@Empheria: Yes, I'd say it applies to the Illusion Sphere.

@Dragonborn3: Welcome! I must say you have chosen a really hard class to emulate. By staying in Spheres of Power, best I can think of is a Dragoon Mageknight, but even then it's a mount.
Still, I like having people play what they want to play, so if translating a Dragonrider to vanilla + Spheres turns out to be overwhelming, I could look to rebalance one of the (admittedly terrible) Drake archetypes.

The Conjuration Handbook playtest document has an archetype for the Mageknight that gives them a Conjuration companion that scales with class level as a mount, might be a good option.

Shadow Lodge

Honestly Dragonrider isn't as strong as it looks, and losing its spells for Spheres helps.

Easy conversion would be it gains An SoP talent like a paladin and then use Somatic and Verbal casting as drawbacks.

@Aipace: Thank you, I didn't know it was in playtest. Problem is, it's still focused on summoning. Looks neat, though.

@Dragonborn3: I'm sure it's not (also, Spheres of Power is not mandatory), it's just that I was trying to avoid opening up to too much 3rd party material. As submissions until now have been conforming to those guidelines, it would be a bit unfair if I then allowed another thing, so I'd prefer trying to work within those boundaries.

That said... Is there anyone else (including the current players) who'd like to use different 3rd party classes (other than Godlings, Psionics or Path of War, please)? Because I'm a big softie who can't say no and has never killed a PC I guess it wouldn't harm much to add a few more options?

Not in my case. :-) For me, I'm pretty reliant on Hero Lab to make my characters, since my dictation software that I use to write my posts makes doing character sheets difficult, and that much typing cripples me. It's the same reason I didn't dive into Spheres of Power for Vorin, really. (I know the dataset is available on RPGNow, but I'm still broke from Christmas.)

Any problem with Monster classes?

I still have the free public beta that was released long ago, but the retail version fixes a number of issues..

Shadow Lodge

I'm sure if it's an issue I can remake it with the allowed options.

EDIT: Does the Apprenticeship Override apply to class feature companions?

Looks like we've hit the soft deadline for character submissions.

So the submitted 11 likely don't need to worry about any new competition.

And an alias! Hoora!

a repost of meralis's backround, so it's all in one place.:

Name- meralis sandtrodder

- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
"I'm told by my parents i'm persistent, though I'm not really sure what that means."
- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
"we used to travel a lot when I was younger, but my parents looked for someone to adopt me when it became clear I couldn't keep up with everyone else in the group. So I was given to my new mom, here."
- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
"I... Think I just answered that? I live with my new mom, who is much better then my old one, for sure. She doesn't make me keep traveling all the time."
- What do you want to do when you grow up?
"I've heard tales of mighty swordsmen who explore the world with nothing but a sword. When I grow up, I wanna do that too! I've already learned to sense and walk around things when I hold my dagger close. I think I might be able to do it."
- Who is your best friend? (hint hint, you may do joint backgrounds...)
"well..."(Leaving this open, for now.)
- What is your favorite scary tale?
"my... Favorite? I don't like being scared... Well, Uhm... I think I'd have to say the scariest was when I was told of a deity that turns people into snakes."
- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andosana?
"my mother is the best! She keeps the house almost exactly the same all the time so I can move around it without issues. Who's shalelu? Sorry, I don't leave the house much... But mom has finally decided that I'm old enough to wander on my own!"

(If you haven't guessed it yet, maralis is blind as a metaphor bat. This isn't easy to fix, even with magic, as it's an issue with her brain not receiving input from her eyes- this does mean, however, that she seems to walk around things just fine, and reacts to events quickly- she still sees on a subconscious level, just not a conscious one.)

If anyone wants to do a joint backround with her, let me know

@Aurora: From what I see in the reviews, those classes have some serious issues with balancing, so I'd have to say no on that, sorry.

@Dragonborn3: Thank you :)

@All: As mentioned by Aurora, the soft deadline has been reached: no new submissions from now on. You have until the 20th to finalize them, meanwhile I'll look at the numbers in case I see any problems.

