Mortimer Smith |
"Please tell him that I came by, Auric!"
Mortimer stands quietly for a moment after Sol leaves, looking past the Gold Cloaks after Auric.
Damned if I do anything, damned if I don't.
He strides back to the Artist and Outcast room.
"I wonder if someone is working on giving us a bad reputation. Are the dwarves attacking us from the 'grave?'"
What makes us all that special to any other team? We weren't even ranked that high. The Dwarves were too cocky to be worried about us.
"My guess is that they attempted to sabotage the top ranked team, before their battle, thinking to remove them from the competition. However, they didn't even consider that we might be able to defeat them. We may never know at this point...."
Are they trying to divide us?
"Why does it have to be any team doing sabotage? We don't even know what's wrong with Khellek. If it was sabotage, what could it have been, and who is capable of it? ... Sabotage? That's grounds for disqualification. Maybe it was just their Woe, or maybe Auric didn't support Khellek well enough this time so he fell, and Auric needed to redirect his anger. I wish he would have answered our questions, but I guess they really don't want our help."
How many belts do they need, anyway?
"I didn't hear them insinuating anything about Bleaching though... speaking of which -- did we win that bowling game? I'm afraid I don't understand it."
Mortimer Smith |
"C'mon! Let's go find out! They're pretty good natured, aren't they?" he says, cheerily.
If the gnomes are still receptive to playing the game with Artists and Outcasts, Mortimer picks up the balls the gnomes handed him earlier.
"Bear with me, please. I have no idea what I'm doing in this game."
Dex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Str: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
He has throw anything if minuses applies, even though he's not attempting to use these as weapons.
Eidi |
"If you spare me, we have gone through aplenty today. I would appreciate some time of reflection and meditation" Eidi sits heavily on his pallet and produces some ink and paper he carefully opens in front of him "Perhaps it was just the Queen's bless that made that to Khellek" the half-elf needs some effort to avoid a half-laugh.
Without touching it, he uses his magic to make the ink float and starts to draw with thick calligraphy on the paper. Eidi seems to concentrate very deeply losing grasp of the conversation going on around him.
While Ascaria and Mortimer comment to join the gnomes, the half-elf keeps himself busy producing a new scroll.
Eri Nandri |
Watching all the back and forths, Eri grabs a beer and watches the gnome game. He'll try to sit in a way that affords him a view of the room, but a chair with something to put his feet on might take preference.
Eri thinks

GM Rat Sass |
Mortimer insinuates his way back into the gnome game of bowls, which has evolved from Orbits into Mine's Longer than Yours. The gnomes are now competing to see who can roll their balls the furthest along the edge of the stream, without falling in. The natural bend left in the creek seems to be the goal. The gnomes collect their rolls, keeping the lane clear for the next bowler.
The giant manages a very straight line, but he rolls timidly, giving the gnomes something to snicker about, as they take more confident goes, being thoroughly warmed up. The game goes to Eaudil, who quietly beams as hers is obviously longer than any of the others.
The gnomes entreat Mortimer to invent his own game, as their constantly curious minds try to turn the games over and over for diversion.
...
The night passes uneventfully. A couple of the Gold Cloaks even take a moment to congratulate the Artists and Outcasts for getting rid of Pitch Blade. Makes their job more docile, and lowers the overall decibel level in the Coenoby.
For all its quiet, the night yields one bit of information, as two Gold Cloaks sit down themselves and pour themselves some wine. One complains to the other that he can't wait until they're done with the frost salamander. Keeping its cage cold is painfully tedious, lugging blocks of ice back and forth. One guard thinks he's pulled a muscle permanently in his back.
...
The next morning comes, and with it, a more subdued start to breaking the night's fast. Preaching and Bleaching are already at the tables, taking a disproportionate amount of the sizzling meats that fill the Coenoby with a pleasant aroma. Mouths busy with mastication are mouths unable to chatter, and it seems a little dissonant with their usual demeanor.
That is, until you see the Board.

Auric and Khellek, newly restored, sit down to eat as well. They themselves seem a little put off by having been scheduled first.
You also receive a bit of news regarding the Sponsors. They will not be visiting you today. The Gold Cloaks can provide no further information as to why.
It is the 8th Hour of Day 4.

