Solrisa begins a slurry of magical attacks aimed at the black portal. Without the ability to locate the true nemesis grappling Eidi, the maiden shatters the portal with the last thrust of her sword.

Eidi is released from his grapple.

Eidi, Mortimer:

With your contact, you can see one of Solrisa's strikes actually hit the ghoul, though it doesn't seem to do as much damage as you'd expect if it were standing directly in front of her.

Detect Magic + Knowledge(Arcana) DC 20 or Spellcraft DC 20:

This side of the portal is now ruined, but the other side of the portal is still active, and still linked to this side. Should one desire, all one need do is touch the ruined portal, and cast Plane Shift, Teleport, or Greater Teleport, and you will arrive on the other side.

Ascaria absorbed a little more of Eidi’s pain*. "Nicely done Sol!"

He decides to channel, just to make sure everyone is healthy and ready to go.

If anyone needs it, Ascaria will hand around, or use, the wand of Cure Light Wounds. Go ahead and roll and I'll track the charges.

He then peers at the portal, uneasily.

He frowns. "Oh."

"We've ruined the portal. The other side still works, but this side is kerfunct. There is a fix - Plane Shift, Teleport, that sort of thing will re-activate it." he looks to Eidi and Eri, "Can you manage any of those? I'm afraid I cannot. Maybe we can get a couple scrolls. I still have a little cash."

Bald male Half-Elf elder

Suddenly released, Eidi's struggle to free himself pushes him back as the portal shatters. The half-elf rolls back, his ass landing into the stony ground.

"That was close" While most of his wounds disappear when Ascaria channels his life energy, Eidi completes his own healing by using weapon of awe to request a healing psalm.

"Thanks for that Solrisa" he adds while looking at the shattered ruins of the portal.

"If that is true, I fear it is out of my possibilities now" the elder strokes his Aroden amulet "To be fair, I have never tried to request such a powerful blessing. I do not know if it might work, I can definitely try"

"Otherwise we might find help in a powerful wizard house, or a cathedral"

If the party agrees to attempt travel now:

Eidi attempts to use his sacred symbol daily spell use to desperately pledge for a plane shif spell, even if a lesser version, to travel through. If it does not work, he attempts to dimension door to the place he saw.

"Urm, ah, yah... O.K.. Sure, we could do that..." he stammers nervously. "Uh, do you think someone on the other side of this portal is trying to send things through but can't -- maybe because that apparatus over there is broken?" he asks, pointing to the strange broken apparatus. "Do you think maybe the Wind Dukes like Zosiel broke that to stop them? Was the Ghast just stuck for a long time? If we fix this side, will we just be able to walk through safely, or will things get sent and stuck again?"

"And what has this to do with any of it?" he says, holding up the Talisman of the Spheres.

"That must have been the portal interfering and taking damage. Maybe." he shrugs - guessing - not being all that well schooled in this sort of thing.

"I think Allustan is on the other side of that portal, so I think it was working before we got here." he looks over at the apparatus. Does it look like Allustan changed or modified it at all since we were here last?

"I don't think we can fix this side, not from what I saw. The spells I listed, would just let us go over to the other side. It wouldn't fix it. I dunno, can we fix it some other way?" he looks to Eidi and Eri for suggestions.

Despite Eidi's fervent attempt to beseech his god, he is unable to focus the power of teleportation at this time.

Eidi:

When you attempt to Dimension Door, you feel that it might almost work, had this side of the portal been intact. Putting yourself in another's shoes, a Dimension Door would have worked keenly, putting you on the other side, without disturbing the portal's occupant altogether.

Mortimer proffers the Talisman of the Sphere to both Eidi and Eri.

Spellcraft DC 31:

This small adamantine loop and handle is typically fitted with a fine adamantine chain so that it can be worn as a necklace. When held by an arcane spellcaster who is concentrating on control of a Sphere of Annihilation, a talisman of the sphere doubles the character’s modifier on his control check (doubling both his Intelligence bonus and his character level for this purpose).

If the wielder of a talisman establishes control, he needs to check for maintaining control only every other round thereafter. If control is not established, the sphere moves toward him. Note that while many spells and effects of cancellation have no effect upon a sphere of annihilation, the talisman’s power of control can be suppressed or canceled. A talisman of the sphere can be destroyed only by throwing the item into a sphere of annihilation.

Ascaria sorts through his drawings, and finds that the strange apparatus is wholly untouched, unaltered in any way, though still broken, by the looks of it.

Eri:

Nice roll. The portal could probably be repaired. That would likely take over a month, with roughly 25000 gp worth of materials, for a crafter who could create Wondrous Items, and understands any of the spells Gate, Teleport, Greater Teleport, Teleportation Circle, or Plane Shift. Maybe closer to two months...

