GM Barty's Lost Mine of Phandelver (Inactive)

Game Master GM Barty

Dipping my toes into the water to check for players that may be interested in "Lost Mine of Phandelver", the D&D 5E Starter Set campaign. This is a great campaign to hop into D&D 5E if you've wanted to try it, and it's a great story to experience if you're a 5E veteran.

I'm a very story-driven GM (practically addicted to the narrative value PbP offers), so my obvious preference would be players who enjoy a healthy dose of role playing/character development mixed in with their combat, and are willing to write a "what", "how", and "why" in most posts. Consistency (at least once a day) would be expected, and those who have not played this campaign before would be preferred.

If you're interested in finishing this campaign, reply for now with your interest and a tentative character idea.

If there's enough interest, I'll follow up with more details.

Count me interested. I have notions for a somewhat reckless tiefling who is far too fond of fire. Warlock or sorcerer perhaps. I haven't played the campaign before, only the start of Tyranny of Dragons.

Hi! I’m extremely interested, the type of game you propose sounds like my type of game. I’m looking for a daily game and would love to get involved.

I’d like to play a ranged fighter or a ranger perhaps.

I'm interested- have GMed a couple 5e sessions, but eager to taste a little more of it.

I'd be thinking cleric, probably. Any adventure-specific background to look at for char creation?

I'm thinking a Fire Genasi caster, obsessed with flame and thrill seeking.

Would you be open to allowing the Pyromancer sorcererous origin from Plane Shift: Kaladesh? It's just focused on fire magic without draconic or infernal components.

I would be interested as well, I have played Pathfinder in real life for years, but I have also wanted to try 5th edition for a while

I was thinking of a half-orc monk that used to be an enforcer.

Sounds like we have four interested so far! Leaving recruitment open for a bit to see if we can get a fifth, but if not we can press on with four.

Decimus, LazyFisherman, Murph and Virat, those all sound like excellent characters, feel free to create those and add them to the Discussion tab. We'll work together to get some adventure-specific bonds and backstories for each character.

For stat creation, Standard Array, Point Buy and Rolling are all acceptable, however, because rolling can result in some incredible stats, no re-rolling will be allowed if you choose that method.

If you're rolling for stats, roll the 4d6 six times here or Discussion.

This is now a campaign and I've added some house rules and information to the Campaign Info.

Good stuff! Decimus rolling for Idrix Ashir.

4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 5, 4) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 6, 5) = 16 15
4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 4, 6) = 16 14
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 4, 1) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4, 2) = 8 8
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5, 5) = 19 16

Awesome!! Thanks Barty :)

I’ll also roll:

4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 3, 5) = 16 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 4) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 2) = 11 9
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 4, 1) = 11 10
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 6) = 17 15
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 2, 4) = 13 11

@GM Barty

Since there aren't any Genasi-specific racial feats, would you be willing to allow house ruled ones or repurposed racial feats from other races? Just thinking about future feat choices.

Cool

My roll:
4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 1) = 9
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 1, 1) = 8
4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 4) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 4, 1) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 1) = 9
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 5, 4) = 16

I'll get started on building my monk.

Rollsies for a Mountain Dwarf Cleric of Torm (War Domain)

4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 5, 2) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 6, 3) = 19
4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 4, 3) = 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5, 2) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 2) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 6, 1) = 12

13, 16, 11, 12, 13, 11

(LazyFisherman ->) This is Ren. I’ve typed up a backstory but I’m open to feedback and change where necessary.

The idea is that he’s a scrawny, weak, wood-elf. He’s skittish around people due to his past, and doesn’t have the highest self esteem. Shy and timid. It will be fun to see if he can come out of his shell and prove his tribe wrong.

Recruiting still open for a fifth player!

Discussion thread is connected now. Once you have your characters set, drop them in there and we'll work out a bond or tie-in specific to this campaign.

Liberty's Edge

It's hard not to look twice when a campaign uses rolling for scores. The surprise and challenge that come from unpredictable generation are often worth it. If you're still open for a fifth, let me roll some bones and see if inspiration strikes.

4d6 drop the lowest GOOOOOOOOO!
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 3, 1) = 8 7
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4, 3) = 9 8
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 2, 2) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 4) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 3) = 13 12
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 1, 1) = 10 9

Hmm. three +1's, two -1's and a -2? Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

...

...

I'll be right back. Link to a mythweavers sheet okay with you?

Lol, this is why I love rolling for stats.

Any sheet that can be linked to/bookmarked works for me. Welcome aboard!

Aaaand here we go! Gelin Brooklane, half-elven bard with a slight frame and a habit of drinking more than he should, ready to get tossed into the grinder---errr, ready for adventure!

