Hi everyone,
Change of setting. The High School you're getting into is Zion High. You are all teenagers with strange mysterious powers. It's up to you how you get them. The task of the first season is getting into Zion High (it's a high school like Sky High and the High School in "My Hero Academia"). The premise is that you will have to face supervillains while in high school. And yes, I'm taking inspiration from both DC and Marvel Comics for them, as well as MHA. So you may face Supervillains like Doctor Doom, Electro, Magneto, the Calculator, the Joker, and others. Since someone wanted something like the Guyver, I'll probably also create villians based on the Guyver for you to take out. You may even face an alien invasion!
What You'll Need
* One copy of Mutants and Masterminds Deluxe Heroes' Handbook (3e). I linked the place where you can get the PDF. It's Drivethru, Paizo. Use just the the Core Rulebook to develop your Hero. If you have power ideas beyond the core rulebook, then we can talk about it.
Designing your Hero
Origins. from what I saw of the interest check, there is an outpouring of human imagination when it comes to heroes! Come up with a origin for your hero and how he got his "quirk." I'll leave it up to you. Your quirk can be one power, or a number of powers related on one theme.
Age. You are all High School first years (Sophomores). But first, you need to test into Zion High School, so you will face fake villains as your test.
Costume. In Zion High, your Physical Education teacher may have you change into your costume for outdoor activities. Be creative in designing your costume. I also need you to design a costume and link a picture of it, so everyone can see it. If you lack drawing skills, you can also describe it or buy one of Storn Cook's illustrations from Drivethru. Also, you may have to come up with a Superhero name for your character. And yes, you all know each other, so if you need a secret identity, we can talk about that as well. Although I don't care if your costume is the sky.
Complications Remember, you need a motivation for adventuring, and another complication.
Power Level. We are using Power Level 10 to start. You are free to use the Archetypes on pages 34 through 49 of the M&M 3rd Core Rulebook if you need to figure out where to start.
Powers or Quirks. I know M&M 3e had booklets upon booklets describing certain powers. However, to make sure we are on the same page, I'd like you to stick to the Core Rulebook. IF you can't, again we can talk about it. I may have to try and get my M&M pdf collection from one of my thumb drives.
Advantages. Advantages in M&M 3rd are like feats in Pathfinder or D&D 3e. Try to pick Advantages that fit your concept.
GM Approval. I need to approve your hero for play. So feel free to make up more than one if your first concept doesn't fly.
Okay, that's it. Any questions?

You said that you're fairly inexperienced with M&M so I thought that I'd mention that PL 8 is the usual recommended starting level for teen super heros (Gives them room to grow and keeps them less powerful than the adults). PL 10 gives us a LOT of points to play with :-).
But PL 10 is fine :-).
Sky High has made me think of Layla.
Would - Plant Boy be a reasonably quirk?
He'd be able to control existing plants, create things from wood (including armour around himself), that sort of thing?

Yep. I have the Power Profile: Plant Powers (it's on my thumb drive). So yes.

His Immunity (suffocation) power is in effect part of the Precise extra of his Insubstantial power (as his lungs reactively become insubstantial as needed).
Do not have a character name yet, for the following sample will use Parker as my character's name and Flash as the bully's name.
Flash grabs Parker by the throat with his left hand and pins against the concrete wall of the hallway with his left forearm. "Parker, I am going to shut that smart mouth of yours."
"Flash, you don't want bad karma. Let me go."
"Tell the dentist's receptionist Flash says hi." Flash moves his right arm back as he forms a fist as he gets ready to deliver a teeth-shattering punch.
As his hand reaches Parker's mouth, instead of the sound of teeth shattering, the gathered crowd hear Flash yelp out in pain as his fist goes through Parker's head and connects with the the solid wall, busting his knuckles. "What the? You broke my hand!"
"I never touched you. Everyone saw I never touched you, Flash."
A teacher breaks up the fight and escorts Flash to the nurse's office.
He can enter a burning building to rescue a trapped child, by phasing, then using his precise insubstantial power to pick up the child, and if needed, affecting the child with his insubstantial and/or suffocation immunity powers to get the child safely out of the burning building.
I might also add in Duplication as part of his power set so that he would not have to decide which child to save when there are x children trapped in a burning building.
Elton, is the above power set viable for the game?

