Posting in all of my games. We made it to CA... but finding a home that meets my family's needs (while being in price range) is proving a bit challenging... will be off the boards for a bit. Please bot me as necessary (and possibly send good vibes/prayers my way). Thanks for your continued patience.

GMDQ |

Chakam, you with us?
Chad, this is a belated reply, but if you see this, good luck. The housing market across the country is brutal. Hope you've found something.

Chakam |

We should have found an imp prostitute too. An improstitute, one would say? :)

Chakam |

Lol Impimping the improstitute!
Yeah, I can only imagine a campaign only with imps. It'd have to be some evil campaign, I guess, or a heavily adapted AP. Or not - maybe they're a group of imps seeking redemption somehow. Lol - Hell's Rebels with rebellious imps!

GMDQ |

Well, Mercury has officially left Retrograde today so hopefully there will be no more of that. :)
Please check in the thread if you can; there's only three of you so I need to be sure you're all in before I move on.

GMDQ |

I am attending to some sudden family stuff for the next few days--non-crisis but nonetheless urgent. I may be slow; please talk amongst yourselves.
You can assume you depart safely from the werewolf.
And all of you, take a hero point for planning a fun heist. I don't know how it went for you, but this was way more fun than the as-written obnoxiously complicated combat the devs intended.
With the ring of the iron skull in hand, you can attune the ring to Dr. Fitch's leg bone. It acts as a compass, pointing you toward the wreck of the Brine Banshee. I don't have my game notes with me but I believe it is to the northwest.

GMDQ |

My memory of how the ring worked was slightly inaccurate. Please report to the game thread for its proper function.

Catching up now... we found a lovely home to rent in a good school district. Should have a post tonight. Oh, now on PST btw (in case I failed to mention that).

GMDQ |

I thought it was California, Maine... ;)
Lathiira, I am trying to track down upgrades made to the stronghold. I took poor notes, unfortunately, but I recall you were keeping track.
This is what I see has been done to the stronghold:
- Old giants' bunks into lodging
- "Graffiti room" (old cyclops dining area) into Kitchens and Common Room
- Consecrated/repaired altar
- Repaired lighthouse
- Observatory repaired (and your lodging added?)
- Drydock
What am I missing?
This isn't urgent but I'd like to at long last update the Ghoral Rey map. I assume after you finish this adventure you may check in on your stronghold since you are close by (and Chad and Chakam have not yet seen it, I don't think?).

Kahuranga |

How are we kitted for underwater adventuring? I have Water Lung hex, so I can give a minute of water breathing for a standard action.
So I can breathe water, and Taniwha is naturally amphibious. I also can use Vermin Shape 2 to be a water based insect, or for the mini-dragon.
Water Breathing with the hex will let me cast freely. I can also cast Freedom of Movement on myself or someone else as that makes moving easier.

Lathiira |

OK. My notes say it wasn't my lodgings but Lark's that were underway and should be done by now for our little home. The observatory was to be next, probably. Lark was going to have his own room, trophy room, war room, common room I think? I gotta check that out.
Thren wanted a little cubby in the observatory, the rooftop hatch fixed too of course.
Sandara can cast water breathing, I just haven't prepped spells for her yet.

Chakam |

On my regular “Rusalka” shape I am amphibious and I have a swim speed.

GMDQ |

I trust that it's Lark's lodgings that's done and not Thren's, but I'm certain the rooftop hatch is fixed (or will be upon your return).
Speaking of tracking things, can someone take over managing the "loot" spreadsheet since thermopyle/Lark had to leave us? It's fairly up to date, I think. I believe the items marked in green are in reserve as points of Plunder. Notably I see 9 elixirs of swimming that if you still have them you might consider making use of.

Kahuranga |

Sorry. Trying to figure out how to function underwater.
How do you interpret Freedom of Movement underwater? Flying works? Automatically make all swim checks? Trying to figure out if I need a swim speed.

Kahuranga |

Spells memorized:
Spell-Like Abilities (CL 8th; concentration +12)
1/day—feather fall
Witch Spell-Like Abilities (CL 8th; concentration +14)
At will—feather fall (self only), fly (self only)
1/day—levitate (self only)
Witch Spells Prepared (CL 8th; concentration +14)
4th—freedom of movement, summon monster IV (2)
3rd—haste, howling agony[UM] (DC 18), lightning bolt (2, DC 18)
2nd—cat's grace (4)
1st—comprehend languages, mage armor, nauseating dart[ACG] (DC 16), obscuring mist, ray of enfeeblement (2, DC 16)
0 (at will)—detect magic, read magic, stabilize, touch of fatigue (DC 15)

