Page Description wrote:

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 3–7.

As an act of retribution, an enemy of the society begins hiring river pirates to waylay Pathfinder boats bound for the crusader nation of Mendev. Unless the Pathfinders can track down the party responsible and put an end to their piracy, the raids may spell the doom of the society’s ambitions to the north.

Content in "You Have What You Hold" also contributes directly to the ongoing storyline of the Sczarni faction.

For a city founded upon bloody combat traditions, Tymon is surprisingly docile. Weapons are invariably peace-bonded, there is a lack of muscle-flexing machismo in the streets—even public disputes are scarcer than in comparably large settlements. Rule of law here is strong, perhaps, or else violent urges are simply sated vicariously through the famed Arena of Aroden.

Whatever the cause, little impedes the swift journey to Smine’s Weaponworks, locally famous as a place of business but secretly also a Pathfinder lodge. The sound of ringing steel and the withering heat of the forge through an open sliding door identify the stone structure as readily as its well-painted but soot-stained sign. Several apprentices work blades in various stages of completion, and at the largest work area toils a smiling dwarf: famed weaponsmith and venture-captain Holgarin Smine. He glances up under singed eyebrows, never missing a beat as he says, "Ah. It’s you. A moment." After putting some final touches on a spearhead, quenching it in water, and nodding approvingly after a brief appraisal, he unties his apron and opens the door into the adjoining building.

Within a few minutes, Smine has set out simple (but delicious) refreshments such as bread and cheese in a much cooler kitchen, inviting all in with a wave. "Forgive me for not asking about your journey. Love the details, but those can wait. Someone’s picking a fight—with us," he divulges in broken sentences reminiscent of the staccato clanging of the adjacent forge. "You might know we’re committed to supporting Mendev. Important business, that. Worldwound expanding, wardstones failing. Not good for anyone. So when we send supplies north and they’re stolen, it gets our attention. And that’s been happening. Months now. Boat after boat heading up the Sellen, attacked, looted—always a few days out of Tymon. Now, River Kingdoms shipping isn’t always chancy; brigands on the water are nothing new. Not like this, though."

"And it isn’t all shipping. Just ours. Someone is targeting us." The dwarf, hands cleaned of the dirt of the forge, picks up a dinner roll. "It’s my job to get to the bottom of this, and I have a notion how. Been told you lot were just what I needed." He rips the bun in half, and places some cheese inside and begins to eat. "So here’s what’s going to happen. We’re not just going to find these pirates; we’re going to flush ’em out. They want to hit Pathfinders? Pathfinders can hit, too. They’ll think they’ve got another soft supply boat, but the cargo will be you. Ready to fight." He grins before concluding, "You’re bait. But you’re bait that bites back." He begins eating his impromptu cheese sandwich. "Questions?"

He seems to value hard work and straight-talk. We ARE bait – but at least he’s up front about it.

The half-elf speaks in a serious tone. “It seems odd that only Pathfinder shipping is targeted. Almost like … someone is letting our enemy know which ships to hit.”

“Is it possible there is a leak somewhere in our organization in Tymon? Finding and interrogating opposing agents might make our job easier.”

“Who operates the boat we’re travelling on? Are we expected to do that ourselves? Any idea of numbers or tactics of the pirates?”

Shattering the veil of immersion (cleanliness spoiler, not secret):
Here's the lowdown on the next section. You'll have one night (and die-roll per player) to prove to the sailors in the city of Tymon that you're awful sailors and that you're part of the crew carrying the Pathfinder's next shipment (and should be easy to raid.) In short, you describe what you're doing to present yourself as a landlubber of the highest caliber and make a single check. If I deem it a skill that's not applicable (which shouldn't be an issue with this group, but I want all disclaimers in the open), I'll have the die-roll carry with some other skill and description. Additionally, this is an all-night check, so single-round buff (like Bit of Luck) will NOT be applying.

I cannot express enough that this does NOT mean you need Bluff to make a check. The scenario-given examples This is a moment of skill creativity, one of my favorite in PFS. I'll list a citation below.

This act is "acting with Dishonor" in my book, though, so... you might just want to send Omrax to buy all the alchemical items... or whatever... I mean, he likes his Paladin powers, right? He could gather information for the night, or something, too, I suppose. I do have the Gazetteer for this nation.

And, no, trying something and rolling really low doesn't help succeed at looking horrible, as weird as it is (even if it's the character being legitimately bad at being a sailor). Such an event pretty much leaves me to depict the crowd's perceving as good. E.g. Rolling bad on swim shows of your superior muscle tone or endurance, trying to tie knots badly with Prof Sailor causes you to actually tie a REALLY good knot, etc.

