Grim misses his swipe at the moving kobold, but manages to jump away from the pit! Placed you on the west side of the pit. You still have an action and if you end your turn adjacent to the pit, you have to make another Reflex to keep from falling in.
Antonella misses with her swipe at the moving kobold as well! Reflex?
Hagrym moves up and stabs the kobold! Need a Reflex to keep from falling in the pit.
Chochok blasts the caster kobold!
Nivik pelts the kobold with a missile of force!

The entangled kobold struggles to break free, but is still unable to break free.

Antonella Schiavo |
How is a kobold spell-caster causing us this much trouble?
“This time, brothers and sister!”
Antonella delays until after Grim, giving the warpriest the opportunity to enter channelling range if he wants to.

Unless he dies to that charge, then I'll move around to hit the one in the web.
GM Tektite |
Chochok fires his musket, blasting the caster, but it still stands, barely!
@Grim: You would have to jump to nearest open space, which would be to your east.
Grim manages to jump away from the yawing chasm, but is now on the wrong side!
Hagrym begins moving closer!
Nivik and Sifvery pelt the cast with projectiles, taking it down!
With the caster dealt with, the party easily deals with the entangled kobold!
Out of Combat!
At the defeat the kobolds, the hooting and shrieking subsides, and the ruins below grow relatively calm. The liberated laborers are grateful and wish to leave the valley as soon as possible. They also warn you that hundreds more kobolds inhabit the area; it’s only a matter of time before the others discover what has occurred and call upon their hellish dragon god for aid.
Searching the area, you find a handy haversack bearing the Glyph of the-Open Road—the insignia of the Pathfinder Society—leans against the defaced altar; it is the only trace of Venture-Captain Nieford Sharrowsmith. Within are spoiled rations, an elixir of vision, a dose of stone salve and one of his field notebooks.
My initial hypothesis is that this guardian was a sacred destroyer and may even be responsible for Ashkurhall’s eventual abandonment. The original occupants of this site put great stock in a curious orb that the carvings suggest shoots beams of light—likely someone in the Grand Lodge better versed in dwarven art could clarify the point—and causes the guardian beast discomfort and forces it to bow to their will (or writhe in pain... cursed erosion). The carving ends with a dwarf delivering this orb to an amphibian people called Krihirik, and the lack of more recent inscriptions suggests this may have been one of the
society’s final acts.
I recognize the name Krihirik from my voyage south through the Mwangi Expanse. No doubt old Sylien could help me track it down, but I would rather not impose on him again. This orb seems important for anyone exploring these ruins, and I shall set off for it after completing my survey of a few more structures here.
Once your done exploring, you escort the miners back to Fort Bandu...
Striking a blow against the kobolds demonstrates Fort Bandu’s ability to defend its territory and reduces the likelihood of future kobold raids. Praetor Sylien is pleased with the results of the party's mission—even more as you successfully rescued many of the miners.
For the Pathfinders, though, the victory is incomplete without having found Venture-Captain Nieford Sharrowsmith, whose journal entries confirm he had explored part of Ashkurhall before implying he traveled to the Mwangi Expanse to find the Krihirik. Sylien is amenable to helping the party further, and he recognizes that the Krihirik are a tribe of grippli that live in the Kaava Lands just northwest of the Bandu Hills. He further shares that a member of the tribe visits several times a year to barter for good and gems, who left only a yesterday morning. What’s more, Amersanus Valacosti abruptly wrapped up his business at the fort and departed in the same direction only a few hours later.
If the party is to find the Krihirik and recover the relic with the power to neutralize the Golden Guardian— especially if they want to get there ahead of the Aspis Consortium—the party must make haste for the Kaava Lands!
An that concludes part one on Scions of the Sky Key. Chronicles will be PM'd to you shortly! If you haven't rolled you Day Job or posted your PFS number in Dicussion, please do so! (Glances at Grim and Nivik) Hope you enjoyed it!
Chochok Tree Whisper |
"Well, I reckon we need to get a move on then." Chochok says as he shoulders his musket. "Them Aspis'll be on the move, so we best be hittin' the ol' dusty trail, ayup."
"Goin' t'see my people." Chochok comments. "Not too many grippli around, it'll be nice to be back in green company."
GM Tektite |
The journey from Fort Bandu to the Kaava Lands is oppressively hot, but it gets easier as the days go on and the terrain transitions from rugged foothills to open grasslands before giving way to dense jungle. Following the directions from Fort Bandu’s garrison captain, it is not difficult to find Krihirik village, which lies approximately ten miles inside the jungle’s border— and twenty feet off the ground.
