Since we've entered "They go, you go territory, I'll be more adaptive on init order."
Desmond charges forward, but finds one of the squares (Red on the map) to be a lot softer underneath the top! Reflex: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24 He moves fast enough to make his way through without being entangled, however, and finishes his charge! The DC doesn't translate well from easyrules to the full set plus promising 10X the blood generated from killing a wolf in one hit, a small portion of the nature-loving crowd turns to your favor a little, emphathizing with Desmond! "That wolf didn't do nothing!" "You're here to eat gladiators, not animals!" The announcer, noticing the trend, rides the hype train. "When a boy loses a dog, he cries! When a man loses a dog, he takes a greatsword to the killer!"
Friendly: The crowd is beginning to be swayed toward one side in the fray. Audience members cheer when that side achieves some impressive feat in the combat, and their reaction grants a +1 morale bonus on all attack rolls, combat maneuver checks, ability checks, skill checks, and saving throws for their chosen side. This is a mind-affecting effect.

I can't edit the map but Súrë should have five-footed over to L5 last round and Ilivan is somewhere above the beast right now.
Súrë calls his bird back to him as he cautiously moves forward (J13) to get behind Desmond. Along the way he pulls out another shortspear and keeps his shield up. "Guard me!" he orders Ilivan, who flies directly above him.
Readied action from Ilivan, I suppose.

Súrë moves forward, but finds the square next to the one Desmond almost got caught up in to be incredibly soft as well! He finds himself entangled* in said square!
*not the actual condition; see below
A creature that steps into or lands in a square with a shifting sands pit must succeed at a DC 20 Reflex save or become entangled until it can succeed at a DC 15 Swim check as a move action or DC 20 Escape Artist check as a standard action to escape to an adjacent square.
This was 35 feet after starting to move, so your turn is done.

Though her eyes see the event, Luisila’s brain doesn’t register what just happened to Sahrek … yet.
Like a Numerian construct she moves forward up to 30’ in Varg’s footsteps and takes a cold iron pot-shot at the beast.
I can’t see the map, but had a look before I walked out the door. Can someone please put me in a spot 25’ from the front rank, so I can reach (ideally) any one of you to cast a touch spell next round.
CI Longbow – Soft Cover: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 8 - 4 = 6

As she observes Desmond’s reaction, a ridiculous quote from an award winning actor plays through her mind. Hold it together now, girl. **A League of Their Own** There’s no crying in b… loodsports.
She cries out. “Four Fists of Karela, one of you will receive the divine right to mete out Agony next turn, if you wait for it.”
Omrax the Bold |
Wow - 69 posts since this morning. That was a lot to read. And Omrax did not miss his turn...but sounds like poor Sahrek did
Seeing his friends charge into melee, the paladin drops his bow and draws his longsword as he moves (double move) forward.
"Hold on Sir Desmond! I am on my way. Blue dragonkin, I will smite thee for your actions!"
Guessing the smite (swift) is ineffective, but Omrax does not know or care since he has several to burn at this point. I believe he can make it to the square just north of "Sa" with his 40' move.

This fight is terrifying. Súrë or Ilivan could easily be one-shotted by this freaking thing.

Dang, I was hoping I'd have more time while she was working on swallowing my best friend whole.
Desmond drops his greatsword and quick-draws his dagger. He does his best to take a couple of swipes at the blue lizard before he joins his lupine companion in the bowels of this strange creature.
Should've listened to Baz...

Power Attack: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 5 - 2 = 19
Damage: 1d4 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 4 = 10
I'm sure there are some modifiers to my attack due to being grappled, but I'm not sure what they are. And I doubt I could beat this thing's CMD to break the grapple.
GM Burglar |
Runnin' things wrong (as usual) note: I was wrong, having mostly fought creatures with Fast Swallow & Swallow Whole, never just the latter. It'd drop the wolf, not waste a standard eating it (though that's not bad for monetary reasons later, ja?) Nothing really changes (and worked out by not possibly provoking for anyone else entering, I'd say.) Would this have changed anyone's actual actions?
---
@Sure: I know, right? Pretty good for an actual arena fight. Just imagine if it didn't have the Young template for high-low scaledown.

The long and the short of it are "When you're grappled, if the grapple-ee is attacking the grappler, the penalties on each side negate each other." So you're good there.

Mini update!
@Omrax: The QuickDraw Shield unfortunately uses your swift action to actually equip, though it says you were only drawing it, so Performance check happens (unless you're equipping it with the swift. If you hadn't magicked it already, making it a Quickdraw and Throwing Shield (Ult Equip) is usually the best bet for impromtu shield action.

@Asuna/Varg: Looks like Asuna's only flank chance is if Varg walks around the beast (which isn't too bad, given his lack of iteratives and the enemy's current grappled state.