Cool. If you see any issues, or if you need more information, can we get a heads up?

Of course!

Shadow Lodge

No problem, though since I never got a build submitted it ultimately didn't matter. I also couldn't get get the same flavor looking at the SoP classes. :/

@Dragonborn3 (also Whiskey and a Bonesaw, Lord Foul II and Taliesan): you still expressed interest, so you still have until the 20 to create a complete character.

Shadow Lodge

Well that's good news indeed.

Thank you, but I think I have to withdraw interest. My schedule this semester is looking a lot more time consuming than I thought.

It was a lot easier than I expected since I only had to answer a few questions. This gives me time to figure our how to explain it all if their background comes up in-character. ^-^

Spoiler:
Almos' Answers
- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
“I like to learn things and work hard when someone asks for my help.”

- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
“Oh, that's easy. My dad was a caravan owner and last year we were headed this way to get supplies and sell stuff when this evil horse with dragon wings attacked us! If it wasn't for my friend I wouldn't have escaped.”

- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
“The nice Ameiko lady is letting me stay at her inn as long as I do chores. It's just dishes and sweeping and stuff, but I get a cot and a nice blanket.”

- What do you want to do when you grow up?
“I'm going to build a temple so I can really be a priest.”

- Who is your best friend?
“Do you mean mortal best friend? I don't really know, I guess...”

- What is your favorite scary tale?
“That would have to be The Singing Bone. It's got killing and a massive beast and a punishment for when you tell big lies.”

- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andosana?
“She's the one that found me wandering around in the wild after that evil horse killed everyone else. If she hadn't brought me here I'd probably be dead, and so would Chakacoatl. Well, he'd be dead again, I guess.”

Chakacoatl's Answers
- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
“A fallen deity attempting to regain glory long since lost.”

- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
“I have bonded what little energy I have left with young Almos. He is my only priest now.”

- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
“The boy and I stay at the Rusty Dragon Inn. My presence appears to keep rowdier patrons less eager to stir trouble.”

- What do you want to do when you grow up?
“When I regain my full power I will be a complete deity again.”

- Who is your best friend?
“Almos.”

[i]- What is your favorite scary tale?
“It has been too long since I'd heard any story to be able to pick one.”

- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andosana?
“Without her the second life I gave Almos would have been squandered, and I with it. I owe her a debt.”

Character is still a work in progress.

quite a few good concepts up i gotta say

A short boy with pale blue skin and blank white eyes, who looks about 12, steps forward. He answers the questions almost like he's in a hurry to get them over with.

How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
"I'm friendly and I can think of solutions to problems easy, but I can get a bit nervous, and some people find me scary when I'm nervous."Oracle with the tongues curse, who doesn't realise he speaks in tongues when nervous, just knows some people get scared by it.

- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
"I don't really remember. I have a weird feeling I came to Sandpoint, but I dunno exactly. I only remember being here for five years but I know I'm older than that." He's a samsaran, so I thought the event that lead to his re-incarnation is that he happens to be one of Choppers victims. This was what the question regarding re-incarnation ages was about.

- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
"I live at the orphanage. They're nice there, when they don't seem to find me scary. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, most of the grown-ups tend to look at me funny elsewhere."

- What do you want to do when you grow up?
"I have this urge to go out and seek things. I think it has something to do with the fact I can sometimes know what someone's gonna do before they do it. I've never told anyone that before.

- Who is your best friend? (hint hint, you may do joint backgrounds...)
Mmmmmm....I'm not sure if I have a bestest friend, but I like it when I do stuff with the other kids at the orphanage, except when they say mean things.

- What is your favorite scary tale?
"The story of the Sandpoint devil definitely. I don't know why, but anytime I hear the story of Chopper, I go super cold and clammy. Once again harking back to my preferred reason to have brought about his reincarnation

- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andosana?
"Shalelu's the bestest person ever, cause she's the only adult outside the orphanage that doesn't do a doubletake when they see me, or peer at me funny all the time. She's the best."