Eri looks at the portal and makes some calculations, mumbles a bit and then says,
”Yeh, the portal could be fixed, but it will take maybe an entire ton of gold and one month.”

He mumbles some more. ”No, two months. And we’ll need to bring someone in who can make wondrous magic items and know how to teleport or move between other realms of existence.”

"Mmm... I know something about this... it somehow seems familiar to me" Eidi scratches his goatee thoughtful "I will need to check some notes, just give me a day" he hands back the talisman to Solrisa.

"So we are stuck here..." the elder looks around "We are probably better going back to Diamond Lake to look for help on traversing the broken portal"

"Yeah, I feel like I should know. Like it's some famous piece, but I dunno, could be anything. We've had it a while, found it down here in fact."

He moves over to Tynan's body. "As we're going back to town, let's take Tynan and see to his burial as well."

He takes some of Tynan's things and gives them to Sol and others to carry and he asks Mort to carry the body. He walks rather more slowly than the walk in as he rewinds Tynan's life in his head, remembering all their moments together.

When they pass the dragon again, he casts Detect Magic and sweeps for any magics the great beast may have had on/with her.

As the town nears, his pace quickens as his instinct to help others pushes him onward. Allarnon is beyond that portal, and needs our aid.

As they enter the village, he guides the group to the undertaker. "After this, we should report the dragon's slaying to the others. We could start with the sheriff and let him spread the word. Then onto the church. I can cast Plane Shift from a scroll well enough I think, and we'll need two."

"Oh. Uh. This is going to be costly. Does anyone have any cash left?" he eyes Tynan's old possessions and considers what can be cashed in to save Allustan. He takes the papers for Allustan from him and stuffs them in his Haversack. The other items of value he hands to Mort to carry for now.

Mortimer, Solrisa, and Ascaria have heard Allustan speak on the Talisman of the Sphere before, albeit a while ago.

The gnome sweeps the dragon, and finds nothing of magical aura about it. On the body of his former friend, he finds a dragon's hoard.

Solrisa smiles as she checks on Eidi's wounds, then at the damaged doorway.

"Maybe after we get this fixed, we'll let me go first...that way I can die and you'll be safe, Eidi," Solrisa cheers happily as she examines the gate.

She ends her examination to go help prepare Tynan's body for carrying back to down. She wraps his body in the rope so the limbs aren't flopping about, grabbing and dangling in weird ways.

"I have some money, Ascaria, about 4500 gp...you're welcome to all of it to help with the needed spells."

Solrisa grabs Tynan in her man hands and slings the be-roped corpse over her shoulder and begins to walk back towards town.

"Ooh! Yes! I have some proof here of the death of the Dragon," Mortimer says, patting the sack containing Ilthane's horns. "Maybe it'll be good for the Town's morale, or something -- seeing physical proof."

He watches Sol bind the pieces of Tynan's corpse together, and as the others follow Solrisa back to Diamond Lake, he pauses momentarily to regard the corpse of the Dragon.

... Jerk.

He tightens his LizardHood "headband" and heads off after the others.

"Oh, hey, I dunno if this is true or not, but at one point when we showed the talisman to Allustan, he said something about the Talisman of the Sphere, and that it controlled holes in our reality where stuff leaked out. Total destruction. Said it was a bad thing."

"Not the talisman, but rather the sphere. So we hung onto it, but we really don't know how it works."

"Thanks for the offer Sol, but I think we can maybe sell a few of Tynan's things and pay for it that way. Maybe get some other tools as well so we can overcome our obstacles and save Allustan." he frowns uncomfortably, "but we should keep this rope. I won't always be able to give us flight, and this rope is pretty awesome if we're in a tight spot." he hesitates, but takes the Rope of Climbing unless anyone else would rather carry it.

He nods at Mort's suggestion. "So who do we give it to? The governor, the sheriff, somebody else? I dunno."

"Oh Solrisa, I appreciate your kindness. But this is an old lonely one. My life has been long already" Eidi's smile becomes wide towards the half-elf "Your kind spirit is much more valuable to this world. And it would be a pity Mortimer loses such a outstanding female. There is no need you take any risk to protect this old half-man" he brings his hand to the back and makes sign of pain.

"Is there any quality drawing or statue of Allustan?" asks Eidi worried while the group walk back to Diamond Lake "That might help me attempt to locate him through divination magic"

"There is one way we can... someone can help us through..." the half-elf's face expression glooms "But he is greedy, none the type you would like to treat with..."

"Let's talk it plainly. I offer to bargain the service of someone I know during a couple of days so he can plane shift us inside then outside of the portal's plane"

Ascaria is quite impressed, "So you can summon someone who is powerful enough to shift us over there?! Well, by all means let's go. If that ghast thing is running loose, who knows what Allustan may be facing. We should act with haste."

