Alistair follows the Griento family into the dining car, sitting in the chair and adjusting his jacket, waiting with the palms of his hands on the table, nearly motionless, but still appearing casual, as if such precise, practiced actions were simply a way of life for the scholar.

Malia turns to Falko and says, "Well since the attack from yesterday, many second class passengers decided to ask for a refund. If there is any merit to your claims we could go to a 2nd class compartment and check for this rune."

"Sounds like a good place to start. But I'm just the messenger here. This is your train. I don't mind giving you a hand, but my duty is to my wards. I can't leave them by themselves for too long. They might invent a theory or something..." he replies, ending on a dismissive tone.

"Right then, I follow you."

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Alistair sees a man that looks similar to one of his contacts walk with a woman wearing a train security uniform leave the kitchen area and walk towards 2nd class. The train cook comes by and leaves a bottle of wine and cheese and says, "This is the first course compliments of the Danoran Sovereign's nephew. Dr. Jierre."

Chretien, the totems have a resemblance of the animal with the face etched on them with looks like the original animal's eyes on a stick with fur, scales or feathers on them, you would need to have them attached to your person with a pin or on your belt.

@Chretien, Angus, Isaac, Iva.. Griento smiles and says, "That is an excellent choice, Mr. Dewir, Madame Burnett and Mr. Bray what would you choose?"

@Falko, you and Malia walk your way into the second class cabin and what you see is the dwarf, Verzubak, talking to the different people in second class while rolling what looks like dice in a cup. You then go into a compartment and close the sliding door and she says, "Ok, let's look for this rune."
Falko Perception/Detect Magic DC 15

Spoiler:
You are able to find the rune which is exactly the same as the one that was in your cabin.

Perception with Heroism: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 14 + 2 = 33

Falko points to the etched rune and says to Malia: "That looks like what I saw before the lamp got thrown away..." leaving her to reach her own conclusions.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

She then says,"Ok, that shouldn´t be there. I do not know anything about how magic works or runes for that matter. Do you want me to report this to the conductor?"

"I'm not sure what the conductor would do... No, best to just throw them out. Anyway,s, taht's what my ward did, and he knows more than me about those things..."

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Malia looks at you and shakes her head and says, "There are hundred of these gas lamps on the train and are not cheap to replace. I don't know anything about runes. Can you wash them off with steel wool and some soap?"

"Let's try! You got steel wool?" he replies, curious.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

I am waiting on responses from Iva and Angus

Falko makes his way back to the dining car to go and pick up some steel wool to clean off the runes and there you notice a bespectacled, nebbishy-looking man in his mid-20s. He has tousled dark hair, long, slender fingers, and a relatively narrow frame, he is wearing the comfortable trousers and shirt of someone not really looking of the 1st class variety but the dining car is for both 1st and 2nd class passengers and he is sitting with the Griento family minus Damata because he is in your compartment.

You also see Jierre using sign language with his wife Ottavia. In another one of the booths you see Elanor crestfallen and alone. Jierre says, "Mmmmyyyy cccommplimments forrr lunnnnch. Thhheeeeyyyy shhhallll beee brrrinnnggging it shhhhoortttlly."

Falko ignores everyone, intent on solving the rune problem first.

"All right, let's see if it comes off..."

Alistair uncorks the wine, inhaling from the opening in the bottle, his eyes closed, a smile forming on his face. "It smells wonderful. Care for a glass, Madam Griento?" He gestures towards her wine goblet with the bottle, offering a pour as he scans the dining car quickly, looking for his contact. He notices the man and woman heading back toward 2nd Class, sighing inwardly to himself. At least I've left myself a seat back there. I hope that damned Dwarf doesn't give me too much grief for it.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

She says, "That sounds lovely. That man who just walked by works for Senor Mulheer, you may want to talk with him."

Malia and Falko go back to second class with the steel wool and she tries to rub off the rune with the steel wool to no avail and says, "It won't come off. Maybe you would like to speak with the conductor and engineer this evening about it."

"Look, I came to you because... Because I trust you. Now, my ward, he knows better than me, and he got rid of the thing right away. I came to warn you, that's all. My instinct tells me this is some bad magic, and that it is set up to spread through thise lamps. I beg you to act now! You're responsible for security, not the conductor, nor the engineer."

Shot Putter Funkmeister

I am going to need a roll for that

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Diplomacy, where is everyone?

Diplomacy with Heroism: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 11 + 2 = 32

Alistair feigns surprise, taking the napkin off of his lap and folding it on his plate. "My apologies, then, madam. If I may be excused for a moment? I dare not miss such an opportunity." When Ms. Griento gives her consent, Alistair will follow Gauthier to 2nd Class

Iva nods in agreement with Mr Griento's suggestion. "I do believe that is a good solution. A token payment, and I'm your lawyer for the duration of this issue."

