Bakko |
Bakko picks one of the cure potions and the tanglefoot bag. He only has his sling to deal with ranged threats, so he figured at least he'd have something to help the group if needed.
Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
I have a rope. - Bakko said, looking at the hole by Ilathor's side - We could try climbing with it. If we get someone on the other side, then it becomes more possible to pass. I'm not really a very good jumper, if we're wondering that possibility...
He looked to the others.
And I don't really imagine what to do about the bear...
Zeldana Bordana |
Zeldana pockets the scrolls of entangle and gust of wind and the wand of cure light wounds with a satisfied smile.
Later when the group reaches the pit, she looks at the others in puzzlement...
Zeldana Bordana |
Zeldana attempts to cross the pit by climbing sideways on the cave walls...
Climb: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
She hazards a short walk pass the pit to ensure no enemies are waiting in ambush...
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
GM Ietsuna |
Zeldana makes it across to the other side of the pit. Her search of the area just beyond does not find anything waiting in ambush, but does find a plank which is long enough to reach over the pit.
Perrine Ravella |
”There’s something in the pit though. I am pretty light...you think you strong lot could tie a rope to me and lower me down? I could check it out and you could pull me right back up,”
Ilathor Valmaxian |
"A prime proposal! Please fetch it and join me on the other side!" Ilathor encourages as he walks over the plank to the other side.
Winnie the Hoot |
After Zeldana puts the plank down, Winnie hurriedly rejoins with her mistress, crossing the pit with a few minor anxious groans.
Bakko |
Bakko waits for Zeldana to put the plank down, and then finally moves with the others to the other side.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 Do I have to roll to cross over the plank? Not sure
I can hold and lower you down, Perrine. - he says, already on the other side, pulling his rope and preparing to help the gnome.
GM Ietsuna |
No need to roll to cross the plank. It is wide enough to not be overly taxing.
Bakko makes it over and helps lower Perrine down to the bundle of cloth. Perrine comes back up, the bundle in hand.
Ilathor Valmaxian |
"An opportunity for magical investigation!" Ilathor answers back.
The elf reaches out with his mind, looking past reality and gazes upon the intricacies of magic itself. "If there is anything note worthy about this cloth, I shall uncover it!"
________
If needed:
Spellcraft (Identify Magic Item): 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 10 + 2 = 27
GM Ietsuna |
Perrine unfurls the bundle and discovers that it is a cloak. The fabric is a fine homespun and it is a deep cobalt blue in colour.
Ilathor Valmaxian |
"Marvelous, that cloak will help the wearer resist magic, disease, and other nasty effects they may risk being subject to!" Ilathor explains. "Let us be on our way, there is surely more to find within this hole in the wall!"
GM Ietsuna |
About 50 ft. after the pit, the tunnel curves and you find a plank big enough to span the pit. The tunnels continue on, leading deeper beneath the Kortos Mounts until they eventually open into a large cavern. What must have once been beautifully carved reliefs and inscriptions have since weathered heavily, their features dulled and softened to the point that it is hard to distinguish what each once depicted. A wide tunnel exits the cavern on its far side, and blue-burning torches line the passageway’s walls.
The carvings here are different in style from the petroglyphs found elsewhere. It seems like there might have been a dozen carvings at some point, but only four are still decipherable. As best you can tell, they are images from the History and Future of Humanity, the principle holy text of Aroden.
If you speak Aquan or Azlanti, you get a cumulative +2 bonus on the above checks.
These parables are slightly different than those that appear in the known version of the History and Future of Humanity, suggesting that these might represent an earlier version of the work.
Even though Aroden disappeared over a century ago, these caves store a hint of his divine magic (like a wand with a single charge left) that can impart a minor blessing to those who perform a short series of rituals based on the parables.
Zeldana Bordana |
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
"Pathfinders! This relief depicts 'The Merchant', seen weighing and trading coins of different sizes. I believe this might be a reference to Aroden's holy text’s proverb that peace brings trade and prosperity to all people. What about the rest of you? have you found anything?"
Ilathor Valmaxian |
Ilathor presses a wand against his temple and mutters a few words. "Ancient hieroglyphs? MAKE WAY!" Ilathor says as he pushes past anyone in his way. "Azlanti! FAAASCINAAATIIIING!" he sings as peruses the carvings.
