"Well," starts Laboni, hesitantly, "well, thank you for helping out! I don't know what got into me, I guess I got a little carried away!"

Laboni is a human woman in her late teens, and seems quite relieved that you are here to help.

"I have a racer ready to go, but I fear it is not up to the standards of the other racers. It is pretty basic right now..."

Speed 40 ft., full 400 ft.

Modifiers +2 Piloting, –3 attack

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Remote Control Laboni’s junkracer and weaponry can be remotely controlled by the PCs, allowing them to make attack rolls and attempt Piloting checks in her place.

PCs can make the following upgrades to her junkracer with a successful Computers, Engineering, Perception, or Physical Science check:
• The vehicle’s base speed increases by 5 feet.
• The vehicle gains a +1 Piloting modifier.
• The vehicle gains a +1 attack modifier.
• The vehicle gains a +2 bonus to its EAC.
• The vehicle gains a +2 bonus to its KAC.
• The PCs install a basic energy weapon on the vehicle (imposes a
–4 base Piloting penalty on a hit).
• The PCs install a basic kinetic weapon on the vehicle (imposes a
–4 base Piloting penalty on a hit).
• The PCs upgrade a weapon to impose an additional –2 penalty to
enemy Piloting checks on a successful hit.

You can also investigate the "enemies" with Sense Motive or Engineering checks.

You can attempt to sabotage the enemies with stealth followed by engineering.

You can socialize with the enemies by talking to them.

Enemies:
Lemgem (female feychild gnome)
Nyizin (female ryphorian)
Orsis (make damaya lashunta)
Ratrod (male ysoki)

Looking over Laboni's vehicle, Aegis-9 notes to himself, She would likely get a quicker response from the gyro-stabilizer with by wiring it to an optic sensor with a self-adjusting subroutine. That would allow this vehicle to go a little bit faster, I'd think.

He draws a small diagram on a nearby computer pad and hands it to Laboni.

Hearing Steev's inquiry, the android adds, "Your enthusiasm is infectious, friend. But, I think we may get a better handle on this race by checking out the competition. Perhaps, Raia and I should go speak with some of the other racers, while the rest of you work on improving the racer's performance."

Turning to Raia, he asks, "Do you think we should approach them together, or divide and conquer?"

You should definitely spend an action and try to improve with your highest mod, even if that is 0. You would otherwise waste an action! So you could for instance try to all the time improve the speed by 5 feet. Just roll your d20 ten times and the GM can use that as your rolls. And then you can always on top use your Sense Motive to find out things with a roll each round. ;-)

Lemgem is a blue-haired gnome covered in piercings, tattoos, and augmentations. A short conversation reveals she is obsessed with continual alterations to herself and her racer, to the point where her vehicle modifications skirt the bounds of common sense.

Aegis 9 is able to modify a faulty subroutine to get a little more speed out of the junkracer.

Aegis-9 changes his mind, and tries to patch the operating system of Velocity's racer, but is not able to succeed. Velocity seems disappointed, but they don't really say anything.

Then, Fixit comes in, and monkeys around in the engine, and clears out a blocked intake manifold, getting a little more speed out of the engine. They say, "Thank you, friend. I am looking forward to trying out this new enhancement. You have my alliance for this race... I will at best try to come in second to you, and will aim my weapons at anyone ahead of your racer." They give a pleasant smile, and go back to their planning.

Raia installs a new energy weapon, which she thinks will help in the race.

Patterson attempts to improve the energy defense of the racer, but fails to find the wire netting he was looking for.

Steev approaches Orsis, who sees him coming. The lashunta makes mental contact with him, which he is unable to prevent. "How may I help you?" he asks.

Steev will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

"Help? Not so much." says Osris. "I plan to beat him myself. Now, please leave me alone... I have much work to do!"

And that is all the time that you have!
I will be setting up the race today or tomorrow, as it will take a little work.

Steev' shrugs. "Good luck!" He heads back to the racer and his teammates.

See slide #4 to see each of the racers, and the stats on yours.
See slide #5 for our progress. Please, I will move the tokens on this one, just to make sure it all goes well.

Race rules!
Actions for the race happen simultaneously, so there will be no initiatives, etc. Each player can make no more than one action per turn, and each weapon may only be fired once. One person will need to

Phase One: All racers may fire their weapons by rolling a ranged attack roll against their target competitor’s vehicle EAC (for energy weapons) or KAC (for kinetic weapons), with a bonus or penalty equal to the vehicle’s attack modifier. Each weapon can be fired only once per round. Successful weapon attacks impose Piloting penalties (usually – 4, unless the weapon was upgraded using one of the PCs’ prerace actions) that last for the rest of the turn.

Phase Two: Once all the weapons have been fired and the relevant Piloting penalties have been applied to each driver, each racer must attempt a Piloting check, modified by the vehicle’s Piloting bonus. Success means the vehicle moves at its full speed along the track (for the purposes of this race, assume a junkracer’s full speed is equal to the vehicle’s speed × 10). Failure causes the vehicle to crash into piles of junk on the sidelines, forcing it to move at half speed (the vehicle’s speed × 5) on the circuit; failure by more than 10 points causes the vehicle to get stuck and not move at all for that round.

The Track: The racing circuit is 3,000 feet long, and whoever crosses the finish line first is the winner. If multiple vehicles cross the finish line on the same round, whoever is farther across is the winner; if multiple vehicles tie for this distance, the race is a tie.

GM Note: I will call for actions each round. Those of you shooting will need to state which weapon you are using, who your target is, and make your attack roll. If you are piloting, make your piloting check (modified by the vehicle's bonus prior to weapons fire). I will then recap what happens.

As the call for the race goes out, Laboni takes her place at the wheel of her racer, though she makes sure that the team's remote controls are in place. The team can now see all of the racers.

Ratrod has a very impressive looking racer. It combines speed with a single powerful energy weapon.

Nyzin has a very bulky looking racer. However, looks fast, with a single energy weapon, and good kinetic defences.

Velocity has a very sleek looking racer. It looks like they have sacrificed firepower for speed.

LemGem has a very well armed racer, having both an energy and kinetic weapon.

Orsis has an almost spherical racer, with good defenses and a single weapon.

Racers! Start your engines! On your mark, get set, go!!!"

Skills:

"It would appear to me that Patterson is the most skilled at piloting among us." Aegis-9 notes. "And the rest of you also appear to be more skilled at marksmanship than I. Therefore, I will assume control of one of the energy weapons."

As the race begins, the android turns the energy weapon on Orsis' racer. "It is unfortunate that we could not be allies, Orsis." Aegis-9 says, though it is doubtful that his target can hear him. "Although I wish you luck, I have a job to do." With the weapon turned on the spherical racer, Aegis-9 fires.

Ranged attack (energy weapon) v. Orsis' racer's EAC: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 - 2 = 20

Aegis-9's shot fires true! An excellent start to the race!
