Hello all, this thread is to gauge the interest from new players who are beginners to Play By Post gaming.
Who am I ?
I am new to Pathfinder game(from the Humble Bundle) but have participated in Play By Post rpgs in another forum in the past, and have played rpgs in parson as well. I’m a 40 year old working professional, hopefully that will make me responsible enough to compete a small game.
What is the proposed game?
This game will string together one or two of the Beginner Box Bash very short adventures, with characters starting out in Sandpoint as new hires into a local community service detail. Strange things are happening in Sandpoint as of late and the community needs to send people to look into it. The scene will begin in a tavern in Sandpoint and will probably range into the wilderness.
Who am I looking for?
I would like to GM a game for 4 totally new players, probably those who have just joined via the Humble Bundle, but anyone who hasn’t had a chance to join a game is welcome.
Basically the first 4 players who pose a short character concept or claim a premade character will get in. Please read the posts above yours to see if the class you want is already in use. It's ok to have multiples of any class, but variety is good too.
What if our party is some weird mix of all bards or some other non-optimized mix of classes?
That’s just how we’ll have to do it. Adapting to the situation will be fun!
What books are allowed for character creation?
Only the Beginner Box materials and Core Rulebook are allowed.
Can I use a pregenerated character?
Yes, you can choose from the four included in the beginner box or make use of the characters available from Pathfinder Society here:
Characters
Level 1 characters will be accepted.of any class from the Core Rulebook. You may create your own character or use one of the premade characters from the Beginner Box.
Character Creation guidelines
-You may build a character using the Purchase system, and have 20 points to spend.
PCGen can also support this Method of attribute creation, I like it a lot.
More details on the point buy (purchase) system can be found here.
-Max HP for your level 1 character
-Gold
Players start with the Average gold listed for their class as defined in the chart HERE
PC GEN
For Windows users there is a free computer program called PCgen. I to be very useful and I highly recommend it, give it a try, it can be found at:
HERE
There are other character creation tools also, remember to only use content from the core rulebook.
SPECIAL REQUEST
Please do both if at all possible:
1)Format the character sheet info in your account alias profile. (This is tedious to format, but please take the time to at least bold things.)
2)Create a PDF of the character sheet somehow and link to it in your account alias profile.
This is a helpful thread for sharing character info on these forums.
Time Commitment
I will at least read the forum every evening and post every 2 days. If I have some circumstance that delays me I’ll post an update.
Please endeavour to post at least every 2 days, especially if you feel like the group is waiting to proceed.
I am a new GM
I’ll make mistakes, but I’ll try my best. Let’s have a good time, and as long as we’re communicating it should be fun. If there’s any issue just communicate with me. If I make a mistake first forgive me and then gently correct me. It’s just a game.

[url=http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2ml2b?Painlords-What-We-Teach-New-PFS-Players]Another good guide[/b]
I'll start the game when we get 4 players and get character sheets sorted.
Did I miss anything? Let me know and I'll add it to this post.
If interested please post with at least a Race/Class and short character description, then create the actual sheet when possible.

Hi there. I'm new to Pathfinder (also via the Humble Bundle), but I played Basic and Advanced D&D 1e many, many moons ago.
This character is a Human Druid. He's been off in the wilderness for the past several years after an intense experience (possibly spiritual or supernatural, but he's really not sure) awakened his calling to be a Druid. At this point he's still very reserved around other beings, having been closer to the wild for so much time, which makes him seem strange and distant. He's felt drawn back to civilization for unknown reasons. He feels it's perhaps a thirst for adventure, but it may be something else...

Krakkagar |

I'm completely new to tabletop from the Humble Bundle.
My character is a Human Bard. After losing both parents as a child, he was taken in by a traveling theater troupe. His time in the troupe made him very friendly and outgoing. On his own for the first time, he hopes to help people the way his theater family helped him once upon a time.

GM Polygoon |

Welcome Krakkagar,
May Desna smile favourably upon you and your troupe and see you safely to Sandpoint.

