Con season is upon us, and in just two months, I will be running the game room for CoastCon (Biloxi, MS - March 16-18 if anyone is interested). This does mean that for the next two months, my life is very hectic and gaming must take a back seat. I'm not dropping, just giving warning that my posting may be slightly curtailed (more than usual). If I'm holding things up, just go ahead and bot me if necessary, though I will try to check in at least every other day (except weekends, most of which I will be busy).
If you're in one of my games, I'm apologizing now for any unnecessary delays. Just hang in there and we will plug through.

If you guys would rather slog through the mud and blood of the front lines, feel free to speak up. I'm giving you different kinds of assignments to reflect your status as an elite unit, but I can certainly run a more down-to-earth campaign if you wish. Just thought you might get bored with trench warfare.

Aleksei Yarovich |

I am posting this in all my games. I will be out of country from May 18th to May 27th with limited Internet access. I will try to keep up where I can, but make no promises that I can't keep. Game on and bot as needed, please!

![]() |

I will be out of pocket this weekend (Friday through Sunday). I have a local convention and will be running PFS for much of it, so I will not be checking in. See everyone on Monday.

WhtKnt, this is only a minor annoyance, but the map in Roll20 doesn't *keep* the areas that I've seen lit (like the left and right corridors) showing once I move past them. Is there a switch you can set in Roll20 to keep all areas that we've seen once permanently showing?

![]() |

I wish that there was. What I can do is drop a light trail such that those areas remain lit. If that doesn't work, I'll switch to fog of war and turn off the VBL.

Sorry, been dealing with out of town relatives for the past three days. Hopefully, I'll be able to eke out some time tomorrow.

Just a note to let everyone know that I am in the direct path of Hurricane Gordon. This should be fairly routine (I've weathered many such storms), but in case we lose power or I am otherwise out for a few days, that's what has happened. If you are in my game, stand tight and I'll be back. If I am in yours, please bot me as necessary.

This is a brief message to let everyone know that I am going to be on vacation from Sunday, 23 September until 1 October. As many of you may be aware, my wife is 90% blind from glaucoma. She wanted to see Walt Disney World through the eyes of friends who have never been (or haven't been in many years) before she can't see at all. So I, she, and 9 of our friends are all going to Walt Disney World for a week!
During this time, my posting will be greatly curtailed, if not nonexistent. If you are in my game, I will continue upon my return, just sit tight. If I am in your game, please feel free to bot me as required.
During this week leading up to my vacation, I will be very busy and may be slowed, but I will try to get a post out before leaving for the week.

I've gotta say that my thoughts on this have...not taken the path I thought they would. (If that makes any sense.)
At first I had thought that I should not even try. After all, I've ghosted already, why take the chance again?
And then I thought that I wouldn't even want to. Having "taken a bite at the apple" and all that.
But, as I replied to all that had written me over my absence, I found that my keystrokes were just as quick, my clicks ever as probing, as curious, as energetic, as they ever were. It was like telling yourself you're not hungry...and then looking down at an empty plate and ordering more.
That is to say, yes. Yes I will be rejoining you. If you'll have me. =)
I may just need a few reminders on minor things like chase rules.
And shooting rolls.
And hit points. ^_^

![]() |

Speaking of chase rules, I have backed the new edition of Savage Worlds with a vengeance! I put up my $150 to get the boxed set, so when it arrives (should see the PDF about January or so), expect us to update to the new rules (though, according to everything I've seen, it should require minimal updating).

![]() |

There's a new edition of Savage Worlds???
Oooooooooooooooooooo.....
My first thought is 'why mess with perfection?"
My second thought is wondering at the big huge VAST amount of stuff out there for SW already. I mean, like, there's gotta be _twenty_ different settings out there, and each setting probably has a dozen modules out for it.
Well, I guess if they re-release most of it that'll mean lots of money for them, and who's to deny them that? =)
AS much as SW is the best RPG system, I do see how it can be tweaked, modified, condensed and improved upon, so let's see.
(Does that mean that we'll convert this game to the new rules?? I admit I'm curious....)

I've been following the teasers that PEG has been putting out for the last couple of months, and I must say that this is a major over-haul of the system, not just a few tweaks like they did going from Explorer's edition to the current Deluxe system. *Everything's* going to change, and it's going to be a learning curve to figure out how all the changes interact with each other. I'm actually kind of dreading it, seeing as all the years I've put into learning exactly how Deluxe works.

![]() |

Are we still looking for a way to work me in?
I'm fine with a "And SUDDENLY Dan pops out of a foxhole, guns a'blazin'" kind of thing.
Hey, I got no pride. =)
(srsly, all this guns-shooting is makin' mah trigger finger itchy.)

It has been a very busy week, much of which was spent with my parents whom I was visiting. I have a con this weekend, and I have some family business to take care of next week. I may be a few more days between posts, but don't worry. When I get everything straightened out, I'll be back on the action bandwagon. In the meantime, sit tight, or if I am in your game, please bot me as necessary.

