Ok, did a search of the thread for Nem :)
"Nem..." Says Falko, letting the dark word settle in the room. "This rune here is the symbol of Nem, the dark planet. Johnathan knew a few things about it, so does Angus, no? Some say it does not exist, but we've crossed its path a few times already. Recall the spirit that possessed Xambria at the Ziggurat, Sijhen? We thought it might be of Nem at the time. It turned out that forces of Nem were preventing it from contacting his plane..."
"Also, we found a gun tainted with the plane's energy not so long ago, on that very trip. One that we decided to get rid of. And the note that came with the gun, we had identified that the last person in contact with it had the taint of Nem as well..."
"Also, Bergeron spoke about Nem in his letter to Duval. He mentioned it in relation to the Ancients, saying that the Ancient were perhaps fighting forces from Nem, Apet, and Jiese..."
"And finally, there's the link to the Bleak Gate... Gale mentioned it. Mentioned that she traveled to the Gate when Nem was in a particular conjunction with the New Moon. Something like this... I know Gale was worried. Something was up on the other side of Flint, something big."
"Now, why is that lamp here? Who brought it? And more importantly, what does it do..?"

Before you get too far down the car, you notice a dwarf chatting up different passengers while rolling his dice into a wooden cup on your way to first class. As you get closer to him you see that he is bleary eyed and is bald with a thick brown beard.
He says to you, "Новый пассажир?Меня зовут Верзубак Танталович и ты?"

Alistair moves past the Dwarf, nodding and reaching out to shake his hand.
Это удовольствие, друг Танталович. Я Арлинд. Я не в том месте. У меня есть билет для первоклассного. Пожалуйста извините меня?" He says, as he produces the second ticket stub he had stashed in his pocket.

Remember your contacts told you it was Luc who was on the train last night not Bree. You could cast Identify to see what the rune does or what the rune does with the lamp.
Falko Escheus |
"Ah no, Jierre! It must have been Jierre who modified the lamp... I'm not too good at interpreting auras, but I'll give it a try. We could ask Grientos, but it's risky..."
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
"Nope! No idea."
"Ok, so Jierre has put something in the chimney. We need to investigate that, and he put something in our room. Did he make us? Does he know who we are? Or did he do this in more than one room???"
"I think we need to move on this, quickly. Where can we store that lamp so it doesn't harm us? Should we just throw it out the window? Also, we need to check other rooms. Perhaps we should ask Grientos to come back later? Or do we split our efforts?"
Isaac Kgmetrepersecondsquared |
"Hold on a moment. Let me take a look at this and see what I can figure out." Isaac taps a couple buttons on his analyzer on his wrist and then examines the lamp.

Arlind/Alistair frowns, and blushes sheepishly. He leans down to whisper into the Dwarf's ear, "Извинения, друг. Это правда, что правда ... смущающая. У меня есть ... особый друг, в первом классе. Она ждет меня. Я встретил ее на платформе, и она велела мне найти ее. Надеюсь, вы поймете мою осторожность. Прости меня."

Apologies, friend. It is just that the truth is...embarrasing. I have a...special sort of friend, up in first class. She is waiting for me. I met her on the platform, and she told me to find her. I hope you can understand my caution. Forgive me.

Falko tries to keep his mouth closed, but fails. "This is madness! Nem... I fear the worst. Is there any way for us to alert train security without blowing our cover?" asks Falko, completely freaked by Isaac's deductions.
Alistair Goswick |
The dwarf frowns and says, "Да, конечно. Вы также не являетесь хорошим слушателем. Желаем приятного путешествия."

Why you didn't go with your cover story is beyond me.
I'll be honest, I'd forgotten about the established cover story after a few days
Arlind/Alistair proceeds to First Class, moving through the corridor for any sign of his teammates.
Iva Skipwith-Darling |
Iva does her best to keep up the conversation with Grientos, asking about his family, is their trip business or pleasure, and so on trying to cover the sounds of any conversation coming from the room behind her. "I have not been to Sid Minos before. I've spent some time in Mirsk. I didn't get the chance to travel that far south and east when I was visiting. It would be nice if I get to travel that far. I may be sent back to the office after the paperwork has been completed."

