At Bertholdt's suggestion, Arrika pulls a face. Maybe things are that bad on the battle lines, but I'm pretty sure we're not down to eating giant bugs yet. Wait...were we? Thinking back to some of the mystery meat stews she'd been served a few times...now she's not so sure.
As Sabrina gets eyes on the corridors ahead, Arrika begins searching the detritus of the abandoned campsite, looking for anything salvageable - or any clues as to who it may have belonged to.

The southwest tunnel works for me.

GM Toothy |

Elriel and Sabrina scout ahead the tunnel to the southwest, not noticing anything alarming. Meanwhile, looking at the junk, Arrika is able to find a torn bedroll, three candle stubs (you estimate each of them would burn for 30 minutes), a bent fishhook, 10 feet of badly frayed hemp rope and a copper brooch depicting a bat perched on a mushroom (both of the bat's eyes are tiny amethysts).

At Elriel's question, Horgus answers in a acid tone "I'd not make jokes about something that almost ate you... but indeed, once more, you were able to defeat a vermin! Perhaps once we get out of this damned place, IF we manage to do it, you all could form a exterminator team!"
Anevia shakes her head at the half-elf question. "I'm a volunteer at the Temple of Iomedae, helping with the preparations of bandages and meals, even if eventually the temple asks me to take scouting missions along the river... I have never heard about these caverns before..."
Aravashniel assumes a more regal posture before answering. "As I think I said before, I'm a Riftwarden and even if my knowledge is vast, I have no idea how to help in this matter... I know there are caverns and tunnels under Kenabres, the nature of those ranging from simple sewers to old catacombs and even caverns skirting the upper edges of the Darklands realm of Nar-Voth but there are no maps about them and even if there were, I'd not be able to guide you in face of my current condition..."
Horgus spits on the ground before answering. "I'm an aristocrat and for sure I have no dealings with this business!"
_______________________________
As you follow the southwest tunnel, you end up in a similar cavern, even with a slight ledge down the west. It is easy to assume that the tunnel leading to the west is, probably, connected to the vast cavern you woke up early.
A stone ledge juts out at a right angle on the south wall of this cavern, fourteen feet off the ground. The leather strap of a backpack hangs from the edge of the ledge, while above, a narrow fissure yawns up into the dark. From that ledge, blood drips into the floor, making the rock surface slippery.

Elriel |

Having no skill at appraising gemstones, the half-elf whistles low, "They sure look pretty, don't they? I bet they're worth a few gold at least."
later
Elriel sheathes his blades and prepares for the climb. He turns to his companions, "Watch my back while I get up there. Yell if there is any danger."
But the half-elf slipped up and landed on his ass. He glared at Horgus daring him to say something...
___________

How many times can we try? Any damage or potential damage?

GM Toothy |

You may try any number of times, taking 1d6 nonlethal damage on a failed check of 5 or more. It is possible for two persons to use Aid Another on a third one.

Regarding the brooch Sabrina takes a look at it, she seemed less concerned about its value but rather if it had any meaning.

Elriel |

nonlethal damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
The fall jolted Elriel to the realization that this was not an easy climb after all. Not like the trees back in the Tanglebriar.
He thanked Sabrina but soon figured that she wasn't helping much.
He turned to the others, "Someone come here. Place your hands this way so I can get a boost and grab that stone sticking out there..."
waiting for someone to help out...

Sabrina tried, but she is in worse shape that you to help. damn -5 ACP

Elriel |

The half-elf claps his hands to remove the dust from the floor. He limps a little on his right leg but soon shakes that off and is ready to try again.
But the hold on the stones crumbles under his fingers and he falls right back down again.
This time, his hip slams hard on the rocky floor.
Elriel just lifts his hands, "Maybe we should let this go and continue to look for a way out. I need to stay whole to fight off potential monsters."
He looks at the leather strap of a backpack hanging from the edge of the ledge, "Can we reach for it? I mean it's only 14 feet off the floor; any long weapons anywhere?"

GM Toothy |

I'll move things along since there is no sense to loose too much time around here.
"And there he goes again! Let's see, let's see... yes! And once more he falls, and the best part, he lands on his ass!" Horgus laughs hard at Elriel's attempt to climb the rock wall. You clearly see that he is trying to make the others laugh as well, even if with little success.
"That is enough Horgus..." The elf cuts shortly.
Anevia sighs before giving a suggestion. "Perhaps you need not a grappling hook... any of you have a dagger? If so, we can just tie it to the rope and try to hook it..."
Arrika offers her dagger and after also taking Sabrina's rope, Anevia ties the dagger before throwing it towards the lost backpack.

