The half-orc gasps, as if he's just surfaced from a long swim. Breathing heavily, he immediately sits up and wheels around, looking for the ghoul.

"Wha-where's the....is Haltani ok???" He looks frantically around the room for their guide. He gingerly touches the angry-looking newly-closed laceration that traverses his jaw line, up to the corner of his mouth.

The half-orc sits, rubbing at his jaw, as the rest of the party completes their survey of the room.

you were at full HP 13: with it's first attack it clawed you for 5hp, then 1hp cold dmg. from it's aura. 6+9(it's last claw attack)=15 total dmg..13hp-15hp= (-2) -2 +2(rebuke death)=0 ...0+4(channel)=4 ...4+4(Cure lt.)=8hp...only thing I got wrong was I forgot about the orc ferocity again oops.. glad Faenethor used a magic missile ..although now that I think about it: did Faenethor say he took a 5ft step back? Oh well my hand is off the chess piece..if I missed an AoO on Faenethor no big deal you guys were going to win this fight anyhow; it only had 1hp when Faenethor blew a hole in it.

male Snows of Summer

Torvald rummages through the former Dwarf for any clues as to who he might have been. He hands the gladdringgoch to Faenethor who inspects it carefully. Not knowing anything about nobility or linguistics Faenethor hands the gladdringgoch to Jawhar, knowing Jawhar is a member of the Grandlodge and they are interested in such things. Torvald continues his search and finds a backpack frozen to the Dwarf's outer garments. After carefully opening the backpack, the only thing of interest Torvald finds is, an old iced over pocket book entitled Vargrim's journal. Almost all the pages are frozen together and the ink long smeared. However, a dry writing quill is placed in the later half of the book, almost perfectly preserving one frost covered page. Handout is in Google shared drive

It's written in Dwarven, so all those who read Dwarven lean over the table, as Torvald gently sets the book down and reads. In the mean time, Uliyara and another of the party explore the other two doors that lead out of this room. Both rooms seem to be bedrooms of a larger apartment. On the bed in one of the rooms is a fine Dwarven war axe.
A party member that speaks Dwarven should translate the journal entry for those who don't

After reading the journal and checking the apartment thoroughly for anymore hidden clues, Uliyara says, It grows late. If we don't return to Dalun soon we will be caught in the middle of the Irrisen flats during nightfall! We mustn't let that happen. Our chances of survival would be slim after dark.

You're party begins to look at each other. Although you didn't find the Sky Key you have found an important clue to where it might be. The hour is growing late, and you've already experienced the dangers of the Irrisen wilderness during the day.

Uliyara looks surprised at Torvald's request. I'm sorry Torvald I don't possess such magics. Even if I did, it would be best that I didn't reveal to my mother that, I was working with Pathfinders. She knows of my dalliance of masquerading as Haltani. She knows that I led you to Dalun. But, I'm afraid she is unaware that, I am with you now. She would be suspicious if she found out. Uliyara pauses a moment to catch her breath. My mother knows I am stilyagi however, consorting with Pathfinders may be more than her patience could bear! When we get back to Dalun, I ask that you say nothing of this expedition to my mother. Suspicions run deep in Irrissen, I'm surprised she hasn't sent someone looking for me yet. My aunt Urgalaena, has been trying to abduct me and hold me as leverage for weeks now. Rigory is proof she hasn't given up. My mother wants me safe at the palace. But, what good can I do for Dalun or Irrisen there!? We are an isolated nation that needs to open up our relations with other cultures or...we..we...we will be no more. Uliyara's expression is crestfallen as she whispers the last part.

Uliyara, looks up eyes moist and continues, I think we should go while we can today. If we stay the night nothing guarantees our safety. It will still reach well below freezing in these ancient chambers as.. Uliyara points to the still form of Vargrim this poor soul can attest to. Besides, If Rigory finds his pack and brings them back here.... she shivers and lets the rest of the sentence go unsaid.

Party members can make a DC 15 knowledge local check to know what stilyagi means

Knowledge local:
stilyagi, a
Jadwiga who yearns to learn about and experience cultures outside insular Irrisen, often ostracized or outright persecuted in Irrisen. In some cities of Irrisen it's illegal to even be part of a stilyagi group.

