GM ShadowLord |
Gaeldrung and Lukaas pound on the vent until it finally goes flying off and lands on the ground in the next room with a loud CLANG.
This room is large and square. The walls glow with a gentle blue light, and the air feels unnaturally cool and dry. Shelves line the walls and stand in ranks through the middle of the room, punctuated by a wooden table and ornate chairs. An imposing, unoccupied desk faces the main entrance to the room. On an easel in one of the aisles is a map of the room.
Map Updated. I switched to Google Dogs because its easier on me than the other method.
Lukaas Penn |
whispers to Gaeldrung and points the chair
Beware, this chair is under a spell... I don't know what kind of magic yet.Your axe will be most welcome: a preemptive strike maybe? But be as silent as possible, we don't know who can hear us...
Then, into the vent
Be quick, people!
What kind of magic is used on the chair?
Eldak Moonshadow |
"Lukaas let me have a look at that."
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
Hopefully that does it
GM ShadowLord |
Gaeldrung looks around and notices that in the northern area of the room (away from the table action) there is an easel that looks interesting. Walking up to he glances at the document on it and finds it is a legend of the different shelves and cabinets in the room. Picture here
Eldak Moonshadow |
Eldak looks over the picture found by Gaeldrung and approaches the bookshelf labeled Counter Intelligence. He scans the shelves to see if he can find anything of importance.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

White_Eagle |
White Eagle makes his way into the room. being careful to avoid the magic chair.
he browses the room, taking note where others are searching and eventually stops at Internal security receipts. he starts to take a look at these documents.
perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28
GM ShadowLord |
Pollet stayed behind back at the other end of the vent, guarding your rear so to speak.
The party splits up and begins to rummage through the various material. Lukaas starts to see promising information in his area that could be what they are looking for, but his search is interrupted.
White Eagle keeps his eyes on the chair, wary of it as he walks past it. But once he begins searching the material in earnest something unexpected happens. The chair lunges at his back, smashing viciously into the Shoanti and successfully pulls the shaman into its seat as the arms beginning to tighten and constrict around him. 12 Damage to White Eagle, he's grappled by the chair and having the life squeezed out of him.
Initiative: Chair - Party (Lukaas, Zhoron, Eldak, White Eagle, Gaeldrung)
Party is up! Map has been updated.
???: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Lukaas: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Zhoron: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Eldak: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
White Eagle: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Gaeldrung: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Lukaas Penn |
Well, I didn't knew what to expect with this magical chair... I wasn't expecting that! Hope we'll got more lucky against the chair than we've been against the imp! Gaeldrung, could you make us some quick chopped wood for this winter?
Not waiting to hurt White Eagle, Lukass thinks about magical chairs, trying to remember any weakness, while he prepares a bolt on his crossbow
Know Arcana?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
But his brain is helpless
I suppose we got a -4 to hit with ranged weapons for "firing into melee", as White Eagle is grappled?
Gaeldrung |
Gladly! Gaeldrung bellows. His ax comes down off his back and he stalks over to the chair. The ax arcs up, then down in a tremendous overhead chop.
attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
damage: 1d12 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Eldak Moonshadow |
"Be careful, we don't want to damage White Eagle in the process." Eldak approaches the chair carefully and takes a swing at it with his staff.
Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Lukaas Penn |
crossbow bolt: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 2 - 4 = 15
dmg: 1d8 ⇒ 1
We'll do our best. Promise. But getting killed by an animated chair kill isn't a real good career move for a member of our estimeed society.
GM ShadowLord |
Because the chair is busy constricting White Eagle, the axe swing from Gaeldrung comes dangerously close to slicing into it. The axe chop misses by an inch and slams into the floor next to it.
Zhoron takes aim and fires a beautiful shot at the chair. Zhoron stares down his arrow, sure that it will strike true. And it does -- only to hit the hard material that it is made from and fall harmlessly to the floor nearby.
Shortly after Zhoron's arrow takes flight one is fired from Lukaas's crossbow. Again, excellent aim and focus allows Lukaas to lock onto the chair and place a bolt squarely in the chair - except that it also seems to strike the chair and fall harmlessly to the ground nearby.
Yes -4 penalty in affect. Eldak toss me a Knowledge Arcana.
Zhoron Moonmist |
when you say it "falls harmlessly to the ground", are you implying that no apparent damage was taken by the chair? (due to hardness, dr, magic, or some other means) Or is that a dramatic visialization, the arrows DID have some effect?
