A small band of mariners find themselves press-ganged into service on the Wormwood, led by the fearsome Barnabas Harrigan. Will they turn their misfortune to glory on the high seas, or will folly lead them to an ignominious watery death?

Lee could use the bracers...

Sadly, not really.

The bracers are 'Armor' and I don't think they stack with the Mage Armor spell. For defense, Lee could use Deflection, Natural Armor or Dodge bonus-y things. When we get Bracers +5 they will outperform the Mage Armor spell.

Selling Orisilir's carapace is fine with Lee. Stockpiling Goods is a good plan. Paying the crew now will give them a chance to have their money and not be aflame with the feeling fo new wealth if we wait to pay them in port. However, they could gamble it all away here on the island. Can we give them the option to let them hold their pay or us hold their pay? Would we be responsible if the payroll storage was lost?

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Just playing devil's advocate... they don't stack with the mage armor spell, no, but using them frees you a spell slot for something else--yes, you are a sorcerer and have lots of spell slots but they can be used up and sometimes you may want that one more magic missile. And while I think magic items can be suppressed with a targeted dispel, someone casting dispel magic will aim at active warding spells before magic items. Plus you can always cast mage armor for the additional +2 armor bonus but still have a better magic-less AC when you don't get it cast or the spell is dispelled.

You could also learn or at 8th level swap mage armor for shield (which is a shield bonus and stacks with the bracers) and that spell, unlike mage armor, gets automatically shared with Muffin.

I see your reasoning, just noting there are reasons your GM is making this available to you now, and may not again soon.

Orsilir's shell is worth, let's say, 1 plunder/1000 gp?

Quote:

It's not like the total wealth between them is going anywhere since they don't have anyone to gamble with but each other. Morale may also go up for them having something to gamble with.

You'd need a secure place to lock it away. Lee is Quartermaster so it is up to him to obtain such a thing if he determines it is necessary. He does not need to consult the rest of the party to do so (but this is not to say it's a bad idea for his player to discuss it with everyone else).

Quote:

Lee, specifically, as quartermaster would be held responsible by a likely unruly and very tall crew. :)

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

I think 1 plunder for Orsilir's shell is fair. Though it occurs to me maybe we should save it for our first trip to the dragon perhaps and let him have it?

Forces of Nature Battlemap

ETA: There are lockable storage units in the Besmara's Whim. I've got to dig up the first book to see what the DCs are (and put any relevant info on the ship reference).

Wow, good for remembering your relationship with Kelizar. :)

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

It never strays far from Thren's thoughts, let me assure you. I just don't know how long till our first delivery is due.

Lee already has the Shield spell.

Alss, on a side note, Gencon us upon us. I'm flying out Wednesday morning and will be in and out of touch until Monday. If we get to an 'adventury' thing botting may be the best solution.

Also, since there's no secure place for the crew to 'bank', we should just pay them. If a problem arises we can fix it

Forces of Nature Battlemap

I'll be heading out on vacation Thursday, and while I expect to check in with my phone it'll be slow. I'll try to leave us in a fairly easy spot, not waiting for a combat result or something (although I don't think it will be a shocking spoiler if I suggest there probably is some combat related to island exploration).

Question - do you pay your crew before or after Luna's ship leaves?

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

I'd say we should pay them before Luna leaves. If they want to do some gambling or shopping while she's there, that (and the consequences) are on them.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

Also, both of you enjoy your trips and time off!

I agree with paying the crew before Luna departs.

I'm sure we need to do some math and book keeping - I'll try and contribute to that in the loot document.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

Definitely. We need to know how much loot we got, how much Plunder we got. We'll want that info next time we hit civilization in case I need to make some serious rolls to boost our Infamy. Not to mention determine what we're gonna buy from Luna before she's back out to sea.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Just FYI I'm waiting for you to resolve your shopping and so forth. Let me know when you are ready to proceed.

