"You know, that is none of our business, so no? And it is for the last few days with this curfew thing. It's not like we have a lot of experience yet. But I guess he'll get out this week." the guard elaborates.

After only a few minutes being stuck in the Aulamaxa manor, Meliandri decides she's bored. Her visit with Pellius and conversation with her mother aside, it's been a slow day. A trip to the coffeehouses of Villegre could be just the cure to that, though. Dressed in clothing that's more casual and less suited for the manor, Megs sets off into the afternoon, heading for the Long Roads coffeehouse.

Saul sighs in frustration, wondering if that is enough information to break even on this case, as he dumps the two gold over to the guards. As they leave, he turns to Alamara.
"I guess that is our day's work. Do you want to come back tomorrow? Maybe we can figure out some way to get eyes on the castle. If Shensen and Hawke are locked up in there though, I don't think we are getting them out, not without an army."
Saul proceeds over to the academy to let the Professor know everything that has transpired. "Salonius is definitely in the Holding House, ma'am. He was caught outside after curfew, we checked it out, along with the bird, who saw him again. Then we talked to some guards and they confirmed it, he is in there, locked up, and probably will get released in a few days. But the goons we spoke to didn't know enough to give an exact date. It sounds like it just depended on the mood of the jail boss."
Saul pauses for a second, and then says, "I hate to bring it up, but a deal is a deal. Can I have the two gold payment for this information?"
With that business taken care of, Saul ambles back to his office. It was a long day... much of it was sitting, but it required sharp attention. Sauls stretches out his legs and rubs his temples.
Case of the Missing Botanist. Solved? Hard to say. This city is going to Hell. I wish I could say that all the pieces of the puzzle are falling into place, but it feels more like someone has kicked a stained glass window and is moving onto the next one.
Alamara starts when the guards mention that Shensen is possibly in Kintargo Castle. It is all she can do to not set off for that place at a run now, but Saul Gibson has gotten them this far, so she decides to trust him a little more.
"Saul Gibson, I will return tomorrow and see how we get into Castle Kintargo. Or at least confirm the presence of our friends inside." She turns to go, but remembers something and calls back to the sleuth. "No armor tomorrow either?" She is hopefully he will disagree, but predicts there is much more sleuthing to do before force will be of much help.
She returns to the laundry, keeping her hands busy with the work, while her mind wanders over all that has transpired over the last few days. The intrusion of the new Grand Mayor, this Thrune, has upset her life greatly, along with the lives of, it seems, many others. How to make it all go back to the way it was before? That question burns in her mind, inspiring all kinds of deeds of derring-do in her imagination, but none of them seem quite practical so far.
"I'll just keep watching and learning, and look for the right opportunity to set these despot back." she thinks, a small smile playing at the corners of her mouth.

Peeko curious, and enjoying the thrill of being a spy decides to follow the guards home, curious as to where they are being barracked. He flits between rooftops and chimneys prepared to drop his pursuit instantly if his targets show a hint of suspicion.

Peeko follows the guards for some hours, but it is not very interesting. The get lunch, some beer, do some minor shopping and go back to the Holding House. There the next pair of guards leave as these two come back.
Alamara gets scolded by her mother for leaving her most of the day alone with all the work.
The Long Roads Coffeehouse is located in Villegre, just northeast of the park. The establishment caters to an eclectic mix of customers, serving coffee and food to bright-eyed students of the Villegre and delivering fancy desserts and pastries to the noble estates in the Green. It is known as much for its traditional halfling fare as for its lovable proprietor, Laria Longroad.
Meliandri enters, looks around and decides for a table to sit at. (I leave it to you to decide if you want to sit alone, or find some friends here) A charming halfling serves your table this day.
Just as Saul is alone again and leans back in his chair to relax a bit, there is a knock at the door. As he opens he finds a woman, which obviously belongs to one of the noble families, judging by the clothes. "Mr. Gibson?" she asks as she walks into the office, past Saul and takes a seat. @Saul: Oh dear…
@GM: I had to google “most ridiculous Starbucks orders” for this. Hope you’re happy! By the way, I’m playing as if I have the infinite wealth of a noble house at my disposal, since I’m buying things that literally don’t matter. Feel free to cut Mels off when the game starts, and she’ll start
"Grande Tian Tea Latte, skim milk, no foam, extra 'ot, caramel and mint." Meliandri rattles off her order imperiously, then buries her head in a copy of Imperial Betrayal. It’s, perhaps, not the wisest book to be reading in public, but then again, there isn’t yet a proclamation against words.
It’s not until her drink comes that she surfaces from her book. Taking a sip, she looks around the room to see if she recognizes any of the other patrons. Of course, this close to curfew, it’s unlikely, but there’s always a chance.