"Indeed, that is certainly the Merchant! And here, look! The Scholar! Yet different from how it it represented in more modern depictions! WHAT A FIND!" Ilathor quickly pulls out his journal and begins scribing away the writings, including sketches of the carvings before him.

Perrine nodded at the others’ descriptions of The Merchant. She didn’t recognize the other two, but her eyes brightened at the last display. ”This last one is the Soldier, I believe. That lantern is supposed to shine light to the darkest corners of the world to banish the shadows! This find has to be quite important. We might just end up famous,” she grinned.
Asarnil Veluvien |
Asarnil follopws the others and studies the carvings...
Knowledge(history): 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 2 = 19
"That's what I surmise as well..." Asarnil nods, confirming Ilathor's words.
Bakko |
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Bakko looks carefully to the hieroglyphs, but can't say much more than his companions. He pulls some coins from his pocket, looking at how the Merchant seems to be manipulating them, and tries to do similarly.
GM Ietsuna |
The soft light of the surrounding fungus mixes with the flickering glow of the nearby torches to reveal a grand chamber. A large pool of water along the chamber’s southern edge reflects the blue and green radiance to illuminate the massive stalactites that cling to the ceiling overhead. Two other tunnels branch off from this area, leading to the east and west.
Rising up from the pool is a column of rock with steeply sloped sides and a flat top, as if someone had sawn off the top of a massive stalagmite. A miniature city carved from this same stone occupies nearly the entire surface. Tiny trinkets such as ancient coins, polished semiprecious stones, and ornately braided loops of string are scattered throughout the diorama, and pale cave frogs clamber atop it. The smooth cavern floor is covered in gravel and pebbles along the edge of the pool, and several foot-long centipedes prowl among the gravel in their search for prey.
This cavern is not unoccupied though. A lone gillmen kneels in the water, seeming thoughtful and unaware of your presence.
The carvings are in the room with your tokens. This description is for the next room. Map is up
Zeldana Bordana |
Zeldana and Winnie approach the gillman and wave in a friendly manner. "Hello Sir. How is your day thus far? Can we rest here and inspect this miniature city? is this a shrine of some sort?"
Winnie the Hoot |
"Mmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaargnnnoof... oooof..." agrees Winnie, who cannot resist the compulsion to step forward and splash her front paws into the cool cave pond! The bear cub playfully splashes around and tries to gobble a frog or two...
GM Ietsuna |
With a start the Gillman opens his eyes as Zeldana gets close. He stands impassively, looking at Zeldana.
He seems rather ‘indifferent’ to you so far, but a Diplomacy or Intimidate check could change that.
Perrine Ravella |
Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
”Look, he has a matching robe! Maybe this is his. I’m gling to offer it to him,” she tells the others.
She approaches the gillman. ”Hi, I’m Perrine. Is this yours? I found it in that big ole hole back there,” she offers.
Diplomacy 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Zeldana Bordana |
"Ahem... yes... what she said..." stammers Zeldana, trying (poorly) to assist Perrine.
Diplomacy to Assist Perrine: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (9) - 2 = 7
Asarnil Veluvien |
Aid another (Diplomacy): 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (14) - 2 = 12
Asarnil scoffs at Perrine's approach and chimes in, his typical arrogance showing as usual:"Well met, honorable and wise... creature. We, as members of the Pathfinder's Society, would like to ask for your insight on these... fascinating locales..."
Ilathor Valmaxian |
"Oooooohhhh look its a Gillman!" Ilathor approaches shortly after witnessing Zeldana hasn't been assaulted. "I am Ilathor Valmaxian, currently of the Pathfinder Society! As my companions have alluded to, we are here to briefly survey this subterranean cavern!"
________
Diplomacy (Aid Another) vs Perrine, DC 10: 1d20 ⇒ 18 I think that puts us at a 14 so far!
Bakko |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
We mean you no harm. - says Bakko. He's terrible at anything that requires any charisma from his part, yet he tries to aid by showing no intentions of engaging the creature. Maybe the Pathfinders can make a new friend.
