Round 1, Init 16

Pillette will follow Tynan, not wanting to be left at the grizzly feast by herself. Cautiously climbing the stairs, she keeps her holy water and dagger at the ready. Double move from the first floor to the second.

She gazes over the statue on the stool, looking to see if anything about the macabre sentry with a top hat is at all familiar.

Sol, hearing trouble upstairs, double moves up the stairway.

|Roll20 Link- Carrion Crown| |Roll20 Link- Age of Worms|

Tynan strikes mightily at the skeleton on the stairs, barely damaging the bony thing with his dagger. Mortimer crosses the room, closing on the diminutive sentry. Ascaria secures the second floor, sling in hand. Raella springs up the stairs. Pillette arrives at the top of the stairs, taking in the sentry that's taking up Mortimer's attention at the moment. Solrisa brings up the rear, just as the skeleton retreats up the stairs.

The sound of shattering glass echoes from up above, and wet shuffling can be heard along the floorboards, as well as faint moaning.

Pillette:

The creature doesn't seem to stand out in any familiar sense, other than its similarity to the halfling race. It's difficult to tell with all the bandages, but the ears are all wrong. It's possibly more like a goblin.

Mortimer's proximity lets him understand that the sentry is a mummified specimen, likely goblin, dressed in a fine suit and hat that serves as a Noble's outfit for small folk (goblin, halfling, gnome...).

A voice calls from above, raspy and irritated. "I would rather not deal with intruders up here. This is delicate work I do. Go away."

|Roll20 Link- Carrion Crown| |Roll20 Link- Age of Worms|

For those accessing the upper floor...

A single chamber dominates the observatory’s entire upper floor. Light filters through the wide slit in the roof, bathing the center of the room in illumination. Four large mirrors set along the outside wall reflect bright beams into the direct center of the room, a recessed operating theater accessible via two short sets of stairs. The beams specifically target a blue-skinned humanoid figure splayed out upon an operating table, its chest completely opened and pinned back against the table with long metal needles.

Two long shelves cluttered with piles of papers, rotting organs, and instruments comprise the east and west extent of the operating theater, and are only a few inches lower than the chamber’s outer floor. Four metal-and-glass tanks, each easily large enough to hold a human, flank
the short stairs leading to the operating theater. Each tank is now partially full of yellow liquid streaked with rust, shattered from knee-level up.

Standing behind the operating table is a gaunt man, wearing a long black, armless coat. Around his neck is a birdskull necklace. Around his wrists are leather bracers. He appears to be a man in his late 30s, gruff stubble chasing up his chin, his hairline chasing back over his skull. His grey eyes consider the new arrivals with disdain.

Before you stands three gray-skinned men. Behind them stands the small skeleton, resetting its crossbow. In the operating theater stands a much larger humanoid, also of a grayish complexion. Its ears reach down to its massive shoulders, and its teeth protrude unevenly beyond its lips. Its dead, white eyes look through you.

The gray men begin to crowd the top of the stairs. Two of them only have to reposition, before attempting to slam the top-most opponents.

Slam Attack v Raella: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 for 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 damage

Slam Attack v Tynan: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 for 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 damage

Bless (+1 attacks, saves vs fear (morale))

GM Rat Sass: Bless and whether it effects Mort:
I cannot see Mort as he is too far away, however I have line of effect to him as I walked back down the stairs a bit. Mort is in the radius of Bless, which states "The caster and all allies within a 50-ft. burst, centered on the caster".

As I am not actually selecting targets with this spell, I argue it works on Mort. Unlike, say, Mass Cure Light Wounds where he may be in range of the spell, but I cannot see him to select him.

Please let me know if you disagree.

Sass,Possibly Ascaria:

Upon hearing the commotion upstairs, Mortimer moves swiftly across the room to examine the messy desk and the apparatus peaking out of the clutter. He overturns the desk or otherwise vandalizes it in an effort to destroy the apparatus, hoping it's somehow connected to the corpse animations both above and below the bed chamber.