Craggark considers Haltani's words, still finding it difficult to accept her duality.

Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Stilyagi, eh? It would be good to have her in the Pathfinder Society...if she would only come clean about her duplicity...

After the entire passage has been completely translated for those who don't speak Dwarven, the half-orc ponders a name:

Hao Gin...Hao Gin?...Hao Gin....where do I know that name??"

Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16 (perhaps hearing the name spoken in recent times)

"Why do I know that name - 'Hao Gin'? Does it seem familiar to anyone else?" The half-orc's brow is creased in a mixture of discomfort and consternation. He then addresses the stilyagi. "Nevertheless, we are Pathfinders, Haltani. We must EXPLORE thoroughly as our first duty. Who knows if we will get another such opportunity? I would be of the opinion that we should attempt to descend into the larger chamber, if for no other reason than to see that the son of Vargrim did not meet a similar fate."

So it looks as though Jamir made his save against paralysis, barely. He was down 1 point from cold and 4 from the claw, then +4 from Jawhar's channel (thank you!), so net -1 for the encounter. I assume one of the dwarves will translate the scrap of journal for those to do not read dwarven; Jamir does so only if Torvald and Tusk do not.

Jamir taps a small finger on the frozen notebook. "What about Barduk? If he ran off into the dwarves' tunnels, who is to say that his frozen remains do not lie somewhere in these ruins as his father's have, with additional clues needed for our mission to succeed?"

Jamir eyes the two doors on the south (?) wall of the room. "Perhaps our path lies through one of the doors remaining to us." Responding to Torvald, he says, "It is Jawhar's rope, but yes, perhaps what we seek lies below. If there are rooms here that were unaffected by whatever magic removed the rest of the complex, perhaps there are rooms and tunnels similarly intact on the level below us."

As Jamir utters the words Haltani comes out of one room and Tusk the other. Jamir must have gotten distracted by the startling revelations revealed within Vargrim's journal and not noticed the other two go into the southern rooms. When asked Uliyara says, just an old sleeping room in there, I checked it throughout nothing of interest. Oh, What did you find Tusk? Tusk walks out of the other bedroom carrying a finely wrought Dwarven Waraxe; presumably Vargrim's old weapon.

I'll assume you take 20 on search checks in these rooms..there's nothing else to be found in these chambers. Also unless you can dig through ice there doesn't appear to be anywhere else to go...this is all that remains of Nadlak's point. The rest was transported into Hao Jin's Tapestry according to Vargrim's journal

Jamir looks out into the expanse that is the chasm of the former Dwarven settlement of Nadlak's Point. Because of all the ice crystals on the floor and the mirror like sheen of the walls..the one light source practically lights up the entire chamber. It's actually quite beautiful. As before, the ice acts as a prism in several spots creating different hues of light that reflect of walls and ceiling alike. Despite all that beauty however, there is only emptiness to be found here.

The only intact chambers or rooms that remain of Nadlak's point have been explored by the group Jamir soon comes to realize. The 20ft drop proceeds for a few dozen yards of perfectly flat terrain at the bottom of the ledge. But, after that it appears that the hillside that once sheltered Nadlak's Point has collapsed in upon the empty remains of this lost city. The only thing Jamir sees at the bottom of the magically created pit is more ice and rocks...

Jamir can take a hint.

Jamir spends a couple of minutes admiring the beauty of the crystals below; he calls out to the others to come look before the spell fades. After he has seen enough, he stands and brushes off his clothes.

”I agree with Haltani. There is nothing more to see here. Much as I would like to explore below, we would need better climbing gear and a lot more blackfire clay to learn anything.” He shoulders his pack. ”We have a long walk back, my friends. Perhaps I will get another chance to get my new cloak!”

Craggark, despite misjudging how much time they have left in the day, agrees that there's likely little else to be found in this tomb.

"Should we attempt to take the remains of this dwarf with us? Maybe someone could hallow his bones if we return with him?"

Once the group decides, Craggark moves off with everyone to the entry chamber, where he replaces his ice cleats with his snowshoes once more.

Torvald glances back at poor Vargrim's mortal remains. "Perhaps it would be better to leave him here in the halls of his kin and clan. If the remainder of his folk were magically transported elsewhere, there's no telling where they could be. Better to leave here here, under stones worked by their hands, than to bury him in some common hole in the Linnorm Lands. If we had time I'd say we cremate him, but alas."

