Keeping Justin Here

Should make him easier to track

V when you get back inquiring rats want to know whats in your spellbook.

our loot sheet is here i will work on it if i don't cut off some fingers on todays episode of this old house.

Of note there's a set of masterwork thieves tools if Eoghan doesn't have any. Otherwise justin will keep them and continue his practice so he can at least aid another.

If you missed it (because i forgot about it) we bribed convinced warren to let us use the adventuring/non adventuring skills rules , so you have 2 extra skill points per level to throw into things like craft or lore or profession.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I already have masterwork thieves' tools, thanks.
I did not know we used background skills, that's more skill ranks for me! :D I'm kinda crap at most, but I'll think of something. Linguistics is always good, even though it's not a class skill. Thinking of a profession or Craft that's suitable for me, but I'm drawing a blank right now. Geography is the only knowledge skill I'm trained in, but it doesn't fit the character.

Also, I always thought Justin hated Eoghan, but it took a while to realise he's just an a~$~@*~. :P

[retired]

Yeah Bignorsewolf and I are in another PbP AP, and my character is supposed to be the a**!*@@ there, but his character has quickly converted from innocent sappy angel to my side of the court.

Dead Suns:

Take your time to level. Christmas is coming up, so I'm expecting a few slow days ahead. I'll make a big post to wrap up book 1, and then we can get a good start of book 2 in the new year.

[retired]

How much money do we have to spend?

After selling all the loot and the helmet ^_^

Justins a walking example of the difference between nice and kind. He's absurdly group minded, and expects people to do what they can do as efficiently as possible. Combine that with a ratfolks "yeah we're gonna die thats why we have 30 kids" fatalism and well.. It may not entirely be a coincidence that he's out on his own.

dayo wrote:

I was picturing it on the wall to the town on some sort of turning turret for burning hands and or fireball...

M Large Canine Level 3 druid

Loot Sheet updated.

Eoghan has a page, that should drop cash into his account as we sell stuff.

There's some unidentified potions.

There's also a magical bastard sword and breastplate in the pile if those would help Eoghan.

Snowflakes probably not going to let us melt down that gold holy symbol for cash is he?

Try to ID as much as possible so we know what we're selling.

we have 2 arcanists in the party one of us should get lucky with the detect magic.

Dead Suns:

Was that Nualia's sword? Its been a few days. I'm sure one of you would have been lucky by now.

I hope an overweight old man broke into your house and emptied his sack all over it!*

*Or whatever other crude depiction of your faith you adhere to.

I'm in doubt over my background skills. Linguistics seems appropriate to know enemy languages, but I'm stuck with my second skill. I figured Eoghan is a semi-seasoned adventurer, but profession soldier sounds too formal. Mercenary? Would that be appropriate?

[retired]

Knowledge (geography)?

Perform dark brooding poetry?

The –2 Charisma mod really should be a bonus for that.

Speaking of bonuses and penalties, Justin I think your CMD should be 10% higher ^_^

Yeah, it makes sense that if he's been adventuring, he knows the lay of the land. I'll stick my background points in Geography and Engineering. He's had to rig some stuff together before.

Also, I'm still walking around with Strength damage. Is there some downtime in between books, or are we expected to fight the very next day?

I think it took us days to get the statue to town.

Sovereign Court

I'm back from holidays, I'll level up when I get a chance to sift through things.

* I forgot how we tracked wealth. I have a list of some stuff on my sheet but I'm clueless about what else I might have. Can anyone help me out?

* What are the possibilities for buying extra spells? Picking up Identify makes sense for example.

Dead Suns:

When you get back to sandpoint, if Vorvashali doesnt have it in stock, he can order scrolls from Magnimar.

There is a few days travel time from Thistletop back to sandpoint. Especially now you're dragging the helm along.

M Large Canine Level 3 druid

our loot sheet is here

It's set up to automatically drop gold into your account on your page when the items are sold.

M Large Canine Level 3 druid

We need a bunch of stuff ID'd and valued for selling/keeping purposes. And permission to cause a glut in the small person armor market. If there a militant halfling group in the area?

(if that helmet isn't worth much i am SO turning it into a death turret)

Justin and Vitro should combine shopping lists for shipping.

HP 45/49 | AC17 T10 FF15 CMD20 (+1 on all vs traps)| F+9 R+5 (+6 for traps) W+8 (immune to fear and disease)| Init+2 | Perception +12 (+1 for traps) (automatic Perception check within 10 ft of a trap, at +13), low-light vision | speed 20 ft

Updated the information in my Profile to reflect level 4.

Dead Suns:

Good thing I was looking at the list.

What ever will you do with Tongue Tongue the Riding Gecko?!

Nualia had a +1 breastplate and a +1 bastard sword. Her seven pointed medalion is a Sihedron medallion.
Bruthazmus had one elf slaying arrow left....

[retired]

Put him to work at the local garbage dump eating seagulls?

@Justin: a while back I changed my spreadsheet to make it easier to track stuff, then promptly forgot it existed.

How much gold do we each get?

1 person marked this as a favorite.
M Large Canine Level 3 druid

People have different amounts depending on when they dropped in. Dayo has an income cel in column D . So far he has 960 gold. If we sell more or trade in old gear it will go up automatically.

There is a masterwork composite longbow if Vitro wants to upgrade to it.

There is a +1 breastplate if Eoghan wants it

A +1 bastard sword if Eoghan wants it

A second mw composite longbow if Eoghan wants it

Justin would like the medallion. It is really cool and he has been playing emergency meat shield more times than he'd like.

Who wants the ring of force shield?

For everything else I'd need to know its value to plug it in.

