Background
Skinner is an ex-vet who served in Gulf War I and the Panamanian Conflict. He was a sub par student (well, outside of Mathematics courses anyway!) but excelled in sports. He had the pick of Colleges as a highly regarded Texas High School Tight End who made second team all American.
That was NOT the life that Skinner wanted to lead. His father was a Vietnam War Vet, his Grandfather a WWII Vet and his Great Grandfather enlisted at 15 for WWI. Hell, if his family had been in the US at the time he's pretty sure he'd have had a Civil War vet ancestor as well.
He went to play for the Navy instead. After 4 years he entered service just as Bush entered office. A few sort years later, Skinner was involved in his first action, the Panamanian Conflict. His expertise was Demolitions and damned if he wasn't one of the best. No feeling quite like the eruption of gun fire from hostiles after they see s!&! they thought was secured sent to kingdom come.
While not a Seal, he just didn't have the chops for it, as a member of a demo team it was the next best thing. Well for Skinner anyway. He survived though he lost a handful of friends which dampened his enthusiasm for the rush of combat a bit.
Iraq was the next significant combat that Skinner saw, though the view from a carrier group was less exciting than his experience on the ground in Panama. For an Adrenaline junkie, the experience sucked.
By 1992 with Clinton elected Skinner figured that private life was the way to go as he believed military funding would be cut and by extension his ability to make a buck. He moved back to Texas and got a job with an Uncle in the construction field.
For 9 years he handled private demos around the southwest and made a fair living. He never quite got around to getting married though considered it with a few girlfriends. September 11, 2001 changed all of that though. It was clear the world would never be the same again.
He felt he was too old to enlist though and figured that private contracting would be the way to go, so he made a phone call to a buddy he knew that knew someone at a private military contracting company, Blackwater.
There's not a lot to say about his time with the company as most of it was classified. Suffice to say by 2007, he had had enough of the work. It was dirty money and the group just did not operate as above board as the Military did. In some respects this was good. IN others bad. For Skinner, the good began to outweigh the bad. Once more he retired and once again moved home to Texas.
This time, between the money he made with his Uncle and as a Contractor he started his own construction, or destruction company, as he likes to call it.
Another 10 years have come and gone and Skinner is now contemplating his legacy, maybe it was time to finally settle down? Of course, life with Hep C ain't great and it's hard to disclose that and keep a woman but it's getting to be now or never time. Sleeping around after all had its benefits and drawbacks.
His current project in El Paso has led him to explore the night life as on-line dating has been more treacherous for him than his military service had been!
The Rodeo, a rough place he hears, is where he has decided to go looking for Ms. Right tonight. Course, Skinner is a rough guy...

I'm gonna start working on my background shortly. I was trying to make sure I did the math and everything correct on this guy first.

Basics is gonna be an Intelligence Analyst for the Marines, hence the High Knowledges and Flat decent Mental Scores. I also wanna work in probably spending a small stent in the K9 squad before retiring from the force after making an enemy of his ex-wife (Another K9 worker.)

~scratches head~ Any recommendations/adjustments anyone sees I need to make?

Talomyr checking in with my submission Justin Travers.

@Vitaliano da Riva - Only thing that come to mind is that if you look at the character creation guidelines on the campaign tab - GM FD is giving 13-9-5 for abilities.

With the extra 4 points Leftover, I'd pop it into a 2 in Alertness.

Hmmm, did I screw up?

I suppose I could put 1 in Alertness, adjust to 2 in Alertness by dragging one of the Ability Freebies to it. (So like the Stealth). I'd gain back 2 more in freebies.

Then I'd put two ranks in either Finance or Science. (I think Science makes more sense with the rest of the skill set but I think Finance would be more useful and it'd be nice to be smart enough to be able to actually make money / work stocks a bit or something.)

Hmmm...That'd give me 6 points then leftover?

I'm half tempted to spend 5 to get Int 4 to make him better at all the things he's "good" at.

But then I'm half curious to save the rest for after embrace. (Like picking up a Discipline as if it were a clan discipline for me.)

Not sure you screwed up, I just saw 4 "Leftover" so I figured the one hole I did not see filled was Alertness, thus my recommendation!