Gathering up the body, he carries it into one of the bedroom and gently arranges Vargrim in a dignified manner, closing the door behind him as he leaves. "Well, I suppose we're about done here? We must hurry if we're to return to Dalun before darkness falls."

Faenethor watches as Torvald arranges the deceased dwarf's mortal remains in a respectful way. He had almost asked to keep the clasp, but he knew this would be uncivilized. The group gathers all they have found and make for the exit. There's a sense of urgency, as you don't want to be exposed to the deadly Irrisen night. As you turn the corner to the grand hallway you stop in your tracks. There in front just in side the entrance way, stands an odd assortment of creatures and people.

On your left is a woman with dirty blond hair and flowing robes. Despite her attire (or lack therefore of) she seems untouched by the freezing conditions. Next to the woman is a crystalline creature that appears to be made entirely of ice, next to the ice creature and somewhat forward of the rest of the group appears to be one those snow bears you encountered at the gates of Dalun, and finally there's a man dressed in the uniform of a Dalun guard.

The woman speaks first,Surrender Uliyara and come with us quietly..or you will suffer the consequences There's still a bit of shock registering in your minds when you hear Uliyara say from the middle of your group, Kiryena.....Kiryena is that you? This really isn't necessary, mother misunderstands the situation, I assure you I'm in no danger.

The woman named Kiryena is visibly relieved to hear Uliyara's voice. You are my cousin Uliyara, and I am found of you however, orders are orders. These people are suspected agents of your aunt Urgalaena. I've been ordered to resc..retrieve you and capture the suspected spies for questioning....now come on lets go, we've not much time to get back to Dalun. She waves Uliyara towards her group and says the rest of you drop your weapons to the floor and prepare to be searched.

Uliyara looks concerned. If mother takes you back as prisoners, it might reflect bad on society. Kiryena is stubborn but, she can be reasoned with. You need to convenience her you are no threat to me or Dalun. Or, I must go back with her and you may spend some days in the dungeon. Uliyara, looks back and forth between the party and Kiryena's group. Genuinely torn by her dilemma.

If the party decides to negotiate there's a +14 modifier because Uliyara is obviously sympathetic toward your group and does not appear to be in danger. One check with aid another is best.PS there's a map with your locations in the drive

”As you were no doubt informed, my comrades and I did seek - and obtain - Baroness Nadya’s blessing for our expedition before we left your fair city. I am devastated at the thought that we may have done something to cause her to lose her trust in us.”

”If we have done so, I assure you that my friends and I have no idea what it might be. My blue-skinned colleague speaks the truth — if you saw signs of battle outside these ruins, you could not have missed the blood in the snow. Much of that blood once belonged to my new cl— to that dastardly winter wolf, Rigory, who spoke of dragging your dear cousin off to his cruel mistress, but a not-insignificant portion is attributable to the grievous wounds Rigory inflicted on Craggark when he hurled himself between the wolf and My Lady. Of course, I did the same, but the beast inexplicably determined that Craggark was the greater threat, and dealt him several savage blows. Craggark matched its savagery with his own, and as he says, it was his final heroic act before slipping into that unconsciousness which so often is but a brief interlude before the final voyage to the Boneyard that distracted the wolf sufficiently for the rest of us to drive him off. Only through the magical intercession of your own cousin - and the divine healing of our Sarenite priest, Jawhar - was Craggark spared from meeting Pharasma before we had even begun our explorations here. But that was not the only time we risked death to save Lady Uliyara. ”

”As you may know, we begged the Baroness’s permission to explore this area in the hope of recovering some evidence of the ancient dwarven settlement that once thrived in this land. Our dear comrades here” — Jamir gestures to Torvald and Tusk — “could not pass up the opportunity to learn more about their history while we were nearby on our trading mission. As you can see around you, we found what we were looking for.” Jamir points to the statutes, and then to the dwarven shield held by Craggark. ”Surrounded by the splendor of the antiquity of their people, who could be so cold-bl — so callous as to refuse their desire to press on just a little further?”

