Before continuing up Fredrik heals himself and Eli'thir.
CLWs Fredrik: 5d8 + 5 ⇒ (8, 7, 1, 3, 7) + 5 = 31
CLWs Eli'thir: 6d8 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3, 5, 2, 7, 6) + 6 = 30

Maybe we should just walk... aarrgghhh! The cleric says as a huge wave of snow crashes down on them, yet, on the last moment he manages to jump out of the way of it's main mass.
Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Blaine Stoneheart |
Blaine tries to get out of the way of the worst of the snow.
reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
He gets out of the way of most of it but still takes Avalanche: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (2, 6, 3, 4) - 1 = 14Including Damage reduction.
Pissed off at being covered in snow he goes into a rage.
strength check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
This probably just made him angrier.
Blaine Stoneheart |
How often do we get to do the strength check? One per minute or one per round?

Fredrick, with so much damage to the party, would a channel or two be worth catching everyone?.
"Is everyone ok? . "
Elithir |
Reflex DC15: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Avalanche Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 2, 2) = 9
Eli can't make the DC25 Strength check to free himself. Once he's free, he has already drank Ant Haul this morning, so he's a good digger though. It seems like folks can guaranteed dig others out, though?
I believe this means he only needed 2 wand charges to be healed up?
Eli'thir, once freed from the snow, looks upon it with disdain.
"That was... most unfortunate."
Blaine Stoneheart |
Dig out Blaine last, he can probably get himself out.
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax will continue digging until the very last person is rescued from the snow and rocks.
"Unfortunate, Sir Elithir? Yes. This very mountain seeks to destroy or delay us for some reason of its own . "
GM Bold Strider |
To expedite:
Blaine's Strength Checks: 7d20 ⇒ (1, 4, 6, 14, 18, 4, 19) = 66 Blaine already rolled one himself.
Blaine will free himself in 8 rounds and it will take him 2 rounds to get to the party and suffer 14 lethal damage and 39 nonlethal damage. I don't think Damage Reduction applies to the non-lethal damage as it is environmental and not direct damage based.
Omrax can dig 600 lbs./min. with his shield and Quiven can dig out 260 lbs/min. with the pick.
It will take them approximately 2 minutes to dig one 5' square, which means Fredrik, Eli'thir, Blaine and Lem take 10d6 non-lethal during this time (five squares).
They free: Fredrik @ 1-Eli'thir @ 2: 1d2 ⇒ 2 Eli'thir with 35 nonlethal and 9 lethal!
Eli'thir can dig 300 lbs./min. with Ant Haul meaning that Eli'thir's high Intelligence will tell him to take the pick. Blaine can also clear 300 lbs./min. This reduces the time to one square per one minute now, which means Fredrik and Lem take 5d6 non-lethal before Fredrik is freed.
They free: Fredrik who is unconscious with 59 nonlethal and 24 lethal damage!
As Eli'thir, Omrax, Blaine and Quiven dig towards Lem, they can clear one square per .80 minute. Lem will take 12d6 nonlethal in this time.
They free: Lem who is unconscious with 66 nonlethal and 42 lethal!
Totals:
Eli-thir: Nonlethal Damage: 10d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 1, 4, 3, 3, 5, 1, 5) = 35
Fredrik: Nonlethal Damage: 16d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 6, 6, 5, 2, 6, 6, 2, 2, 2, 5, 6, 6, 6, 1) = 70
Lem: Nonlethal Damage: 27d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 6, 6, 2, 1, 4, 6, 3, 3, 2, 5, 4, 6, 4, 4, 4, 3, 2, 5, 5, 3, 3, 2) = 92 & Lethal Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 5, 6) = 16
Blaine: Nonlethal Damage: 8d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5, 4, 5, 5, 6, 2) = 39
Omrax the Bold |
Um, does that kill Lem? Can we reach him to heal while we dig?
Elithir |
Once he is free, and he has assisted in digging the others out of the avalanche, Eli quickly draws his wand and tends to his injuries.
