"Well, those squid goblins down at the cove might know where our kidnapped crew-mate was taken..." points out Vagantem, who tries to stow her portion of the liberated booty in a variety of pouches.

Xasay holds up the ring.
"This is enchanted, alright! I can't tell what the enchantment is, exactly, though - anyone else?"

GMG |

Emmet does not notice anything happening when he puts on the ring and he can also take it off again.
Noticing that night is falling you decide to rest for the night and head out in the morning. The night passes without any incident and you are glad you sleep next to fresh water.
The next morning you head out for the waters where you saw the Grindylows playing. After a few hours you reach the high cliffs that surround a deep cove churning with dark seawater. At water level you notice a dark hole leading into the cliffs.
The cliff is 40 feet above sea level. There is no way down.

"There doesn't seem to be any rocks under the surface of the water in the cove." Tori informs the others, "It might be safe to dive down, or we can see if there is another way in."

GMG |

Give me a swim check if you decide to go in...
You do not see another way down and Tori notices that the ocean is not exactly calm in the cove, although she has seem rougher seas.

GMG |

You can follow the stone for quite some distance below the waters before you loose sight of it. more than 30 feet
The others meanwhile have found a way to scale the cliff, it seems you have two options to go down...
Jump: Acrobatics check to jump clear from the cliff face or Swim to make the perfect dive.
Climb: Climb check.

GMG |

Vagantem starts to climb down. About halfway down the cliff he takes a moment to catch his breath. Looking to his left he sees a couple of nests at 20 feet above the water. The nests are built on a narrow ledge beneath a steep rocky overhang, making them impossible to see from above.
In the nest he notices eight tiny insectoid creatures. They each have two pairs of bat wings, a tangle of thin legs, and a needle-sharp proboscis.

Vagantem calls back up.
"Odd looking creatures here... look like insects with two pairs of bat wings, lots of little legs and sharp noses..."
She looks around, incase the parents of the small creatures are around.

"Sounds interesting!"
Xasay follows Vagantem down...

"Those beaks look sharp... but they are not attacking me at the moment.." calls up Vagantem.
"May be best to look for a way down that avoids the nest though, they might be poisonous... everything else on this island seems to be .. well figuratively."

GMG |

Xasay knows that these are stirges, vicious, blood-drinking swamp pests that prey on wild animals, livestock, and unwary travelers. While weak individually, swarms of the creatures are capable of draining a man dry in minutes, leaving only a desiccated husk in their wake.
A lot of stirges carry disease. Their preferred method to feed is to attach themselves to their victim and drain blood, using their proboscis.

Vagantem, now there is definite danger (apart from the fall) in sight, climbs back up and puts her armour on, she will then climb back down again if nobody has spotted a better way down.

"Well, that sounds gruesome. Maybe we can scare them off or at least drag them up here where we have a better chance of not falling to our deaths?"

Not sure if I can make that particular roll without seeing the stirges, but if so, she'll reveal what's under the spoiler above.

GMG |

Tori: you go by the description of their behavior from your teammates. So yes, you can make that roll.

![]() |

"I think the stirges are just waiting for us to make ourselves easy targets by climbing down below them. We should probably throw rocks or something to get them to come to us after all." Tori advises the group as she looks for something nearby to throw at the general area of the nest.

![]() |

"Alright, somethin' to do!", Scratcher happily looking for a rock and seeing if he can bean one of the oversized mosquitoes.
Not sure how you want to adjudicate this GM, but here's a die roll just in case

GMG |

Although the rocks that you throw done all land on the ledge that protect the stirges you make enough noise to really annoy the beasts. They swarm out of their protection and are heading your way!

Yes I do - anything seriously wrong with that in this situation?

The stirges get to act before you finish casting. They will probably be all over you.... and not in that perfect fireball formation anymore ;-)

I realize - but it can only affect 4 HD of creatures anyways, and automatically selects the creatures with the fewest HD in the area first. I should be able to take out a decent few.
