So, how do you want to proceed? Assuming you want to leave the devil to stew for a while, there's one more unopened door in the basement. You could also take half an hour to skim through the journal, or return to the upper floors—there is still a couple of rooms there to explore.
Zaijka Raven-born |
I threw a couple more options in Gameplay as well, haha. If you guys want to explore further while Zaijka puzzles out the terms of an agreement that would bind it to its word unbreakably (or while she digs through the journal), feel free.

It's cool, I figured. Worth a shot, at least!

Hey everyone, I'm moving to a different state at the end of the month and the next two or three weeks are going to be pretty hectic. I'm going to do the best I can to post frequently, but please move the game ahead and bot me if I'm holding anything up. Once the dust settles I fully intend to return to regular posting. Thanks!
Vibenia Scaeva |
Have as uneventful a move as possible.
GM Neirikr |
Didn't we get some pouches of black dust then? If so, Bernard, if the others allow it, will spray the dust on the light spell.
Indeed you did, but I believe they are now in the baroness' custody, with the understanding that they might be too dangerous to auction off based on the other items they were stored with. You'd have to go ask her first, though we could abridge that meeting into one Diplomacy check—basically, the results would determine whether she'll pay for you using them, if you have to pay for them yourselves, if they come out of your pay, or whatever. That or steal them, I guess. :P
GM Neirikr |
You could try haggling for more favours, but as it is, Maffei sees removing her negative levels as a mutually beneficial arrangement. She'd certainly be more willing to take on greater risks and more dangerous assignments, if she can do so at her full capacity.
Whatever your current funds are, the baroness promised you 5,000 gp for clearing Hunclay's estate (which you could, rightly, haggle up to 6,000 to cover Zaijka). The scrolls are 1,700 gp apiece, and Bernard gets a 10% discount, bringing that down to 1,530 gp per scroll.
Also worth noting: restoration can't be used to dispel more than one permanent negative level in a one-week period. There'll be some downtime after the estate, before the auction, during which you can get rid of the rest, but you can't do more than one right now.
Bernard Hammersmith |
I'm up for buying/using one scroll now, and then seeing where we're at in a week's time? Can Zaijka give us a sense of how powerful Maffei is? I can't tell if she's like a level 3 rogue or a level 10 rogue :P
Vibenia Scaeva |
I think a good faith, "we'll heal what we can now and the rest afterwards" sounds like a good plan
Zaijka Raven-born |
Identifying class levels/features for a rogue is a Knowledge (local) check, I believe, and she's not so good with that one. Best shot we'd have is a check from Zev, and we'd still have to see her in action for that. But let's face it, more help never hurts in general! And I'm down for the heal-what-we-can-now approach.
GM Neirikr |
I sort of spoiled it already: she has 2 levels of rogue on top of her racial HD. I think it's fair to just tell you, seeing as you're about to make a huge investment in order to fix her. Besides, you could just ask her, and she'd give you a detailed assessment of what she's capable of.
Zaijka Raven-born |
Nisany should be able to use the scroll without issue, but if not, I can give UMD a try. That's a big investment to take a UMD risk on, though.

UMD: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Not a class skill and not something I had any focus in. But there you go.
GM Neirikr cant remember Nisany is an Oracle ...hmm does that mean I can be whatever the situation calls for ;) I could be everything! Which is rather fitting for a Gnome. I shall be everything! Mwahahahah!

Factotum! Be a little of every class lol.
Zaijka Raven-born |
Zaijka has several hundred gold she could contribute, but I don't know if that would be enough to make a difference, haha.
Bernard Hammersmith |
I think we each have 500+ gp in the loot sheet? Maybe we can each chip in 300?
Then again, with our gp count so low, it's a huge party investment. Maybe we only get the scroll when we find a job that warrants it? Dunno. Happy to have her tag along for now and keep on keepin' on. Gotta deal with the summoned demon still, find the familiar, and clear out the last room on the top floor.
Packing computer up tomorrow! Updates will be by phone and infrequent for the next week!
GM Neirikr |
Well, let's put a pin in the shae issue for now. She's not going anywhere while she's in your debt, and there's still plenty of time in the module.
FYI I'm still here but I can't think of anything to contribute to the story at the moment. :/
There's not much going on right now, overall. You'll get your chance!
Vibenia Scaeva |
I think it's worth the investment for now. So do we want to leave now, get her restored as much as we can (1 neg level). Maybe call it a night and head back in the morning.
GM Neirikr |
You don't have its true name, unfortunately.
Honestly, Zaijka had the right idea: if you want to send it back to Hell without a fight, getting it to agree to a contract is not a bad idea. Deals with devils can be tricky, I know, but this guy is no Mephistopheles. Crafting a foolproof contract would be a Knowledge (planes) or a Linguistics check, or you could try Diplomacy and Intimidation to negotiate verbally. Knowing its identity could be helpful in the latter, since it would likely not want its name getting into the hands of another conjurer—that is, whoever purchases the journal at auction.
GM Neirikr |
Chewing on her lip, "Could you put in there that it has to go back to the plane it came from and never return here?"
"I could try," Zaijka replies, "but there is no guarantee that it would agree. It is not automatically bound by any contract we compose - it still has to elect to accept our terms."
Just in case it affects your decision, Chirit has already voiced his willingness to return home.
Anyway, with Zaijka's roll (plus a bonus from actually writing it out!), the contract is solid. I'll move us along shortly—let me know if you'd like to include a clause about Chirit having to go back to Hell upon its release. Otherwise, I'll assume you'll present the contract as it is.
Zaijka Raven-born |
Zaijka's willing to add that clause. Does it need a new roll or will it be part of the previous check? Feel free to roll for me if need be.
GM Neirikr |
No need. This would technically be an aid another on Nisany's part, but the contract is already good enough as it is. Adding that bit about leaving does affect the outcome, however, since otherwise it could have just turned invisible and flown off anywhere it wanted on the Material Plane, once freed.
Zaijka Raven-born |
So, weird question: can anyone see the post I just made, responding to Nisany and Lodo? I can't see it for some reason...