I have played a couple of pathfinder sessions at a regular table, but I am new to PbP.
My character is a dwarven monk named Vortok Stonesmirk.
He was raised in a monastery of Irori, but because of his lack of intelligence and diplomatic skills, he was sent to keep the order in a small mining village. There he used his strength and wrestling skills to stop drunken miners from destroying the only bar.
The mine ran out, the village was abandoned, and now he is looking for a better opportunity to maintain law and order.
I had this one build as a Unchained monk, I am busy reworking him to basic rules.

Greetings Vortok Stonesmirk and welcome.
May Irori smile upon your path to self improvement and enlightenment, and may the path ahead provide some unlawful heads to crack.
So far we have a Human Druid, a Human Bard and a Dwarven Monk.
A fourth person has PMd me who would like to join, and we will soon discover their chosen path.

Dragon Rider |

Ill be entering with Brusk, a half-orc refugee from far in the east, in the Hold of Belkzen. Running from a life of oppression and cruelty, he seeks to make a life in the western reaches of Varisia, where he hopes to be something more than a savage.
After running from his tribe with a few meager possessions and weapons, Brusk had to grow up quick. He learned to live off the land and avoid the eye of those who may bring him harm. After a few months, he made it to the sleepy town of Sandpoint, where he's been helping Das Korvut, the ill-tempered local blacksmith, with heavy lifting and small metalworking projects ever since.
Life as an apprentice to Korvut was all he had pictured: a steady life without fear. He made a small wage, but it kept him fed and clothed. Despite the situation being everything he thought it would, the primal side of him yearned for something more. For adventure and excitement.

GM Polygoon |

Greetings and welcome to Brusk, Half-Orc of the East, lifter of things, worker of metal, seeker of adventure.
We have four! If you could please complete your characters that would be great. Should we aim for this Sunday for completed characters?
I'll begin the discussion thread when I get a chance this weekend.

My character sheet is in my profile now. I'm pretty sure I filled it out right.
I am not the GM, but I think I noticed some mistakes.
1) I calculated your stat buy, and I think you spent 28 instead of 20 points.
To up a stat to 16 costs 10 points, to 15 7 points, to 11 1 point, to 12 2 points, and and lowering to 8 gives you 2 points, total of 28.
2) the formula for the ability modifiers is as follows: (Ability score - 10)/2, rounded down. So a dex of 18 would give a + 4 modifier and a strength of 15 a + 2.
For both points, go this page, and scroll around halfway down. http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/gettingStarted.html#table-1-3-ability-mo difiers-and-bonus-spells
3) Your skills : You get as a bard 6 + int mod + 1 (being human) of skill points. And important: You can never have more ranks in a skill than your total number of Hit Dice. (Hit dice in this case is equal to your level) So you can never have more than 1 rank in each skill as a level 1 character.
3a) If you have certain feats, or racial abilities (not likely as human) that give you a bonus to a skill, put those under misc mod.
3b) If you put a point in a class skill, you get 3 additional points in that skill. (for easier reference and calculations, I would put these also into misc mod.)
4) If you select Bard as your favourite class, you get either 1 additional skill point or 1 additional hitpoint.
5) Ray of frost is not a bard spell, it is a spell only for wizards and sorcerors. Check this list (top of the page, Bard levels 0 for your 4 cantrips)http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/coreRulebook/spellLists.html

No problem. If you have any questions, please post them.
And a final tip I use in the paper version of the games: Take some time to write down what al your spells do exactly. Think of range, casting time, duration, effect, possibility for the enemy to make a ... Save, the DC of that save, the result of making the save etcetera.
This will save us (and especially the DM) time looking up what each spell does, as we also have a druid with his own spell list.

I also checked your sheet in, hope you don't mind.
1) I think you forgot the +2 ability score bonus humans get. You may increase one of your six abilities with an additional 2 points.
2)I don't see any knowledges under the skill section?
3) I see you are carrying a medium load, mainly caused by your clothes, armor and weaponry. If this does not worry you, no problem, otherwise we have a puzzle to solve.