Cure light wounds wand (5 uses): 5d8 + 5 ⇒ (6, 1, 8, 5, 3) + 5 = 28
Healing 28 takes care of 9 lethal and (28-9)*2=38 non-lethal
After, he looks to the others who may not have wands of their own before finally stepping up and awkwardly looking at Omrax.
"Thank you, Omrax. Were it not for your digging... many of us would have been lost."
He then narrows his eyes at the snow and then looks into the direction they must continue to travel.
"We should be careful in the future, to avoid this and other hazards"
Would a knowledge nature check help avoid or give us advance warning of this in the future?
Knowledge (nature, with chronicle): 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 10 + 2 = 17
GM Bold Strider |
I don't understand your healing. "Healing Nonlethal Damage: You heal nonlethal damage at the rate of 1 hit point per hour per character level. When a spell or ability cures hit point damage, it also removes an equal amount of nonlethal damage." You would heal 9 lethal and 28 nonlethal with 7 nonlethal still active on your character. The extra doesn't carry over.
A Knowledge check wouldn't help because it was caused by non-natural forces.
Merck |
Fredrick, with so much damage to the party, would a channel or two be worth catching everyone?.
Sure. Assuming someone heals Fredrik with his wand back to conciousness:
Wand of CLW: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (7, 4) + 2 = 13Back to tje world of the living Fredrik thanks his companions and channel positive energy when they are all gathered.
Channel heal: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 3, 4) = 16
Elithir |
Ack, I did the math part wrong - I single healed the lethal and doubled the non-lethal. Eli ends up with 7 non-lethal, which he was fine hopefully allowing to heal naturally during the digging and the next 1 hour. With the channel, this is moot. :)
Eli took 9 lethal, 35 non-lethal.
He used 5 wand charges for 28.
The first 9 of which heals 9 lethal and 9 non-lethal.
This left him with:
* 35 - 9 = 26 non-lethal damage remaining
* 28 - 9 = 19 healing still to apply
* 26 - 19 = 7 non-lethal damage remaining.
As he's level 7, he should regain these over the next hour.
With Fredrik's channel (for 16), this is moot though. :)
Eli will use Lem's wand to bring him back up to consciousness and then allow him to decide how he wishes to heal beyond that.
Blaine Stoneheart |
Another Channel might be the best way to heal the party back, Lem still needs it bad. Otherwise I'll just let my non lethal heal over the next three hours.
GM Bold Strider |
7th Level Kyra channels at 6d6, btw. She has a Phlactery of Positive Channeling.
Extra Channel Healing for Two Channels: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 3, 4) = 14
At last count for the healing:
Eli'thir, Omrax and Quiven are at full health.
Blaine @ 0 nonlethal damage.
Fredrik @ 0 nonlethal damage.
Lem @ 20 nonlethal damage.
Will post next step soon.
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax will lay healing hands on Lem to get him back up.
"Thank you for the healing Sir Fredrick. Let us see if this helps Sir Lem. . "
hands : 3d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 5) + (2) = 11
Quiven Glist |
Wow, I missed a lot of damage in those snow posts!
Do we really need to continue on? I don't want to be killed by the mountain. I wish we could fly instead! That would be fun. Quiven is not really enjoying his trip on the sled anymore.
Omrax the Bold |
"Sir Quiven, I apologize for my lack of skill with the sled. I mentioned I had only worked with horses previously. The Inheritor smiles upon us that those tests did not kill us as they would have any other group. We are destined to finish, and you will not want to miss out on this chance of a lifetime. " the paladin says with conviction.
Blaine Stoneheart |
Quiven, we should trade sleds, mine crashes less
Quiven Glist |
Naw, I'll be OK. I like being around paladins! On my last adventure I was with this gnome paladin, funny guy. I'm surprised he's not here since it has to do with dragons! He smites dragons, or so he says. I've never actually seen him do it. Quiven then turns to Omrax and says, Do all paladins smite dragons? Is that why you're here? I'll be happy to help if I can!
