Amarok checks the panels intently, shuddering at the thought of the undead creature. Turning to his companions Amarok indicates the second panel of the mural with interest.
"The shard of Jade in this panel, it resembles a Hare. It is strange to have so many automatons here is it not? I wonder how we avoid detection here?"
His bow drawn, the Monk keeps his eyes focused, looking for hidden watchers.

@shiori, they have light sensitivity and they become staggered when exposed to direct sunlight when outside of a body. also has undead traits.
Pipes snake across the floor, feeding a series of fluid-filled vats before connecting to six metallic sarcophagi—three on each side of the chamber. In the chamber’s center, a large glass vat rises past a second story balcony. To the south, anchored to the wall are three similar, ten-foot-tall vats. Two sets of stairs curl up the southern arc and provide access to the balcony that looms fifteen feet above.
The three containers to the east contain stitched-together tissue from a mixture of human and fiendish flesh. All of you recognize a familiar tattoo of a stylized cradle that identifies these misshapen corpses as people from the village of Dallo. Furthermore, you recognize that the fiendish flesh belonged to ceustodaemons.
A look through the middle casket reveals a book named Death's Gentle Caress. Inside the book are several scrolls.
Moving up the stairs. A balustrade rings a balcony where a vast, circular vat rises from the chamber below. Nestled against the northern curve of this chamber sit three workbenches crammed with glassware. Along the east and west walls, large spikes with upraised points are affixed to the floor, four to the east and four to the west. A single set of stairs at the chamber’s southern end rises to another chamber above.
A lantern on one workbench is lit, illuminating the area in dim light.
Sitting against at a desk, is a man you all recognize. Mata Ryuu, but you do not get a chance to talk as a bunch of heads on spikes start yammering in warning to you presence. You turns around and a furious sneer crosses his face.
"How dare you break into my tower"
You guys start at the bottom of the circle on the right and can start from either staircase.

As you go through the room and take the center stairs up to the next room. Twin braziers disperse the scent of jasmine oil throughout this bedchamber. A yeti pelt is draped over a futon near an arcane circle carved into the floor. North of the circle, a teak box overflows with jade figurines. A hollow in the eastern wall is bordered with a marble carving of wolves stalking a hare amid grave markers. Words are carved in a spiraling script around the hollow.
The teak box contains 18 jade figurines depicting the following animals: eagle, fox, butterfly, horse, raven, ox, dog, crow, jackal, rat, snake, whippoorwill, crane, songbird, carp, monkey, tiger, and ram.
are missing: the wolf of Fumeiyoshi and the hare of Tsukiyo.

Lurgh |
Fumeiyoshi killed his brother, Tsukiyo. Here the wolves stalk the hare... It must be some sort of representation of what the script suggests. Downstairs we saw a tapestry...
"Fumeiyoshi is shown sundering a piece of the other's jade armor. Then, the Lord of Envy gloats over his fallen enemy with the shard of jade held high, while in the final panel, Fumeiyoshi thrusts the shard into an arcane circle where it crumbles to dust, activating a nearby portal in a graveyard."
We could try bringing the hare downstairs and see how it compares to what was missing from the carving we saw when we first entered. If nothing comes of that, I wonder if smashing the hare in the portal would cause something to activate.
GM Z..D.. |
Sharaheen walks into the room behind the pathfinders and studies the arcane circle on the ground.
"Ah, a ritual circle this must lead to a portal"

I am willing to attempt it, but agree with Lurgh. Lets compare it to the carving downstairs for clues." After returning, "Does anyone know any other stories of the brothers? Or perhaps some of their follower here?
Edit: I just re-read & don't see any connection. However there was a cage with straw in it. Can I make a check to identify what was being kept in there? Nature or Survival maybe? or maybe it was the Perception none of us succeeded at?
Amarok Sandstrider |
Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27
Amarok listens to their ally regarding the ritual required but such specialisation is beyond the Monk and he keeps quiet, instead keeping his eyes focused on the Portal and the carvings to see if he has missed anything. Spotting something off, Amarok goes still and raises his hand for quiet, his eyes searching the portal and he gets a little closer until he can be sure.
"There is a trap built into the portal here, it seems set to activate if someone were to try and use it. Are any of you capable of removing it before we proceed?"
Shiori |
Shiori begins to walk back towards the stairs while thinking out loud.
Good idea. Hmm, well the last door said stuff about putting coins in the mouth and we did that and the door opened fine. if the hare represents Tsukyio as Lurgh said and the tien script talks about killing his brother to pass safely, maybe it will help with the trap someone. OH! im so stupid.
She trots back and casts detect magic to see if she can suss out auras on the trap, portal and hare statue.
GM Z..D.. |
@Shiori, you detect the arcane circle, but nothing from the trap or hare statue. The portal is not active yet.
@Weim, all you saw in the cage was bags of rice.
Shahareen looks towards Shiori, "Well it would not hurt to try anything. So if you think you should smash the hare, then proceed."
So who is activating the portal and are you all smashing the hare while doing the ritual.
Shiori |
I'll do the ritual and I guess ill tap at the hare with my cold iron jutte. I'm not sure Shiori is strong enough to break it in one hit.
Wiem Weems Finyik |
"I can call a magical creature to try and spring the trap. It is seems a waste of resources, but losing Shiori to a trap seems even worse."
Amarok Sandstrider |
Amarok shakes his head to WIem's suggestion clearly uncomfortable at such wanton waste of life, even if it is one crafted by magic.
"The trap will spring when the Ritual utilizes the portal, which I fear an Animal cannot do. Shiori if you are willing to activate the Portal I can try and break the Hare with an Adamantine arrow.
I suggest not all of us stay in this room however, as to avoid the traps repercussions as we cannot disable it."
Attack roll when needed: 1d20 + 11 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 11 + 1 = 31 for Adamantine damage: 1d8 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 1 = 14
Shiori |
Here goes nothing
Shiori puts her tail in and her tail out then shakes it all about or whatever it is the ritual entails.
GM Z..D.. |
Sharaheen walks Shiori through the ritual and smashes the hare with relative ease. The portal activates and Shiori is sucked immediately, the trap does not activate.
Without hesitation Sharaheen follows almost immediately.
Assuming everyone goes through the portal, I am moving on
A veneer of regality struggles to mask the decaying features of this once-opulent court. A fraying carpet leads from the chamber’s arched entrance to a raised marble dais featuring two worn leather chairs. Flanking the dais, a pair of marble statues each depict an imperious samsaran woman. Porcelain jars and ornate boxes adorn alcoves in the north and south walls. In the eastern portion of the room, hundreds of small mirrors are carefully arrayed in a circle on the wall. Together, the mirrors reveal a raging snowstorm.
Once the PCs enter the portal, they find themselves standing on the eastern end of a hall, within 10 feet of a marble archway identical to the one they entered.
This extradimensional lair is an enclosed, dimly lit stone hall with 30-foot ceilings. The room’s furnishings are all finely crafted, but over the preceding 2 centuries, they have degraded badly
What appears to be a beautiful samsaran woman in a flowing silk robe stands before the northern chair, attended by monks. Jujanil welcomes the PCs warmly, then rises into the air and sheds her robe, revealing that her body is but a floating head trailing a mass of slick viscera—she is a penanggalen. Jujanil laughs and says, “So kind of you to bring me a new wardrobe.”
And with that...