Peeko returns to Saul's place of business and after hopping about outside for a while follows a Noble woman inside hopping discretely up onto a shelf out of her view and watching.
When the woman asks for references he tilts his head to look at Saul inquiringly. Peeko can give a reference?
"Yes, mother." says Alamara, rolling her eyes at the nagging, but understanding the reason behind it. "I will work double tonight to make up for the lost time." She sighed, knowing that if she missed again tomorrow, she would be in for it even more. Maybe she need to charge for her services like Mr Gibson did. He did seem like he could use a partner...
Letting her mother return to their flat, Alamara takes on double work trying to make up the loads that she missed, dreaming of a fancy coffee shop order.
"Just look at it this way: You're finding a person, before she is lost, and keep her that way. I could just stick a guard to her, but it would work a lot better if someone like you, who can do it without being seen does that job. Because if the leash is felt, someone might struggle against it."
She puts a ring on the table. "This job is easy money for a man with your skills. If you put on this ring, which is a family heirlooom, tells you exactly where the person you shall take care of is, and what sate she is in. And these coins tell me, that you will take this job and fulfil my request to your best abilities, won't you?"
"Did I mention, you'd get that every week?" she adds while stacking 5gp on the desk.

Fhingle looks up at a pretty woman enters, orders a rather extravagent drink and is reading a book. Fhingle gets down from the stool he is sitting on and walks over to her.
"Hi!" Fhingle says slightly louder than what would be considered normal. "I am Fhingle who are you? I don't see many pretty ladies like you around here."
Fhingle is average height for a halfling, his brown hair is slicked back leaving his wide brow open, there is some scaring on there that almost looks ritualistic in purpose. His brown coat covers a pair of purple slacks and a green button up shirt.

"I... uh... ah... that makes logical sense, ma'am. Prevent her from being lost. I've never done that before, but ah... I don't see why not."
"One condition, though... I don't go out after curfew. Unless the state of your daughter is extreme peril. Otherwise, I don't dare defy the proclamation. I'm sure you understand that."
"It'd be your job to make sure she isn't out either. You just keep an eye on her, keep her away from trouble with our new ruler and see to it that she is safe at home when it's time. How'd you do it is yours to decide." the woman tells. She takes out a note with an address on it.
"That is where she should be at night. But if she stays somewhere else inside, you don't need to drag her there. But if she is out during the curfew it is your job to get her off the streets. If you don't like being out then, make sure she is where she belongs before that."

Saul stands, pocketing the five gold that the noblewoman left on the table. He shows her to the door politely. "I am on the case, ma'am. It is unorthodox, but I have it all in hand. I am a wealth of ideas and experience."
With her out, he flops back down on a chair. How in the hells am I supposed to corral an out of control socialite? I'm 52! She won't look at me, or want anything to do with me! Which means beating the concrete, following her, constantly. Without her seeing me. Ugh. What a terrible gig.
I need someone young on this. A handsome boy? A fun girlfriend? How about.... a young paladin? Who does well in obeying orders, appreciates hard work, and knows a sword. Oh Saul, you genius.
Reenergized by the prospect of the regular weekly income, and of a superb new plan, Saul jumps up, grabs his longspear, and is out the door. He tracks down Alamara's flat without too much difficulty. The two had a long day together, and she told the gumshoe about her life, the superficial matters anyway.
Alamara wasn't there; just the old mother. Saul leaves quickly after learning Alamara is absent...I am not about to deal with an angry mother. I would be suspicious too about an old man looking for a young woman.
It was a short walk to the laundry; Saul was familiar with the place. It where he dropped off his clothes every few months for a good washing. Maybe with the new income I'll be able to afford a monthly wash! Now, Saul, don't start seeing yourself as all high and mighty. This gig may not last two weeks.
Finally tracking down Alamara-- it was pretty simple to slip into the laundromat's side door to the back workroom-- Saul lays out his proposal.
"Here's the thing, young paladin. My partner is gone; your leader is missing. We have a lead and I think we should keep working it-- together. You proved yourself today. You were ready for a fight, but didn't go picking one. A young one like you, why... I expected you to simply charge the jail, and you didn't. Then I expected you to charge the guards, and you didn't. You're my type I think. I think you would make a partner, and I have the perfect assignment for you, when we aren't working our primary case."
Saul describes the visit with the matronly noblewoman."The dame said her daughter needs looking after. It's a bit of a hard job for me... I'm an old man, I can't be seen following a young woman. That's how scandals start and how old men end up in the slammer. But you-- you could befriend her, spend time with her. Go where she goes. And the main job is too keep her inside during curfew. Not bad, eh?"
"You'll be able to quit this job. I'm offering you 2 gold a week to do it, plus an additional 5 silver to pay for incidentals like expensive coffee and booze. Maybe a couple of nice outfits suitable for a socialite."
"What say you? We can go find her right now. Tonight, I'll just be... your fun uncle. I can feel her...somewhere in Villegre." Saul shows her the ring, attached to his finger.