Thanks decimus, those guides are super handy.

Table is full at this moment. We have:

Idrix Ashir - Fire Genasi Sorcerer
Ren'Kel - Elf Ranger? (actually not positive what the class is)
Gelin Brooklane - Half-Elf Bard
Rory Loudheim - Dwarf Cleric
Grognard Fuglsang - Half-Orc Monk

That's an interesting party if I've ever seen one. Once Gelin, Idrix and Grognard confirm their backstories, we will get underway!

Whoops, yup I’m going ranger. I’m unsure though.. there’s a revised one and a standard one in the phb, which should I take?

Take the standard ranger, looks like the revised one is still in playtesting.

@GM Barty: I'm getting Idrix's background together. An extremely ambitious bounty hunter, sees himself as the bane of criminals. Not for altruism, but because he wants people to have as high an opinion of him as he has of himself. Also, I think you missed this query:

Idrix Ashir wrote:

@LazyFisherman: You're welcome! I'm happy to spread handy knowledge.

Perfect, I’ll finish his sheet tonight.

@Idrix Homebrew can be a slippery slope but I'm happy to accept a racial feat that makes sense. We can cross that bridge when you're ready to choose a feat, if you go that route.

All characters are confirmed and only Gelin's campaign tie-in has yet to be accepted.

Humans? We don't need no steenkin humans!

(...wait, who let those elves in here?)

Just a post to see if my stats show the way Murph has it for his cleric..

Edit: Nope. What's the secret?

I don't think those appear in recruitment threads. Look at your posts in the discussion threads.

Ah sweet! Cheers :)

Recruiting is open for a level 1 character, to replace our missing ranger!

This campaign is advanced daily, typically around 12pm, 5pm, and 11pm EST, but I give a full 24 hours before botting a character, and will not advance unless all players have had a chance to weigh in.

Standard Array, Point Buy, and Rolling are all accepted, but rolling must be done in this thread and there are no re-rolls.

Pathfinder Maps Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I'm interested but can't work a character out currently, about to run a session. Idrix pointed this out to me.

Hmm, I wonder if I could do something impulsive and both apply for this game and roll my stats in order...

STR: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 1) = 16 15
DEX: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 5, 2) = 14 13
CON: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 5, 2) = 12 11
INT: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 3, 5) = 17 14
WIS: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 3) = 19 16
CHA: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 5, 4) = 17 14

Well, then. Not limited too much with that array, to be sure. I'm not a huge fan of the ranger even though this is a decent setup for one. It seems like the party's pretty set up on melee, so I might lean into something with a bit more ranged + utility.

Oh, sorry for the confusion, you're welcome to create a character of any race/class from an official publication.

Nice rolls, once you've created your character and backstory, we can slot you into the campaign!

All right, I think Gamze is fully built, here. Her profile crashed on me while I was writing up the background so the new one is just her bullet points for now - I can expand on it a bit later. Let me know if I should make any changes or if I missed anything. I ended up swapping Wisdom and Dex because I feel like the group could use a bit of a rogueish character, thus betraying my "roll in order" idea.

(Spoiler- I intend to go into Great Old One Warlock for a few levels before continuing in rogue.)

Looks great, and multiclassing is totally fine. I'll introduce Gamze soon...the group has recently been a little overwhelmed by a goblin cave during a rescue attempt, so that might play into Gamze's joining the group, but the rest of the roleplaying is in your hands!

Gamze is in! Welcome aboard.

Recruiting is open for a 2nd level character in this 5E Starter Set campaign!

Race/Class can be any combination from SRD (preferably from the Player's Handbook/Basic Rules), and multi-classing is accepted.

Any of the three methods for stat generation are valid - Standard Array, 27 Point Buy or "Roll 4d6 Drop Lowest". If rolling is chosen, the rolls must be made in this thread and no re-rolling is allowed.

I avoid averaging in my campaigns, so the HP will be rolled per level regardless of stat generation method chosen.

This is a fun group of good role players and consistent posters, looking for that elusive fourth.

Interested, can get a fighter together fairly quick. Roll for 1st level hp as well?

Nope, base HP for 1st level - HP will be 10 + CON modifier for a fighter.

2nd level HP is then rolled, 1d10 + CON modifier.

Thanks for your interest!

Alrighty, thats what I'm used to, just confirming.

Stats:

4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5, 5) = 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 2, 4) = 9
4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 1, 4) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 4) = 18
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 1, 3) = 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 1, 2) = 14

14.8.12.16.13.13

2nd hp: 1d10 ⇒ 9

All set with this alias, stats/scant story details in profile.

Great rolls! Move on over to the Discussion tab to get caught up/figure out how to tie Zove in.