This is me botting Isaac
Isaac thinks for a quick second and remembers when earlier this morning when Falko had told him about the situation surrounding their contacts and them seeing Luc enter the train being led around by the conductor late at night, "I think it be best to remove the lamp from our compartment and then throw it out of the window and then this evening we try to see how this thing works."
@Iva, Griento nods at your statement and says, "My family and I have only ever been to Risur but have stayed primarily in Ber. The kids are very excited about seeing the known world."
@Alistair, Verzubak continues chatting up passengers and playing with his dice making his way towards first class.
Cretien Dufrene |
"Yes, break the chain and then later try to follow the effect to the source. Grientos needs to address all or at least most of us."
Alistair Goswick |
Alistair peeks into the cabins of the first-class car as he walks up the aisle, looking for anyone who matches the descriptions given in the dead-drop missive he'd received earlier in the week. He fidgets with his spectacles, buffing them on the edge of his shirt and adjusting the satchel over his shoulder as he walks, trying to act nonchalant, as if meeting a friend.
GMEDWIN |
Falko takes out a screw driver , removes all of the screws, while Isaac opens the window and you toss the lamp out the window, the glass housing breaks as it hits the ground below and shortly thereafter you are completely out of sight.
@Alistair, you knock on the first compartment in first class and you hear a muffled "Come in!".
You open the door and what you see is an orkish family and the woman says, "Take a seat young man. My name is Ejeka Griento and these are my boisterous children, Dabo( the girl) and Tarro( the boy). When did you get on the train? This ride has been most terribly exciting, we were attacked by a monster yesterday."
Falko Escheus |
"Ok, that's done." says Falko, visibly surprised things went so smoothly. "Now, before we let Grientos in, I ask you again: [b]"Should we find a way to alert the train's security? Seems like they could deal with this, and it might be the best way to keep our cover safe, no? I could go speak with Malia, or find a more subtle way to let her know."
Alistair Goswick |
Do I know of Griento? Do I know if his family knows much about him?
Alistair enters the cramped cabin, closing the door behind him and removing his jacket to hang it on the hook near the door. He stands at the door, blocking the window with his back. "Greetings, madam! I am Arlind. I boarded just a few minutes ago, back in Oslinie Udar. I've been hired on as an instructor and tutor for a client, and I seem to have gotten a bit turned around - no small feat, while aboard a train!" He grins, waving at the children and making a face at one of them when they stick their tongue out at him. His shoulders relax as the tension seems to slip away, though he is still as wary as always.
GMEDWIN |
You would not know about there family. The group has not been in contact with main office, except for the ship but there hasn't been enough time for it to sail back to Risur and back for the rendezvous in both Sid Minos and later in Vendricce.
The woman says, "Who is your client, I might be able to help you get pointed in the correct direction."
@ the rest, I hope you don't mind me keeping going forward.
Isaac then lets Iva and Damata back into your train compartment and says, "Sorry for having you wait."
They both reenter.

Okay, who is my client, then? I know the plan was for me to join the group as a scholar/tutor, etc. but I don't know who exactly I'm supposed to be meeting with.
Falko Escheus |
Isaac says, "According to our sources, the conductor knows because he let Luc on the train. It may work for us or blow up in our face."
"Right then. I'll go see what I can do while you meet with Grientos." says Falko, too worried to stay and listen, even though the Orc's revelations were just amazing. He had to try something. The whole train might be set to travel to Nem, for all he knew...
He walks the wagon, thinking as fast as he can, summoning arcane luck, looking for Malia.
GMEDWIN |
Falko goes into the corridor and starts to look for Malia.
Damat Griento walks into the compartment again followed by Iva and looks at Cretien and says, "These are the items that those Family folks want from me. The first thing you need to carry are one of my tribe's totems, they each have infused with it the essence of the animal it represents. These extra abilities only function when I as a Grientian warchief am wearing mine."
He then reopens the luggage. Each totem grants the user a +1 spiritual step modifier to your weapon attacks, they also grant you a +15 temporary hit points. The totem you choose will grant you a specific animal trait depending on which you grab.
Cretien Dufrene |
Alistair nods appreciatively to Ms. Griento.
"I am here for Mister Cretien Dufrene. Do you know of him?"
we are using aliases
Cretien Dufrene |
Cretien looks to those assembled. "I've a revelation of my own. I have arranged, at a potentially great personal cost to myself, for two assistants to be in-place during our meeting as a contingency in the very likely event that things go sour. They will be wearing green."
He looks around, gauging the reactions of those assembled. "Second, does anyone have an alchemist's fire? I need one prior to the meeting."
"...and finally, Mr. Griento, could you elaborate upon what effects the bearer of each totem could expect while you wear your headdress? As you may have surmised, I like things planned out ahead of time and the more information, the better."
Iva Skipwith-Darling |
"I'm afraid I cannot help the Alchemist Fire. Would a Tanglefoot bag work?"
She sits very straight in her chair, "I hope I'm not being too forward. Who are the Family? Why do they want something from this fine gentleman? Is there anyway I can be of assistance?" she looks interested in helping.
GMEDWIN |
@AListair, I will pretend you said Cephas Mulheer
She says, "Oh, that is the next cabin. My husband is meeting with him presently. You will probably have to wait. Would you like to join us in the dining car?"
@the rest - Falko, Griento looks in shock and says, "Who is the Family? The Family is the largest international criminal organization in Lanjyr. Can she be trusted, Mr. Mulheer?"
Angus McCormick |
GMEDWIN |
Falko makes his way toward the Dining car, as he arrives he sees Luc and Ottavia enjoying wine and cheese, conversing in sign language. At one point Luc waves down Malia and stutters out a request, "I-I-I wwwant to bbbuy aaall of the Fffirst Ccclass passngers lunch to-to-today."
Alistair Goswick |
Forgive me, I wasn't sure which name was the Alias and which the real one. I see now that Falko's alias is Gauthier, Angus' is Stephen, and Iva's is Parthena. Thanks for clarifying.
"That would be lovely." Alistair nods appreciatively at the invitation. "Shall we depart now? I'm not certain of when the dinner service begins."
Cretien Dufrene |
"I have no idea if she can be trusted. I've not been on this trip all that long. The monster attack galvanized us as people of action who must stick together, and so we do. You, and she as well, have made themselves part of whatever is going on in this train. Fortunately for you, your part is likely to be over once we settle your deal with the Family."
"And yes, the Family is a large criminal syndicate, operating legal and illegal businesses wherever they can get their hooks into. I've had dealings with them in the past, which shouldn't surprise you as I deal with items of magical interest as well and they often hire or coerce folks to do such research for them as they are more concerned with matters of coin."
"Now to my other question, what of these totems? What are the believed and/or anticipated known effects?"
Falko Escheus |
Falko waits patiently, keeping to the shadows if possible, until he can catch Malia's attention.
Once he's drawn her to a safe and quiet place, he looks deep into her eyes and says, faking discomfort: "Look, I'm not sure how to say this, but one of my wards, he's a little... Intense about things being in their proper places, etc. In any case, he's noticed something odd about their cabin's lamp, some kind of rune. In any case, he's torn it from the wall and threw it out the window before I could do anything. So I don't know, he could be making this up. It's odd, that's all... What do you think? Could be only their cabin, could be others..."

