Player Handout
Honorable Pathfinders,
Action and intent comprise the scales of karma. Join me in my final place of study, the Sanctuary of the Unbound Knot in New Oppara, to ascertain how past intent and future action may collude to raise the veil of ignorance. The lore and wisdom of two thousand years shall stand as your reward.
Venture-Captain Bakten Shengrah
A flurry of cherry blossoms paints the air above the Sanctuary of the Unbound Knot. A chill wind brings the last gasps of winter down from the Zi Ha Mountains, which legends claim to be the cradle of samsaran civilization. Now, in New Oppara, one of their living legends lies dying within his sanctuary. Soon, the sages say, Bakten Shengrah is to transcend to the Great Beyond, taking with him all the wisdom of twelve lifetimes and two millennia of lore beheld firsthand. For Pathfinders, an audience with the reclusive Bakten is a privilege indeed. As the gust of wind subsides, a gray rabbit quietly lopes down the sanctuary steps and across the courtyard.
No need to do anything yet. Just getting the opening out of the way. Please place you tokens on the monastery steps. Link at the top of the page.

Calomel's lips move silently as he reads the missive slowly, several times. Finally, he puts it down.
"Beautiful language, to be sure. Can't make heads or tails of it, though, except the part about the meeting."

GM Z..D.. |

When the rabbit reaches the PCs, its face elongates to a human girl’s.
“Walk-lookers! You! Now! Come! Bakten, friend, good news, dying soon. But woe! Worry and fear. A veiled life. Come!”
And with that the strange creature runs back into the monastery, looking back to make sure the others are following.

![]() |

Lurgh follows the creature quietly into the sanctuary. If the Venture-Captain had retreated to a life of contemplation and solitude, then making a loud entrance would be at the very least rude. He remembered that life once too, adopted by monks until his latent abilities sent him on a different journey of discovery.

![]() |

Shiori tried to recall what that creature is as she walks slowly into the monastery. She gives a silent glance to the psudodragon perched on her shoulder as she passes under the arched doorway.

Meditating on the steps outside the monastery, a short man sits with his legs folded and a bow across his legs. He wears no armour, only simple trousers and an open robe of desert tan. An intricate tattoo runs around his chest and arm and his eyes are an unearthly colour, betraying his celestial heritage.
At the rabbits approach, Amarok stands smoothly in one fluid motion and brushes down his trousers unconsciously. His bow, a fine creation of darkwood with a Tien Dragon carved into it is held ready but not drawn back.
"I am sure they are informing us that we are friends of the Venture Captain and that there is good news. It almost sounds like they are trying to convey that the Venture-Captain is perishing, how sad."
Steadily, Amarok follows the rabbit with a fluid grace.

The colorful adventurer dismounts from his even more colorful bird the size of a human. A vine wreath with several onyx blades circles the grippli's head, but he takes it out of the air before following the rabbit. "What a magnificent place," the magus comments and his . Still amazed by the all the architecture he has seen since leaving the huntsmaster Finyik and joining the Pathfinders at the Kaava quary his throat expands with an excited 'grok.'

The earthen floor of this tranquil courtyard is perfectly flat and clear of debris. A 20-foot-diameter circle occupies the center of the courtyard, filled with a sand painting depicting intricate, endless knotwork. To the southeast, four fir trees grow in an orderly row, and to the southwest, a small rock garden peeks out from behind a layer of tall bushes.

Probably easiest to go to someone else's page note their layout, copy and paste it into your own race field and edit it with your information. Kyra's is pretty straight forward. I normally try to keep it to one field. The race, gender and class/level fields all work the same way. Any thing you post in them shows up in your stats above. I try an note skills like Sense Motive, and Knowledges (things the GM might want to roll on the sly) in it and always have my perception post for just such an occasion as we are facing now. Kyra has such a short skill list I posted them all.

If you unmask the ninjas, they are easily discernible as Elves, and bear a family resemblance.
Once the PCs defeat the ninjas, Bakten descends to greet them, seemingly indifferent to the attack upon his life. At 250 years old, Bakten is an emaciated, hairless man with translucent blue-white skin. His legs have withered from years of meditation. Despite his frailty, Bakten is a forceful personality and a keen judge of character, and he sizes up the PCs almost instantly. Only his servant Twig seems capable of ruffling his feathers.
Before even speaking he hands you a time line to look over.
While looking over the time line, when you reach the blank space, he begins to explain.
“My veiled life; my only failing. For decades, I have communed with my own past lives, in preparation for my passage to the Great Beyond, for only a soul in perfect balance with karma may transcend. Yet this shadow incarnation is silent, and it vexes me. I wonder now, did these assassins know of some slight of which I, myself, am ignorant? Friends—indulge an old man’s curiosity. If you can travel to the loci of my lives before and after, then two relics there may point toward the mystery and lift the veil. I am too frail to travel, but I have an item here that may allow you to show me those relics from afar.”
The item that Bakten mentions is a candle of conveyance. If the PCs agree to participate in the ritual to activate the item, he spends an hour binding himself and the PCs to the candle. He then entrusts the candle to the PCs, but extracts a promise that it be returned to the sanctuary once the PCs complete their assignments. In addition, he insists that the PCs keep the timeline of his life with them, in case they forget important details. Before or after the ritual, he can answer questions about their quests.

I too have sought out details of my past, but those all sit within the span of a single lifetime. All I know is that a very young age I was abandoned in a coastal monastery in Minkai. I never knew why but I suspect it has to do with my heritage.