”’Ello. Meliandri.” Mels looks down from her book, then buries her head in it again, ignoring the halfling for now. The passage she’s rereading seems especially fitting, and it’d be a shame to lose it halfway through. Once she’s finished, she looks up and properly takes in the garishly-dressed little man.
”More accurately, Meliandri Chastain-Aulamaxa, which is why you do not see many pretty ladies like me. The only other one is five years old, and there are not too many other noble girls around.” Mels closes her book and slowly offers a gloved hand. ”You are not waitstaff, so what are you doing ‘ere?”
Alamara is surprised to see Saul at the laundry, but even more surprised when he offers her a partnership. Two gold per week! That's more than her mother and her make combined. The offer was just too good to turn down. Alamara springs on Saul with surprising exuberance, hugging him and accepting his proposal. "I'd love to take that job, Mr Gibson! Partners! Gosh, I didn't know I had what it took to be a master sleuth, but I guess I underestimated myself."
She looks about the laundry, at the unfinished work and blows a loose strand of hair out of her face. "Can you front me the first week, sir? If I leave now, they will fire me. And I need to make sure my family is fed. If so, I will leave now to find this girl. How hard could that work be? Maybe we'll be best friends? Like sisters?"
Provided Saul pays her the coins now, Alamara picks up her gear and leaves with him, still dressed in her work clothes, which leave a lot to be desired in fashionable neighborhoods.

"I do know, that if you show up dressed like this, there is a chance that you won't make a good first impression. It is only late afternoon, so how about you stop at a shop first?"

"I am staying here for a bit, I help out as needed. I am looking for things to do today, do you have things you need done?" Fhingle sits down at the table.
Alamara looks herself up and down, and shrugs. Appearance has never really mattered much to her, even in her role as defender of the faith, the steel suit is not adorned, but practical.
"I haven't much experience with fancy things, Mr Gibson, but I will do my best to make the right impression." They stop at a moderately priced shop and after a few minutes trying things on, she picks out a well-made tunic and long skirt. Tying her hair up in a ponytail and wiping the sweat and dirt from her face, she actually looks a bit more presentable. Not exquisitely rich, but perhaps at least middle class in work clothes kind of look.
She smiles at Saul and takes a half-curtsy, trying on her best manners. "I suppose this is as ready as I get. We'll have to solve a case or two more before I can get the really fancy clothes."
As Saul and Alamara are ready and finally make it to the Longroad Coffeehouse they are welcomed by a polite halfling woman. "Welcome. A table for two?"
"Yes. And a coffee. Black. No sugar. No cream. No froo froo milk, syrup, or foam."
"Make it two," says Alamara, not knowing what else to get. She just copies what Saul does...

At the point of contact with the subject, Alamara gets a case of cold feet. "I don't know what to say to her. She's not like me. What could I possibly have to approach her about?" She looks at Saul with such a worried look, fearing that she doesn't have what it takes to be a master detective after all.
Laria comes back and serves two coffees, black. "How you take your coffee tells something about your character. But it doesn't go as far as to tell me the color of your soul. It's just a saying, probably brought up by someone who takes his or her coffee with all the frill you despise."