He is careful to not get any goo upon his person.

|Roll20 Link- Carrion Crown| |Roll20 Link- Age of Worms|

Ascaria, Mortimer:

The desk is easy enough to overturn. The paperwork and apparatus both fall to the floor. The paperwork makes very little noise on its way down. The apparatus is much more vociferous about its maltreatment. Bending metal, then breaking glass, as the table crashes down on part of the apparatus. Two separate puddles take form on the floor in front of the desk, likely from two of the syringes once attached to the apparatus.

The sound of destruction resounds on the floor below, involving the shattering of glass syringes, metal hitting the floorboards, and wood-on-wood scraping as something large is moved.

The raspy voice raises its volume. "Hey now!! Not only have you violated my inner sanctum, you're ransacking my bedchambers as well?! Where on earth are your manners?!"

Tynan strikes out at the gray man, a strong stroke crossing too soon. Mortimer serves as bull to the bedchamber china shop. Ascaria repositions in order to grace all of his friends with his blessings. Raella almost cleaves one of the gray man in twain. Pillette hurls a vial of holy water, connecting precisely with the skeleton, finishing what Tynan started. Solrisa pauses thoughtfully, bending towards the light, and waiting for her chance to sprout through the front line.

The gaunt man strides across the operating theater, intent on gaining a closer look at the intruders. Sizing up the two in front, the gaunt shakes his head, looking past them at the smaller individual. "Ah. A slip. Cowardly, groveling, little things. You are the one responsible for that, eh?" He points at the pile of bones. "No matter. We'll start with you. Unless you care to surrender? Your swordsman doesn't look so good..."

Frozen in place, her nose offended by her own rot, the halfling's eyes glare daggers at the heinous one who just insulted the ever-reliable Mort.

Her mind fumes at the mad-one, concentrating on what the Lady might have done to one like this. Then you won't mind whatever we do to your corpse once you're dead, will you? Certain houses and temples would find you interesting even if, or perhaps especially if, you've passed on. You insult Mort like that again and maybe I'll have your remains sold to someone who will take you back and forth across that line, letting you know first-hand just how comfortable it is to be a 'building block.'"

Tynan takes up arms once again, threatening but not yet connecting with the remaining blockade. Mortimer resists a strong urge to flee the premises, and pounds dead flesh, doing less damage than he otherwise would. Ascaria sends a crackle through the air, healing the injured others, and sets up his own gnomish blockade. Raella tries to whittle down the gaunt man's defenses, but comes up short. Solrisa steps up on the last grey man, finishing him off.

The remaining great grey hulk continues its attempts at discouraging the trespassers, swinging at the injured rager in front of him.

I don't trust this one, but he is rather talkative. I wonder if he would have anything particularly informative to say? And would he speak the truth? I doubt he told these poor minions what he was up to before they passed.

Tynan pauses in thought, wary of the gaunt man and the implied threat the man represents. Mortimer launches himself across the room, disrespecting the fragile-framed fellow's personal space. The man raises his hands, waving off the brute.

"Hey, hey now, must you paw me...?! Don't touch me!!" His words are the only resistance the man puts up against Mortimer's violation.

Ascaria, in spite of Mortimer's unwelcome intimacy, manages to brain the gaunt man's forehead, splitting his brow and bleeding the man heartily. Raella circles the great grey, and almost downs it with one blow. Solrisa closes distance, and counsels the gaunt man to forfeit his bones. Pillette looks like she's about to say something important, but hesitates.

Solrisa wrote:

In his preoccupation with answering to Solrisa and Mortimer, blood trickling into his eyes, the gaunt man fails to call off his great grey. It swings again on Raella.

Once the grapple is maintained in the subsequent round, you can choose to either Move/Damage/Pin your grappled opponent, as part of the standard action to maintain the grapple. So the second roll is unnecessary. Now that you've given the gaunt man the Pinned condition, next round you can attempt to tie him up, if you so choose.