OOC Talk:
So, the way I'm wrapping my head around this is that we are essentially making a bluff check, but can use a different skill? So, if we roll a really high Swim Check, then we are able to thrash around like we can't keep ourselves afloat - to fool them. But if we roll low, then they see through the ruse?

I think I have the idea. Now I need to think of what to do.

Male Bear Burglar 1

Desmond: Correct, if it helps you understand it that way. Other interpretations for "failing" a Swim attempt could be "You try to dive off something, but you instinctively keep yourself afloat enough to not garner enough attention" or "You do actually start to drown, but someone saves you, and that person happens to be part of the crew tomorrow / is another PC" etc. It all depends on how silly I'm feeling what I can think up at the moment. I encourage you all to help describe other people's failures; it should prove to be less work for me a good team-building exercise.

Do note that just because you don't need Bluff for this lying attempt, doesn't mean you can't use it.

Desmond's attempt at animal control is taken with the laughter it deserves.

Súrë eventually arrives to the Flooded Sands, which by his arrival, has filled with people of many sorts. He finds a table and gets buzzed immediately. Many of the sailors scoff and laugh at his "butterflies," until a grizzled old man with a mithral eye who carries many clay jars approaches. He waves his hands around at all the patrons and chastises them. "Idiots! All of you!"

He picks a rock he acquired as a setting piece and puts it in the palm of his hand and speaks to them. "You fools know nothing of the natural world, but this man! A savant! A genius with the eyes of an eagle!" He then closes his hand and seemingly crushing the rock. "This here's a Norgorban Beetle of Ascension!" He releases his hand, and out flies a small beetle, though it is now of a faintly-glowing silver on a black shell that makes no noise as it flies. It flashes twice before seemingly winking out of existence, though the flashing continues (with no obvious source.)

"Yes, sir! Nobody's ever found one of these in the presence of a licensed True Entomologist of Golarion League! Not until now, at least!" He flashes a badge, which identified him of his very nerdy super-club. He turns to Súrë and continues, still quite loud. "Your name will go down in the books for this one!" He takes one of the jars and scoops though the air, as if a bug were flying there (which ceases the on-and-off glowing.) "They say those who find said Beetles of Ascension are blessed by the Ascended above! Meet with me before the week is through and I will be sure to get all of your information down."

The more perceptive individuals present notice a few patrons have weaseled their way out of the tavern after the emergence of the bug and its significance, but have otherwise avoided any detection.

Varg drinks heartily with Des.

Another two...buuuurp...if ya will?

Varg plops a silver on the bar for two mnore meads.

I'm not fer boats meself, but I can climb like a monkey. Doesna' all boats have sails and rope thingies?

Varg chugs his second mead, then belches again loudly before stepping away from the bar with a bit of an unsteady step.

I will bet....buuuuurp...anyone 5 silvers that I can shimmy up the front of this place across the top and down the back in less than 5 minutes...right after another.

He chugs the second mead he just bought, and throws 5 sp on the bar.

BUUUUUURP! Any takers?

He will wait a moment, and even without any, he saunters unsteadily out the front door, hoping a crowd gathers.

He then feigns climbing up the front by falling twice to the ground before dusting himself off and heading back in.

I'm guessin' that I may be no help on this damn boat...I need another pint.

Though convincing of his ability to fall, Varg fails to gather even a few people, as a quiet stir gathers inside the tavern. "Did you see? He talked about the Reaper of Reputation, and then some men vanished! Maybe they were from from Daggermark?" "I bet someone 'removed' when the man was speaking! It was quite a distraction! He's probably a killer himself!" "I don't trust the look in his eye...", and other talk of assassins and whatnot.

He actually has a couple ranks in sailing. He is actually being truthful rather than a con, which goes against his character. He will don his leather armor and a dagger.

Making her way inside of the tavern, the blonde woman begins to visually search the patrons looking for any telltale signs of affiliation.

Luisila has a Wayfinder clipped to her belt, Asuna.

On the way to the tavern, Luisila eyes Súrë’s collection of bugs warily. She puts her nose very close to the sylph’s and points her index finger at him.

“I’d better not find one bug in my bedroll, Súrë. I don’t serve the Goddess of Turn the Other Cheek, you know.”

There is a short delay before Luisila enters the tavern. During that time she visits the naval stores area and buys alchemist’s kindness (1gp). Once she enters the tavern she drops 5 sp on the bar saying.

“Honey Mead for me, barkeep. And keep ‘em coming ‘til I say stop.”