Attack (touch), improvised weapon: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 5 - 4 = 13
She tries two times but on both of them he missed the target. Clearly she is having difficulties because of her broken leg that steals part of her balance. She spins the rope once more before trying again. "Third time is the charm, right?" This time she is successful and is able to hook the backpack, dislodging it. Bertholdt, still near the wall, is able to catch the backpack before it hits the ground.
"Looks like you have some skills with a rope and a 'grappling hook'... I can only imagine how you spend your nights, girl..." Horgus talks once more. Anevia remains silent but is livid with anger.
The backpack is covered in blood in the top, like if someone, or something, bled profusely on top of it. It is of a remarkable quality, bearing the symbol of the Eagle Watch (masterwork quality) and contains 10 days of trail rations, a flint and steel, a set of caltrops, two flasks of oil, a bundle of 12 arrows, a potion of cure light wounds, and a potion of lesser restoration (the potions are labeled in a military fashion).

Elriel |

Elriel smiles at the find, "That's what I'm talking about. Good job Anevia."
He pulls out the potions and passes them in front of Horgus. He even smells at the trail rations, "Ah food for everyone. Well, not everyone. Horgus, you can have some of big cockroaches because you're not eating our rations. Not until you decide to behave."
He scoffs, "Besides, it looks like you could lose a little weight."
"Everybody ready? I think our way out is to the east."

![]() |

Sabrina smirks at Elriel's suggestion, but despite Horgus' foul temper Sabrina splits her rations with him anyway. Despite your attitude, Iomedae has seen fit to spare you from Pharasma's judgement. If only to test our patience. Eat, can't have you in a weakened state. despite your attitude you are needed.

GM Toothy |

Since Arrika is 'out', I'll move this along!
You can see Horgus was already preparing another mean comment to the half-elf and Sabrina's demand but he decided to remain silent when he received a share of the rations.

After another small ledge, the tunnel to the east opens of in another cavern, once more of a similar size than the two previous ones. Several mounds of rock lie in heaps in this cavern, recently fallen from the walls and ceiling. Now and then, bits of dust settle from cracks in the stone above. Different from the other caverns though is the damage this one suffered from the attack on Kenabres above, even if it feels save to cross. The tunnel continues east, at the opposite side of the cavern.

Elrial, I need another Fort Save DC 13 to avoid taking another Con Damage: 1d2 ⇒ 2. With Bertholdt's heal check, you receive a +4 bonus to your roll. If you fail again, please roll another 4 saves or until you succeed.
The tunnel continues to the east. You find many more ledges, small rocks scattered around the ground and even footprints in the dusty floor made by an assortment of creatures, from small humanoid ones to hooved feet. More then once you find other tunnels leading downward into the darkness but, as Aravashnial insisted to remember every time, your way is upwards and who knows the dangers you might face if another route is taken...
After about an hour you find yourselves in a junction. You have not covered a big distance but having to walk with poor visibility, in a rough ground and having someone limping surely delayed you. To the north, a 5-foot wide opening in the wall leads into a cave filled with soft but nasty-looking green light. The tunnel continues to the south.
From where you are at the junction, you are able to see that a single sizable 20-foot-tall building remains in the center of this 30-foot-high cave, a bunkerlike structure with no windows and walls of worked stone blocks. A 10-foot-long carving of a hammer decorates the building's facade. The ruins of collapsed outbuildings stand to either side.
Sabrina, you forgot to add the -1 for being wounded on your roll. It made no difference but try not to forget in the next time, ok?

Through the encounter with the viper, Arrika had stayed with Horgus, Anevia, and Aravashnial, seeing that the others had it well in hand. As they went on, she continued helping as best she could, guiding Aravashnial away from a couple of larger outcroppings on the walls and taking a turn supporting Anevia when the others grew tired. Kelumarion continued to act as a rear guard, glancing backward every several seconds with his ears constantly turned behind to listen for any surprises.
Knowledge (religion) untrained: 1d20 ⇒ 17
The building fascinates Arrika; what sort of building was built this far underground? Examining the stonework and the giant hammer on the building's façade, it suddenly strikes her. Dwarves! She'd seen the symbol worn by more than one dwarf come to join the crusaders, and while she didn't know much about their strange gods, she knew the hammer was symbolic of one of them.
From the building, her gaze travels back to the strange tunnel. I don't know if I like the looks of that light from in there... Approaching cautiously, Kelumarion peers carefully in with a soft growl, trying to see the source of the strange greenish light.

"Lots of insects around here, right?" Anevia breaks the silence while she guides Aravashnial into the cavern and rests her leg while she sits atop a flat stone.
"This is indeed and unusual fact but also not too surprisingly... Deskari is after all the Lord of the Locust Host... now that Kenabres has fallen it makes sense." The elf answers with a little tone of sorrow in his commanding voice.