I was considering keeping 5 open for the same Merit but I wanted that 4th dot of Stamina plus I am not 100% sure we can keep any points back for post Embrace purchases. If we can, I just might! :-)

Fair, I'll await the GM's decision. I figured I screwed up on the "XP" spending.

This system is still very foreign to me as it's only my second character ^_^

I am fine with holding back or saving points for embrace.

GM Falling Darkness wrote:

Hmmmmm. I may have to reconsider point allocation.

Same here. If accepted I might consider moving a couple points here and there. Flaws and such, too.

Alright, I am gonna start doing some reading and reasoning before I head into making proper backstory and history.

Again, still new to this for the most part so I'm not fully 100% sure on grasping dots vs ability so to speak so I'm doing a lot of reading on that, Merits, Flaws to flesh out as best I can true to the character sheet I've built.

I actually put 1 point already in a Merit that was supernatural. (I believe those are only earned at turning, so consider that purely a placeholder.) The aforementioned Merit is Inoffensive to Animals.

I plan on also taking the Make X a Clan Discipline. (Which I have a certain discipline in mind already to make such....but if I end up getting embraced by a clan that already has it, I'm gonna try and work up a back up idea.)

Edit: Could I get a link to the book by which we will be using the ruleset? I wanna be sure I'm researching from the right place.

Backstory/Filler:

Vincent Delaney wasn't really a prodigy child more than he was a hard worker. From an early age, he was drilled with the importance of having a goal and working hard to achieve it. This, more so than exemplary intelligence, was why he graduated at a young age from high school. But he didn't stop there, he quickly moved onto college and got his Bachelor's degree in Computer Sciences.

But that wasn't really his goal. It simply was a stepping stone to put him in the position to enter the Marines as an officer. He entered the ranks of the few and the proud shortly before the Iraq and Afghanistan wars as an officer. Given his degree in Computer Sciences, he was eventually put in charge of the Intelligence Specialists unit. It wasn't a glamorous job, hell it was honestly a boring job to him but with the down time he continued his education using the perks given to an Active Duty military member and soon had a Masters in both Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering by the end of his first term.

He did well for himself, keeping out of trouble, continuing his education, spending his money wisely and saving most of it once he erased his debt. By the time it was time to re-enlist, he had a small sum in a nest egg and simply dumped his re-enlistment bonus directly into his savings account. His second term took him to the Military Police side of things. He spent a year in Fort Leonardwood training in the basics of the MOS, meanwhile he kept busy by taking extra college classes in the same field. To say that he was was a focused man would be an understatement.

Upon Graduating and getting assigned to oversee his new unit, he met his first wife. Both were assigned to their respective countries units on base in Camp Panzer Kaserne, Boblingen (Germany). She only had six months left in her enlistment at the time they met and they bonded over their love of animals. Vincent had been lucky indeed to have been put over the unit he was, as the K9 unit was also under his command. Though it wasn't exactly common for an Officer to work amongst the Enlisted, Vincent found the experience to be enjoyable and often was found learning under the Staff NCOs of the K9 unit.

Amelie and Vincent began dating openly once her enlistment came to an end and soon they were married (mind you after a fair bit of inquiries and paperwork) in the second year of his second enlistment. And for the most part their relationship was good but the strain of Vincent's almost obsessive drive towards his goals eventually weighed heavily upon their relationship. It was close to the end of his second enlistment when he was deployed for the last time and his tour was extended a full year past his EOS. His wife had already moved back to the states, a full citizen before the deployment.

Vincent had hoped that the deployment would end on schedule, but like most, it ran over and by the time he came home his wife had moved on unable to bear the issues of being new to the country, dealing with her aloof husband, and adjusting to civilian life. He made it home, only to find divorce papers on the table and his wife completely moved out. He understood and did as she asked. They sold the place and both moved their separate ways. Vincent moved on to El Paso.

