Hello to everyone, I should have the intro post in the gameplay thread by tonight so we can begin in earnest tomorrow. A few things about me: I have been gming pathfinder for 7 years and starfinder since it came out. This will be my first attempt at gming a pbp but I’m confident it will go great.
To those of you have have read/gmed the adventure, I’m not going to ask you to be quiet about decision making, I expect you to play your character just make sure player and character knowledge are clearly separated.
A bit on posting styles-
If you see a post that looks like this:
You shouldn’t look because I am still editing the post!
Another note on spoilers, please only look at spoilers that have your name, you have rolled a dice expression that beats the listed DC, or if another player who did either of the previously mentioned things explains it.
When rolling dice feel free to add your own personal flavor but please make it obvious what kind of damage you are doing and whether you are targeting KAC or EAC.
Example:
laser rifle: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 vs EAC
pew pew: 1d8 ⇒ 3 fire
Lastly if you haven’t read Painlords PbP guide, I strongly recommend it. If anyone else has any advice or suggestions feel free as long it meets the community standards =D

Checking in and looking forward to the game! Will get my stat line set up in a bit...

A note about tactics, I'm planning on running a reach weapon (like a Pike for starters) in two hands and a melee weapon (like a Gauntlet) for adjacent opponents as an attempt at battlefield control. Probably take Step Up shortly.
If we're in combat I'll go ahead and include a spoiler at the bottom of every post including an attack roll for any potential AoOs that may incur so as to speed up gameplay (rather than waiting for me to post my AoO).

Intro post is up in gameplay, feel free to interact with each other and once everyone has posted something in the gameplay thread we will begin!

Important points of order!!!
In an effort to keep the story going, if 3 people agree on a course of action, that’s the course I assume the group, unless it is a major plot point. For combats, we will be doing group initiatives to speed things up.
If you haven’t posted in 72 hours I may bot you for use of skills and/ or spells based on your past personality. Also on the topic of botting, if you haven’t posted within 24 hours of your turn I will bot a post for you in accordance with what you’ve done in the past. As a good friend once said,
“everything is more important than dnd, life comes first”
So if you know your not gonna be able to post, I completely understand, let us know in the discussion.
lastly, I anticipate the posting rate could get high so make sure to check the thread daily at minimum, I know some of us will post multiple times a day if possible but please everyone try to post at least once a day, even it’s early morning Monday and late night Tuesday.
Final lastly, I don’t consider myself a rules expert so if I guff something up please let me know in the discussion and I will fix it accordingly.

friendly sauce, if my character wants to purchase a bottle of rum, how much would you say that costs? And also a lifetime supply of whupee cushions, stink bombs, and handshake buzzers, what would you say the price would be (for RP purposes, no mechanical effects intended...)?
Handsome Gob |
Awesome! Thanks, I missed that in the rules. Looks like the last little bit of credits I have left is going to alcohol!!

I set up a skill matrix for the party if you need to check someone's skill or plan leveling or starship roles.
My first feat is skill synergy Computers/Engineering. Would it be possible to change it to Survival/Engineering since there seems to be a glut in the computer technician market?

@BNW, ya that’s fine. I’m generally ok with minor rebuilds as long as they are done by the second encounter. I want you guys to gel well.
I’m working on a post right now so it should be here within the hour.
Awesome skill matrix btw.
Oh feel free to discuss how you guys want to handle loot. If no one cares I usually default to dividing loot by #of party members plus 1, that way everyone gets an even slice of the credits and a nice party loot can build up to pay for anything you all need.
Haath Chaar |
I enjoy splitting everying Nth+1. If we can start keeping track of that now then any future replacements can begin with an equal amount of credits as everyone else.
Item distribution as per party need. If someone uses a found item and later sells it, those credits get split Nth+1 as though the party had initially just sold it when found.

I was actually just looking at the starship combat roles, and... wow. That's, ah... that's a lot to take in. I think it's doable, and I dare say, with PBP, it might be a bit easier to organize. Everyone just posts what they're doing during that specific phase.
My only problem with this is that it seems like a lot on the GM, managing a whole crew along with the player team...
It's just... a lot.
Then again, I could just be saying that because it's all new to me.
Haath Chaar |
I had to houserule Starship Combat rules for my home group that everyone could enjoy. That being said, I told them it'll only happen once a book.
I'm personally in favor of skipping it all together. It's the weakest subsystem of Starfinder, I feel. But if others are interested, I'm game.
I guess Haath Chaar would have to be Gunner, at +2.
GM Friendly Sauce |
I personally like the starship combats and think they would be ok since everyone can post in bulk turns
Edit: Maps link should be live and the slide should be editable. Egg, I used the basic Wychwyrd until you post a portrait. Ford if you want to select an image for C4M we can add that as well. Also Egg and Justin can you please put your stats in your header?
@Corrik, it’s why the society is so keen on getting more agents. TLDR version is about 80% of their forces went somewhere and just disappeared.

Both gangs go in the suprise round so ya, the other gang will go, then you.

How bout somewhere in the middle- enemies without rp can be stabalized within con mod/ rounds.
GM Friendly Sauce |
Yes, assume they will provide at least partial cover.
Also for loot, my current real life uses a system to help compensate the poor resale value in starfinder. Since items resale at 10% of their full value, if you find a loot item that costs 1000 credits brand new then a character can ‘buy’ it from the party loot for 10% of its full cost. It’s worked out nicely for us so if you as a group want to do that go ahead.

Haath: Handsome Gob will probably zap EVERYONE with a handshake buzzer! But I'm sure they'll bond soon over liquor!
BNW: Yes, very useful matrix! I filled out some of Handsome's details.
friendly sauce: Yup, I'm fine with that loot process! As for starship combat, I enjoy it face to face, but it's cumbersome in PBP. I've run/played starship combat in PBP about a half dozen times and in my opinion, if we go exactly by the rules, it can take almost a week to get through a single round. I use a compressed but not exactly by the book method in order to keep starship combat turnaround to one round per 24 hours. I can describe my procedure if you like. I'm also okay with skipping starship combat. Happy either way!

Go ahead, I’m all ears for something to speed it up

I was about to type it out when I realized it's already in my GM profile under the starship combat spoiler.. Silly me!
Also, I tend to end combat once the players have scored two net critical thresholds more than the NPC ship. Playing all the way till the NPC ship is disabled would take a very long time.
To see how this works in practice, here's an actual example of how I've run it. It means a whole lot more organizational work for the GM but it does speed things up. Beware, spoilers for 1-04 Cries From the Drift in this link!

friendly sauce, I noticed your NPC slides only just now. Well done!!! Hahaha!!