I'm sorry I'm holding us up - work has been unexpectedly busy and time-consuming the last few days. I will carve out some time tomorrow, but it may not be until the evening.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

No worries, and I wasn't thinking you specifically, just looking for what y'all are doing and making sure you finish shopping and the like.

I am headed out of town tomorrow. Again I'll check on my phone when I can but it may be Intermittent.

The 2e Playtest Rollout will also be tomorrow and I anticipate servers will be slammed. If we just end up pausing here until early next week (when the Norv will be home as well) that's okay too.

While we pause, here are some numbers to think about:

Drakerider's craftspeople x 14 days = 28 labor -280
50 Goods from Drakerider -900
Pay the crew -1527
Bracers of armor +2 -4000
Potion of CMW -300
Efficient Quiver -1800
Potion/oil of cat's grace -300
Wand of burning hands -750

I say we blow the bank and buy it all!

We can pay for all of this and have ~9k gp left over. Most of that remainder (7k+) is tied up in the Redclaw (that fancy prosthetic arm) and Osilir's shell (earmarked for the Kelizar). This will also depend on Drakerider taking most of the payment in the valuables we've been acquiring for a while now (jewels, art goods, etc.).

The crew payment is a bit of guesstimate. It's roughly 76 gp per person (a little more for junior officers). It's based on taking a fraction of the loot we gathered and dividing it into shares. It's a fraction of our loot since we've been off on our own so much. I couldn't find any notes about pay per day, only shares of loot. Let me know if it seems way off.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

You're the Captain, you ultimately set the rules for pay, but this seems very reasonable, and they will be happy for it.

Yes, plunder can effectively be "cashed" for its value (this means that it is more effective than just selling it, but give this is a loot driven game I believe it is ok), but narratively yes, you're paying Drakerider in the pretty things you've found.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

If we have the funds, then let's go ahead and buy all of it. That done, what shall we do with the leftover moolah? Thoughts?

Save it to buy more supplies for the island and the Whim next time we hit a port? There's not all that much if we don't sell the Redclaw.

Saving the shell for Kelizar is a cool idea. I'm torn between saving the Redclaw as a show piece for if/when we get the Fearsome Tide seaworthy or liquidating it. I'm leaning toward saving it, but if anyone has a shopping list that's fine too.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

Well, I know it's not the wisest idea-it's silly at the least-but I thought attaching the Redclaw to Cog might be interesting. But let's not and say we didn't.

Figure out how much we need to have left exactly. Just so we know what we have in case of emergency. Don't forget you need your Dex drain taken care of from dealing with Orsilir. Also, is this including the liquidation of the plunder? Sounds like it at any rate, just want to be sure.

Now, who gets which items? Besides giving Lee the bracers at any rate.

Human Rogue 8 [HP 64/84 AC 20 T 13 FF 15 | CMD 19 | Fort+5, Ref+9, Will+6 | Init+8 Perc/sight+12/+8]

Yes, this includes trading the plunder to Drakerider. After this we'll have 2,268 gp in cash, the shell, the Redclaw and a couple of gems.

How about:

Lee, Bracers of armor +2, Wand of burning hands

Thren, Efficient Quiver

Lark, Potion of CMW

Potion/oil of cat's grace - we hang the potion in a tree, Thren and Lark race up to it, Thren wins and takes the potion ;)

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

Given that last fight with the golem, Lark should take it as you couldn't hit the broad side of a glass golem and that would help :) Thren can cast cat's grace as it is.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

I wrote a post yesterday to weak up a few things and then my phone ate it. Will try again soon, but apologies for the delay. Crappy weather + mountains keep making the network reset.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

I've got a question: prior to Luna showing up, we were working on the drydock. How much Labor did we contribute towards its completion?

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

The drydock requires 16 labor. You had 6. You could make up the remainder in a GP costs, but iirc you have never declared that you would. (This is fine to retcon)

Assuming you "purchased" the necessary labor, 2 weeks have passed, so you need 2 more weeks to completion. If you haven't the "labor" to "spend", then work hasn't started. For simplicity's sake I am assuming you "spend" capital ahead of time at the start of the project, otherwise trying to track everything gets way too confusing.