Ascaria votes to try the summons.

"Oh, hey, Mort. I think you should take this cloak. It's a little better than yours. We can take yours and sell it if you like." he suggests.

Mortimer nods in agreement as Ascaria reminds them of why it is that they carries the Talisman of the Spheres.

"That's right, I forgot!" he exclaims.

Ooooh, I'd love to drag these bloodied things into that great hall of his and dump them onto those shiny couches of One Eye'd Neff... but that would only cause a headache for someone else.

"Well, if I were Governor, I imagine I'd like to know before anyone else."

"I do not know about this Balabar Smenk" Eidi answers to Mortimer "This one help me out of a plane I was trapped some years ago. The geedy one will not only request me to recover an orb he had been after for long but also took my magic pot of replenishing cookies"

Eidi's face is that one of disgust "And then he left me alone in the middle of the desert of Nex because he also wanted my staff and I would had to remember him of our initial deal. He conveniently keeps forgetting our arrangements" the half-elf sighs "I came to know him through one of Aroden servants. But he will make me pay well for every bit of information I sought about the Great Beyond"

Seeing that most of the party would agree in order of getting it done fast and soon, Eidi draws a star in the ground of the Crain "I plan to offer him a claim in an object at the other side of the portal. But I don't know if you would agree with that"

Once finished, Eidi will start the ritual that after 10 minutes will call the mercane to the room through the daily use of his bonded symbol. He will stop if someone in the party expresses doubt or comes up with another solution.

"Aroden, hear my plea as this humble group needs to save one of your human children. I call Gilipollas to my side!" Eidi leaves a scroll of wind wall and one of delay poison inside the star as the initial payment.

"Eidi, what do you mean a claim? Let's just pay him off, I don't want to share what we may find beyond. It may be something of Allustan's gear we find next, and I don't want to promise something of his."

He holds up a ring of protection +1 "How about this? It's quite valuable and should cover most of his cost I should hope!"

Having said his peace, he trusts Eidi to do what is right with his ally, and the party. He watches and enjoys the careful casting-ritual Eidi performs. A short while into it, he realizes he should capture this moment, and begins to draw the room and Eidi's ritual - but he leaves an open space in the drawing for his summoned ally.

When whatever it is appears, he draws frantically, trying to capture its essence on paper with the rest of the drawing. Because he left an open space for it, it has the look of a slight halo all around the creature - a nimbus of light in the charcoal drawing.

He smiles at the drawing, utterly satisfied that his skills have reached new heights. He's filled with a warm glow of pleasure at the piece.

Solrisa seems quite perplexed that Eidi doesn't want her to die for him (as if that was his choice) but smiles cheerfully anyway. She would die for him.

And when Eidi explains that he has friends who might help, Solrisa double down on her belief that the half-elf's life is worth saving.

"Oh yes, Eidi," Solrisa agrees. "If you have friends who can help, we should call upon them." She claps her hands in excitement, waiting to see what will happen.

The drawing of the star on the ground begins to glow a faint blue. The ground itself becomes translucent, as light begins to filter into the Cairn from a space beneath the floor.

Perception DC 20:

There are red and purple celestial lights you can just barely perceive past the glowing star's light.

Slowly, a large humanoid, cloaked in a red and green overlay, cloth pants, and some kind of skinned boots. He continues to rise, until his 10' tall frame has wedged itself into the alcove with all of you. It hits its head against the stony ceiling, causing it to bark an angry complaint.

Infernal:

"What it. Is now. Why do. Never account. My height?!"

It turns its gaze around, searching. When it finds Eidi looking up at it, it smiles inhumanly, with opalescent teeth that look like individual saucers.

"Eidieidieidieidi." Its turn of phrase plays the half-elf's name into a prophetic single word repeated over and over. It says the name until it's sure Eidi has understood its wordplay.

"What. You want. What? You have. To give. Speak. I answer."

Its large paw-hands turn over and over, speaking in gesture until it's sure Eidi has understoon its meaning.

As soon as the creature speaks not-Common, Mortimer draws himself up to his full height, puffs out his chest in slight outrage, glancing from Eidi to the creature. He takes a step toward the creature, apparently undaunted by the roughly three and a half foot difference in height.

Is that... it sounds like a Tiefling! Eidi didn't say...!

He relaxes a bit as the creature starts speaking common, but continues to eye the creature warily.

