Alase nods firmly. "Right. We need to help Myrna’s grandmothers. We should finish what we started in Storasta before we go racing off to Undarin. There’s still corruption festering here, and unfinished business in the bones beneath the barrowmounds. One battle at a time."

As the others discuss their next steps, Unafe's familiar—Sicrwydd, the small compsognathus—tilts his head sharply, letting out a soft chirr. You glance over just in time to see a ripple in the air, a subtle shimmer like heat rising from stone. An invisible orb hovers near Sicrwydd, no larger than an apple. A divination sensor.

Sana's eyes dart over as the sensor shows up, though she pretends not to notice at all, instead interjecting herself between the sensor and the book in the wall, leaning against it to cover the detail with her cloak. Right as Unafe motions to the orb, Sana frowns and doesn't bother to move from her spot. "So I guess we just can't talk about plans until the eavesdropper stops eavesdropping. Really... picking on a defenseless little chicken-thing, Vhang?" she asks, intentionally mispronouncing his name. "Did it feel clever to pick it, or do you always choose the weakest targets?" She couldn't deny that it was clever.

"And we can't feed false information, since the eavesdropper knows we're eavesdropping. Something to share for next time." she sends to Rue.

Before Beatrix has a chance to weigh in on the plans, Unafe notices a scrying sensor watching them. The Lieutenant definites wants to stay in Storasta, at least for now, and try to solve some of its problems. They did need to hunt down Vang, which seemed meant going to confront Carrock as well.

But first, they had to stop him from watching them. She unleashes a prayer of dispel, hoping to disrupt his sensor.

Beatrix casts dispel magic. It probably doesn't work.

Arueshalae's voice rings out in the heroes' minds, " Stay calm, don’t speak aloud of anything important. If he’s watching, he's also listening.”

Then, Beatrix raises her hand and utters a sharp, commanding phrase. Golden light coils through her fingers as she casts dispel. The magic flickers....but the shimmering orb holds steady.

"Cowards always peek through cracks,” says Alase dryly. Her eyes scan the sensor like it’s a mosquito daring to buzz through her campfire smoke. “If he’s watching us through that, he’s afraid. Too wounded to face us, and too proud to run. That’s all that little trick tells me.”

Something had been off with Hinagiku ever since the battle against the disguised hags. That something had left her somewhat unwell and introspective, more silent than usual. The mystery of the crypts, which would have normally elicited a sense of confusion, had simply passed through her mind unnoticed. She even had failed to notice the scrying sensor until it had been pointed out to her.

The only real action she can muster is to ready herself for battle, in case the scryer was preparing to move to them and strike.

“...There’s something there,” she murmurs at last, eyes narrowing. “Fifteen feet ahead. Invisible.”

Her hand floats into her guard posture, serene but ready to strike.

Hinagiku’s eyes narrow, her voice steady as she repeats her warning. “There’s movement. There.”

Then the space ahead of her pulses, and something breaks through.

A piercing hiss erupts from the darkness, like the breath of something foul exhaling after long silence. An instant later, a thin beam of putrid green light lances from the shadows. The very air around it warps as the ray cuts through space like a scalpel.

The beam strikes Unafe squarely in the chest with a sickening crack. A sound like splintering stone echoes as her armor blackens and her flesh begins to glow with a terrible, searing light. The ground beneath her feet crumbles into powder from the sheer force of the spell’s decay.

The smell of ozone and acid floods the chamber.

“Clan-Liege of the Demetae. You should have stayed in your burrow. Like the lizards you worship.”

A ripple in the air hints at an outline, but it disappears just as quickly. Xanthir Vang's voice floats lazily around the chamber, disembodied.

“You’ve made this... entertaining. Truly. But you forgot something important.”

“You’re not predators. You’re prey that thinks it’s evolved.”

There’s a rasp of laughter. The kind of laugh that means he’s not finished yet.

When Vang apparently shows up a second time to menace them, Myrna quickly expands in size, adopting a shield stance to hopefully block some of the next attacks directed at her companions. Without the ability to see Vang, Myrna casts her gaze wide and side-to-side, searching for any sign of the worm that walks. "You're a fool to come after us alone, Vang!" she calls, "And a coward to do so without showing your face!"

Sana had significantly misjudged what Vang was doing, and was preparing to start talking more trash when he launches his spell into the group... and particularly at Unafe. "Like I said before, I've got very little I can do to bring him down. I can probably try to do some nonsense tricksy stuff if I get the opportunity, but it's not gonna be a good time." she sends to Rue. Despite the fact it had brought her carefully laid plans for how to taunt Vang scurrying into the back of her mind, Myrna gives her a lay-up she couldn't possibly ignore.

