Technically, the kobolds' HD are not high enough to register. But I've never liked that part of the spell/ability (and this is campaign mode, durnit!), so...

Kinn detects a slight presence of evil. He opts for lethal damage, slicing Green across his chest. The kobolds staggers a bit from the blow!

Endar — miss
Achmed — sling

Kind benevolent GM throws a bone to his players.

The party examines the places they have been in the dungeon thoroughly, but don't find anything that seems to be a way to get into the cage.

Glumly, they trudge back out, unhappy about the rewards they've unearthed. Hardly seems worth it, risking our lives for just these baubles, thinks everyone except Kinn, who's clearly above such material things. ;-)

At the base of the ladder that leads up from the torture room. Mordenaar sits to rest a bit, idly balancing his gladius on his fingertips. His balance is not perfect, however, and the blade falls, embedding itself in a pile of dirt near the collapsed wall.

Mordenaar looks at it a moment. Then...

That's it! he exclaims, leaping to his feet. He leads the party back to the cage room and has Achmed slide a dagger into one slot while he slides one into another. With a groan and a noisy grinding of gears, the bars slowly begin to descend into the ground, revealing access to the chests within!

Endar makes quick work of the getting into the seven chests, inside which cam be found 18,500 copper pieces; 4,000 silver pieces; 115 gold pieces; 14 platinum pieces; and a teak case with a score and a half of gems (total value for gems and case is 800 gp).

You return and report to the baroness at her home, who promptly provides your promised reward. She has the napping kobold taken into custody and looks thoughtful as you report. If you would like, Lady Origena says, a slight smile showing, I may have a job where you can earn a fair bit more.

I've long been suspicious of the local kobold tribe; they took up residence near the flooded quarry some years back, but before now they've never caused trouble so there was no need to drive them away. The time for that has come, I think. She thinks a moment, then continues as she rises and crosses to a portrait of a dapper, smirking man who resembles her son Arnholde. Belhaim is not a rich community, but this service is worth quite a bit to us. Lady Origena cants the portrait to the side, revealing a hole in the wall. She reaches in and retrieves a handsome wooden box. If you can drive these pests off, I can offer you this: a gift from my late husband. She opens the box to reveal a thick golden chain strung with a dozen dark amethysts.

DC 12 Appraise:
The piece of jewelry is worth about 1200 gp.

She confirms that the human body found matches the appearance of the wizard Balthus Hunclay, and her face darkens a bit. I'm sure that old fool had something to do with this; it's too coincidental for him to be in the company of those things. For the time being, however, please stay clear of his manor. Hunclay was a misanthropic loner, and a wizard besides; his home is no doubt filled with traps and dangers. I would not want to be responsible for any of you turning into a toad.

The flooded quarry is located a quarter mile from Belhaim. The Old Quarry Road is no longer used, and has become quite overgrown; few from Belhaim have had any reason to head out there for some time.

Your party makes its way along the path, moving ever closer to the lake formed when the quarry flooded. A fifty-foot-wide strip of shore stretches between the lake's edge and the forty-foot-high quarry wall. It's strewn with stony debris, the result of centuries of rockslides. Several larger boulders stand against the middle of the quarry wall.

DC 20 Perception:
You can see a quartet of kobolds near the cave entrance. They appear vigilant but do not seem to have noticed you yet.