Ascaria is pleased the gnomes hold no grudges for his rapid departure. When they suggest Mort create his own game, Ascaria urges him on, ”C’mon Mort, think up a good one! Maybe something to do with those iron balls we found?” He can’t think of what game might be played with those in mine but these balls in hand, but maybe it’ll give the big man some ideas.
He channels that night when the party is together, in case anyone is still injured (I think I missed a few bits of damage on Eri).
When the Gold Cloaks thank the party for eliminating the dwarves, he’s very serious. ”They were trouble, weren’t they? I’m not disappointed we beat them either.” he chuckles.
In the morning, he pays special attention to his preparations and feels a little uneasy overall. When he sees Khellek, he brightens and exclaims, ”Good work man! Glad to see you up and about!” he falls short of wishing him good luck as it might seem rude to the other gnomes.
When he learns their sponsor might not be visiting them, he approaches one of the Gold Cloaks, ”Sir, our sponsor was bringing us things for today’s bout. Seems wrong somehow that we’re not able to meet with our sponsors.” he says speaking on behalf of the other groups as well.
He smiles, ”I understand you’re just doing your job - but could you push that upstream for us? Just let your supervisor know if you would please. Thanks!”
When the posting is made, he motions to the group and heads back to the room. He waits for Message to be reinstated before speaking.
"Who or what is Madtooth?" Solrisa asks, confused. "Are we not fighting another team?"
”Remember Sol, there are three teams, so one team is fighting their ‘beast’. Madtooth is the name I guess. I wonder if it’s the same creature the guards spoke of last night. If so, sounds like it enjoys being cold - so it might do cold damage. I’ll protect us from that just in case before we head out. Also,” he grins at Eri, ”your fireballs might do more damage.”
”Any other particular things we should plan for? I’ll do my usual preparations. Sol, do you want to Shield Other again? That worked really well last time, though it felt a little touch and go there for a while.”
He turns to Tynan, "As we're not doing anything later, I may throw another spell at protecting us from fire... just in case Eri needs to overlap one or more of us along with the creature - or if they're pulling our legs." he winks.
”Also, I feel we’re being watched, and listened to. I hope Ekaym is OK. They may be onto us, so be extra wary today OK?”
Mortimer Smith |
The gnomes entreat Mortimer to invent his own game, as their constantly curious minds try to turn the games over and over for diversion.
Mortimer sets up a ramp perpendicular to the stream, and places a basket on the other side of the stream opposite the ramp. He then finds eight smallish metal flasks, and partially fills them with water to make them bottom heavy. He sets up the flasks in front of the ramp in a pyramid shape, the long side adjacent to the ramp.
He draws a line about 15 feet from the first flask. "Don't cross this line -" he explains.
"Lets see who can knock down the most flasks, and get the ball over the stream into the basket. Throw or roll, whichever you prefer."
He offers the first shot to the alpha gnome, and plays just to pass the time, letting all the gnomes win.
~~~~~~~
" Remember Sol, there are three teams, so one team is fighting their ‘beast’. Madtooth is the name I guess. I wonder if it’s the same creature the guards spoke of last night. If so, sounds like it enjoys being cold - so it might do cold damage."
"Well, if that is the case, I guess I'll have to flip this thing off," says Mortimer, switching off his Amulet of MightyFists (Cold).
He looks over at Eidi, ink swirling about is head.
"Whoa, Eidi! That's really cool! That kinda makes me want to learn magic! What are you making?"
Eidi |
Eidi smiles to Mortimer "Some emotions suppressive scrolls. Last thing I would like to see is some confusion locking my friends minds"
-----------------------
The half-elf looks at Solrisa and nods slowly "Ascaria is right. They told us one team was to fight the 'beast'. As to what is the exact nature, I have nothing to add to your guesses, but expect some kind or predator. I will need some time to think on what spells to prepare for today"
Eri Nandri |
While awake, Eri has message up at all times.
Eri watches the gnome ball game with interest, cheering Mort on.
”As we're not doing anything later, I may throw another spell at protecting us from fire... just in case Eri needs to overlap one or more of us along with the creature - or if they're pulling our legs.”
message:”I would be surprised if we were facing a frosty beast. Deception and deflection seem to be the name of the game here.”
”Also, I feel we’re being watched, and listened to. I hope Ekaym is OK. They may be onto us, so be extra wary today OK?”
message:”Not letting any of the sponsors in is troublesome. The might try to kill us for real.”