Well, then… Also, the book is called Imperial Betrayal. It’s a revolutionary text written by a Galtan philosopher. I’d imagine it’s a lot like reading The Communist Manifesto or The Diary of Che Guevara in a coffeeshop.
"Grande Tian Tea Latte, skim milk, no foam, extra 'ot, caramel and mint." Looking up from her book, Mels takes in the situation in the coffeeshop. She’d started ignoring the halfling as soon as she’d realized he was just another servant type, going back to her book instead. It wasn’t a question of being polite or rude, or of not wanting a conversation. Almost all her interactions with halflings was as a superior, though, and superiors didn’t need to respond to their subordinates unless they felt the need. The awkward girl in the middle-class-esque tunic, though…
”The book is called Imperial Betrayal. One of my favorite classes at Lady Docur’s was taught by a Galtan exile. She ‘ad a lot to say about ‘Osetter, but did not ‘ave us read the book itself, so I ‘ad to find it elsewhere. In the end, I ‘ad to disagree with Professor Vetta and agree with ‘Osetter and Jubanich.” Meliandri pauses, sliding the book into her handbag. ”There comes a time when the operation of the empire becomes quite odious, and any change is better. Even change like Galt.”

Foxy, I apologize if you told us this already, how do you want us to determine value of sellable items, and then, is it full price to sell those or half-price?
Saul can unload what he is carrying and give the group a little infusion of cash.
You determine the values of the stuff by using your appraise skill. And you make it to money by finding someone who is willing to pay for that stuff. Like a pawnbroker. Someone with know local will know someone, or with diplomacy can get to one too.
And then you tell what you want to sell and the sleazy guy behind the counter will appraise that stuff and make you an offer.
And no, the silver ravens are no sellable items in this time in Kintargo. Even your shady pawnbroker won't be seen with that in his inventory.

My suggestion would be to tally up all items at their sale value, half cost price, and then divide into either 5 or 6 shares depending on whether we want a party fund for group utility items like cure wands. Since we need to keep the Silver Ravens, we can probably just take one each and give Rexus one excluding them from calculations.
Example with Current Treasure:
+1 Leather Armor 580gp
Cloak of Resistance 500gp
Cloak of Elvenkind 1250gp
Scroll of Misdirection 75gp
Scroll of Pass Without Trace 12.5gp
Scroll of Undetectable Alignment 75gp
Scroll of Whispering Wind 75gp
Total 2567.5gp
Share 513.5gp
So if Saul takes the Cloak of Elvenkind he can either pay all or part of the difference, or owe it to the pot. Generally those who owe should hold back on items next time around unless the item is specifically suited to them, etc. This also means that not everyone can cash out their shares so liquid coin needs to be calculated based on what we actually sell. There are programs and spreadsheets that handle all this simply.
I think Saul offered to track loot and imagine he was meaning something like that?
How do we want to handle non-sold loot? For example, the magic cloaks are worth something, probably more than our shares are.
I would suggest to discuss this in game. With Meliandri either demanding to get one, because she's used to get wat she wants. Or instead refusing to take any, as a rat gnawed on cloak is below her as is a cloak making her look unremarkable.
With Fingle not daring to ask for something, much less demand as a former slave. Or demand because he wasn't as a slave. And if someone wants to count beans, then also in game please.
If someone falls behind because of this, just tell me and I might drop a useful item especially fitting te needs of someone left behind because of RP reasons.

Have we actually established what the magic items are?
@GM Foxy how would we go about seeking a specific magic item? Specifically Salonius would love to get his hands on Sleeves of Many Garments 200gp which might well be useful to the whole party.
Is there some kind of mechanic to determine if we can know about, and/or find a particular magic item?
Such minor stuff is available. The question is how you get your hands on one, or find someone who is able to craft it. You got disguise self on your spell list? If not it might be a sidequest.