Omrax the Bold |
"I have only fought one "dragon" and it turned out not to be a real dragon, but a large lizard. I was not able to smite it, but I would like to have as it killed the trusted wolf companion of a good friend of mine. Iomedae has allowed my smiting largely to those of undeath an those escaping the Wound."
Quiven Glist |
Oh! Undead should suffer under your smiting, if I may say so myself. They are not very pleasant to deal with. Quiven will board the sled once the party is ready to move on. Come on! We have hero stuff to do!
Blaine Stoneheart |
I agree with Quiven, we should get moving.
Omrax the Bold |
"Agreed. Let us proceed." Omrax mushes the sled forward.
GM Bold Strider |
8. The Maw: Just past the scarp the path becomes impassable by sled. Here a tiny footpath winds up a steep slope covered with boulders (Climb DC 10). The path continues along a broad plateau and ends at the edge of a snow-filled gorge. The gorge is named The Maw for the jagged spires of rock that jut through the drifts. Atop the plateau rests the cairn.
Assumed you can Take 10 with a rope and grappling hook to get past the slope.
As you reach the plateau, you see the ancient cairn that marks a sacred place of congregation for the various clans of primitive beastmen that inhabit the surrounding peaks. The beastmen, or taer as they call themselves, believe the cairn radiates mystic energies that purify them and make them stronger. Throughout their lives, taer make pilgrimages to the cairn to pray and give offerings to the spirits. Their rituals often involve the use of psychotropic herbs and fungi to amplify their spiritual connection to the cairn’s natural powers.
The Maw is shrouded in fog when the PCs arrive. Clear visibility is about 60 feet, with an additional 30 feet counting as 50% concealment and anything after that as 100% concealment.
Near the top of the slope, a broad plateau wraps around the mountain. Near the middle of the plateau rises a squat, 30-foot-square stone rostrum, upon which stand four columns of dark gray stone. One of the columns is broken and lies half-buried in the nearby drifts of snow. In the center of the rostrum rests a five-foot-tall beehive-shaped nest built of ice and cairn stones seemingly frozen around a clutch of eight massive bluish-gray speckled eggs, each the size of a brandy cask.
A quick look around reveals dozens of footprints left by an oversized barefooted humanoid. There are possibly more than one, but less than favorable weather conditions make it too difficult to be certain.
How do approach? What do you do?
Omrax the Bold |
Is this all happening the same day, or has this taken a day or more since our last avalanche experience etc?
Omrax would move towards the front rank and motion to the footprints and points into the room while pausing for a moment, concentrating into the room for evil auras.
Elithir |
With the cairn in sight, Eli'thir leaps from the sled and lands softly in the snow, seemingly not even breaking the surface.
He gives the sled a less than favorable scowl, and begins to unstrap an assortment of vials from his person, mixing reagents and downing their contents.
Carefully depositing the empty vials into his backpack, he narrows his eyes and shields them from the light as he takes in the sight of the cairn in the distance.
"I suspect there is little benefit in us approaching with stealth. Either there will be a hostile presence we will encounter, or there will not. And I suspect any attempt of ours would likely be met with some preparation on their behalf."
The half-elf crunches ahead in the snow and takes up a position near Omrax.
"I am ready if the rest of you are to investigate this cairn."
Default approach. Boldly. On the ground. I have no in-character reason to proceed otherwise.

@GM Bold Strider: Eli used combat expertise that last round, bumping his AC to 29 (it was in the post and the spoiler, but not the "summary line").
Let me know what that bite damage was separated from that slam? If possible, due to ablative barrier, it would be good to get each attack separate too. Sorry about the inconvenience of an alchemist "tank"!
Eli'thir nods to himself as he seems to have attracted the attention of at least a few of the taer and takes a step forward to give his companions more room.
Attack at #3 then take a 5ft step afterwards. Eli continues to use combat expertise to set his AC to 29.

If Eli has taken more than 5 lethal damage, he'll also spontaneously heal 10 (5 lethal + 5 nonlethal) as a free action.
Unsure of the exact damage taken last round, but 5 of it becomes nonlethal due to ablative barrier. Once I know, I'll update it for my next status spoiler.