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
”Remember Sol..."
Solrisa's eyes go wide as it is explained to her.
"So...we're definitely fighting a monster or something and not people?" Solrisa ponders upon this, wondering what to do with her sword. She still has no desire to kill kill, but some monsters were different than other monsters and she'd need to see it to know.
"Well, I won't kill a dragon. Unless it's a bad dragon. I suppose I can kill a big frosty wurm, I guess. I'll have to see after I see it. Is there a way we can see it before we see it so I'll know?"
* * *
"If you want Ascaria, but if we're facing a monster, maybe we don't need it. They tend to like fighting me more than cowardly dwarves who are afraid of me or afraid of hurting me. Monsters just don't care."
No Shield Other, Sol will take Resist Energy instead in case it is a frosty.
"Let's see who can knock down the most flasks, and get the ball over the stream into the basket. Throw or roll, whichever you prefer."
The gnomes gather around the giant, impressed that something new is brought into the playing field, which extends the field beyond the stream. Eaudil steps up, and tests the technique necessary to perform on both ends of the course.
Dex Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Strength Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
She gets roundly chided, as she concentrates too hard on getting the flasks knocked down, while the ball thunks into the water, falling desperately short of the far shore's basket.
Dex Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Strength Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Her second roll puts the shush on her teammates, as the second ball finds its way into the basket with a satisfying plunk.
The night progresses, and the stories fly, as the gnomes maintain a frenetic energy which barely wanes as midnight approaches. They cajole the giant when he eventually bows out, but are good-hearted enough to know to let him go.
...
"Good work man! Glad to see you up and about!”
Khellek brightens to the salutation. "It'll take more than a couple of master monks to keep me down!" The older man shakes a fist, and smiles.
"Sir, our Sponsor was bringing us things for today’s bout. Seems wrong somehow that we’re not able to meet with our sponsors. I understand you’re just doing your job - but could you push that upstream for us? Just let your supervisor know if you would please. Thanks!”
The Gold Cloak listens politely enough to a member of one of the last Legios standing. "I'll let Captain Okoral know your complaint," is all he has to say in response.
...
The 10th Hour arrives, and you are left alone in the Coenoby, the sole Legio, the only Legio that has a date with Madtooth. Aside from quiet noises coming from the kitchen, it's the most peaceful it's been in days...
Please post Spell Preparations for Day 4, those of you who are required to do so.
Ascaria prepares the party as best he can on the way up to the arena floor. He double checks that all his links are in place, replacing any that might have been lost.
Then he starts with some protection for Sol and himself casting Magic Vestment (+2 for 9 hours) for each.
He also adds a Protection from Energy Communal (15 minutes or 108hp of Cold damage, whichever comes first).
Just in case, he pads it with another Protection from Energy Communal (15 minutes or 108hp of Fire damage, whichever comes first).
He layers on an extended Bless (+1 attacks & saves vs fear (morale)) with the rod for the group.
Finally, just before the horn is blown, he casts Prayer (+1 attacks, damage, saves, & skills (luck)) extending it with the rod before putting it away.
He prepares for the first round, ”Remember folks - try to stay close until I get the Blessings of Fervor off. If it has a breath weapon, we should be prepared against it.”
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
Solrisa thanks Ascaria for the magics upon her shield and thanks him again for understanding about the shield other under the circumstances.
She uses the wand of barkskin on herself and Mort, if he wishes it.
Short before arriving to the arena, Eidi prepares to cast a defending bone and mage armor on himself, then weapon of awe and blur on Solrisa, heroism on Mortimer and shield of faith +3 on Tynan.
Message as always
"I'm guessing it's the frost salamander the gold cloaks were complaining about [ ... ] Unless that just false information to throw us off our game..."
”I would be surprised if we were facing a frosty beast. Deception and deflection seem to be the name of the game here.”
Mortimer glances out of the door at the Gold Cloaks.
"Aw, I dunno. They seem genuinely tired of this whole affair. They are really relieved that we took out the dwarves.""Some emotions suppressive scrolls. Last thing I would like to see is some confusion locking my friends minds"
"Oooh!" Mortimer exclaims, generally impressed. "Good thinking! -- I hate it when that happens..." he says, remembering the Naga on the way to the MindFlayer's room. "and that has happened... some nasty wormy creature who spoke nicely but turned out to be very petty and evil. What was that other thing they did that I hated? Oh, right. Compelling us somehow to do things that we wouldn't normally ever be inclined to do."