"Oh come on, Riversoar. You know he can't do that. The worms already ate his face." she says, trying to sound nonchalant as she calls Amber to her side, leaving it floating over her shoulder. It bathes her allies' weapons and armor in an emerald sheen as she focuses in on the nearer of the invisible cultists. She hurls her starknife into the nearest one... aiming directly for the vitals with deadly precision... though she did have to thread the needle.

Ehren sets his jaw when the wizard's unmistakable voice fills the air with taunt. He resists the temptation to fire back, instead focusing on the telltale vibrations he feels against his soles, betraying the presence of additional invisible adversaries.

The archdruid releases his grasp on his healing staff and grabs the rod hanging off his belt. The air around him hums as he draws on Storasta's potent ley, attuned to his druidic magics, and channels it through the metamagic rod. A column of white-hot flames erupts from the ground, filling the dank ossuary with its radiant heat.

Ehren uses place magic and his metamagic rod to cast empowered flame strike (CL 15th). Everyone in the area takes 15d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 2, 4, 4, 6, 2, 4, 1, 2, 4, 6, 6, 6, 1) = 58 * 1.5 = 87 points of damage, split between fire and divine (Reflex DC 22 to halve).

The sickly green ray lances into Unafe’s chest, driving her back a half-step as raw disintegration magic sears through armor, scale, and sinew. Her muscles lock from the searing pain, her breath hitches, but she does not fall. Cracks of pale energy shimmer across her frame like spiderwebbed glass before fading.

Xanthir Vang's voice swirls around the chamber, triumphant and cruel. “Still standing? Good. I’d hate for you to miss what comes next.”

Sana then darts forward a single step and hurls Rainbow Sparkle towards one of the invisible adepts. The blade twists in midair, carving through the dark and striking true, right into the hidden gut of a cultist. A scream follows.

Across the chamber, Ehren slams the metamagic rod’s tip to the floor. A pillar of fire screams down from above, detonating amid the spectral shimmer of cloaked figures and the distant snarl of Vang’s laughter. The explosion tears through the chamber. Two of the Blackfyre Adepts, barely visible for a blink of time, vanish in a swirl of ash and charred leather. Vang’s own howl of pain rises above it all, a hideous, wet shriek.

Alase’s hand rises next, her forehead tattoo glowing faintly as she invokes a burst of ancestral magic. Arcane energy crackles around her fingers and jumps to each of her companions (except Hinagiku, who remains outside the radius) as the pulse of haste ripples through them.

“Hit those f%+&ers fast and hard,” Alase growls. “Don’t let him regroup.”

Meanwhile, Rue crouches low, her wings furled, eyes narrowing as she scans the gloom. “I can’t see them,” she sends, frustrated. “If someone can help me find them, point me, I'll end them.” Her starknife gleams in her hand, ready to strike.

Seeing that they were about to be in a battle for their lives, Beatrix decides now is the time for her most powerful spells. She calls out, "Iomedae, make me the instrument of your justice!" She grasps her holy symbol, raises her hand up high, and emits a flash of holy light. A moment later, her eyes burn with a righteous fury, feathery wings sprout from her back, and her skin takes on the pallon of polished bronze. She looks towards the area where the Archdruid's pillar of fire had appeared, ready for more. She couldn't see their assailants, but she could still help.

Beatrix casts angelic aspect. For 10 minutes, she has DR 5/evil, resist acid/cold 10, low-light vision, and a fly speed of 30.

Unafe gives a honk or rage and pain as much of her body crumbles to dust.

Following her allies' guidance, and the line from where the the green blast originated, she swings with hasted enthusiasm at the spot where she believes Vang to be. As she does, she says a silent prayer to her ancestors, to help her fists strike true.

Focused on the Ossuary and the engravings within, Yui fails to notice Vang's casting until he's unleashed the spell. Reaching quickly into her pack she pulls out a scroll of heal and extends it towards Ehren. "Here, for Unafe," she calls out to the Archdruid.

Drawing upon her heritage as the daughter of a divine nogitsune, she grants her allies limited premonition, making it easier for them to defend themselves against Vang's magic. She then closes her eyes and begins to focus on sensing magic around them, beginning to weave a counterspell to negate the wizard's next spell.

Mv Act: Draw scroll of heal from bag; Free Act: Mv 5' forward; Std Act: Activate Aura of Prescience, 30' radius, +2 insight bonus to attack, damage, saves and skill checks for allies within radius.

A snarl tears from Unafe’s throat as she charges. She throws a desperate series of punches – the first connects with nothing. The second slices through empty air. Her third meets the same frustrating end.