Strength Check (Bertholdt): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
On his first try, Bertholdt wasn't able to open the old door, even with Sabrina's help. He took some space and momentum before trying again and, this time, the old stone door could not withstand his strength, opening to a dark room. After some light is brought, you can see that a stone bench lines the southern wall of this chamber. At the far side of the room, a basin of water sits atop a stone pedestal. A stone door engraved with an image of a hammer stands to the north.
Once more, as soon as the door is open the soft green light disappears. From under the door to the north you can, once more, see the faint green glow. There are two doses of holy water in the water basin (no flask though).
Seeing the stone bench, Anevia talks to you, moving towards it. "My leg is hurting really bad... let me rest in the bench for a little bit..."
Horgus sighed. "Sure rest a bit... and I thought that we could not get any slower. Perhaps we can find a cozy bed inside this temple for you while we try to find an exit... it would be better for everyone." Once more the poison and the acid tone.
Her face filled with anger, Anevia explodes. "I'm not surprised that someone so afraid to show his own faith would not be moved by a forgotten temple like this... and know what? Being ashamed of your own faith is as bad as worship those damned demons!"
Horgus is taken aback by Anevia's outburst but soon finds his tongue. "Oh the irony... I, a noble from Kenabres, being chided by someone who has been known to consort with thieves!" He laughs falsely.
Anevia falls into black, silent anger at this, her eyes narrowing as she tries to resist escalating the argument.

Arrika stared at the interior of the temple in wonder as she helped Anevia and Aravashnial inside. The grandeur of it was astonishing, even in its current abandoned state. Walking over to the basin, she peers inside at the water. A holy font, maybe? Do we have some way to keep -
Then, suddenly, there's a spike of concern at the back of her mind. Turning around, she sees Anevia sit down heavily on the bench, and hears Kelumarion speaking through their mystical bond. Her pain is not merely physical. There is a heaviness of spirit inside her as well... At his prompting, Arrika goes to sit next to the injured woman, resting a hand on her back to try and comfort her as Kelumarion butts his head gently against her good knee. What is it? she begins in a whisper - and then Horgus opens his mouth. Anevia manages to hold her tongue after a few moments, but Arrika's patience is worn thin.
What's your problem, anyway?! She had a boulder land on her leg! If it'd been you hurt we'd still be back in that cavern, the way you've been whining the entire time! Spirits of all, you're worse than Elia and Marcus back home, and they're five! Just cool it - this bickering doesn't do us any good! With a deep breath, she calms herself...slightly. Why not a bucket instead, or a frying pan?" But then he adds: "I guess you could ask the same question of me... Why me and not a pair of boots..?"
After a pause, he looks to the front: "Nice place... Someone was saying it might be some kind of temple. I'd believe it. It's serene. Beautiful..."

Elriel finds no traps or anything dangerous about the door and, differently from the outer door, this one, despite old, isn't stuck. As soon as he opens it the faint green light vanishes completely. Broken stone benches line this narrow room. The air is cold and stale, and thick layers of dust cover the floor, benches, and a large altar at the far end of the room.
Seated on one of the benches facing the altar, his back turned to you, is a stocky hooded figure, probably a dwarf. In a whispered voice he prays to Torag. Once he notices your presence, he gestures for you to sit along him, without interrupting his prayers or turning to face you.
Result of 17 or greater: Huecuvas are resistant to any wounds with the exception of those inflicted by magic or silver and have an aura of faithfulness that makes him more resistant against channeled or positive energies.

Arrika - Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 14 Ah, damn. One point off.
Arrika - Knowledge (religion) - untrained: 1d20 ⇒ 17
Arrika - Will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
A curious place to sit at prayers - but it is a stunning cathedral. Arrika looks to Kelumarion. Should I join him in his prayers? He seems...peaceful... Quietly, she begins to move forward.
Kelumarion - Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Kelumarion - Knowledge (religion) - untrained: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (5) - 2 = 3
Kelumarion - Will save: 1d20 ⇒ 19
But at the last moment, she hears a low growl. Stay back! I know not what it is, but no true creature would be so blanketed in dust...look!
I forget, do you get a re-attempt on saves when someone points out an inconsistency?

Elriel's suspicions are confirmed by the cat's low growl. "He-it... it's right. That's no priest. Not one who would blaspheme the god to whom this temple is dedicated to."
He takes out his second blade, "Show yourself, creature!"

Yup, you actually do get another saving throw and a +4 bonus on top of it! Normally anyone can only attempt a Will Save to disbelief an illusion once you 'interact' with it but the 'interact' term is a bit vague... so since you are all obviously paying attention to it, I decided to assume you were all interacting with it.

wow that was close but Sabrina is -2 vs mind effecting and distraction effects
knowledge religion is untrained so no DC above 10 for Sabrina
Taking a cue from Elriel as well as confirming her own suspicions, Sabrina draws her blade as well taking a stance beside Elriel.
She then focuses her gaze on the supposed priest, searching for its aura.
detect evil on the dust priest
I remembered the -1 for the grazed effect this time

Arrika Will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Sad trombone noises. But I'll play to it. :)
Arrika throws herself between Elriel, Kelumarion, and the dwarf, speaking in a harsh whisper. What are you talking about? Leave the poor man in peace - he's just here to pray. Would you wanted to be interrupted at swordpoint in your prayers? To illustrate her point, she walks forward, despite the warning growl that rips from Kelumarion's throat. He tries to rush forward and stop her, but just slightly too slowly - she kneels next to the figure, bowing her head respectfully toward the altar.

Arrika, don't forget the +4 for making the knowledge and perception checks and the +4 for having the info pointed out giving you an adjusted 13.