Cool. Thank you.
Would the following idea of how his powers first manifested be okay, or would you rather I come up with a different backstory?
For time being will continue to use Parker as his name until I decide on his name.
Parker was a good kid who did not get into trouble. That changed the summer after he finished grade 8, when his parents divorced and his little sister stayed with his mom in the small town he grew up in, while he moved with his father to the city.
Parker and his father moved from their house in the small town to an apartment in the city.
Parker started high school and started hanging with some troublemakers. He got into the minor bad habits (smoking, petty crime) and then not so minor (stealing cars for joy rides). He wound up in the back of a cruiser as a result. When the cops grabbed him from the back seat of the cruiser to escort him to the station, the handcuffs were on the back seat instead of still around Parker's wrists. Parker never understood how, except that he was scared about the possibility of being locked up. From the cops' perspectives they thought he was some expert lergerdermain artist trying to embarass them. The city cops were different than the local small town cops that would sometimes play hoops with him and the other kids of the town.
Parker fell asleep with a lit cigarette in his mouth...resulting in his apartment going up in flames. The firefighters managed to get the fire under control before it spread to the any of the adjacent apartments, but not in time to prevent Parker's father from getting severe burning to the left side of his face and body.
Although Parker's bedroom was the source of the inferno, he suffered no burns or physical damage from the fire. Parker developed a strong sense of guilt for his father being nearly burned alive and the physical and psychological changes that happened to his father because of the fire.
During the fire...
One of the firefighter busts down the door to Parker's bedroom, and sees two teenagers on the bed and one on the floor, and goes to pick up the one on the floor, but his hands go through the boy. He tries to pick up one of the teenagers on the bed, with the same result. As the firefighter, confused attempts to try grabbing the remaining boy, he hears his co-worker yell out, "Johnson, I need your help, I got a burner!" Johnson, hesistant to leave the kids, makes his way to help his partner, who together reach Parker's father and put out the flames covering half his body, then get him out of the apartment.
Johnson, "There are kids in there, but I couldn't grab them."
Before Johnson's partner can respond, Parker walks out of the apartment, "Dad!".
"Where are your brothers, kid?" Johnson asks Parker.
"I don't have any brothers, just a kid sister back home."
"You get them out, I'll get the other two," Johnson tells his partner and heads back into the apartment to Parker's room and discovers no sign of the other two teenagers.
"Other two? It's just me and my dad."
Post fire...
Parker's father is in the intensive care burn victim wing of the hospital. It was not just half his face and body that got damaged in the fire, but also suffered extreme burn damage to the left side of his brain, the logical and rational-thinking side....
Edited some during the past twenty-one minutes.

Cool. Thank you.
Would the following idea of how his powers first manifested be okay, or would you rather I come up with a different backstory?
** spoiler omitted **...
I think that might work, but you have to explain how he turned from petty crime and car stealing to a life of heroics.

Yeah, it's a cultural difference, is all.
The character concept is that she's a local beauty queen from Calaveras County, California. However, she just recently received death-related powers as a family tradition. This doesn't mean she's some killer-monster, though. Death is just a part of life, after all, and people are always looking for ways to speak with ancestors and the like.
The connection is through the Aztec goddess Mictecacihuatl, who guards the bones of the dead and presides over festivals for the dead (see Dia de los Muertos for the most commonly known one).
I'm going to need some assistance with character design, I feel, since I'm new to M&M. Powers I'm considering are communing with spirits, healing, affliction/weakening through talking directly to her target's bones (paralyzation, maybe pain but I don't want to be a bad guy). Perhaps some physical defense from spirits coming to her aid, or a general immunity to death, in some way.
If you prefer I can run with a different concept, but this came to me, and I kind of like it.

Okay. You will need to get Power Profiles. It's a product that contains all the possible Powers for Mutants and Masterminds. There is two sections on Life and Death powers (respectively) that you can peruse. Something that will be good for you to get, Paul, since it talks about plant powers as well.
That's the best help in building your character I can give you right now. The concept works, I like it.