Diplomacy (Aid Another): 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (15) - 3 = 12 Yes, this just happened
GM Ietsuna |
"Greetings, Pathfinders," the gillman finally responds after the round of introductions, "I am Uori, and you have entered a cave sacred to my people. It was once sacred to Aroden as well, but the dead god's influence has faded from this place as those carvings have weathered and melted away.
"Soon, his influence shall be gone completely. If you wish to perform any rituals to the dead god of humanity, I suggest you do so soon."
You may attempt the Arodenite rituals if desired.
Zeldana Bordana |
Zeldana tells Winnie to sneak on the frog to scare them.

You feel a small amount of warmth radiate inside each of you that fades as quickly as it comes.
Shepherd ritual complete. Completing this ritual grants each of the PCs a +2 insight bonus on a single check made to perform the aid another action in the next 24 hours.
Perrine Ravella |
”Does anyone have a lantern or a good source of light? We might be able to perform the Soldier blessing about shedding the light on the city!”. If no one has a lantern, she will light a torch and maneuver it all around the makeshift town, trying to be sure all the shadows were illuminated.
Ilathor Valmaxian |
"MY TUUUURN!" Ilathor announnces as he splashes through the water, his robe seemingly blending with the water as it makes contact.
The elf pulls out his spellbook and opens it up to one of the earlier pages. "They will get a kick out of this for sure!" he starts as he begins to exposit extensive arcane formula to the cave frogs.
GM Ietsuna |
The frogs looks enlightened and you think you may even see a minor crackle of arcane energy on the webbed hand of one of the frogs, or was it a trick of the light. Anyway, you do not feel any different though.
GM Ietsuna |
The light shed on the city seems to complete another ritual. The warmth flows through you.
Soldier ritual complete. Completing this ritual grants each PC a +1 insight bonus to AC if she has taken damage since the start of her last turn.
Ilathor Valmaxian |
Deflated for only a moment when his lecture does not garner any divine results, Ilathor leaps on the invitation. "YYYEEESSS!" Ilathor stows his spellbook and grabs a frog. "Look at me, I am a froggy banker! Watch me stack my money!" he says in a froggy voice while manipulating the frog's arms to move the money into neat stacks. "Ha! Human gods, so droll!"
His ego momentarily restored, he releases the frog and exits the water, content to scribe excessively detailed and explicit notes on what he has seen so far.
GM Ietsuna |
Despite his entertaining display of amphibian manipulation Ilathor's efforts with the money fail to yield any results in the ritual department.
Ilathor Valmaxian |
Lol, bummer. I don't have any other ideas for those aspects. Anyone else have some they want to try or shall we get on our way?
Bakko |
Bakko crosses his arms on the back and stays immobile, hard to distinct from a common stone statue. He doesn't seem particularly interested in the rituals, despite the obvious excitation of his companions.
Perrine Ravella |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
”Are you sure the rest of you actually want to be Pathfinders? We have a chance to experiment on this wonderful altar, which might not have seen a Pathfinder’s touch ever and none of you want to try it other than Ilathor and myself? I can tell you who is going to have top billing in my journal entry, and it’s not going to be most of you,” Perrine says in a huff.
She loooks for something that might measure the weight of the coins, so that she could put them into equal stacks.
Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Asarnil Veluvien |
"There's a difference between experimenting and making fools of ourselves my dear gnome-lady..." comments Asarnil, not sounding amused at all.
No ideas about what to do here, sorry
GM Ietsuna |
Perrine does not see any scales or anything that could readily be used to weigh coins. The glyph depicted people weighing and trading coins in the city
Perrine Ravella |
Perrine takes one of the silver coins, and puts one of her own current silver coins into the city, wondering if trading coins would do the trick. If not, she coins into different buildings in the city, trying to trade their spots all around the city.
GM Ietsuna |
The warm feeling flows through you all once again as Perrine takes a penny and leaves a penny.
Merchant ritual complete. Completing the ritual grants all of the PCs a +1 competence bonus on Appraise checks to determine the value of objects and on Spellcraft checks made to identify magic items.
Ilathor Valmaxian |
"Astounding Perrine! Perhaps I shall purchase your literature after all! You are clearly adept at these ritualistic tasks and I have much to learn from you," Ilathor announces as he continues to scribe. What an astute gnome, I shall have to maintain correspondence with her.