Note for others:
Talsin is very happy to play games with the others, he's just not a fan of people who say mean things, especially to him, as he sometimes has to see them twice, due to his momentary glimpse revelation

Alright, I think I'm good to go. I reflavored Samsaran to be just a human reborn in a new body by a god and traded out the racial Language for Draconic. Hope it's fine.

I love that we have a cool collection of unusual orphans. :-) To Talsin: I can't see Vorin saying mean things too often unless he's standing up to a bully. (Though, I'm not sure yet how he'll handle speaking to goblins. He could very well let the insults fly there.)

I think this could be a lot of fun. :-)

"Just bite them until the stop moving."

"Chakacoatl, sir, please don't eat goblins. You don't know where they've been..."

Vorin wrote:

I'll have you know the Professor is a perfectly adequate... uh, mother, yes, that's the word.

Suppose meralis could be called an orphan, but she's also adopted and was never really without a home.

I didn't mean to say everybody was an orphan, just that we have a collection of them.

I suppose orphan is a correct word for Ashling, didn't actually think about it before. Then again the concept of child adventurer's works well with that type of backstory

3 people marked this as a favorite.

For some reason I can see Trace having a big crush on Maralis.

It's funny though cause he's a bit of a show off in front of kids his age but she can't see anything he's doing so he is forced to be interesting in other ways, like conversation XD

Trace on Avienus:

He's really strong but kind of over keen about being a soldier. He's a bit older than me and it's cool seeing him train with weapons! I've seen some other kids pick on him. I'm surprised he doesn't beat 'em up cause it would be super easy for him but he doesn't. He's nice like that.

So I might have pranked them with George (the name he gave his Unseen Servant) cause bullies suck.

We haven't really talked, but when all the kids get together we play sometimes.

Trace about Andi:

She's more my sister's age so I've seen them play together but I think she prefers animals. She's nice enough but it's hard to talk to girls about girly things.

I know fire scares animals so I can't do any of my tricks for her either, cause she's always with her cat.

I heard she can see in the dark though! I haven't met many other people who can do that!

She's ok for a girl, and so long as Venice likes her then so do I.

Trace about Minodora:

Minodora is awesome. She's super talkative like me, and bounces all over the place person to person. But that's fine, is way more interesting that way. She's as keen about new things and people as I am, and is really good at keeping people's attention. Though not many people are good at keeping hers, which is super cute.

BUT DON'T TELL HER I SAID THAT!

She's a bit older than me, but not by much. She's fun to be around and never boring. She can be a bit pushy, but I'm ok with that cause her ideas are normally really fun. I don't mind being out done by her cause she's good at performing, I just like showing off :P

Trace about Vorin:

He's Andi's friend right? He's pretty cool. Doing something different everyday. I can gel with that. Plus he can do magic, like me. I saw him showing some of the other kids once.

He's younger than me, but grew up in Sandpoint so is way faster than I am running around the streets and roofs.

Seems cool, but we only hang out when all the kids get together, and don't really talk. It's nice to not be the only strange skinned kid in town.

Trace about Empheria:

Only the single coolest gnome in Sandpoint. What can you expect from my bestie? She likes watching me set things on fire, I like watching her blow things up!

We always do it near the tip though. Sometimes we freak the goblins out that rummage there. It's really funny.

Plus she says she can talk to fairies. Fairies! I like to joke that I could lift her with my magic cause she's so tiny (but I can't. Cause I tried. Don't tell her though)

She won't tell me how old she is. But that's ok cause we get along really well so that's not important.

Trace about Aurora:

Aurora can kick your but if you aren't careful. She's super pretty but not my type. I like her commitment to hard work though. She works on the farm outside the town and I heard rumors that she got kidnapped by slave traders and then rescued by a priestess who taught her secret powers and is still training her!

That's like a hero origin story!

Its good for girls to know how to fight. I want Venice to learn but Mum and Dad aren't on board. I wonder if she can get that priestess to teach Venice too?

Trace about Isaac:

Issac is super weird. Like super. weird. He's amazing. I really like talking to him. It's like he doesn't know how to be a kid but it's really nice. He has no filter and no idea when he's saying the wrong thing and it's hilarious.