Her last punch, driven by a surge of fury and pain, finally connects. What she connects with feels all wrong. She doesn't feel solid resistance of bone or the give of flesh, but an oily, unnatural feeling. Her fist pulls right through it, her hand enveloped in a sickening sensation of a thousand tiny slimy things packed too closely together, shifting and churning. Vang does not wince, there is no gasp of pain. The form pulls away from her with a faint rustle, the movement quickly swallowed by the shadows.

Then, from further away, a voice unfurls, cold and dry. “Still flailing in the dark,” Xanthir Vang’s voice drifts from the shadows. “Striking out, hoping you might hit something. Is that truly all you have left?”

The air in the corridor shimmers, and with the distortion comes a pale green haze, creeping low over the stones. It rises like breath from a grave, thick and acrid, reeking of something like venom and decay. Unafe instinctively draws back as the edges of the mist sting her nose and throat.

Vang’s voice drifts from the unseen depths of the fog. "You never saw the whole board, did you? You’re so focused on me, you can’t see that the game is already over. This world was lost long before you ever found me."

Sana:

"Sorry, Rue, priorities." Sana says as she abandons her previous plans, and immediately opts to evacuate her allies. "Let Alase and Beatrix know they can teleport to me by moving into Amber's light again. I'll get them back the way we came." Sana sends to Rue, to avoid Vang knowing where they'd gone or how.... hopefully anyway.

Follow the yellow arrow on the map to find Sana! It heads east through the current hallway to start. Amber is floating over Yui. Sana is immune to poison, but I rolled Fort anwyay, just in case. Let me know if I need for her to take the 4 con damage and I'll add it to my sheet.

As soon as Vang begins to cast again, Yui is ready. She had been too focused on their exploration to react to the disintegrate, but she wasn't about to allow Vang to succeed in casting a second time.

"I am glad we get a chance to continue our duel, Vang," she says as she turns to face him and in an instant unleashes a dispel magic to counter his spell, bolstering it with additional arcane power to ensure its success.

"We can focus on you and the end of the world, Vang!" shouts Myrna, although she looks just a little dumb because she doesn't know where exactly to shout towards -- it's pretty echoy in this chamber, and Vang was invisible at the moment. "Contrary to your beliefs, you're not that big or important!"

Then she breaks into a kickass children's song about crushing the worms that are eating your fruits at your farm. She adapts the sing-song tune of the song into a heavier, angrier tone by bringing out her drum and banging out a driving rhythm and by angrily shouting the words, 'We all love to squash the tiny little worm, the tiny little worm, the tiny little worm.'

Once again, Ehren is enveloped by the familiar, acrid stench of cloudkill. Only this time, as the green murk billows over him, he is not only unharmed but unimpeded, his crystalline vision piercing through the fog, to an extent, at least. Conscious of his surroundings, the druid reaches out to take the scroll offered by Yui and drops his rod, unfurling the rolled parchment. He reads from the scroll aloud before placing a hand on Unafe's leg, suffusing her with an immense rush of positive energy.

Ehren casts heal (CL 11th) from the scroll on Unafe, restoring 110 hit points and removing her ability damage.

A wave of silver-blue force radiates from Yui, and the green mist recoils and thins as if hit by a strong, clean wind. As the last of the poisoned mist clears, Myrna’s drumbeat echoes in the relative silence. Alase uses the moment to mutter a quiet Sarkorian prayer, crushing a shard of onyx between her fingers. There is a brief flash before her eyes, and her vision shifts, washing the world in faint, spectral hues.

She scans the battlefield, but her view is blocked. Unafe stands directly in her line of sight, and between her broad shoulders, her shifting stance, and the residual haze, Alase cannot get a clear view of the ossuary’s far corners where Vang might have fled.

Alase frowns, her voice tight with frustration. “I can’t see him from this angle. Point him out if you get eyes on him.”

Myrna’s drumming echoes through the ossuary, her voice rising with the defiant beat. But another sound begins to thread itself beneath her song; a different voice, low, cold, and deliberate. The words are Abyssal, the cadence precise and practiced.

Seeing the cloud disperse just as quickly as it had shown up... and not seeing Vang fly in her direction, Sana darts forward to where she'd last seen enemies... and finds no one. She quickly darts around the corners, searching for their foes.

Unafe looks left and right, and quickly realizes that none of her allies know where Vang went.

Nervous, she asks, Hallit: << Goryon, the Worm has disappeared, but we believe he hasn't gone far because he is still casting spells. My allies can see invisible foes and could hear a mouse's whisker twitch, and yet we can find no sign of him. Is there anything you could do to help us locate him? >>

Not being prepared for this situation, Beatrix steps up closer to some more of her allies and casts her gaze around. Without knowing where Vang was or what would happen next, Beatrix justs reaches out to touch Unafe. The Sarkorian barbarian was their greatest warrior, and if anyone could wrench Vang from invisibility and this mortal coil at the same time, it would be her. She imbues Unafe with a bit of good energy.