”Alas, we had a more … life-like experience of the dwarves who once resided in these halls than any of us would have wished for. I have no desire to bore my audience, however. I will step back to allow another of us to tell that most exciting part of our adventure.”

Diplomacy AA: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Jamir’s player solemnly reaches into his Rise of the Runelords-themed messenger bag and pulls out his Player Character Portfolio. ”There is no way I will accept a 9 after I spent the last half-hour writing that speech,” he says. ”I’ll use my re-roll now.”

Diplomacy AA: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

Much better. If that speech isn't worth a +2 on someone else's diplomacy check, then I should just give the heck up.

Jamir bows to the group from Dalun and takes a symbolic step back (one square to the west). He turns to Torvald, Tusk, and Faenethor with an expectant smile, hoping one of them will pick up the thread of their tale before Jawhar closes what Uliyara’s supposed rescuers may not yet realize is a negotiation, and that his friends will all have the presence of mind not to mention Vargrim’s journal.

Torvald chuckles, perhaps a trifle grimly, but his voice is clear as he addresses Kiryena. "I am Torvald Stonecask of Janderhoff, and I have never met this Urgalaena. Does she employ winter wolves as her agents? If you're smelling burnt hair that'd be my work--and I doubt a little scorching has improved Rigory's opinion of us. Nay, we're no friends of Urgalaena. In any event, we were unaware of your cousin's true identity until mere hours ago, when Rigory announced her name to us. Prior to that, she was disguised as a Varki traveller--another thing the Baroness was aware of, for she mentioned Uliyara's alias by name when we sought her blessing to visit these ruins."

Kiryena arches her eyebrow at the mention of Rigory. She looks directly at Uliyara is it true Malvory's runt pursued you? Uliyara nods and responds pursued, my companions chased him away...seared his flesh and gelded him...! Uliyara says with a smug smile as she crosses her arms. Kiryena looks to Jawhar You holy man, what do you have to say? Is all this true?

Bowing to Kiryena, Jawhar does his best to try to defuse the situation. "My lady, everything you have heard from my companions is true.

We travelled to Dalun with the Lady Uliyara from the Land of the Linorm Kings on a mission of trade. On the way, we joined up with some Ulfen from the settlement of Whiterook.

As you may know, Whiterook is also a trade target of the Baroness. Whiterook had just come under attack from forces that we believe to have been sent by your aunt Urgalaena. I apologize if using her name directly is an offense. I have not heard her title used, and I am unfamiliar with the political structure of Irrisen.

Whiterook was reeling from this attack when we passed by, and the people of Whiterook were clamoring for a retaliatory strike. My companions and I expended great effort in mollifying the populace and convincing their chief to come to Dalun peacefully in order to find out the truth from the Baroness herself.

After our business in Dalun was complete, we approached the Baroness personally to ask for permission to explore these ruins and to bring back some small proof of the clan and history of the dwarves who lived here. I assure you that the Baroness was quite aware that we were travelling with the Lady Uliyara, who we knew by the name of Haltani.

The Baroness may not have been aware of the Lady Uliyara's intention to accompany us to these ruins, but I assure you this was not a deception on our part. It is not our place to instruct the nobility in where to go within their own territory.

We would have travelled to the ruins on our own, and likely would now be frozen into statues somewhere in wilderness, had she not decided to help guide us.

As you have heard, after we arrived and started our excavation, the wolf Rigory came and offered us our lives if we simply turned aside and allowed him to take the Lady Uliyara. We are men of honor, however, and would never allow a companion to be taken in by forces who obviously meant her harm. With the Lady's help, we were able to drive off the wolf and finally proceed into the ruins to complete our adventure.

Inside we encountered a lone sentinel left over from the days of whatever cataclysm destroyed this community. A poor, unfortunate dwarf somehow locked into a state of undeath.

The ghoul had no interest in us, and was actually allowing us to examine him and to search what remained of his former rooms. However, when the Lady Uliyara approached, the foul thing recognized her heritage and animated, intent on destroying her.

Again, we were not about to abandon the Lady, and stepped forward to protect her.

As you can plainly see, we have expended great effort in protecting both the Lady Uliyara and the town of Dalun. We have worked against the desires of Urgalaena, and have likely earned great enmity from her forces. In our defense of the Lady Urgalaena, we have taken great injury and Craggark here has been brought back from the brink of death twice.