[retired]

I don't suppose Oskar's +1 ring of protection could find its way back to the group? ^_^

M Large Canine Level 3 druid

on second thought the medalion should probably go on a meat shield.

I'd very much like the bastard sword and the breastplate, yes. I can throw my masterwork breastplate back in to sell.

Sovereign Court

Do you think Justin and Vitro should put money together for a page of Spell Knowledge (Mage Armor)? Seems like a good way to conserve spells-known slots. Some past encounters could have been easier if I'd had a free slot for Magic Missile.

[retired]

Justin already knows mage armor (he's been casting it on me).

A page of spell knowledge adds a spell you don't know to your list of spells known.

Isn't Vitro a prepared caster anyways? A page won't help him.

Arcanists are weird in that they're both prepared and spontaneous casters. They select a handful of spells each day they potentially want to cast, and those casts are spontaneous. A Page of Spell Knowledge would give an Arcanist basically an extra spell known per day.

Sovereign Court

Yeah, I mainly like pages of spell knowledge for things you only cast about once per day, which otherwise really eats into your spells known per day. And since we'd both be using the spell it's economical.

[retired]

If that's how it works for Arcanists, okaaay, but you can only use it once before its magic is expended.

They're not like fruitcakes.

Sovereign Court

@Dayo: are you sure we're looking at the same item? this one is quite reusable

M Large Canine Level 3 druid

Arcanists use spell latices which can hot potatoe. Justin would glady buy a time share in one.

Ascalaphus wrote:

It is not. You read it once, and you add the spell to your your list of spells known.

If it was reusable there'd never need to be more than one in existence. Every spontaneous caster would just read it and pass it on.

I believe what you want is a spell lattice (same price).

The page of spell knowledge only works for the bearer. You can t read it and pass it on. You have to hold it to have any effect

Sovereign Court

@Dayo: while you're holding it, you count the spell as a spell known. So you hold it, cast Mage Armor which lasts for hours, and pass on the page to the other guy.

The spell lattice is [also] for psychic casters, because the page of spell knowledge specifically works for divine and arcane magic, so it wasn't future-proof.

That is an extremely liberal and abusive way to read it. I disagree that is how it functions, and I've used many of them for my spontaneous casters over the years. There's also no requirement to "hold" it. It quite clearly describes that the knowledge you gain from reading it imparts the spell known to you. That would be permanent. To then just "pass it on" breaks game design as I understand it.

If Woran wants to rule them working your way, tho, it doesn't bother me.

I don't think you're reading it right

It contains the knowledge of a single arcane or divine spell (chosen by the creator when the item is crafted). If the bearer is a spontaneous spellcaster and has that spell on her class spell list...

So it doesn't have to be in your hand (that would be wielded) but it has to be on you. It wouldn't work if you learned it and sold it, and there's no hint that it lights up and crumples to dust or adds to your spellbook permanently.

Sovereign Court

I don't think Paizo ever achieved consistency with "wield", "hold", "use", "carry" and "bear" in Pathfinder. All of them can be synonyms, or not, as the case may be. You need to look at the context to decipher what they mean in any particular situation.

In this case, I've always thought that since it's a page with writing that basically lets you do a sort of read-aloud spellbook improv act, that you'd need to have it in front of your face, not stuffed in a backpack.

Ascalaphus wrote:

Indeed.

It's why I'm also an outspoken opponent of "RAW" arguments. They completely skip over context, both to the detriment of the game and the benefit of the "RAW"er.

Ascalaphus wrote:

Extreme regional variation?

I've always thought that once it's read, the knowledge is imparted to the reader, and then akin to a scroll, its magic has been spent.

I look at it from a game design perspective, and try to figure out what makes most sense from a Developer. It doesn't make sense that someone who casts magic intuitively would be carrying around a scroll library.

It's also how I've always GMed them and how I've played them on some half a dozen organized play characters and nobody's ever suggested they work otherwise.

I'm open to being wrong, but I'd need some strong evidence in support of the idea.

M Large Canine Level 3 druid

What says, hints, implies, or suggests that the item is at all expended, or that you can benefit from it when not being the bearer of it?

Its only increased in power if you have 2 of the same kind of caster in the party.

Look at all of the questions about it. Everyone is either asking if they can use it to go off their spell list, or if you have to hold it to use it. Why would anyone care if if had to be held in the hand to be used if it was a one and done item that permanantly added something to your list?

M Large Canine Level 3 druid

and here's a post from the author talking about the item being passed from one caster to another. No word of "hey no thats not how it works the item disintegrates like a scroll"

Don't want to add more fuel to the fire, but since it's priced similarly to a Pearl of Power and the Spell Lattice (and half as much as the spontaneous variant I always blank on the name of), I'd say its use is also similar: A reusable item that lets you widen or reuse your spells or spell selection. If it crumbled to dust afterwards, it'd just be a very expensive scroll, and way disproportional to how a Wizard adds spells to his spells known.
The part about "holding" versus "wielding" and so in is incredibly vague, as Ascalaphus said, and I'm not getting into that.

Sovereign Court

Some trawling on the forums does turn up a lot of circumstantial evidence that the Page would work while it's in your backpack. Which is weeeeird for a piece of writing. Maybe the goblins are onto something after all.

Mostly people seem to be going nuts about the possibility of a sorcerer crafting it without knowing the spell in question by just brute-forcing the Spellcraft DC though. Never thought about that but it's kinda like writing a thesis. Or the sort of medieval awe reserved for books; it's not the information, it's the physical object that apparently has the power.

[retired]

Okay yeah after searching the Rules Forum I see this item is all messed up. I'm fine with whatever.