I do, but you cannot take Craft Wondrous Item until 3rd level so making it myself is out, though I could provide the spell - I think it is in my Spell book, though I need to check on herolab.
Wonderful. Now you either have to find someone who has Craft Wondrous items in Kintargo, or find someone who can organize such items. As the first AP is stretching over 7 weeks, we are not in a hurry and can play such things out.
As for magical items - There is no list with magic item names that are recognized throughout Golarion. It more like: This is the legendary sword that Trakhum the Glorious - my great grandfathers - wielded in the great civil war to fight the devils. Instead of that +2 evil outsider bane longsword.
Sleeves of many garments is pretty close to a mundane description. But I assume it's nothing everyone and his uncle has seen and knows. Please keep that in mind when searching for magical items. And also for descriptions to your companions, once you identify the magical goods.
As for the sleeve of many garments, that ship has sailed. But for reference I'd imagine, you'd search for a way to have your disguise self ready as a item you can command, instead of preparing this spell everyday. And then go to find something that does this.
Because catalogue of items ready at hand is Shadowrun, not Pathfinder, at least in my imagination.

That's is way overcomplicated. How about whoever can best use the item, that person gets it. And if it is an item that everyone can use, we roll on it or people just let someone have it, and we do our best make sure everyone is getting something.
I want to treat this like we are playing at a table together and are friends, not like we are all just trying to maximize ourselves. The group is what matters.
I do like the idea of dividing up money into six parts and starting a "party fund" to buy items like wands. Let's just start doing that from here on out.
For our current magic items:
Salonius gets all the scrolls
Saul takes the cloak of elvenkind
Jhen, Fhingle, and Mels can roll off (d100) on the cloak of resistance.
Magic Leather Armor: Does anyone want it? We can sell otherwise.
MW Silver Morningstar: We should use it. Saul can wield it,
but maybe Jhen or Mels want it. Just claim it and it is yours.

@Saul that is what we do in all the group I have played in and it really is not that complicated I would be happy to do the book keeping, there are even apps setup to do it so you just plug in. I would happily chuck up a Google spreadsheet everyone can view.
I appreciate everyone might not want that way, but I think it is much fairer so it is my preferred option. For example Fhingle would not get the short straw for being small, and people would not get pigeon holed, stuck with stuff that fits "the wizard" but not their character, etc.
If there is no cost I would rather have The Cloak of Elvenkind, Salonius, is the most stealthy character by a fair margin and has and will use the skill in combat and out. But as a first level wizard scrolls and the money to craft them are a priority.

Isn't ID'ing just a spellcraft check?
Ok, Salonius, I have no problem handing reins of the items over to you. Happy to trust you.
Though I would roll against you for that cloak. The only reason Saul isn't stealthy yet is lack of skillpoints. I will take stealth next level. Seems like something a PI should be able to.

Loot is my least favorite part of Pathfinder, so any system we have works for me.