Mortimer recalls Ascaria and Eri's concern about the lack of Sponsor Visitations.
"I'll let Captain Okoral know your complaint."
Mortimer suddenly remembers something.
"Hey, about the sponsors -- and Khellek's plight for that matter. Does anyone remember a stern looking woman with the Asmodean holy symbol talking to Preaching and Bleaching? Do you think maybe she had anything to do with what happened to Khellek? Should have asked them who she was..."~~~~
"Yes, please, I'll take a Barkskin," Mortimer bows to Solrisa.
Ascaria |
Mortimer glances out of the door at the Gold Cloaks.
"Aw, I dunno. They seem genuinely tired of this whole affair. They are really relieved that we took out the dwarves."
"I agree. It seemed more like an honest utterance than something meant to deceive. But who knows. We'll protect against cold as it's too good a clue to pass up, and fire just in case it's a ruse and they're hoping we do the cold and not fire."
Mortimer suddenly remembers something.
"Hey, about the sponsors -- and Khellek's plight for that matter. Does anyone remember a stern looking woman with the Asmodean holy symbol talking to Preaching and Bleaching? Do you think maybe she had anything to do with what happened to Khellek? Should have asked them who she was..."
Ascaria's face scrunches up with thought. "I imagined she was simply their sponsor, no more - their Ekaym. Maybe spiritual advisor too from the look of her, but I don't think she did anything to Khellek. Certainly nothing I saw, but I might easily have missed it. Still, I think the Gold Cloaks, or Khellek himself might have seen something if something were done."
"Look, Khellek might have just had a bad fight and Auric is overreacting. I don't think we can figure it out without more to go on and Auric and Khellek won't confide in us again until this thing is over one way or another. One thing is for sure - if someone did hamstring Khellek, then they can do it to one of us, so be on your guard."
He looks earnestly to see who one their fight with the bleaching...
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
Solrisa straps on both her swords over her shoulders, then her bow, then attaches her shield to her left arm. She is giddy and anxious and smiling. She is ready to greet the crowd and do her best.
"Mort, feel! Won't this be fun!?"
Mortimer Smith |
"Mort, feel! Won't this be fun!?"
Mort feels. He feels power surge through his thighs and biceps as he musters his resolve and redirects his stomach butterflies to his fists and feet; wondering what wonderful Woe will wrong them at the top.
"Yes, Solrisa!" he exclaims, beaming. "This is going to be the best!"
GM Rat Sass |
Before the gnomes take off to battle in the 10th Hour, Asleek the Old pulls you aside. "If I'm overly confident, there's no need here. But if we fall to Auric's Warbles, I'd like to know- what do you call that game of yours? You know, the one with the flasks and the ramp? Makes it easier to remember, the next time my gang brings up the bowls."
...
The victors of the 10th Hour return, both Auric and Khellek standing on their own two feet, though both smell a little bit smoky. Khellek is still flying.
...
The 12th Hour arrives! As the elevator platform rises, you find yourselves once again greeted by normal, sand-strewn arena floor. Gone is the blood, in every aspect, save one- the Pentagram along the floor seems to retain some of the crimson color of the blood...
Talabir the Master of Ceremonies once again takes to the announcements. "There there are! The Artists and Outcasts, fully healthy, and ready to prove themselves worthy of Day 5, and the Final Battle!!" The crowd roars, several hundreds louder than others, supporting the rag-tag team turned serious contender.
"One final test- they shall face the dreaded Madtooth the Hungrrry!! Will they survive?? Will they fall prey?? Well, no longer speculate... spectate!!!" Talabir makes his perfunctory wave to the hornblowers, and blow they do!
The gates to the east begin to slowly open... but nothing rampages onto the field. The initial surge in volume begins to quiet, as the audience begins to wait, as the Artists and Outcasts do. A confrontation imminent, surely.
Five minutes pass, then ten...
Talabir takes to his loudcasting, and reassures the crowd, and by proxy, the Artists and Outcasts. "Oh ho!! Looks like Madtooth is making it difficult!! Such a monster is not easily wrangled, but we have the utmost faith, so should you!! Any moment now... Any... moment..."