Hero Forge mini of Parker in his civvies
Hero Forge mini of Parker in his hero costume
His full name is Parker Milton Song.
Still pondering on hero moniker. "Fyre" and/or "Ghost" might be part of it.
Parker's father is of Korean/Japanesse heritage. Parker's mother is of Greek/Hawaiian heritage. Parker's Greek grandmother thinks the Greek god Hephaestus protected Parker from being harmed during the fire that nearly killed his father.
I have an idea brewing on what caused him to pursue a life of heroicss..thought seed being one (or more) of his troublemaking peers take things a little too far by trying to commit arson. Up to that point, no one was getting physically hurt...Parker's crew decided they did not want to risk a snitch telling the cops they were responsible for the fire, and locked Parker in the building (possibly a warehouse) which the crew thought the fire would take care of their new 'Parker' problem. Unlike the fire that irrevocably changed his father, Parker was conscious from the start while he was trapped in the warehouse, discovering his capabilities.
Thereafter Parker thinks there might be some truth to what his grandmother believes a Greek god protected him from the apartment fire.
"Greekfyre" might be his hero moniker....

Hey everyone, I don't have time to join this campaign, but I have a lot of experience playing, running, and building characters for Mutants and Masterminds. I am always an evangelist for the system, so if anyone needs help with a build, feel free to PM me.
EltonJ, in a similar way but not quite the same as the Hero System, Mutants and Masterminds is an effects based system. So to build powers you choose your effects and spend points to build that effect, then you apply descriptors to explain how or why the power works. The Powers in the core book and in Power Profiles are just examples of how powers can work. There are lots of builds on Echoes of the Multiverse that are good examples. Also the DC Adventures Heroes and Villains books can be useful for seeing how characters you know could be built.

When Timothy was born, his parents were ecstatic. The first born son to John and Sara Blank. Both of the Blanks were Catholics. When toys started spinning in the baby's room, The Blanks had a Priest come to the home and Bless it.
The protection did not alleviate the supranatural activities. As time passed, The Black started to believe that Timmy was possessed. Through requests and church investigations, A proper exorcism was scheduled. Father Viceroy stopped mid-ceremony, as he surmised that Timothy was a mutant.
The church convinced the Blanks that Timothy would be safer under the church's supervision. Under a Jesuit secret society, The Church trained Timothy to be a weapon for the Church. The training and mind washing turned Tim into a symbol of Church's corruption.
Shortly before Tim's sixteenths birthday, A new pope was voted in. Being a good and decent man, He eventually learned of 'Righteous Wrath'. He requested to meet him. The Pope spoke to the young man. He could see what brokenness they brought to the child. The old man's heart broke for the boy.
In an effort to embarrass the perpetrators of the evils committed on Tim, The Pope made the whole event world wide news. Tim's parents, with knowledge of Tim's suffering, commit lawfare against the Church to regain caretaker-ship that they signed away years ago. The news of Telekinesis Timmy never seems to end.
Age: 16
Complications:
Zealotry: Bred since a toddler to be a representation of God's justice. He had been manipulated into being a tool for the wicked in the Church. A newly elected Pope, upon learning about 'Righteous Wrath', Liberated the young man. The Holy Father, hoping to free his mind of control, sends Wrath to Zion High School.
Fame: the public admission of the church, and subsequent movement to the Zion school, made him famous. But his parents, who now know what was done to their son, want custody. The lawfare and public interest based on his real name: Timothy Blank. Or the new pseudonym that the newspapers propagate: Telekinesis Timmy

I love the Mutants and Masterminds system and this game sounds interesting so I'll throw my hat in the ring as well. I have a couple loose concepts in mind so hopefully at least one of these is suitable and I can develop it further.
A character who is the child of a famous hero. While their parent's quirk granted them had many amazing abilities they only inherited one. My original idea was for their parent to basically have superman's powers, strenght, flight, heatvision, etc but the character only inherits the heatvision making them similar in powers to someone like cyclops but I might change it in favour of something more unique. Despite this they train tirelessly with the power they do have to live up to their family's legacy. It would also be particularly interesting if this setting has professional heroes like in MHA since their parent would likely be very successful then. They feel like they've had to struggle and work hard because they didn't ineherit their parent's full quirk but on the other they'll probably have a much easier time becoming a pro hero due to their parent's wealth and connections.
A character that get's their abilities from a curse, possibly one passed down through their family but wants to turn thier curse into something good by using their powers to become a hero. There's lot of options for what the powers could be here but one idea I had was for them to have abilities themed around a some predatory animal like but they also have a sort of bloodlust due to their animal instinct, although I'm afraid that might be a bit dark for a hero high style game.
A character that came from humble beginings but a quirk that isn't particularly flashy or suited to being a hero. Despite that they learned to work with what they had and managed to earn themself a spot in Zion High. Its hard to think of a power for this that will still be fun to play but some initial ideas are the power to shrink or something like Sero from MHA's tape power.