So you'll have to explain it to me a bit, Salonius. Are you giving me the cloak of elvenkind, then, so that puts me in the hole, so to speak, vs. everyone else. Do I still get the cash?
Also- we just split up 1500 and a little bit, not 575 in actual coin, so I am not sure where that number came from.
Also- if you are selling the leather armor, where is that money going.
Actually all of those questions can be cleared up with a post in game by Salonius... as long as you understand the system and can tell us who gets what clearly, then I am good.
Male Human Wizard 1, Init +3; Perception +7 (+5 if no Peeko); 16/16 HP, 13 AC 13 Touch 10 FF; Fort +2, Ref +3, Will +3, Splintered Spear 7/7
Its not like you are really in the hole as it were it is just like a method to ensure everybody keeps more or less even. Its just a way of tracking how things balance out rather than relying upon the flow of treasure to favor everyone equally.
When we sell something the money goes into a group purse, kept wherever, by whoever - a bank might not be a bad shout if they are reliable? This money can then be withdrawn and taken from the share of those who withdraw it. So if Salonius takes 125gp so he can scribe ten scrolls his share goes down accordingly.
I have not included the coin from the mundane items you just sold, I certainly can if you would like? It is nice to have easily accessible records of wealth in case you get confused or forget, etc.
Generally it is more about keeping things even than anyone being in actual debt. So it is just a sort of points score letting us all know where we stand.
The 575gp is from the sale of the +1 Leather Armor and the Scroll of Pass Without Trace, which I felt were safe sale assumptions - I should probably have waited until we actually sold them in game.
If someone wants to cash out their share in coin we have to take that from actual coin, or sell more items to get actual coin. So generally any items nobody claims will be sold, or taken as party items. I feel there may be a case for some of the scrolls being party items so I have yet to mark them as sold. I am considering taking Whispering Wind for Salonius, but it seems like a scriber rather than a scroller...
Part of the idea behind the system - which to be clear I certainly did not invent everyone seemed to use it at the game store I started playing at when I lived in the U.S - is that it encourages players to keep items picked up as loot because they get them at half price. So in theory you are better off keeping as many items as possible.
I should probably just add in the 1500gp if there are no objections?
I will make a proposal in game after we deal with the cellar, and try to be clearer :) I will likely just have Salonius keep a ledger in the back of his spell book which is the same as the spreadsheet.
Salonius concept has no consequences in game as it just documents what is for ooc comparison of wealth.
You can take the coins, put them under your pillow and it is Salonius problem to properly note that down on the sheet.
The sheet sums the 50% sell value of all items and divides them by the number of players. Which is 677.9 gold.
This share is listed in the second row as the share under every players name. And when someone gets an item then the 50%sell value gets subtracted from that character's share listed under his name.
Meliandri got the cloak of resistance assigned. So she has a balance of 677.9 - 500 = 177.9 on her account.
Saul got 677.9 - 1250 = -572.1 for getting the elven cloak.
If the 1500 gold get included, this raises the share of everyone to 977.9, but in your case it wouldn't change your balance, as you got them in your pouch leading to
977.9 -1250 -300 = -572.1
This only has some consequence in game when you find the next stuff, or you need extra money from the group money you will have once the stuff is sold and Meliandri points out, that it is her turn to buy some new clothes, because she has nothing to wear to the opera and you have to wait and can't get more money as you got more than your share already.
If no one cares and you need that special holy devil bane spear that noone else can use to kill the endboss, you'll get it even though you got the largest share already.
Like every system, this one has some flaws too. If you for example find the unique +2 defending goblin bane sword (you know that legendary sword that this cousin on your mothers side...) that lists for 32.000 that costs 4 times what it is worth for the average player saving his or her coin.
Because who in his right mind would take defending and goblin bane sword if it puts your balance into the negatives, so you don't get anything for the next three levels.
Ran into that problem already in other games. It is no problem, as long as the group is reasonable in correcting the value in share to the wroth it actually has for the player.

Okay map is up, caught me at just the wrong time I am afraid. If you have the map image Foxy all you need to do is click on the prvious map hit delete and then paste the new one in in its place, well also right click go to order and select move to back. I certainly do not mind doing it, but in case I do not respond for a bit, etc.
Do you prefer the map tagless with grid like I have it? I did not want to read the tags so I just switched them straight off, but if there is a permutation from the PDF portfolio you prefer just let me know. Was not sure where the basement entrance was so placement is probably off.
I left one of each badguy we have encountered off to the side feel free to delete if you do not need them.
Ok, I tried it out to replace the background map. As the one you used lacked the basement room Saul and Mel stood in. Didn't think I could simply paste it. But this way I can really do it myself, with no delay do to /sleep/work/real life in general.

Most everyone in this recruitment thread have said they have already been in 1-3 failed Kingmakers... It does make me think. It requires people who are very willing to RP and be independent. Kinda like the first few weeks of this game, I think.

True, that said it is consistently ranked as one of the best APs. I would find the longest running couple of Kingmaker games on the boards and see what they are doing right, maybe see if you can find a few wound up ones and see if you can identify the problems that caused them to shut down? The individual AP forums usually have some pretty good advice and resources to, if you have not checked them out.
I suspect a big part of that is a lot of PBPs fizzle out and Kingmaker is an older AP so there have simply been more fizzles.

Interesting would be to find out were they failed. I really disliked the kingdom mini game that starts with book 2. To me it felt like having to do taxes instead of adventuring.

I'm currently in a pbp Kingmaker campaign and and I agree the kingdom mini game can be a grind. Also, the campaign, at times, does not give a clear direction on where to head or what to do and players can feel lost.
The random encounters in book 1 really bog down play. In our pbp the GM cut out most of the random encounters and described/summarized the exploration of Hexes. Hope this helps/makes sense.

Can I just clarify whether firing into melee has a 50% chance of hitting either grappler? There is no such text in PF, but some reasonable GMs rule that as an accidental omission and go with the 3.5 rule - I fall into the it is intentionally omitted camp since in PF grapples are adjacent rather than sharing space, etc.