She listens carefully to the description of the tokens. When the piranha token is mentioned she raises her hand. "I believe I will use that one."

I was traveling for the last few days, and thought I'd have time to post. Not so much. I'm back in town now.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Malia turns to answer and then she sees Alistair and says, "It looks as though someone wants to talk to you." she stops and whispers, "I cannot remove the lamps en masse there are hundreds on the train and it gets dark at three pm and we won't arrive until around 6pm. What I can do for you is have them replaced once we get to Nalaam, in Nalaam we can have the runes removed or put them on the train to Beaumont and then keep them in the no magic zone long enough for them to be rendered inert."

Yeah I did the math a 35 would have gotten it done.

She then turns to Alistair as he approaches, "Do you need help finding your seat?"

Alistair shakes his head, holding his hand up and pointing towards Cephas/Cretien. "I've actually come to speak with Senor Mulheer's man here, Madam. Might I have a moment with the gentleman?"

Falko lifts a finger, telling the man to wait at a distance: "Look, I can't believe all the lamps are marked, but at least you should deal with first class cabins. This is where the s&~@ will hit hardest on you. I came to help. I can't force your hand, but I'm truly worried..."

He moves up to Alistair: "Of course, I'll lead you to Mulheer. He's been expecting you." and has the man follow him back to the cabin.

i will rather have one as a token of friendship he replied smiling to Damata grienko

the toucan my probably interest Gauthier and fit him better then myself

these stat bonus are enhancement bonus i imagine ?

Shot Putter Funkmeister

They are only for as long as you are with Griento, if he dies then they will no longer work.

Once they reach the cabin, Falko turns to Alistair: "Please wait here, I'll get Mulheer."

He then gets in the cabin and goes to whisper in Cretien's ear that someone's outside to speak with Mulheer.

He does his best to get aught on the situation without asking people to repeat everything, which he always finds annoying. He wants to tell them about the lamps in the other compartments, but Griento's presence stops him.

"These are wonderful, and truly frightening at the same time. But Grientos, I ahve to ask, why would the Family be looking for those? They strike me more as interested in profit, no?" he asks, hoping to get Grientos to talk.

About the token, I'm good with anything. Will Angus be casting spells relying on Chr for DC? If not, then I should probably take the toco-toucan-token.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Griento responds to Angus, "Please take whichever one assists you most."

He then turns to Falko and says, "Nalaam is the city of the most powerful mages in Lanjyr. They may have a means to experiment with the ancient fuerze espiritual and get the powers or maybe they will just anger the ancestors of these great spirits and cause a catastrophe. The Family probably can make a quick fortune by selling them to the Mages."

"I see. Then we need to make sure they don't bother you, but, if I'm not mistaken, don't they need you around to have the artefacts functioning? Do you not fear to be taken along with the tokens?"

im confused as to who wants to talk to me and why?

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Alistair the new player. You are considered the "principal," because he wants to join the team.

ah, i see

Cretien turns to the person in front of him and says, "Hello, yes, youre looking for me? Cephas is the name."

"I am Arlind Danior, sir. At your service." Alistair extends his hand, offering a handshake. "I've been sent to work in your service. Might there be a private location we can work out the details of my employment?"

Finally, we're all in the same room, plus Grientos!

Falko Escheus wrote:

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Grientos says, "That may be a possibility. It depends if the wizards feel they can crack the magic without me being there. I am not a magician but a businessman who is related to a warchief. Luckily, my children aren't old enough to have performed the adultness ritual where they could also access the totems' powers."

"Certainly, that's must be a relief. Ok, back to those artefacts. I could use the Toco-Toucan totem to help and protect you and your family."

Ok, lots of side conversations, so I want to make sure we don't miss loose ends: (1) Bree brought wine to the cabin and chatted us up. That can't be good. (2) Grientos needs us to stay safe against the family. So we're coming along for a meet and look like muscle, right? Someone remembers when and where? What I'm not getting is why he's showing us the artefacts, let alone use them. (3) Luc Jierre has been messing with the locomotive and the lamps in the cabin. We also know he's created some kind of lamp that can use different plane-touched oils for different effects. The lamp is crazy powerful. (4) We're here to identify the Obscurati contact, whom we think is Bree, and follow her to a secret meeting. (5) Did I miss/misunderstand something?

Shot Putter Funkmeister

well he is showing you the artifacts so you can pick one you want to use during the confrontation with the family, his logic is to give the group as much of an edge over the enemies as possible. The meeting is to be in Vendricce which is the stop in two days time. Tonight is Nalaam(in the border lands), tomorrow is Sid Minos in Chrysalir and the Vendricce is the last, which is on the border of Elfaiver.