Another five minutes pass...
Mortimer whistles a dog whistle "Come!" as loud as he can.
If nothing emerges, he says:
"Everyone, stay together -- is this our woe?"
He shouts at Loris and Okoral in the stands.
"HEY! What gives?! Does your 'dreaded' beast need persuading? There are spectators waiting! Do we have to drag It out by Its tooth?!"
When 15 minutes have passed, and several of his spells have lapsed, Ascaria whispers, ”Like Mort said, stay close everyone. I’ll have another protection from cold up just as soon as we see the creature. Wait for it!” he hisses, annoyed at the lame circumstances they find themselves in.
When 20 minutes have passed and even his bless has expired, he looks to the head box of this mess and gestures, Well?
Solrisa Iome Arabasti |
Solrisa smiles and remains patient as she waits. She waves to the crowd. She blows kisses. She smiles *and* waves at the same time, proving to many that she can do two things at once.
She even leads a cheer by banging her sword against her shield, trying to get the crowd to cheer in unison, beaming all the while.
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27 Diplomacy - wave and/or tomahawk chop
She tries to make sure the crowd has a nice time even as they wait.
GM Rat Sass |
The maiden is easily able to enthrall several young men and children to reflect her enthusiasms, which in turn infects those nearby to wave along with the others, creating little pockets of tidal currents in the crowd.
The Observation platform looks on with interest. Talabir appears noticeably sweaty, as he pats his forehead with a new linen, while the Queen sits patiently, eating some dates. Loris shrugs his shoulders. Eventually, Kendra leans over to whisper a single word, curtly, and Loris looks to the East Gate, and the Gold Cloaks who have now arrived, and seem to be struggling to lift a metal gate on the newly-arrived metal container, marked 'Madtooth' on the side in gaudy red letters. The container doesn't appear at all icy. How odd.
The container opens, and a huge and weird monstrosity slides out. Vaguely froglike in shape, it has four writhing tentacles in place of front legs. Its head is mostly mouth, and its mouth is mostly teeth. A retractable stalk protrudes from the front of its head, at the end of which stare three bulbous eyes. The massive thing is a dark green save for its belly, which is pale. A powerful tongue tipped with barbs lolls wetly from its mouth.
This creature is a Froghemoth, a Neutral Huge Aberration. 1 question for every 5 point above 28.
It gains its surrounds, then hones in on the audience above. A quick flick of its tongue and you mark at least one of its attacks as having a 30' reach. The crowd shrieks, only mollified by the protective shield that illuminates in front of them, dissuading the creature from any further, impotent attacks. This is when it notices you all.
Ascaria, as soon as he sees the container, casts an extended Bless (+1 attacks & saves vs fear (morale)) using the last charge from his rod before putting it away.
Seeing no frost on the bars, and worried about what else the creature may do, he’ll start large with Blessing of Fervor for the group.
”No frost on the bars… damn those Gold Cloaks!” Ascaria swears with a smile on his lips. He imagines their duty to be very dull and boring and doesn’t feel hostility for their little fun. He does not look forward to the tongue lashing he’s soon to receive however…
The maiden is easily able to enthrall several young men and children to reflect her enthusiasms, which in turn infects those nearby to wave along with the others, creating little pockets of tidal currents in the crowd.
While he waits, Mortimer joins in the fun. All he manages instead of a wave and smile however is a wild hand flapping dance and a grimmace.
Eventually, Kendra leans over to whisper a single word, curtly, and Loris looks to the East Gate, and the Gold Cloaks who have now arrived, and seem to be struggling to lift a metal gate on the newly-arrived metal container, marked 'Madtooth' on the side in gaudy red letters. The container doesn't appear at all icy. How odd.
”No frost on the bars… damn those Gold Cloaks!”
"Maybe they didn't get It ice in time, and the Frost Salamander died, and they had to scrape this together at the last minute? I mean, look at that graffiti!" Mortimer offers, skeptically. He reactivates his amulet. "WHOA LOOK!! IS THIS A FIRST CLASS ACT OR WHAT?!" He shouts sarcastically.
”Anyone have the appropriate sauce for grilled frog legs?"
"I like garlic... Oh -- hey... I had this dream once -- ' was all mouth and eyes -- aren't frog tongues sticky? Watch out in case!"
"Mort, look! This is going to be fun!"