All of these ideas can make for interesting heroes. The second one reminded me of the Astonishing Werewolf from image comics.

Guys, an update.
I just purchased Hero High from Drivethru today, and I've been reading it. I don't want you to change your characters, though. If I wanted you to start at PL 8, I would have said so.
I also purchased the Gadget Guides, so in case you want to play a hero piloting a mecha (technically Iron Man uses a mecha) or a suit like Iron Man's, then I suggest you get a copy.
Well, anything else?

I have an idea for the character (background wise)
Her quirk (yet to be decided) was literally killing her.slowly but surely her body was shutting down due to mentioned quirk.
Her parants are extremely wealthy with near limitless resources. They tried everything to try and stop the decay of her body. But when they finally had to throw in the towel, it came to them that a new alien technology was uncovered. And so they used their connection and resources to get said technology. But it didn't just stop her body from dying. It fused with her. And in a way, fed off of her quirk to power it even more
I have a few idea of what the quirk could possibly be:
Nuclear energy
Some form of electrical current
alien bio-mas
Other ideas welcome

but yeah, i guess if its ever forcibly removed, we can go with a weakness. cause not only will it kill her, if it didnt, her quirk would too. but it may kill everyone in the room/building in the process

Alrighty here's what I've got so far for Ava Hawke aka Talon. I'm pretty much done except for the rest of her backstory and her appearance.
Name: Ava Hawke
Alias: Talon
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Height: 5’5”
Power/Quirk: Bird of Prey
Origin: Inherited altered DNA
Background:
Ava Hawke is the daughter of the villains Night Hawk and Shadow Talon. They were originally the products of an US military programme to create superpowered soldiers by altering humans with animal DNA. They were thought to be a success at first but then their animal instincts began taking over, causing them to kill uncontrollably. When the military tried to have them killed they escaped and turned to a life of crime. When Ava was five her parents were arrested and since then she's grown up in foster care.
Growing up she became something of an outcast amongst her peers once they started to find out that her parents were supervillains. Some bullied her for it while others were scared of her. She would move around a lot due to being in the foster system but eventually people would always find out. She didn't have many friends until she was nine and discovered that she could talk to birds. As she grew older more powers similar to those of her parents began to emerge.
WIP (mainly need to cover her reaction to her Hunter's instincts complication and what makes her decide to become a hero)
Some ideas/ potential plot points:
The hero that put her parents in prison is now a teacher at Zion high.
Complications:
Motivation: Ava wants to prove that she is nothing like her parents and can be a hero. She has a fondness for the natural world, especially birds and will oppose anyone that threatens nature.
Hunter’s Instincts: Ava’s more animalistic instincts are prone to taking over, particularly when she is angry. They cause her to lash out blinding without care for who she hurts.
Reputation (Villain Parents): There are some that are quick to judge Ava because of who her parents are.

@Silver I have an idea we can work on for a connection if we are both chosen for this
Cool, I'm curious!
Also, where is Zion High?
ETA: Also also, I've still got 27 points to spend, and I don't know what's appropriate power levels for things, so I might need to improve a power or skills or defenses (I haven't been able to figure out how to buy up defenses).
She's a (local) beauty queen, so she should be likable, despite the death theme.
And regarding death, I know dying is not a typical concern for a high school supers genre, but I figure more of "our relationship to the dead and ancestry" still makes sense. Given that, do the powers work, or are they against genre?

So you were pulled towards her, as she was literally ebbing away. And you could see her life force deminishing. But then when she was fused with the bio-tech. Something happened. You see her teetering at death's door but that it. No movement. Not towards or away. She is constantly on the verge of death. Perhaps you can also see the bio Armor anchoring her to life. Like the roots of a tree.
Just a thought. Happy to help expand on this

Can it be a floating campus like Sky High?
