Falcon's Hollow/Diamond Lake AP

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Perched at the edge of civilized lands, the small town of Falcon's Hollow on the edge of Diamond Lake has always had to rely on itself to solve its problems. Meanwhile, the uncaring lumber barons and the equally uncaring mine managers squeeze the common folk for every last copper, deaf to their pleas. Now the hacking coughs of the sick are heard throughout town. The plague has come to Falcon's Hollow and the town's leaders can't be bothered to stop it.

But the plague isn't the only concern in the small town near Diamond Lake. Kobold sightings have increased over recent months, a cause of great concern for some. Both more secret and more dire, however, are rumors of strange undead creatures infested with tiny green worms stalking the hills south of Falcon's Hollow.

Those familiar with Paizo’s products will easily be able to pick up seeds from description that reveal what the nature of the campaign will be, but hopefully some shred of mystery remains. Though it starts off fairly simple and “small-town,” it will eventually lead to world-changing events.

I am looking for a larger group of PCs (size will depend on interest, but I’m open to any number from 5-8) for a long-term campaign utilizing a few different story arcs from Paizo, along with a few other stand-alone modules inserted as well.

This game will be based on the Pathfinder RPG rules system, and will also utilize some of the systems from Ultimate Campaign and Mythic Adventures. I’d like this to be roleplay heavy, which actually gives some posting flexibility. I would expect 4-5 posts during the week and 1 on the weekend during times with roleplaying, and a bit more often during combat. As usual, there will be times when people can’t post as often, and as long as everyone is open about this, we’ll make it work.

Character Creation:
To keep things simple, we’re going to use PFS rules for character creation (though I may be open to allowing some things which are banned in PFS—check with me first). That’s a 20-point buy, 2 traits, full HP at first level, 150 starting gold, etc. Again, feel free to ask if you have questions about this.

As for background, your character needs both a tie to the well being of the Falcon’s Hollow/Diamond Lake region (live there, have family or friends who live there, etc.) and also a reason to want to leave. This campaign will be heavily tied to the area, but will also definitely leave it for bigger things. If you’re not familiar with the region, come up with a background that ties you to a small town based around both lumber mills and mining, and I’ll work with you to flesh out the specifics.

I hope I’ve answered most of the initial questions, and I’m very excited about this campaign. I hope others are as well!

I'll have an application in this evening if time allows. Is this in Goralion, and if so in what region?

Liberty's Edge

I will be submitting a character today or tomorrow.

Is there any background material we can look at to get a feel for the region?

Are non-core races allowed?

I'll think a little and submit an aplication as well if I can come up with something good.

I'm a fan of slightly more rp based games when there's a good group together to keep the momentum of things. I'm posting interest, I'll see what I can come up with.

I'm dotting.

I'm guessing he means the Falcon's Hallow located in Andoran.

Regardless I'm interested in watching

Howdy Seamus/Igmar. I'll be submitting a character too, as soon as I work up a profile/concept. I've not played this AP; in fact I'd not even heard of it and had to google the name.

It would be good to know where in Golarion you're planning to set the AP, or if you're going to set it in a another world entirely. Makes picking deities, traits, etc a bit easier on we poor players.

No idea what character/concept I'm going to go with yet! :)

Well, I'm interested. Will start tinkering and see what I come up with.

Ahh, sorry for not giving some Golarion context. As Ekeli said, this will take place in Falcon's Hollow in Andoran, though don't read too far into that, because in combining it with Diamond Lake, many changes will be made. But it will be in Andoran certainly.

@The Great Rinaldo! Yes, non-core races are allowed, but only the so-called "Featured Races" from d20pfsrd.com. As for background material, that might be tough because I'm combining a few locales. But if you come up with something general for a small town, I'll help fill in some blanks with specifics. I know that's not perfect, but I think it's best.

Liberty's Edge

Sounds interesting, let me come out with something

Dark Archive

I am very interested. I am thinking a human or half-elf falconer ranger.

Scarab Sages

Here is what I am thinking. Hope it fits with what you were looking for. I am very familiar with Pathfinder in tabletop gaming, but this would be my first Play by Post. Thanks.

