, or next turn if he is unable. "Keep it busy whilst I get Endar back up!" Valgrim shouts to the others informing him of his actions and plans.
Dungeon Master S |
who has a bludgeoning weapon? I'll switch to aiding.
-Posted with Wayfinder
Kinn |
"The blade does seem rather ineffective," Kinn agrees, dropping it point-first into the dirt. He tugs his morningstar free of his belt.
If GM will allow, I'll do this for my remaining move action this turn. If not, I'll do it at the start of my next turn. It only matters for AoOs.
GM thunderspirit |

Sure, that's fine.
I'll use the wand of infernal healing on Endar
Duly noted, and on deck for this upcoming round. ;-)
Endar, Kinn, and Compy cannot hit with their attacks of opportunity!
Kinn's follow-up attack fares no better, even with his morningstar in hand!
Valgrim moves up and stabilizes the unconscious rogue!
The creature turns its attention to Mordenaar!
bite 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
bite 1 dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
bite 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

bite 4: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
bite 4 dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 plus free grab attempt
grab: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24 Success
bite 5 vs. flat-footed AC: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
bite 5 dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
bite 6 vs. flat-footed AC: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
bite 6 dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
As the assault on the slayer concludes, Achmed arrives and delivers the wand charge to Endar!
DC 19 Refl: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Endar, Kinn, Mordenaar, and Valgrim are up! Achmed also gets to roll damage for the flaming sphere for this round.
Kinn |
"Hold on, Mordenaar!"
Morningstar @ Mouths: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 +2 if Mordenaar aids
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 bludgeoning and piercing, cold iron
Valgrim |
Valgrim will drag the rogue's body back to a safe distance this round...
Endar the Entertainer |
Endar heals 1 from infernal healing.
Compy stabilize (DC 15): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 Nope.
GM thunderspirit |
Compy continues to bleed, though some of Endar's wounds heal up a bit as Valgrim drags him out of the monstrosity's reach!
The grappled Mordenaar tries to aid Kinn's attack, but the paladin's weapon does not connect!
Mordenaar is a tasty morsel: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Success
The slayer is engulfed by the monster!
nom nom nom: 6d4 ⇒ (1, 2, 4, 4, 2, 3) = 16 plus CON dmg: 1d2 ⇒ 1
This works as the swallow whole ability for escaping. DR will still apply.
You guys are up!
Valgrim |
Valgrim quickly heals Endar...CMW: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1) + 4 = 8... before going back to support the fight while looking for his blunt arrows...
CLB+PBS: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 1 = 27...DMG Blunt: 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 = 7
GM thunderspirit |
Valgrim, do you have something that lets you do the cure spell as a Swift action? Otherwise you have two Standard actions there and I need to know which one you are going to do.
Valgrim |
you are correct. my bad. I will do the attack first and then heal him next turn since someone got eaten
GM thunderspirit |
Cool. Asking in no small part to be sure I didn't miss something spiffy for my own Inquisitor, LOL.
Forgot my DC 19 Refl: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
flaming sphere dmg: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9
Achmed's spells damage the monster while Mordenaar escapes the grapple, bite marks and blood — his own, mostly — all over him!
Valgrim's blunt-tipped arrows appear to have full effect on the beast!
Endar, Kinn!
Endar the Entertainer |
Endar gurgles, still unconscious, and heals another damage.
Compy stabilize, DC 16: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 Nope.
Kinn |
"LET. HIM. GO!!!" Kinn smashes as hard as he can with the morningstar.
Morningstar @ Mouths: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 UGH
...into the dirt.
"Get yourself away, Mordenaar! Leave it to me!" I'm at full health and can heal myself rapidly.
GM thunderspirit |
It is only a Standard; however, your benevolent GM would take this opportunity to point out that provoking from a creature that's not grappled and can grab as a Free action may not be wholly prudent.
GM thunderspirit |
Yep, Mordenaar came out prone, covered in blood. Just like being born. LOL
I will allow an Acro check, though.
</benevolent GM>
GM thunderspirit |
Acrobatics: 17
Which provokes.
MWAHAHA!
AoO: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
bite dmg: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 plus free grab attempt
grab: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28 Success
The monster does not like his meal getting away!
Endar gets better while Compy gets worse, and Kinn swings wildly as he tries to save the slayer!
GM thunderspirit |
you fool! he baited you!
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders — the most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia" — but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line"!
Mordenaar is a tasty morsel (the sequel): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Ooh! The slayer is not engulfed this round!
spit (Free action, provokes from Kinn, vs Valgrim's touch AC: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
You guys are up!
Kinn |
@ Achmed: with a five-foot, yes.
Kinn swings wildly as the creature tries to eat Mordenaar. Again.
AoO @ Mouths: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Filled with hope by the creature's failure, Kinn regains his focus!
Morningstar @ Mouths: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27 THERE WE GO
DAMAGE YOU BAST*RD: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 cold iron, bludgeoning and piercing
"Save yourself, man! Leave it to me!!!"
GM thunderspirit |
Dammit, my confirmation that Achmed could do so (and with the failed Reflex save for the flaming sphere) got eaten by the Paizo Postmonster! :-/
The combination of fire damage and morningstar to the mouth finally puts the beast down!
Out of combat!
Kinn |
Kinn breathes a deep sigh of relief (perhaps several) and immediately sets about healing Compy and Mordenaar.
CLW (Compy): 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
CLW (Mordenaar): 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Edit: I'll spend a LoH on Mordenaar too. We can figure out the rest with the wands.
Lay on Hands (Mordenaar): 3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 5) = 13
Valgrim |
save the charges if we can use spells first. Valgrim has a CWM and a CLW to use on the wounded.
Endar the Entertainer |
When Endar awakens, he immediately runs over to Compy, who has shrunken down to his normal (Tiny) size now. He seems alright, though, so Endar thanks his friends. "I have no healing abilities, but I would be happy to replace any gold spent in healing myself and my friend, here."
Endar is at 5HP thanks to the infernal healing and compy is at -1 but stable. Thanks guys!