Narrow rope bridges connect a few dozen tree-dwellings overhead, forming a small but secure community. Bright-skinned, bulging-eyed gripplis go about their daily business nearby. Crates and sacks of trade goods litter the jungle floor, and several gripplis busily inspect a bundle ofswords, throwing down their spears and nets in favor of freshly forged steel. A blue-and-brown-skinned grippli in practical traveling clothes bounds forward and holds out his webbed hands in welcome.
“More visitors come to trade with the Krihirik? You are most welcome here, though I fear we have little to offer at this time. Or perhaps there’s some other reason you came all this way?” Seeing Chochok, he bows. "Greetings brother! We do not see members from other tribes very often! Which tribe do you hail from?"
Chochok Tree Whisper |
Oh boy. Me? The face?
Chochok tips the brim of his Stetson at the fellow grippli. "Howdy. I don't claim any tribe as my own except the land b'neath my feet and my current companions here. We're from the tribe o' Pathfinders, you might say. Ayup."
Chochok hikes up his belt and asks, "Now, would you happen to know anything artifacts? Powerful artifacts? We were havin' trouble with some kobolds up t'the north. Something t'do with the dwarves, I think."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3
Antonella Schiavo |
“You must excuse our friend, Speaker for the Krihirik. He may as well be called ‘Dirty Chochok’ – not because his motives are impure.” The paladin pauses to smile and shake her head.
“Oh no. It is because our tribe’s leadership council, called ‘The Ten’ – give him every dirty job that comes along. Tasks that he performs admirably and ethically. Though, the skills that make one ideal for such tasks, and the impact undertaking them has on one’s soul may not make them as suited for polite company.”
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
“This one is known as Antonella, aspiring champion and emissary of Mastery without Form. The Tree Whisper you have already met. May I also introduce Hagrym, the Iron Lord's enforcer, Grim Krieger one of the General of Vengeance’s legionnaires, Master Nivik Klist (who does his best work with his mouth closed) and Lady Sifvery Moon, whose slight form conceals the Spirit and Heart of the Kaava Lands!”
Antonella’s expression is regretful. “Alas, our quest is more of mercy than mercantile. We seek a lost brother, one Nieford Sharrowsmith – called Venture-Captain. A chieftain of our tribe. His journey was one of knowledge and discovery in relation to a dwarven ruin, though we believe he is hunted by our enemies, those bearing the mark of the Asp!”
“We believe the dwarves …” Antonella searches for the right word. “controlled a mighty golden being – guardian or threat or both – using an orb that fell from the heavens. An orb the bearded folk delivered to your tribe sometime in the past, after their civilisation fell. An orb our enemies seek for selfish purposes that will not benefit the Mwangi or its people. An orb that may have drawn our Venture-Captain into your sphere of influence.”
Antonella shakes her head ruefully. “Although we have no goods to barter for information. Perhaps there is some service we could do for the Krihirik people to earn your trust and cooperation in these matters.” The priestess clasps her hands together and makes a deep bow.
Hagrym PFS |
She's good, Hagrym smiles as he listened to the charming words of Antonella. He didn't know much about grippli, but he had little doubt they would be swayed by her tone and mannerisms, no matter their customs.
GM Tektite |
The grippli listens and nods amicably, but perks up at Antonella's mention of the golden being. "You come meet elders, yes? Follow me, I will take you to see the Krihirik elders!" He sends several gripplis to lower a tall ladder from the trees to the jungle floor. Rickety rope bridges connect half a dozen grippli tree houses to one another, though to the north, many more appear overgrown and abandoned. One dwelling is larger than the others, hangs over a small pond. Inside, three gripplis with mottled gray-brown skin pass a finely crafted short sword back and forth with admiration. Gwellik announces the party to the grippli elders, and introduces them to the party: Mother Bogwynne, the lorekeeper and chief elder; Finyik, the hunt-master; and Diblop, the chief brew-mistress and miracle worker.
Mother Bogwynne, the largest of the gripplis, slowly gets to her feet and hands the sword to the trader. “Thank you Gwellik. You have done well in our time of need, bringing both weapons and travelers from afar to lend aid to the Krihirik.” She pauses and looks over her guests in the meetinghouse. “So, you seek a weapon to fight against the guardian of the Bandu Hills? Word of our tribe’s secret seems to have reached many ears of late. The Krihirik have such an object, but it is a treasured possession, entrusted to us long ago—one we could not surrender lightly. However...” She looks to Finyik, the hunt-master, whose old bones creak as he gets to his feet to speak.