Beatrix uses Touch of Good. Unafe gets a +5 bonus to attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws for 1 round.

Unafe gasps with relief as the Archdruid works the magic of the scroll, and the charred gaping holes that had disintegrated in her flesh are remade.

Then she feels Beatrix's own divine protection wash over her. Hallit: "Thank you both!"

Sana doesn't come back around the alcove, having actually found their enemies hiding where she'd expected them. She briefly considers the option of being tricksy... but instead opts for maximum annoyance.

She tilts her head in time to Myrna's music as she comes to a stop just on the side of the alcove. "Oh, hello there. Have you seen an apex predator? All I see is a worm hiding right in the middle of a hole."

Unafe listens with real wonder as Goryon explains what her ancestor can do, but as she considers the best course she hears Anna announce Vang's location.

Falling back on what she does best, Unafe lopes over there in big strides that barely touch the ground. When she sees where Anna is pointing, she swings at the empty-looking spot...trusting her ancestors to guide her fist, while Myrna's and Beatrix's magic fills her with a surge of power.

“Child of broken Sarkoris,” Vang replies, his words slithering out from a dozen invisible mouths, “call me ‘worm’ if it comforts you. Even the smallest maggot devours corpses...and I shall dine on the bodies of nations.”

Amidst the din of Myrna’s drumming, Rue's voice sounds in the heroes' minds: “Anna has eyes on them. They're in the center alcove on the south wall. Vang and an adept. If you push north now, you’ll have them cornered.”

Unafe’s fist slams into what should be empty air but connects with something wrong: a writhing mass of worms. The impact sends some of them scattering with a wet hiss, and disgusting bug goo sprays across the stone floor. The swarm shudders from the blow around her fist as she withdraws.

She can hear a voice: “Hmph. Pawns of the gods...find me if you can. Or... don't. The Locust King’s glorious dawn will rise regardless.”

Sana:

To Sana’s magical sight, the invisible wizard is a shimmering, writhing cloud. She watches as the mass quivers, and then the air around it seems to bend. The whole writhing mass vanishes with a muted pop, abandoning his (also invisible) accomplice to die.

Unafe leaves Vang in critical condition, but then he simply teleports away somehow.

Myrna sights the spot Rue had indicated and springs forward, her warhammer raised high. It comes crashing down on empty air. Sparks fly from the flagstones where the weapon makes impact.

Sana:

Even as the Myrna moves, Sana sees the adept already moving. The figure slides sideways, slipping between Unafe and Myrna before halting just out of their reach. She hears a murmured phrase, and then the air around the adept distorts.

A ripple, like shimmering heat, appears then tears open. The adept simply steps through it. The distortion snaps shut, leaving nothing behind.

If Sana has 10' of reach, she could, maybe, AoO the cultist before he leaves. Likewise, Yui can sense the spellcasting.

Sana reaches back and grips her parasol's handle, using it to tilt her quiver as she slips her starknife into it. With practiced ease, she flicks her parasol off of her quiver and brings it upwards in a golf swing towards the cultist as they attempt to flee.

Myrna comes to a stop, taking a few deep breaths. She's disappointed by her miss, but figures its fine. The enemies, despite their surprise ambush, had fled before her group's strength quite quickly.

"Well, it seems we're not safe here," she adds, "And that we came here for next to nothing. Let's hope Vang hasn't figured out that the Lexicon isn't here yet either."

She shakes her head to Yui's question. "I don't think I can follow Vang if he decides to teleport away. I think we should find a place to rest, now, and decide our next steps."

Sana pivots as the adept slips past, her parasol sweeping up in a tight arc. The strike lands solidly--ribs crack, acid hisses, and a surge of power drives through the full blow.

His spell breaks mid-gesture. A breath wheezes from him as he staggers back, clutching at his ribs, reeling yet still unseen to anyone but her.

The adept is wounded. Sana interrupts his spellcasting.

Unafe keeps an eye on the transparent spot where Sana's parasol lands a resounding whack, and reaches out to grab and restrain the invisible adept (continuing to count on her ancestors to guide her hands in the right direction).

As she grabs him, she snarls. "Your boss abandoned you to die, and you're not going anywhere now."

Myrna approaches the, uh, invisible cultist that's all tied up. As Unafe leaves the poor fellow on the ground, she looms over him. "Alright, buddy," she addresses towards what she hopes is his face.

"We can do this the easy way: You give us what we want, and my friend here snaps your neck. Or we can do this the hard way, which is you try to resist and we make your life hell for as long as we think we have time for before my friend here snaps your neck." She crouches down on her haunches to get closer, and hefts her hammer into her palm. "So, what'll it be?"