"I'm welcome the chance to be of assistance. My employer appears to be involved in your issue." She nods to Stephan. "I must protect his interests first of course. You seem like an upright man Mr. Griento. This Family sounds bad, and you shouldn't have to deal with them alone."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

@ Alistair, Mrs. Griento says, "Delightful, children let's accompany this nice man for lunch. "
The two children scamper towards the dining car with you and their mother in tow.
@Falko, you wait until Luc makes his order and then you pull Malia off to the side and speak with her. Malia says, "That is a bit peculiar. Runes... I wish he hadn't thrown it out the window, then I could see it. It may only be his cabin but it could be all of them. What would you have me do?"
Falko
@Chretien, Iva, Angus and Isaac,: Damata Griento says, "There is another part to the train, I had no idea. Well ma'am, you had mentioned that you were a... la letrada.. lawyer. Normally, those in your profession prefer to have plausible deniability in such things. But you seem as a trustworthy sort. I can give you a token sum to be officially your client as well, if you would like."
He then starts to talk about the totems, "These items have been in my tribe and clan for hundreds of years, although legends speak of millennia. The jaguar totem is supposedly able to increase a person's speed and strength and gives you the ability to pounce like a jaguar.+2 to strength and dex and you get to do a pounce maneuver.. if you choose this one send me a pm and we will hash out the details, a totem of the piranha enhances a person's senses first they can either see underwater or in the dark but when they perform an attack in close quarters it is even more vicious than normal You get darkvision and scent you get a +5 to swim)not really important for the fight melee attacks do +1 bleed and con damage, a totem of the toco toucan, with this totem you become more attractive as if you had a plume of feathers in beautiful colors You will get a +4 to charisma and be able to use the sonic blast effect at one target which does 3d6 damage, spectacled bear this one increases your intellect greatly and you get the ability to shoot beams out of your eyes +2 to both wisdom and intelligence and you get to do a touch attack and you do 5+ your Int or Wis modifier of electrical or fire damage +d6 and each round you concentrate on the enemy it adds an extra d6 up to your level, an anteater this totem has the ability to use it nose to knock people over or pull them towards you with a devasting gust of wind and pangolin.
GMEDWIN |
The anteater totem gives you a devastating wind weapon activated through your nose, it is a touch attack. You could also use it fling a sword at much faster speed than normally thrown and doing double damage. Griento says, "pangolin gives you the ability to see at night as well while you have the totem it adds extra defensive layers which protect you from damage." You get dark vision as well as +5 to your ac and DR5 against slashing weapons.
Malia turns to Falko and says, "Well since the attack from yesterday, many second class passengers decided to ask for a refund. If there is any merit to your claims we could go to a 2nd class compartment and check for this rune."
Cretien Dufrene |
"Ah, then I shall play the role of the Griento clan Bear."
these are little totems we keep on our person, or do we hold them, or wear them?