GMDQ |

Sorry. Trying to figure out how to function underwater.
How do you interpret Freedom of Movement underwater? Flying works? Automatically make all swim checks? Trying to figure out if I need a swim speed.
Mechanically, freedom of movement's effects are very precisely defined: the spell removes all penalties when under water--damage is not reduced, movement is normal (i.e., you can move at your base speed and do not need to attempt a Swim check), you are not off balance. You do not need a swim speed as long as this spell is active. If you lose the benefit of this spell and you do not have a swim speed, then your movement will be slowed and you will need to attempt Swim checks to be able to move at all.
Flying does not apply--freedom of movement or no, you cannot use a fly speed underwater any more than you could use a swim speed in mid air. Beyond mechanical definitions, I interpret the two movement speeds (and related skills) to involve specifics of maneuvering in the mediums--e.g., dealing with wind currents vs water currents, etc. I get what you are trying to determine--if the medium does not hinder your movement, does it matter? But given the two different movement types exist, and the spell clearly allows you to use your base speed in water, I'm inclined not to stretch it that far.

Would one of you guys pick up loot tracking? I track the stronghold stuff, the supplies to build things, but the regular loot and Plunder need a new caretaker.
Thren's going to likely get the observatory going next along with her quarters unless something else comes up. GMDQ, if you can find the cost of fixing the observatory up, let me know, that's one I can't find in our old discussions.

GMDQ |

In addition to picking up loot tracking (please someone else do it, as I will not; it's hard enough keeping track of all these NPCs!), it occurs to me you folks have not done much with your Infamy (this wasn't just to earn your way to free captaincy).
You have an Infamy of 21, which also gives you Disrepute Points in the same amount. You also get additional boons, and can purchase impositions with your Disrepute. Your Infamy is at the Despicable level, so you have the following boons:
* The Party may choose one favored port. They gain a +2 bonus on all Infamy checks made at that port.
* Once per week, the PCs can sacrifice a prisoner or crew member to immediately gain 1d3 points of Disrepute. This sacrifice is always fatal, and returning the victim to life (including allowing them to drown) results in the loss of 1d6 points of Disrepute. (I don't understand the "allowing them to drown" clause; this is a copy-paste)
For the second one, I'd argue you did that with Vakarla by turning her over to the Calistrians, but you have max Disrepute so you'd earn no extra points.
I'm mentioning this now because there are Impositions you can purchase with your Disrepute points that you may find useful on your ship. The list is here: Impositions You can buy from the first two sets.
One of your options is to spend 10 points to do this:
Besmara’s Blessings!: As a standard action, a PC on board her ship can cast animate rope, control water, remove curse, remove disease, or water breathing with a caster level equal to her character level.
I think y'all figured out the water breathing without but it occurred to me to check if this was an option, and it is.

I will take on loot tracking. Impositions can be a lot of fun.
The word sacrifice is a little strange there. Obviously we aren't the sorts of pirates who are going to murder our crew, but even for prisoners we have no use for, execute might make more sense.

Happy Thanksgiving all. I'm going to take a one day break (even though I'm cooking dinner for one this year) and get back to the game tomorrow. Hope whether you are with family or on your own or other circumstances, you are staying safe and being well.
===
Thanks for taking on the Loot tracking, Kahuranga. It is much appreciated. I believe the sheet was last updated prior to the fight with Vakarla, so the loot collected from that encounter needs to be tallied. I've gone ahead and searched the thread and am pasting the items you found here:
potion of cure moderate wounds
scroll of knock (arcane CL 3)
scroll of water breathing (arcane CL 5)
wand of shield (20 charges)
masterwork falchion
masterwork light crossbow with 10 bolts
cloak of resistance +2
a portable periscope (oddly, this does not look like it is designed to be attached to any sort of nautical vessel equipment, but something you could carry to perhaps hide in the water and peer out of it, or hide in something else and peer out of it)
a spyglass
a watertight scroll case with engraved bronze caps (empty)
spell component pouch
bicorn hat
The cutthroat has
studded leather (which he is still wearing as he is still alive)
falchion
light crossbow with 10 bolts
a throwing axe
A small pewter flask containing cheap rum
The chest contains the following:
a mithral dagger set with aquamarine gemstones worth 900 gp
320 gp in assorted coins
Shackles Ensign
A wizard's spellbook with the following spells: All core and APG wizard cantrips
1st level burning hands, color spray, disguise self, grease, mage armor, magic missile, minor image, ray of enfeeblement, vanish
2nd level blur, false life, fog cloud, invisibility, knock, mirror image, rope trick, scorching ray
3rd level fly, haste, invisibility sphere, major image, stinking cloud, water breathing, vampiric touch
4th level fear, hallucinatory terrain, phantasmal killer, wall of fire
5th level mirage arcana, overland flight, wall of force
Supplies found at Vakarla's camp:
Additionally, all the other barrels, as well as the supplies of rum and random sailor's kit in the other houses, which you guess has come from other ship's cargo, you have various goods (mainly timber, leather, and spices) and ship's supplies worth 6 points of plunder. If you reserved 1 point of plunder's worth of ship's supplies you'd be well stocked on your own ship for several months. The nature of the cargo is such that you could also cash out some of the plunder and use it to buy BP for your stronghold
As for the despicable boon, I think the idea of "sacrifice" is meant in the perfunctory sense of "give up/kill something to receive something." Not so much that in-character you are sacrificing a creature to a god, for example, but by killing them you gain these points. And yes,I believe the intent is executions or taking an action that effectively will result in the character's demise in a horrible way counts (which is why I would count turning over Vakarla to the Calistrians as such an act, because they are not going to make her demise quick or pleasant).