GM Polygoon |

Good observations Christiaan, thanks for that.
Guys let's discuss these things in the Discussion Thread

GM Polygoon |

Hi all,
I am looking to add one melee focused Lvl 1 character for the next round of missions around Saltmarsh. This is a great group that has completed one introductory mission in the service of sheriff Belor Hemlock and is about to take on something slightly more ambitious.
I prefer players that haven't had a chance to play PbP yet, especially new players to Pathfinder. This is a beginner friendly situation. We post pretty regularly.
We currently have:
A Dwarf monk
A Human Druid with a leopard animal companion
A Human sorceress
A Human Druid
Character Creation
Please see the first post in this recruitment thread for more detailed information.
Only core rulebook content allowed for characters.
20 Point buy for Abilities
Please use a tool like PCGen (free) or HeroLab (not free) to create characters, it just makes everything easier.
Thanks, we'll leave it open until the right person comes along.

Phosnum |
If you give me a day or two to read into the core rules then I would like to start playing. I'm completely new to pathfinder and relatively new to rp.
I haven't read anything yet but from the pathfinder tales and the podcasts I listened I think I would like to play something melee. Probably a Half-Orc or Northerner barbarian. But to lock it in I need to see my options.
Let me know if you are interested.
edit: I haven't played any play by post either as of yet

GM Polygoon |

Hi Phosnum!
Yes you are welcome to join the game, it would be good to read over the different threads in this campaign, here they are:
The Campaign Info Page has the basic information that is relevant to the game we're in, and there are links there to a lot of guiding information for learning to play on the forums.
The Gameplay Thread is where we post in-character interaction and where the game plays out.
The Discussion Thread is where we talk about anything outside of the game, like creating your character.
When you're ready please post in the discussion thread to say hello and we can help you meet your goals for the kind of character you'd like to play. As you can see the members of the group are very helpful and welcoming.

Grognar the Bold |

Hey Guys
So I tried setting up my Character and I made
Grognar the half-orc barbarian.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5Qd3MlqDwJGZXpEanY4UG0waWM/view?usp=shari ng
Let me know if the character sheet looks ok to you.
Greetings Grognar(Phosnum)

Ed Reppert |

Interesting character, this Grognar. Out of curiousity, was he born into an Orc tribe, or a human one? What's the story of his parentage?
I kind of like that character sheet, too, though I use Hero Lab instead of PCGen.

GM Polygoon |

Welcome Grognar the Bold, of the northern tribe, explorer of worlds.
May Gorum bring you opportunities to test your strength and battle prowess.
Your character sheet looks good so far, if we need to make any tweaks we can as we go. I will post in the gameplay thread as the sherrif introducing you to the group.
Hi Ed Reppert, nice to meet you. Did you want to join the game?

Grognar the Bold |

Alright I shall read myself in the adventure tomorrow and introduce myself(seeing as I'm Going to bed in a minute)
The exact tribe will be chosen when I know more about them
@Ed Reppert To be honest I haven't thought of it yet seeing as I thought about making it up as I go but it will be an Half orc from a human mother.
He is raised in a human settlement and If you read pathfinder tales #2 Winter witch then I think of it a bit as White Raven. But it will be a different settlement.
He choose his deity based on what was recommended as an half orc god but it will go something like honouring his orcen ancestors and like the fact that the god will stand for fighting/mayhem etc.
As for how he was conceived it will probably be rape of the mother on a trip or something.

Ed Reppert |

Grognar, thanks for the background. I haven't read Winter Witch yet, but I will some day. :-)
Oh, btw.. I was introduced to D&D in the Navy, back in 1977. Played a little of that, and read about some other systems (Harnmaster, Gurps), but then didn't play at all for many years. I discovered Pathfinder a couple of years ago, and have been playing the card game with a friend of mine, and reading a lot. :-)

GM Polygoon |

Hmm, I think we can make room, it will be an interesting challenge since we are slightly ranged heavy.
Sorry, I did limit character creation to the core rulebook, so the traits won't be appropriate.
Traits aren't included in the Rise of the Runelords players guide but some new feats are, so after this mission, if we start the Rise of the Runelords campaign, we can have another optional character tweak session. But at this time let's keep it simple.
That said:
Greetngs Eal Longwalker of Shoanti, Outrider of the Hawk Clan. May your arrows strike down many squishy badguys.
If we can move the character creation discussion into the discussion tread that would be great.