Now, we seek only to return to Kalsgard, likely never to return. With your permission, we would like to return now. We would gladly accept an escort back to Dalun, or will proceed separately if that is your wish, although we would appreciate the company of Lady Uliyara or some other guide to make sure we don't get lost."

Jawhar bows again, and awaits a response.

Kiryena takes all that Jawhar says and slowly nods, It seems you have performed Dalun a service, you have our gratitude. Under the circumstances, I don't think it necessary for you to surrender your weapons. You may follow us back to Dalun or make your own way back as you see fit. However, ... she looks directly at Uliyara I must insist that Uliyara come with us. Her mother has words for her. Kiryena has an eyebrow raised while glaring at Uliyara; almost challenging her. Arms crossed with a defiant response Uliyara blurts oh oh no need to get excited Kiryena, I welcome your company on the journey back. Besides, I can't wait until I get home to tell mother that I'm going to join the Pathfinders! Kiryena's startled look was obviously the effect Uliyara was going for as you see a brilliant smile of satisfaction overcome her features.

For her part Kiryena says nothing except mumble, Pathfinders I should have guessed . Uliyara walks over to pet the bear and the Dalun guard breaks out a pipe and tobacco, offering some to any of the party members who smoke. Soon you gather your belongings and at Uliyara's behest follow Kiryena's group into Dalun. Once or twice along the way, Kiryena offers her magic to a party member that seems to be succumbing to the cold. Other than that, the trip is uneventful. Uliyara gives the entire party a hug and promises to see them soon as you part way at the gates. Dark is upon Irrisen so Kiryena says I'll make arrangements for you to stay at the same Inn you did last night. Don't worry about the bill , it's the least we owe you. I would caution however, that you leave Irrisen in the morning and do not tarry. I'll omens have a way of following outsiders in Irrisen. Questions would be asked if you extended your stay.

Once we are safely back inside of the inn, sipping hot coffee with our feet in front of a fireplace:

"Given our experiences so far, I would recommend leaving first thing in the morning. If not for how tired I am, I would recommend not even staying the night.

As it is, we should leave as soon as physically possible in the morning.

Should we stop in at Whiterook and check to see that everything is good there. I am still a little suspicious about how quickly the warriors were mollified."

"So, it's Uliyara, is it?" the frostkin abruptly begins after sidling over to her halfway through the journey back to Dalun. "We've not been properly introduced. I'm Craggark Frostkin. A pleasure to finally meet you. Tell me, did Haltani ever exist?"

After waiting for her answer, the half-orc continues. "If you do have an interest in trade and are wanting to join the Pathfinder Society, yeah? I've got a group of people within the Society who would be very interested in talking to you. Well, both Torvald and I do."

Torvald, as you haven't made your Faction Card check yet for the Exchange, you could do so with Uliyara now: "Recruit a named NPC merchant, trader, smuggler, or similar figure..." I'll give you an AA. Alternately, if you're re-thinking your faction, I could simply role-play it out for flavour.

...

"So you see that the Society has different areas with different goals, all acting towards the aims of the society at-large. Consider this an invite, Uliyara. It would be a pleasure to have you as a colleague."

I would still like an apology for being lied to, but that's probably akin to hoping for a warm outdoor bath here in Irrisen... Craggark grunts and remains silent the rest of the journey home, lost in thought.

Hao Gin....Hao Gin, I know that name...

The next morning, after demolishing three plates of breakfast (and getting a hp back after sleeping in a bed - woo hoo!), the half-orc belches politely and discusses Jawhar's suggestions from the night previous.

"Yup, let's leave a trail of dust. I would be fine with skipping Whiterook the second time around - it was a pretty hefty hike off of the river's edge, and we don't have an honour guard leading us this time - unless they try to snare us with their silly river trap again..."

That night, when Jamir is on his third or fourth pint of thick Irriseni beer in front of the fireplace, he yawns, stretches, and stands up. "It was quite an adventure, my friends, but I think I shall stumble to my room and get some sleep. We have an early day tomorrow, and with Haltani - or Uliyara - returned to her palace, I alone will be responsible for steering the Fortune Seeker! Sleep well!"