Update: My wife's elderly aunt has been moved into a care facility. My wife and I are tasked with clearing out her room of all her belongings and finding a place to store them. We have about 10 days to do this, and we have our own affairs to worry about as well. To complicate things, she has lost several savings bonds and other important papers (like her will) in her room, so we can't just go in and bulldoze the place. We have to look for the papers as we pack. It's slow going and very tedious, so until we get the room vacated, my posting will be limited, but I will try to keep pace as much as possible.

![]() |

That said, did we get any Advances in the time I was gone? I'd hate to be the one holding the party back.
Edit: It's looks like I bowed out at 15XP, and we're at 22 now, yeah?
Anyone mind if I take Quick Draw as my 20XP Edge? =p

I just attended the Fathom event "They Shall Never Grow Old," a documentary about World War I by Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson. It combined restored (and some colorized) footage from the war with the voices of those who lived it and actual sounds from the war to give a perception of the war from the standpoint of a British soldier in the trenches.
It was a very moving and poignant film that emphasizes the sacrifices made in World War I (or any war) and is well-worth seeing for any history buff or anyone who, like myself, is a student of World War I. They drew from more than 100 hours of authentic footage and 200 hours of sound to make the film. A very fitting commemoration of the centennial of WWI.

Speaking of "isn't war odd", I recently heard of the Dickin Medal an award for animals. I thought this was a WWI thing, but apparently they were using animals a LOT in WWII. Go figure!
Mostly dogs and pigeons, but there is one cat of notable mention!

![]() |

WhtKnt, is this a good party size for you? Three feels fine to me, but if you wanted more, I'm sure we all know SW people we could invite.
I'm thinking specifically here of GM Niles. He's kind of rude. And crude. And a jag. But he's a solid poster and likes SW a lot.

All, I am in the midst of con season and I have two cons in the span of a month, one of which I am working as staff. If I am slowing things down, please feel free to bot me. If you are in my group, please be patient and I will check in as often as time allows. Things should be back to normal after the first weekend in March.

![]() |

Alright, let's huddle up.
We, all of us, can see the writing on the wall. As a favor to our good friend WhtKnt, we all concur that placing the game On Hold is the best thing right now. Maybe things will open up, but getting burned out and dropping ALL of one's games is all too common, so we hope that doing a little good now will prevent a lot of bad later.

Also, maybe we can all gather 'round and have a little pow-wow about what we thought about the game and maybe what can be different in the future?
1) Myself, I liked it. Had a good feel and it did well what it was trying to do. Taking over the castle was AWESOME. Never done that before and most like might never again. That was a fine, fine thing.
2) At the same time, I've never had a preference for "Low Magic" games, and this was no different. I never felt like there was something "better" to get to. We pretty much started with the weapons that we may very well have had right through Legendary level. Without magic (or, in the same vein, Sci Fi tech) Each fight and each level got us a little better at doing things, but, you can only ever get one raise on damage.
3) I didn't get where the "Weird" part of the Weird War was. We fought some skeletons once, but then nothing came of it. Also, one of us should've been a mage, much in the same way that in a Cuthulu game at least one person can cast spells just to maintain the atmosfear.
4) I think that this would've been a perfect canvass to try the Mass Battle rules of SW. WWI was all about mass battles so I kept expecting that. Moreso, we can even get double duty out of it, having our characters direct the battle, but also take part, directly affecting the outcome in multiple ways. (There are rules for that, we could've honed them to our preference.)

With that said, WhtKnt, instead of taking up this game again, I'd counsel for starting a SciFi SW game. For a point on how much fun the SF rules are I KEEP THE SF RULEBOOK ON MY KINDLE AS RECREATIONAL READING.
They're just so much fun. From Cyber to Walkers, the whole thing is nice. It's not constricting as Fantasy, and not as over-the-top as Rifts. There's a lot of support for it too, many modules to focus the creative fire.
Jus' sayin'. =)

ZenFox42 |

I liked everything about the game. The castle, the skeletons were great! So was the intrigue about the professor in the English museum (forgot his name). The setting was new to me, and different enough to be interesting. As far as advancing in "power", not having the setting book I don't know if it offers any ideas, but maybe we could stumble into some Weird Science gadgets in the future? After all, it is WEIRD War I, that would fit right in... :)
I felt like things were slowing down (inside the game, not the postings) in the archaeological dig, but that could have just been WhtKnt beginning to get burned out.
I'd be willing to pick this game up right where we left off if/when WhtKnt can change his workload in the future.

Aleksei Yarovich |

I've been enjoying the game, as I am a fan of the genre, but as I've mentioned before, I do the same as our intrepid gm and sometimes take on more than I have time for... that said, I'd be cool picking up where we left off if we come back to it, otherwise it's been an honor serving with you all.

![]() |

Well, I'll leave it open for now unless you guys would rather me mark it as inactive, freeing you up, and just send out PMs if we get back to it.