He wasn't sure what he was looking for, or hell what he wanted to do with his life at this point. This was the first time he'd done something without really a plan in mind and with the recent changes causing him to rethink his life, he chose El Paso as a gateway to transitioning from the military life back to the civilian world. He'd still be able to talk with and hang out with the people he called family while slowly spreading his wings and finding purpose once again. Such as it was that brought him into the Rodeo Bar and Grill most weekends. It was only three months he'd moved to El Paso and already he was turning into a regular, though despite the waitress's attempts, he typically only kept to one or two scotches a night. Still living mostly off his savings, Vincent contemplated what he wanted to do with his life while laughing and watching the college kids and hanging out a bit with the Enlisted who frequented the bar.

Alright, so I did some alterations from the original posting. I did change to having Alertness 3 vs Awareness 3 (I didn't realize Awareness was sensing hoodoo around you vs Alertness was just paying attention to your surroundings.)

I adjusted the age a bit, I felt 24 was a bit too young so I changed to 27. I'm hoping that my backstory highlights most all of his skills. Some of the skills I didn't really specifically notate just because I feel they are "common" skills that would be picked up due to the lifestyle and training of a military member. So on that note I focused more on his knowledges and the Animal Ken. I didn't really get into Medicine but for those not in the know, you learn a lot of field medicine in the Marines (more so than 1 dot's description but a bit less than 2 dots. I assume that some of this was learned while deployed from the corpsmen assigned to his unit. As a pursuer of knowledge in general and in the interest of taking care of his men, he'd do everything to be prepared in case someone was shot or otherwise in the field of battle.)

Let me know if you have any questions, concerns, remarks, or whatever...yea, I think that's it. Please look over and make sure I haven't screwed anything up. Again, this is my second Vampire character and my first in the V20 realm. (The other is in Storyteller Shadow's wonderful Dark Ages)

PS I intend for the Old Flame to Amelie Delaney but feel free to make your own person if you prefer to become an issue for him ^_^.

So I realize I have a couple of questions as I'm reading various information and the like.

So question one, I know that we are not building our character to enter an exact clan, but are we able to at least exclude a choice due to our dislike of the clan? By the by, mine is Nosferatu. I like to be able to talk and they suffer hard from the absolute ugliness of their persona (Automatic 0 Appearance if I remember and no allowance to ever bring it up.)

Question two, as you can see, I have Animal Ken as a "major" skill and some emphasis in his past. Also I do plan on taking Animalism as a Clan Discipline (I don't plan on limiting my potential clans, hence why I'm holding back the Freebies to buy it as a "Clan Discipline"). It mentions in the books that I should probably make sure my Storyteller is ok with the semi emphasis of the use of animals as "allies" and their use of them creatively. So, if that isn't the case, then I'll need to alter his background/skills a bit and make it less focal.

Question three, I did choose Status as one of my background and after reading a bit, I feel like that I may have chosen poorly as it is more designed for an established Vampire and not a Mortal. Should I change that or can this be explained in some manner via roleplay? If I should change it, the most obvious for my character would be Resources 2 instead of Status 2. Which if that's the case, I would probably go ahead and spend an extra Freebie (Making it 5 leftover) and make it a Resources 3.

Status will be fine and I can work with it, animal allies are all good and animalism is a cool discipline. I am fine with the no Nos request and will do my best on all requests barring major story collapse.

~nods~ Hmm...I feel like I wanna still get that resource 3 some way. Lemme see here.

Hmmm Phobia sounds good. Scorpions are a good one if allowed. I remember waking up once to one drawing up my camies. Damn near stabbed myself with a kbar. Perfect annoyance to have a fear of.

Still here still good for this one!

Looks like I'm not going to be able to get anything together. Everyone have extra fun on my behalf! :)

Checking in too. Still here and still very interested!

Hey Samnell, I will be going over the characters in the next two days. Finish a submission and you too are in. Everybody else, discussion will be opened and you are in. Also gameplay thread is open so that you may all dot in.
Enjoy the quote and ponder its meaning for the prologue. In my heart I know how I have longed to delve once more into the darkness. My extended table top of this game has lasted more then twelve years in one chronicle form or another. I am so very excited to invite you all to join me there.

That's very generous of you. Can't promise anything, but I'll give it my best shot.

I made it. Had to hurry a little, by which I mean a whole lot, so he's nowhere near so fleshed out as I'd like. But he's got mechanics and a backstory.

Room for another?

Unfortunately no not here but keep an eye and there may be a place to add someone
