GM Woran |
Since my math skills are abominable, I'm rolling miss chance the same as I would do as I was a player. Locally we always say 'high is good ' (for me). And I'm so used to that doing it opposite is kinda hard for me to do it otherwise, even when GMing. Which makes it kinda weird if I have to roll miss chance for others. Especially as there are two different percentages going on. As you have 50% miss chance against me, but I have 20% miss chance against you. To make it easier and more clear, it would be best if you roll your own miss chance. Dayo identified the spell, so its no secret that the Barghest is under the effect of a Blink spell. So you can look up if miss chance would apply to you. Miss chance would still apply to Dayo's attack.
Dayo |
Oh I didn't know Blink was in effect.
By definition, if you have a 50% miss chance, then anything 01-50 misses. If you have a 20% miss chance, then anything 01-20 misses.
I personally find it a bit annoying when people change that or call out their own numbers. I realize a 1 or 2 on a d4 is statistically the same, or that calling out that "low is best for me" doesn't change the probability, but it 1) is inconsistent and confusing when everyone at the table uses their own system (as we're seeing here), and 2) speaks of an elitist or privileged need to "be different" from everyone else, which leads to social inequalities in the group dynamic. But that's just me.
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 63
Eoghan Miskos |
Fair enough about the elitism part. I personally don't mind, but not everyone does. I hereby give everyone permission to roll for me if necessary. High will always be good for me.
Also, oof. Blink coupled with my Strength damage means I'll barely damage him.
GM Woran |
I understand my post might have been confusing. Its not out of any need to be different, but mostly my inability to abstractly thing with numbers. If high is always good, then that is always that way. Which makes it get weird when I'm rolling someone else's miss chance against myself. If this all feels weird/unfair, I think the easiest way to resolve it, looking at percentages, is to have one of the attacks on Eoghan miss.
''Vitro'' Wizjietroczenon |
Vitro looks at Eoghan getting flattened, the snowball sailing through empty space, and the magic missile striking true.
"Never mind, keep firing away with those."
I've moved Dayo into melee position.
Vitro twists his foot on the ground and calls up some sour gases to annoy the barghest and just maybe nauseate it. Since it's an area effect that lasts for a whole round, I don't know if rapidly blinking in and out will help, since you can't dodge it that way.
Acid: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
DC 15 fort for half; if you fail you're also sickened.
GM Woran |
fort save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Vitro: The Baghest barely seems to notice Vitro's attack but it does have effect
Justin: The magic missle strikes true
Barghest: Gleefully attacks Dayo
bite: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 16 + 2 = 26 miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 44
bite damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
claw: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 16 + 2 = 19 miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 87
claw damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
claw: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 16 + 2 = 22 miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 71
claw damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Round 2
Justin
Vitro
Barghest 43 damage
Eoghan 36 damage
Dayo 30 damage
Snowflake
Vy "Snowflake" Baro |
Vy absorbs some of Day's wounds. He than asks the gods for their blessing while loading his crosbow.
Vy casts Bless, takes 5 HP damage while Dayo heals 5 damage
Dayo |
"I walk the path that is presented to me."
Flurry #1, Smite, Bless: 1d20 + 11 + 3 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 11 + 3 + 1 - 2 = 17
Slashing Damage, Smite: 1d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 2 = 9 (overcomes any DR)
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 13
Flurry #2, Smite, Bless: 1d20 + 11 + 3 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 11 + 3 + 1 - 2 = 26
Slashing Damage, Smite: 1d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 2 = 10 (overcomes any DR)
Miss Chance: 1d100 ⇒ 65
Pretty sure that first one missed so I crossed it out for you ^_^
''Vitro'' Wizjietroczenon |
Satisfied that gas warfare seems to be working, and with his current position helping to shield off Vy a bit, Vitro continues.
acid cloud: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Justin Norvegicus |
"Thats it hold him there I can keep this up all day "
bluff check: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1
magic Missile: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (1, 3, 1) + 3 = 8
Justin is out of tricks for today...pulls out a healing potion
GM Woran |
Justin: Shoots another magic missle.
Barghest: "Ech wäert de Kraiz aus de Knuewe geännert!"
bite: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 16 + 2 = 38 miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 76
bite confirm?: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 16 + 2 = 32
bite damage: 2d8 + 8 ⇒ (1, 4) + 8 = 13
claw: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 16 + 2 = 30 miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 85
claw damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
When Dayo falls down after the bite and claw, the Barghest turns around and claws at Vitro.
claw: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 16 + 2 = 29 miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 100
claw damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Round 3
Justin
Vitro 11 damage
Barghest 55 damage
Eoghan 36 damage
Dayo 30 damage
Snowflake 5 damage
''Vitro'' Wizjietroczenon |
Vitro keeps a fairly stiff upper lip while losing some entrails. "Well, crap. I was hoping that whatever was keeping it in here also prevented it from sticking its paws outside the room to swipe at us."