Please search the thread or check links in the campaigns tab to review costs, as I can't do heavy duty info checks where I am at the moment.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

I got the costs, that's no problem. The team of craftsmen will provide more than sufficient labor, and you had said that if we PCs worked we'd be able to supply one point of Labor per day. Consider this more like 'how much time has passed'. I'll buy our Labor out of pocket, that's not an issue. We can put the Craftsmen team to work on generating Labor for other projects. Thanks!

"Assuming you "purchased" the necessary labor" -- I should have added "and other capital required to start the project."

Sounds fine.

Question for GMDQ:
Do the bracers resize?

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

We had the other capital thanks to your generous starting endowment, just needed Labor. So it's covered and we can build the drydock :)

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Fabulous.

KeefX -- yes, I believe this is in the rules and I enforce it with houseruling even further for things beyond clothing -- unless a magic item is built very specifically for a type of creature, it resizes to the user. So horseshoes of a zephyr will not resize to your hands and feet (though they will adjust to a donkey or draft horse) but the bracers are good to go.

This is also why you are able to take the Quick Runner's shirt originally worn by a Hag (Large, IIRC) and then Lark (Medium).

My houserule makes this apply to weapons as well, as I think it's stupid to find a magic sword no one in the party can use, etc.

I have returned (a day early) from my trip. I was going to do some camping and it kept raining (after staying in indoor lodging a few nights).

As soon as I decided to head home the clouds fled the sky and the forecast actually changed to sun for the next three days rather than rain.

The things I do to help the East Coast.

(Rest assured I saw all I wanted to -- and indeed then some -- I was never going terribly far anyway.)

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

People will appreciate the alleviation of the flooding you're providing.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

I've got some pictures of the Potomac flowing through--and I mean through--the trees. (Luckily, where this was, even though the town has been hit hard by floods before, there was not bad flooding into the living areas itself.)

I've not gone to see but apparently the Jones Falls is in pretty bad shape too. It's bad when you're traveling and you see pictures of your hometown on the Weather Channel in the hotel.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Oh, PS KeefX -- a few items can thusly be used on your familiar. Most are designed for humanoids, but I believe amulets and some rings are okay?

I suppose since it is a cat, I should allow footwear and headgear as well. ;)

(I am not actually allowing footwear and headgear. :( )

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

The rain keeps coming and different places flood. Funny, I didn't think the East Coast got monsoons. Now though I think we should start getting used to the idea of a rainy season.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

I'd probably allow Muffin to wear bracers too, but that's just me. If we can't have Puss in Boots, probably not:)

I think y'all have our rain. The lakes and streams here in upstate NY are running a bit low this summer.

GMDQ - welcome back. Sounds like a good trip even cut short.

Lee's finding himself with an extra set of Bracers and thought to put them onto Muffin (as Muffin doesn't have access to Mage Armor like Lee does).
Will that work?

Forces of Nature Battlemap

No, bracers don't work on animals. You'd need something crafted to fit on a quadruped.

I'm fully back now! Apologies for the prolonged honeymoon, but I should be able to post much more regularly (albeit slightly jetlagged).

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Welcome back!

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

How dare you go on your honeymoon instead of game! What kind of gamer are you? ;)

Edit: I mean, besides the happily married kind, that is!

It's good to be back in the MD.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Welcome back from Gencon!

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Emberar, would you please put your stats in the "microstat" format in your race/class fields? Helps me reference your battle stats in game which is helpful.

I realized that I'd forgotten to do Muffin's level up and transformation. Please look for that shortly.

Whoops, sorry! Not sure how I forgot that.

Figures my first two attack rolls are under 10...

Does anyone else use mobile devices to post frequently? If so, is there a way to edit an alias on a mobile device? The button seems to have disappeared after that last update...

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

You get used to the quirks of the RNG aka the Crankipator.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

I do use my phone sometimes and yes, I can't find the edit button on the mobile version either.