Grientos says, "That is a great choice Senor de Nevereth. What would you like Senora Skipwith?"

Won't this Vendricce work conflict with our duty to follow Bree and figure where the Obscurati are meeting?

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Vendricce is the name of the city in Bergeron's letter where the meet is taking place. If Bree is a member of the Ob, she will lead you to the meeting place in the city where the other members can/could be identified.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Damata says, "I will meet you in the hotel lobby at 730 and the meet takes place at 8pm. I will leave the remaining totems and you pick the ones you will use."

And with that he walks out of the compartment.

Alistair and Chretien walk into the compartment now that Griento has left.

GMEDWIN wrote:

That's what I mean. If we're busy saving Grientos from the Family, we won't be able to follow Bree or someone else to the meet, unless I'm missing something. Wait! I re-read your post. I think my mistake in reading your past post is that you said the meet was in Vendricce and, since you we're just talking about the Family, I assumed that you were talking about the meet with the Family, but perhaps I misunderstood, and the meet is tonight, which would fit with your last post from Grientos... Help me!

Falko nods at Grientos and grabs the Toco-Toucan Totem.

Do the totems start working now, or only for the meet against the Family?

Once the group is finally together, Falko says: "Ok, we among one another, but I would not be surprise that this cabin is under a lot of scrutiny, magical or otherwise. Bree's visit seems to confirm this. So, glad to see you made it onboard the train, Arlind and Parthena. Things are busy here, and we can use your help. I'd like us to discuss the potential threat posed by the adding of runes on cabin lamps. I went to let Malia know. She seemed surprised, as far as I can tell. We found a lamp in second class with the same rune. We tried to 'clean' it away, to no avail."

"Hilary believes these runes could be some kind of propagating and amplifying network for some effect related to Nem. That can't be good. We also know Jierre built a powerful lamp whose effect depends on the oil used. Finally, we know he messed with the locomotive."

"All these pieces seem to point to something big, about to happen. So what can we do to prevent it?" he asks.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

The Grientos meeting with the Family is tonight in Nalaam, The meeting of the Obscurati is two nights in the future. The city you will arrive at this evening is Nalaam, the next night is Sid Minos and then the final stop where the meeting is, is Vendricce. Attending the Grientos meeting wouldn't stop you from following Bree if she is in the Obscurati to the main meeting in two nights time.

The totems will work when Damata wears his Golden Condor mask because he is Beran orkan Warchief.

Tiefling map Armiger (Machinehead) 9/ Aristocrat 1 // AC 26/22/15 / HP 62/84 / F +10 R +11 W +9 / Init. +3 / Perc. +15 / Sense Motive +13

"Well, a case could be made for throwing the lamps out perhaps with more abandon. Maybe cutting the electricity if that is how they are staying lit."

Shot Putter Funkmeister

They are oil lamps.

Arlind takes his spectacles off, rubbing the lenses on his tunic as he considers the information he's been given. He ignores any form of greeting or salutation when he replies, as he puts his spectacles back on. "Might I have a look at these runes? It's possible I may be able to discern a bit more of their nature. I don't mean to imply that Hilary was lax or incomplete in his analysis, but I'd like to see for myself. Additionally, it might benefit us to examine the oil being used, and perhaps determine what the intended effect is. All of this is preliminary information-gathering, of course, and shouldn't take more than a few minutes. After that, we can devise a course of action."

AC 22, T 16, FF 17 hp 84/85 Female human aristocrat 1/slayer (bounty hunter) 9 Init +7; Senses Perception +12 | Fort +10, Ref +14, Will +7

Before Grientos leaves.

When the piranha token is mentioned she raises her hand. "I believe I will use that one. It fits with my skills."

When the Group is Together

"Glad to be here. She nods to everyone in greeting. Someone has been tampering with the locomotive and the lamps? Who or what is Nem? Please help me come up to speed. I want to be ready as possible to assist."

"The key problem is access. There's likely to be one lamp in every cabin, which means we need to break in them, if they're unoccupied at the time..."

"As for Nem, I believe Stephan knows more than all of us put together..." he turns to Angus with a slight bow.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Isaac says, "I think our main concern is not give up our cover. If we start breaking into all of the cabins during the day, we definitely will be discovered. If we are to do anything we should probably wait until this evening. We have tossed our lamp out so this deed cannot happen to us. If they knew who we in actuality are, they would have took action against us already."

Shot Putter Funkmeister

Alistair, you could go back to your compartment to see if it has a rune. The one in this compartment went out the window.

I am currently without an animal token - are they visible/would I see them in the others' possession? Or did I just miss that opportunity?

This post has most of them.

This post has the rest.

Shot Putter Funkmeister

I would suggest talking to Griento before helping yourself to a totem. It is common sense. He doesn't know you.