GMDQ |

So glad you actually got time off!
Hope all is well folks. I'm worried we may have lost Chad. He checked in a bit ago and confirmed he'd be joining back in but now he hasn't posted for a bit. Hoping perhaps holidays just have him preoccupied.

GMDQ |

If you need me to turn the monsters into fanged underwater seabunnies, I can do so. I don't mean to be facetious... if this is troubling in any way we do not have to keep this as is, or we can fastforward through combat.

GMDQ |

Apologies, folks, work is busy and I will update as soon as I can. If we're not able to wrap this up shortly I may attempt to fastforward to the end of the fight... I'd like to take a break for the holidays next week--I'm not doing much of anything, just need a break--so don't want to leave us in the middle of a fight before that happens.

Chakam |

Agreed - is it my turn? I don't know who it is - maybe we need to post an update saying who's supposed to go next.

GMDQ |

Folks, as I mentioned earlier, I'm taking an official break for at least the next 4-5 days. In addition to taking time off from the holidays, I need a GMing breather. I may check in as I'll occasionally poke around in my games where I am a player, but I need a formal break from running for a little bit, and give the brain a bit of a recharge.
Also, I fear we have officially lost Chad and I am questioning my resilience in continuing to manage the rotating cast of this game. Some time off may also help me see more clearly the best steps forward. I plan to see us to the end of this story arc at least. Your thoughts on the matter are welcome.
I've ended combat now with a withdrawal from the bad guys. They may (or may not) reappear later. You can use this time to consider next steps.
In the meanwhile, a joyous Yule, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year to you all.

Kahuranga |

Happy everything to everyone. Since I am a teacher, this is a time of relative peace for me. But I am fighting battles with my family. Feels like my nuclear family are almost the only people I know who are still isolating and trying to stay safe. Which is ironic, since we all had the virus back in August.
I was reminded by a Reddit post tonight that I should say thank you to GMDQ for GMing this adventure. I have very few opportunities to play, being sort of an ever-GM, whether face to face or via PbP. This has been the longest running PbP campaign I've been a player in, so if it needs to end soon I would call it a win! Thank you for including me.
As for continuing without Chad, I had been considering taking Leadership as my 9th level feat. I was thinking of taking Caulky, though I think that might present some story problems later. Caulky doesn't seem tanky enough for what we need in the party. I know that Kahuranga feels exposed when he can't cast spells from behind someone a little more in the "wall of flesh" role.

GMDQ |

Hello folks. Plan to get an in-game post up tomorrow. (In addition to needing a break I got some kind of sinus crud/ear infection (that has also mildly triggered my asthma) I am trying to rest and recover from. I went to urgent care earlier in the week and tested negative for COVID to be sure it wasn't that, and I am pretty sure it's not so that's good at least.)
Chakam definitely serves well as a tank so I think we are okay on that front.
Regarding taking Caulky with Leadership--that's fine with me and as far as I know it does not cause problems with the story, as recruiting her is given as an option in the story where you did indeed recruit her (it just notes she'll be reluctant). She is a commoner/rogue-knife master and for cohort purposes I would allow her commoner levels to be rebuilt into rogue or fighter (or another appropriate allowed non-spellcasting base class within reason and suitability for the character). You could also consider someone like Rosie who is a fighter, or Cog who is a fairly tanky ranger/rogue, although Cog is Chakam's mate so that might be a bit odd. Anyone who gets chosen as a cohort will be leveled in their class to the appropriate level of a cohort, regardless of current level. You have to keep the existing feats/skills of the character's build but I am again, okay with switching the NPC class levels to a PC class. Lathiira I can't remember, did I have you level Sandara or did I give you my version of a leveled Sandara that you then tweaked?

Lathiira |

You gave me a leveled Sandara that I tweaked. I didn't tweak her much, mind, and I try not to look at her skills because ugh.
Let's remember one thing if we choose Leadership. Cohorts are lower level than their PC counterparts. Building a tank cohort means you've got a front-liner who is at most level 6. Not to mention lightly armored like the rest of us, in all likelihood. Not likely to work too well. Without a serious rebuild at any rate.

GMDQ |

BTW I am waiting for y'all to describe what you are doing/if and how you are approaching.

GMDQ |

HAving some minor technical difficulties folks, will get a post up as soon as I can.

Chakam |

I’ll post tomorrow! Out of a computer now.