8cp each – that should be enough for half a dozen meads, GM Burglar.

The priestess then reports to Sailing Master, Súrë and snaps off a salute.

“Sir, I attended the naval stores as ordered. The armourer regrets to say he doesn’t have any of the left-handed cutlasses, you asked me to requisition.”

“Similarly, the purser’s store was all out of that striped paint you wanted.”

After her ninth mead, Luisila is feeling little pain.

If Asuna is agreeable, Luisila will take the kitsune by the hand and sit her down at a table for a chat.

“I’m Luisila. Tell me something about yourself, Asuna.”

Just as the newcomer opens her mouth, Luisila interrupts her and rambles on … not very coherently.

“Last misshun ... Poor Varg took a minor wound and I was toooooo far away to heal him. You know instead of moving as quickly as I could t'wards him, I very nearly cast a spell – that prob'ly wouldn’t have made any diffrunce … then next round, WHAM! He goes down! Hard! If I had of cast that stoopid spell instead of moving forward, he might of died … and it would have been all my fault!”

The half-elf starts sobbing for about thirty seconds but then stops and wipes her eyes and blows her nose with a tissue she pulls out of her pocket. A worm falls out of the tissue, as she lifts it up to her eyes.

“Anyway enough of me ... Let’s hear about you ... What do you think about me?”

"This must be them. If we have learned anything since leaving the forest and coming to this part of the world, it is that its people are weird." Asuna thinks to herself as she is pulled towards the half-elf's table. She readjusts her scythe on her back to allow herself to sit and listens to the two strangers talk.

Raising an eyebrow towards Desmond she directs the subject towards the mission. "There are going to be boats? Again? We don't feel very good when we travel on boats." She admits while thinking to herself. "Who told this man we are a kitsune?"

Asuna always wears her human form, except in extreme circumstances. Unless someone mentioned what she really is (Which is totally possible! Run with it if you want.) it is a DC 27 Perception to see through her illusion.

Asuna then finally manages to edge a few words into the conversation with Luisila. "We hail from a great forest in the land of Tian Xia, and were requested to come here and assist the pathfinders with missions. So far we have met many interesting people, but we have also had to ride many boats. We do not do so well on boats, they make us sick. She then gives a slight pause as if to banish the thought, then continues ignoring the worm. "It is good you saved your friend Varg. Are you an accomplished healer?"

Asuna arrives, late as usual, while Baz and Luisila's acts are well-received by all but the Insect Scientist (who is very intent on discussing nature with Sure and his theories on the mating habits of the River Kingdoms' own Giant Mountain Beetle.) As she looks at Asuna over the top of mug of mead #10, Luisila begins to have an inkling that she might have had enough to drink.

Why does she keep calling herself ‘we?’ “Why do you keep calling yourself ‘we?’"

Luisila is drunk enough to start going cross-eyed.

Oh I get it! There’s two of her!

To the kitsune's polite enquiry about Luisila’s healing skills, the priestess gives a drunken wave, nearly sending a number of glasses flying off the table.

“I do my best and I haven’t lost anyone yet but …" Luisila will put her head in closer to the ninja’s and say quietly. “I do worry about that first mistake I make ...”

Luisila comes to the drunken realization: “Hey, you’re really nice! You’re gonna fitin great! But I think … I think I’ve got a lot to do tomorrow, so …”

Luisila starts bellowing at the top of her voice.

“WHERE’S OMRAX? I WANT OMRAX TO PUT ME TO BED! RIGHT NOW!! WHERE IS HE? VARG, WHERE’S OMRAX? I WANT HIM TO PUT ME TO BED!! OMRAX! WHERE ARE YOOOOU!!!”

Yah. I know Omrax is not in the tavern. I think that would just extend Luisila’s drunken performance.

Good point about the DC 27 Perception check. Luisila won’t realize Asuna is a kitsune until the morning!

Burglar, I must admit that until recently I didn’t realize there were TWO 'veil of immersion' spoiler posts. I think I only read the second one. That’s why I made >1 skill check. My apologies, but it doesn’t look like I did much harm.

@Luisila: Ha, but didn't you assign yourself a -2 perception from drinking earlier? That'd explain your explanation, though, do ho ho! While there is two of many people here, there are 0 Omraxes in sight.

Omrax (whom I didn't totally forget posted) legitimately learns some new sailor knots, used locally for river travel (as opposed to the open-water travel he's used to.) Given the thinner travel space, they're flatter but less reliable. This is both a benefit and a curse, however, as this means sails are easy removable or alterable on the fly (in case of low-hanging trees, pirates changing flags, etc.)