"That's the end of round 1!"
---
The announcer continues, giving chance for a deathblow to be delivered. "And Shocrote goes down! Looks like she wasn't made for the big leagues, folks! Fighting convicts and fighting gladiators is two different things, after all! She should'a read the contract about that raise she got!"
The crowd, knowledgeable of flashy weapons like the school of fuse grenades, are chanting a mixture of praise for his Knights, laments for his wolf, and a few requests to feed it the grenade (though logic dictates that the grenade could go of, literally, in 6 seconds and is probably a bad idea.) Though feel free to posthumously desribe what youre doing (but if it takes more than 3 rounds, be sure to take the grenade damage. Somehow interposing the body of Shocrote between you and the grenade will block line-of-effect and damage, so sayeth the DM.)
---
Regardless of what occurs, the announcer laughs to himself (through the microphone) as the pellet grenade goes off. "All right, folks, now that that's done, we'll give the Knights their mandatory 'Minute in Heaven!' and keep this gore cart rolling!" Whatever the phrase means, the crowd quiets down some aside from a few still-enthused individuals about their adoration for the group. Included (but not limited to) in the crowd are:
---
The announcer gestures for all you to return to the waiting room just past gates. Inside, a referee explains what 'One Minute in Heaven' means, as quickly as possible (and using as many hand gestures as he can squeeze into the moment.) "Okay, long story short, you guys can heal, but only heal. Bigger picture: Between successive rounds, each progressing team gets one minute to cast spells or use effects that can heal themselves or one another. Any other effects, which is overseen by our local magical referee. Don't talk to the ref, don't hit the ref, don't hit on the ref, just don't give him a reason to think you're trying to distract him or you can be disqualified. There's an issue going on outside, so this explanation won't be taking any of your time. Good luck." He then motions for the gate to be raised a little bit as he squeezes past the pointy bits. You guys have 10 rounds of healing. Please post if you're doing ANYTHING magical that's not Lay on Hands, Cure Whatever Wounds, etc. etc.
Outside, while you heal, said issue is in review by the to which you just spoke referee with a bullhorn. "Randall 'Scaledown' Marks of the Silver Slayers has been found in violation of unsanctioned knowledge of the Shifting Sands hazard. The penalty is the nullification of the hazard for today's Grievance event and his disqualification without replacement. The event will still occur by decree of Ullorth Ungin."
~~~ After your minute of healing ~~~
The Ref stops by to the Wizard Ref to see if everything's on the up-and-up. Assuming it is, the party is gestured out just as before. You can rearrange yourselves within the green squares.
After exiting with no additional introduction, the Announcer announces the Silver Slayers. "What you've been waiting for, folks! They don't need no introduction here, but how will she handle without the terrain advantage?!? Hel-----kit Sil------verba---ne and her Sil--ver Sla----yers!"
A none-too-happy Helkit, two humans, and a thylacine with a exit the other gates and await the starting gong. The men have javelins, tridents, a shield, and breastplate (though they carry tridents in hand and shield on arm.) The thylacine is bare, though quite strong-looking. Here's an image of Helkit.
She is premeiring this new beast-friend, though, rescued from one of the many dead nations of the River Kingdoms, but the announcer will get into that soon enough.
Luisila |
Keeping well away from the grenade, thanks GM!
Luisila fans herself rapidly with both hands and breathes deeply, as she listens gratefully to the referee’s explanation about healing being permitted during the ‘one minute in heaven.’
Luisila searches Desmond’s face. “Des, I’m so sorry about Sahrek. Let’s finish the Slayers and then you can work out what you want to do, OK?”
Sweet Cali! I was just as worried for Des there towards the end of the fight with that … monster is the only word for it. Great team work again!
“Remember Helkit is likely to enlarge herself, so the melee crew might want to get inside her reach quickly to avoid any opportunistic attacks.”
“I still want to cast Burst of Radiance first – then Instrument of Agony. Desmond, I think it’s more efficient for me to cast Instrument of Agony on your bow. But if you prefer to use your greatsword, absolutely no worries. I’ll work out something else.”
EDIT: Oh good idea, Omrax. I keep forgetting how many ‘lay on hands’ abilities Omrax has now. If GM Burglar agrees, I’ll take back the last channel. I do want to make sure Des is back to full health, though.
"Sir Desmond, I regret we could not revive your companion. A brave and loyal creature Sahrek was. If you need healing, or anything else I can provide, just name it and I will do my best to serve. "
Omrax recovers his bow. He will start with sword and shield this time. He has no other special actions beyond healing of others as needed.
Desmond Aesculus |
Desmond keeps the blue dragon-thing between himself and the grenade. AS the creature dies and the group is escorted out of the arena, Desmond picks up the body of his dead animal companion. He does his best to keep stoic, but anyone getting a close look can see a couple of tears making their way down his cheeks. When they are able to take their break, Desmond catches his breath and allows himself to be healed by Luisila and Omrax.
If two channels are used and two of Omrax's Lay on Hands, the I'll be fine.
Desmond simply nods at the words that Luisila and Omrax offer for consolation. "Thank you for the healing. I did not realize that beast would be as dangerous as it was. I don't know if I want to try and raise him from the dead, or try and find another...but thank you for the kind words. I just wish my stupidity hadn't caused his doom."
"Gozreh, make my bow heavy to my enemies. Guide my arrows."
Cast gravity bow. Lasts 3 minutes.
Luisila |
Copycat Round 2/6
Luisila notes the path of Baz’s arrow, takes a 5’ step to M6 behind Desmond and *casts* Instrument of Agony on the ranger’s bow.
Desmond’s bow jumps suddenly in his hand and emits a menacing and eerily familiar GROWL.