I might be sounding mean, but I really do like being around him. He's really honest and eager to learn about things.

He's one of my favorite kinds of weird. I see him like a little brother, so if people aren't nice to him I singe their eyebrows or move their stuff when they aren't looking.

Trace about Ashling:

Ashling is reeealy pretty. Minodora is cute, Aurora is pretty. So I think Ashling is beautiful.

If you get too close, you can feel a little bit of crazy coming off her. That's all right. Makes her really interesting. Normal people are boring anyway.

She's older than me too. Maybe I like older girls? Anyway she and Avienus get along. I've seen them sparring together. It gets intense sometimes, she can get a bit full on.

Trace about Meralis:

*stiffens up*
She's nice and cute and can do whatever she puts her mind to.

And... and... and I'll beat any one up who tries to trick her or... or anything mean!

I noticed that there's no age so this might change to avoid Trace being creepy lol

Trace about Quiin:

I've been trying to see this kid for ages! A boy my age finally moves to Sandpoint and he won't talk to anyone! I heard rumors that people are kind of scared of him but no one will tell me why!

I mean, people are afraid of me cause I set things on fire. They're afraid of Emmy cause she blows stuff up. He can probably freeze things or something.

He can't be weirder than Issac. Maybe I should bring Issac to his house so he can feel less weird? I love Emmy to bits but sometimes you just need another guy to do guy things with that isn't really into being a soldier or, well, Issac.

It may sound like Trace doesn't like hanging out with Issac but he does he just wants a guy friend his age XD

I don't know what off-site repo means so I didn't do those guys.

Feel free to correct Trace's opinion on your character if it doesn't feel with how you imagined them :P

Figured even if we don't all get picked, I'm cool with Trace and his family making appearances as NPCs, so his relationships with every kid is important.

now that takes some work good job

I liked seeing Trace's opinion on everyone. One small thing: I actually wrote in my first post on the thread that she was 9, which turns out to be the same as Trace. I don't see a reason why she would hide that information, if she's not a lot older or younger than everyone else.

Also, the "off-site repo" people are just people who didn't put their character sheet on their Paizo alias. There's nothing else different about those two characters.

Trace is 12 though :P

Whoops, put 9 in the profile. He started out 9 but as I worked his background that made his sister too young, and the parents third pregnancy weird with how I wrote it, so I made him older.

Hope we can still be friends! D:

lol

That was a good read. If I were not miserably sick right now, I'd probably be putting together something similar.

Anyway, yes, that suits my idea of Isaac very well. He is not exactly the type of person to pick up on when something is ill-advised, especially if someone is daring him. Like the time someone dared him to jump into pasture to sneak some crabapples and got kicked by a mule or the time he heard a story about pirate treasure stashing in the cliffs around the Old Light and tried to have a look. He washed up down the beach half an hour later sodden but none the worse for wear. His... unique nature makes him durable enough to survive these sorts of expeditions while still illustrating why they are ill-advised.

Just the sort of friend an overly enthusiastic and charismatic kid needs.

Maralis is 11.

She hasn't really had a chance to form an opinion of anyone unless they visit regularly, because she can't get out much until recently, her mother not letting her because of her condition.

Assuming trace does visit often-

opinions on trace:

"he's certianly enthusiastic, and I can enjoy that. But he seems really akward around me a lot of the time, and I don't really know why. I also don't understand his faciation with painfully hot things. Mother says it's something that has to be seen, but... Well... Anyway, he's nice. I do like having him around. Nice to have someone visit.

(Also, some errors centered around con fixed in the alias)

Trace a bit smoother around her than he is talking about her. He can thank his high charisma score for that.

He doesn't really know what he feels, just that it's different from what he feels for Emmy and for Venice.

He does that typical thing of being all about whatever they are about then needing to read up about it when they get home cause they have no clue what it is.