@Lukaas - I put all kinds of skill points into my bard's knowledge skills, and without fail, everytime I try to do a monster knowledge check, I roll less than 5. *sigh* epic fail on Bard-ing! I feel your pain on the chair check. lol
Eldak Moonshadow |
"Somehow it is protected. Give me a moment to see if I can recall anything."
Knowledge Arcana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Sadly I won't get much more than Lukaas it seems.

GM ShadowLord |
Unfortunately Eldak does not remember much of anything about magic chairs either. However, he does seem to recall that ranged weapons are extremely ineffective against animate objects. Couple with the fact that the chair obviously is extremely hard, it seems that those avenues of attack would likely prove futile at the moment.
Lukaas Penn |
Well, I guess we'd better should fight this chair in close. Our ranged weapons aren't really effective, and there's too much risk hitting White Eagle..Anyone can produce fire? It's a wooden chair, after all.. It should burn!
Lukaas tries to think, and finally an idea springs to his mind
Gaeldrung, come to me, I got a treat for your axe that can give us the needed edge in this fight! Zhoron, try to hit the feet of the chair with your sword to put it down. I'm sure White Eagle will chair-ish you after that!
Get my Oil of Magic Weapon out of my backpack, for Gaeldrung's axe. Isn't White Eagle out of fight, after 12 damage? The guy is tougher than it seems!
GM ShadowLord |
The chair continues to tightens its arms until it literally squeezes the life from White Eagle. His ribs begin to snap as his lungs are crushed, the chair continuing to tighten around his body. 7 Damage, White Eagle @ -4 HP and Dying.
Once White Eagle is no longer a threat the chair releases him, letting his body slide to the with a thump. After one threat is down the chair rotates towards the closest threat.
I need you guys to update your positions on the map, I find it hard that some of you were attacking from your current spot! :)
Gaeldrung |
Gaeldrung calls on the power of the Lord in Iron. His god's blessing surges through him and empowers his body. He roars and brings his ax down in a mighty overhand chop.
Swift: activate Judgement: Destruction with my feat Judgement Surge for +2 damage
CHOP!: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
damage: 1d12 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 2 = 15
Edit: WoHoo! The dice cooperated this time!
Lukaas Penn |
Wonder if Gaeldrung will need my Oil, after all..
Marvelous strike, Gaeldrung! Do it again, just to be sure...
Lukaas starts to sing a battle song praising the Lord in Iron
Inspire Courage, +1 to hit and damage, round 1/8- unless the chair is down for the count, then the song is for pure pleasure
Eldak Moonshadow |
Eldak takes the opportunity with White Eagle no longer in the chair's grasp to hit it with an orb of acid. The wizard begins muttering some words in Elvish as a spell begins to materialize in front of him.
Acid Splash Spell
Ranged Touch Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Acid Ord: 1d3 ⇒ 3
Zhoron Moonmist |
Zhoron will try and see if the silver longsword has any effect on the chair.
silver longsword: 1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 21 flanking and inspire
damage: 1d8 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 1 = 13
GM ShadowLord |
Eldak is able to direct the orb of acid into the chair, catching the top of it and bursting the acid all over it. The acid begins to smoke and burn, but does not appear to penetrate the thick material the chair is constructed out of.
Zhoron did you factor in the -1 damage for the silver weapon?
Zhoron also cuts a large chunk of the chair off, causing it to wobble and shake unsteadily. The animated object apparently has enough left to continue its fight however.
The chair explodes into Gaeldrung, several of the large splintery sections pierce his body in numerous places causing massive puncture wounds. 9 Damage
Party is up!
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Gaeldrung |
Gaeldrung is suddenly and severely wounded. Hunks of wood are lodged in his arms and his body demands that he retreat to heal, but the hymn played by the skinny man calls to mind the pounding of drums and the clash of arms in the temple. He knows that retreat is not an option now.
With the power of his god in his arms and the song of the bard in his ears Gaeldrung counter attacks with reckless abandon.
DIE!+flank+inspire: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 2 + 1 = 8
damage+judgement+inspire: 1d12 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 = 4
I think I have flanking, but I can't open the map right now. If not, please take that bonus off.
REALLY DICE!. After a lead up like that?! Really!
*Grumblegrumble*
HP: 2/11
Zhoron Moonmist |
no, I did not factor the silver penalty into the damage.
Zhoron, after seeing the longsword performed better than an arrow, maintains his flanking position and swings again.
silver longsword: 1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 19
damage: 1d8 + 4 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 - 1 + 1 = 6