You forgot to save vs. sickened from the acid cloud, that might have cut down a bit on the damage (-6 for Dayo, -2 for me).
Vitro tries another snowball.
ranged touch: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
miss chance, high is good for me: 1d100 ⇒ 51
damage: 5d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 1, 4, 5, 4) + 1 = 20
He mutters to Justin:
"temptare aqua quia nefas"
GM Woran |
fort save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Hm. With 6 less damage, Dayo would not have gone down, and the last attack would also gone to him. This would also lead to the least amount of recalling, as Dayo would still go down, and Vitro would attack. Vitro just wouldnt get any damage then.
Round 3
Justin
Vitro
Barghest 55 damage
Eoghan 36 damage
Dayo 33 damage
Snowflake 5 damage
These should be the correct damage totals then
Also, Snowflake is up!
Vy "Snowflake" Baro |
Snowflake abosbs some of Dayo's pain, channels his anger into his weapon and smites the Barghest
ranged: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 1 = 8
danage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Vy takes 5 hp damage, Dayo heals 5 hp
Justin Norvegicus |
"I want my statue to replace that ugly one in underpoint "
Justin pops out of existence and re appears pulling dayo by the leg
" This always worked when mom did it...."
reposition combat manuever: 1d20 - 3 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (9) - 3 - 1 + 1 = 6
GM Woran |
Can you take someone with you with the ethereal jaunt?
Justin: takes a little ethereal shortcut to end up next to Dayo.
Barghest: Sees the little rat man appear, but dismisses it as harmless.
It squeezes its large form inbetween the fire and the door so it can bite at the most dangerous thing: Vitro.
bite: 1d20 + 16 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 16 + 2 - 4 = 17 miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 44
bite damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
But the squeezing causes it to miss!
Round 4
Justin
Vitro
Barghest 75 damage
Eoghan 31 damage
Dayo 28 damage
Snowflake 10 damage
Snowflake is up again!
Vy "Snowflake" Baro |
Vy takes on more damages, reloads, and drops the croswbows, draws his morningstar, and smacks the Barghest
melee: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 7 + 1 = 20
damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
miss chance, high is good for Vy: 1d100 ⇒ 73
Vy takes 5 damage, Dayo heals 5
''Vitro'' Wizjietroczenon |
@BNW: Holy water does 2d4 damage, not 1d6.
With the monster too close for another snowball, Vitro shifts into a lower crouch and calls up more acid gas.
cast defensively: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
acid cloud: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
DC 15 to halve damage and avoid Sickened
He also shuffles back a bit.
GM Woran |
fort save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Also counting 4 more damage from the holy water
Vitro: Lays down another acid cloud. The Barghest coughs a bit, but seems less affected this time.
Barghest: Seems to push against invisible bars in the doorway, its claws reaching out to Vitro, but it just cant reach. no action, just to illustrate what is going on
With the elf unreachable, the other snack in reach is the little rat man...
bite: 1d20 + 16 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 16 + 2 - 4 = 16 miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 32
bite damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
claw: 1d20 + 16 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 16 + 2 - 4 = 34 miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 1
claw damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
claw: 1d20 + 16 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 16 + 2 - 4 = 24 miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 29
claw damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
The Barghest bites and claws at justin, but it misstimes one of its attacks, swiping just at the moment he blinks.
Round 4
Justin 28 damage
Vitro
Barghest 87 damage
Eoghan 31 damage
Dayo 23 damage
Snowflake 15 damage
Dayo and Snowflake are up!
Vy "Snowflake" Baro |
First, Vy needs some healing
lay on hands: 1d6 ⇒ 5
He takes some damage from Dayo
Now to try and take care of that foul beast
melee: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 1 = 27
miss change, high is good for Vy: 1d100 ⇒ 91
if it hits
damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Vy heals, but also takes 5 damage. Dayo heals 5
''Vitro'' Wizjietroczenon |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |
Vitro takes no chances and calmly tries to stick his sword through the still-blinking body, eventually settling for holding his sword where the heart ought to phase back in.
"Well. Well. That went better than we really had any right to expect..."
He remarks a bit wryly, surveying three people laying crumpled on the floor.
Vy "Snowflake" Baro |
Now that the battle is over, Vy can talk normal again
"Thank you for making sure it's dead. Makes this more effecient"
He starts channeling three times.
Channel Positive energy: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Channel Positive energy: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Channel Positive energy: 1d6 ⇒ 2
He quits his lifelink with Dayo though
Everybody heals 10 hp, Vy heals 6 extra plus 2 I forgot for the lay on hands
Justin Norvegicus |
"Oh. good. That worked. Nice Job drawing it out bait. " he gets up on all fours... and thinks thats far enough. "I'm just gonna go upstairs get some crickets and see whats in the OTHER room tomorrow. SOund like a plan?"