Plus side is that he is learning to describe things to her using emotion and feeling instead of colours, sizes etc. Figuratively and literally. So it's forced him to read more to find out more words XD

He's also practicing making more tactile things, instead of just pretty things, so he can show off to her as well as other people.

I can see them just being good friends in the end, depending on if they get to go adventuring or not.

But whenever anyone asks about her, he gets really awkward cause he doesn't know how to say the answer properly. It's moments like that when he is glad she can't see how red he goes :P

Ah. Sorry for misunderstanding a bit.

That is a fantastic idea, Trace. :-) No problem on Vorin, you got him pretty well.

If I have time tonight, I might try to put something like that together myself. I've been kind of thinking about it anyway, as I read everybody's questions and backgrounds, I just haven't put it into words. :-)

icehawk333 wrote:

Its totally fine. There was literally no way you could've known he would act any different than how he answered XD

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This is mostly guesswork, and I'm willing to change relationships as needed for whoever I'm grouped with, if I get selected. :-)

Avienus:
“He is so cool! He’s really, really, really strong, but he isn’t a bully at all! He actually kind of stands up for us. He’s always practising fighting, too. Well, that gets kind of boring. I kinda wish he wanted to play more. But it means he’s really good at it!”

Andi:
”She’s my best friend, and my sister. Isn’t anybody more fun than her and Licorice. She’s brave, too. She isn’t even scared to go out in the forest. I wish I was brave enough to go with her.”

Vorin is afraid of the forest because he subconsciously believes his parents, whoever they were, abandoned him because he looked weird. His worst fear is of finding his real parents in the forest, and finding out he’s right. (Of course, he’s not. It’s much worse, but I’m guessing that won’t come up.) Not that he really understands all this. All he's consciously aware of is that the forest makes him nervous. That’s not to say that he won’t go into the forest if the story takes us there - that would be annoying more than dramatic - just that he’ll be nervous doing so.

Mindora:
”She’s Avienus’ friend. She’s nice, and she sings really good. I don’t know how she reads so much, I’d feel like things are crawling on me if I sat still that long. But I guess she’s, like, almost a grown-up.”

Empheria:
”I’m scared she’ll set me on fire sometimes, but other than that she’s cool. We don’t play much, but I think that’s just because I don’t like fire as much as she does. But I like her other magic!”

Aurora:
”I don’t know, she’s older and we don’t really talk much. And she’s lucky. She got adopted.”

Though Vorin will put up an act for Andi, he really wants to be adopted into a family. (Of course, he wants Andi to come with him.)

Isaac:
”Isaac is really cool! He gets in even more trouble than me, and he never even gets hurt! He’s weird like me, but kind of backwards. My skin is weirdly dark, his is weirdly white. I think he must get cold a lot, because he’s always wearing lots of clothes.”

Ashling:
”I don’t know her very good, she’s older too. But she’s like me, always doing things the grown-ups call ‘reckless’, whatever that means.”

Trace:
”He’s older, so we don’t play much, but I like him! His skin is a strange colour too, and he does magic like me. Except he likes fire, too. I guess that’s why he’s Empheria’s friend.”

Meralis:
”I like her. She can’t see, but she doesn’t let that stop her. I don’t know her very good, though. She hardly ever came outside, before.”

Quiin:
”Who’s that? Really, there’s someone new in town? I’ll go meet him! Wait, where does he live?”

Álmos:
”I don’t know much about him, he does a lot of chores at the Inn, but I heard he’s got a really weird and cool best friend.”

Talsin:
”He’s from the orphanage with us. He’s fun, and just as weird as me and Andi. Some people think he’s scary, or crazy, but I don’t. He just sometimes talks funny. He can’t help it.”

I'll talk with anybody that wants to :)

My, but you aren't making it easy for me to choose who to pick and for which table...

Anyway, today is the last day to make changes about your characters, and I'll most likely choose you in the morrow.

Regardless, I love the job you've been doing in creating these nice little kids.

excited for seeing the results, its the most tense part of any recruitment

Good Luck everyone! Lots of great applications!

Sounds good to me! Good luck to all and don't rack your head too hard GM lol.