“We are fewer in number with each season, for we are hemmed in by enemies on all sides. Those who would seek our remaining weapon would do well to bring us one in return, and this is the same opportunity we gave to those who came before you. Travel to Deepblood Ridge, where two beasts of the Kaava Lands reign, and bring back one or more of their eggs. These we can nurture as our own, far from the hungry talons of the lizardfolk who fear the beasts and would eat their young. Do this while surviving the dangers of our forest home, and you shall have our gratitude and our respect.”
Finyik sits down, and Diblop, by far the oldest and grayest of the three, speaks. “The great scaled ones are mighty creatures, the king and queen of the Kaava Lands’ many beasts. But the lizardfolk—may curses haunt their breed to the ends of the jungle—chased them off, leaving the nest vulnerable. Now is the time to strike! Those who can defy the lizardfolk and aid us now will be most fit to wield the weapon the dwarves gave us so long ago and end the vile guardian’s threat once and for all.”
Antonella Schiavo |
If I’ve got this right, the Grippli elders want eggs from some great beast and her mate, so they can raise the young as their own watch-pets to guard against their enemies – the lizardfolk.
Antonella thinks it over. Fair enough. Diplomacy roll from before was 26.
The priestess bows deeply and addresses each elder in the order that they spoke to the Pathfinders. “Mother, greetings. We Pathfinders would be delighted to perform a service that strengthens your tribe. It is a wise, benevolent leader who has the continued well-being of her people at the forefront of her mind.”
“Could we please be given directions or a map to the beasts’ nest in Deepblood Ridge. How long is it before the parents are likely to return? How far away are the Lizard-folk marauders from that region?”
“Huntmaster Finyik, may your enemies without the sense to flee, continue to fall before your might! You mentioned you gave this same opportunity to others that came before us. These others … was it one party or more? Was the spokesman for any of the groups called ‘Sharrowsmith’ by chance? He may have born this symbol." Antonella shows the elders the glyph of the Open Road on her wayfinder.
"Did any of the groups wear a badge of precious metal, or call themselves ‘Aspis’ or ‘Consortium’ agents?”
Antonella gives a description of the Aspis expeditionary force bound for the region that her team uncovered in Bloodcove, before inquiring about the presence of “A long, lanky Garundi streak of misery. His speech was likely self-important and he may have offered deals that sounded too good to be true. Amersanus Valacosti is his name, leader of the serpent tribe.”
The priestess then bows to the tribe’s holy woman. “High Brew-mistress, I too am an ambassador of my god, Irori who urges me to master myself as the first step on the long journey to enlightenment. Will you please explain some aspects of your own faith to alleviate this one’s ignorance? Many bearded folk such as my friend Hagrym revere brewed beverages. Have you seen or heard stories of the golden guardian of the Bandu Hills? Is it bird or dragon-kin? A natural creature of the Expanse or is it otherworldly?”
Chochok Tree Whisper |
Chochok shows deference to the grippli elders but lets Antonella do the speaking as she seems to have a better handle on such things than he does, even among his own kind. I always was a bit of a loner, ayup.
Chochok nods in agreement with Nivik. "Best be hittin' the ol' dusty trail if we mean to be catchin' up with 'em, that's for sure."
GM Tektite |
The grippli(s)' eyes get a glazed look as Antonella begins speaking, but it is hard to tell whether it is just the natural expression of their eyes or something else. Mother Bogwynne sits back down and endeavors to answer the questions.
“They are a small group of explorers Gwellik brought back from a recent trade expedition. They seemed eager to help us with our problem. They did not carries devices such as you, but one or two did have badges as descibe."
Turning to Hagrym, she says. “Your kind calls them dinosaurs. They are the mightiest creatures for miles in any direction, dangerous and untamable. The lizardfolk must have suffered great losses in chasing them off.”
Finyik gives the party directions to the nest and encourages you to set out as soon as possible, for the other explorers already have a head start.
GM Tektite |
Leaving the grippli village, the party heads into the jungle, following the directions of Finyik. The Kaava Lands teem with wildlife, from squawking birds and stinging insects to humongous trees that create a dense canopy above. Vines, roots, and large-leaved plants cover much of the ground. The gripplis’ directions lead northwest through the dark, virtually trackless terrain. The myriad sounds of the jungle grow louder, and the undergrowth grows thicker, as the Krihirik village vanishes into the distance.
Survival checks to navigate the jungle.