As the outsider subtly requests a payment Eidi points to the scrolls in the center of the star "Ok. You are right. There you have some payment for a little task that escapes our mortal abilities"

"We were here stuck trying to figure out how to cross that portal and almost giving up..." Eidi points to the ruins of the artifact "when I remembered my old good friend Gili and how easy would be for him to just plane shift us to the dimension binded to the portal"

"Of course, I would not dare bother you with such a little thing without a compensation, so here you have a couple of my finest scrolls, a wind wall and delay poison one" the half-elf produces his widest smile "Sure you will appreciate them for such a simple job. Will you help us?"

He grins as he and Eidi chat, clearly knowing each other. This will be a breeze! he thinks as he carefully rolls up his masterpiece.

He jumps ahead and starts to think about the portal. "We should be ready, we don't know what's on the other side."

So we're clear, Eidi, the two scrolls were not the 'offering' to Aroden to complete the spell(525gp)? If they are the 'payment', then the conversation proceeds, but I need to see accounting for the 'offering' as well.

Gilipollas looks down, then back up at Eidi. "Papers. Have papers. Something shiny. Show me. I choose. My choice. Impress me. You know. Something special. Something rare. Will help. Of course. Will help. You know. Give me. I help." The mercane reaches towards Eidi's bag, as if to suggest that the half-elf simply yield it and allow Gilipollas full roam of the contents.

Sense Motive DC 20:

The mercane is well-aware that time is of the essence. It's been summoned like this before, likely, and understands that once it's fulfilled its duty, it will return to where it was just moments ago.

The central column of the mercane's eyes fixates on Eidi, while the pair of more humanoid eyes turns its focus on the rest of you.

Just looking for what is given as 'offering' and 'payment', for bookkeeping.

But then, of course, we all want Allustan as much as ourselves back. Thus, this little favor..." Eidi points to the ring "should come in the exchange of your promise to remain with us time enough to help us back to the Material Plane with Allustan, to this Crain or Diamond Lake specifically, once we are finished saving the lost man"

"I understand this will require from you a second casting for plane shift to look for our return" Eidi looks at the outsider's eyes "Sure this is a good deal for you"

Gilipollas spends its time responding to Eidi's initial proposal linking each of your hands, looking at magical baubles, especially rings. Taking Eidi's hand last, it gives a chortle, placing its large hand on the broken portal, and everything abruptly changes.

Gone is the rubble. Behind you stands a very intact strange apparatus. Fresh air! Quite a lot of it buffets you. This hallway is filled with rushing, screaming wind and smoke. Small hollow projections in the hallway seem to be making the noise, but it’s obvious that air inside is being pushed out at an unusual rate. The noise makes hearing and speaking difficult, surprisingly.

Gilipollas looks about, starts to fade, and begins to belly laugh.

Verbal communication between you all now suffers immensely. Perception checks DC 25 to hear each other, even standing adjacent. Spells with a verbal component require a Concentration Check DC 25.

Oh, yes, because it's a good one... The belkers can slip into and out of Gaseous Form as a Swift Action.

Both Eri and Eidi find out quickly how the words they speak, even a single command word, are critically dependent on their pristine utterance. The winds of this hall are almost enthusiastic in nature, trying to merge with the wind in your lungs by passing across your vocal chords. It takes firm control of your diaphragm to speak precisely...

The belkers don't know the fiery destruction they just avoided. They drift across the hall, seeking out the mouth breathers. Mortimer and Solrisa prove to be flames to these smoky moths. Two of them become even more gaseous, and begin to press themselves past their lips. Fortitude Save DC 17, Mortimer and Solrisa, or you inhale part of the creature. Failure, and you feel something solidify in your lungs, and you take 3d4 ⇒ (1, 3, 4) = 8 damage.

Mortimer:

Yes, this is an inhalation, so your Trait Bonus applies to this Save.

The other four test the two, beginning with playful bites.

Eidi is visibly trying to shout something at the party.

The half-elf takes profit of Ascaria's blessing to cast a spell without the need of verbs casting silent blur by pure mental desire and lunging his hand to touch Mortimer from afar after a couple passes to the front. The man's outline suddenly becomes blurred, shifting, and wavering.

Mortimer steps forward and lends a smoky a hand, though he meets with less resistance than he'd expect, and the creature is not as damaged as it might have been. He also resists the creature's infiltration. Ascaria brings fervent Blessing to all. Eri and Eidi speak words seeking power, but the universe fails to recognize their purity. Solrisa christens her smoky, first with absolution and denial, second with sword, though she, too, doesn't hit as hard as she'd like, likely.

With the half-elf gesticulating enthusiastically, he gains the attention of his recent acquaintance. A hideous-looking ghoul bounds around the black portal, reaching for the life energy of Eidi. AoO for Eri, if he's got something pointy in his hands at the moment... The ghoul is familiar to both Eidi and Mortimer.