With that, Jamir walks out of the common room to the stairs, weaving only slightly.

After a decent night's rest Jawhar gets up early as is his custom to do his morning prayers. After he is through he heads downstairs to get a light bite to eat before packing his belongings and waking the others. He's only mildly surprised to see Baronesses Nadya sitting in a comfortable cushioned chair sitting by the fire sipping tea. There are two serving girls from the Inn nearby ready to wait on her whims.

As she sees Jawhar come down the stairs her face grows stern. I could blame you and your party for putting these foolish notions into my daughters head...but, I'd be lying to say they weren't already there. she motions Jawhar to sit and continues. I've fought my sisters and cousins tooth and nail about the direction Irrisen should take. It's done me no good trying to placate both sides. She sighs irrevocably.

Her emotions are a bit irritated and forlorn. She straightens her gown as she stands. Marjory, the elderberry jam is delicious as usual. Please send over a couple jars to the palace. A very pleased Inn keepers wife appears from around the corner blushing and curtsying deeply, Yes baroness! I'll send some right away! The rosy cheeked Marjory scurries off into the kitchen dragging one of the serving girls with her.

I'd appreciate the Pathfinders discretion if they do decide to visit Dalun again. There are still forces at work in this land that would not appreciate your presence. However, if you do "visit" please notify the palace of your activities that way...no miss-understandings can take place? Her gaze lingers on Jawhar for a moment to make sure he understood that last part. The Baronesses turns to leave but, first points at the end table next to the cushioned chair she was sitting in. Do be a dear and deliver that letter when you arrive in Kalsgrad with that she is off. Three serving girls and the Inn keeper fuss over her until they go outside. On the table is a sealed envelope addressed to Venture Captain Bennary it has the seal of Barroness Nadya on the imprinted wax.

Ok guys I lied a little will probably do a debriefing post with Captain Bennary tomorrow sometime. In the mean time those of you who haven't contacted me yet please confirm I have your email. I'll need your inventory sheets with equipment you had to start the adventure and stuff you bought to make sure it meshes with what I recorded. Remember you all bought extra rations but used three of them (each) along the way. Also if you plan on changing a skill or feat ect.. remember re-training is "free" before second level but a GM still needs to sign off on it. Lastly for Jawhar; you suspect the gladdringgoch you posses is of value to your lodge but, may sit in archives for years. In order for you to reap any immediate influential benefit; you will most likely have to identify the clan this relic came from. ie: pay for an identify spell or hire a sage to research it.

Jawhar is quiet and attentive through the Baroness' comments as it is obvious that she expects no reply.

When she mentions the letter, he will respond.

"It will be as you have asked, Baroness."

He will stand as she does and bow as she leaves.

Then, he will turn to Marjory.

"Elderberry jam? If the Baroness is such a fan, I must try some myself. If you would please set out a small breakfast, I am sure my companions will be about shortly.

Perhaps you could claim to be out of ale this morning? We do have a long way to travel and I would appreciate getting on our way as early as possible, if you take my meaning."

The journey from Dalun to Kalsgard proceeds without incident. Venture-Captain Benarry initially expresses disappointment that your party did not recover a piece of the Sky Key, her chagrin quickly turns to excitement as she reads through Vargrim’s journal. Well you've done as good as can be expected. You can turn in the relics you found and gather your pay from the quarter master.

By evidence of this letter here.. she pats the desk in which Baroness Nadya's letter lies. The Society owes you thanks for finding, a new ally in an unforgiving country. We'll be using my network of contacts to keep in touch with Uliyara. Perhaps Baroness Nadya may even be open to further trading. As for Uliyara I'll send her some books on customs of the Inner Sea for news from Irrisen, for the time being. Her mother has some concerns about her daughter openly joining the society. However, she does leave some intresting wiggle room. We will see. Captian Benarry looks very pleased as she dismisses the group.
As you are collecting your reward from the quarter master you overhear some crewmen whispering, I heard he's comming here because he's too sick to finish his mission! a low whistle issues forth from the crew member who was listening. He replies, We've never had someone that high up in society ranks up here!

This concludes From Under the Ice. Please allow me a couple of days to email your chronicle and inventory sheets. It's been a pleasure. Enjoyed playing with you guys.