Darik “Bee Sting” Gillidook
Male Halfling Fighter 1
Neutral Good

Strength 14 (+2)
Dexterity 16 (+3)
Constitution 12 (+1)
Intelligence 10 (+0)
Wisdom 10 (+0)
Charisma 15 (+2)

Height: 3' 3"
Weight: 42 lb
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Light brown
Skin: Dark Almond

Feats: Weapon Finesse and Toughness
Traits: TBD

Darik was born and raised in Falcon’s Hallow and at an early age developed an aptitude for climbing trees and all the subsequent mischief that might entail. His abilities were spotted by local lumbermen, and soon he was employed as a tree climber. He has spent the last several years in this position, but longs for more. Wanderlust has set in, and he has since given his notice of resignation in hopes of striking it rich as an adventurer. His employers (and the townsfolk) think he’s crazy for leaving a job with a pension and benefits, etc.
As for the nickname, a large, drunken lumberman on a weekend bender once challenged Darik to a fight in a local tavern. Bad idea.

Liberty's Edge

Here is drayen's character submission. Background is in the profile under a spoiler. I am starting on the stats now.

Liberty's Edge

I have statted up the character. I still need to add one trait. The animal companion is just a placeholder right now. I will add in the correct stats later today.

@Jack Rabbit Slim would you mind making an alias for your character, and then putting the background/stats in spoilers on the profile page of that character with a full stat block as well? You can see an example of what it should look like here. If you need help making an alias, etc., I'll post more.

Scarab Sages

I have made the stat block. Just need to figure out how to add the spoiler button to show hidden text. Can you guide me on that?

Other than that, I will make an alias.

At work now, so will post it all this evening.

@ JRS to put something in a spoiler tab, put the word "spoiler=<title of spoiler." in between two brackets at the beginning, and put "/spoiler" in between two brackets at the end, and it will put it in the tab. Hope this makes sense!

Here is my submission. Gear is not complete, based on things I PMed you about.

Background is done for this submission. I just need to format the stats, I'll have them ready later this evening.

Think I did it correctly. Let's see.

Profile page should have all info.

Liberty's Edge

I'm in Falcon's Hollow...looking for a wee bit of adventure or gold.

Liberty's Edge

Bit odd to see so many other halflings about but there's always more room for us. Get it? 'Cus we're small! Ah, you'll laugh later.

Stats are done.

Ok, here then is my submission, Ruhk the Dandy, ready for adventure.

Glad to see there's been some interest! I'm definitely still going to leave recruitment open for a while, but here's a summary of the submissions so far.

The Great Rinaldo!-Sutandir Zarill-Alchemist
drayen-Alleran Odeber-Ranger (falconer)
Jack Rabbit Slim-Darik "Bee Sting" Gillidook-Fighter
Kervos Fletcher-Inquisitor
Jakob Butler-Rogue
BoggBear-Ruhk "The Dandy"-Magus

Others who have expressed interest:

Barvo Delancy
bi0philia
ShadowyFox
Ekeli
Aishe Grynne
El Ronza
Corsario

Keep the submissions coming!

Alright, I believe I'll work up a Human Verdant blooded sorcerer, he'll be a native of Falcon's Hollow, an adamant opponent of the defiling of the land perpetrated by mining and lumber(ing, lol).

This is Barvo Delancy. I present Rakarech the Druid for your consideration, still playing with the fluff a bit so I can flesh out his personality. The concept here is a young druid with a very rough background trying to learn about the world. Extremely curious, but suspicious and dangerous.

Grand Lodge

I Submit Tirion Searles. An elven Wizard sent from the Grand Lodge to discover more about the strange Undead that have been arising. Specializes in Evocation and Archery. On a side note. I used PC Gen to set this character up. Is there a place I can upload his Stat Block?

Triton, if you can output it to a text block, you can just paste it into the free-form section of your profile. I use Hero Lab for that and it works well, hopefully your tool can do the same.

Grand Lodge

I tried making a web link with an htm file. let me know if it worked?
please?

@Triton please use a spoiler tab in the "About" tab in your character's profile to post a stat block and a background. Thanks!

Grand Lodge

Updated Character Tab with Spoilers. Am I forgetting anything?

@Triton looks great! Only thing left is a background.

Grand Lodge

Crap, I knew I forgot something. I will post his background in a few. Breaking out the Ultimate Campaign. In the end, the Society has sent him to Falcon's Hallow to investigate the Undead and Kobold claims.

Grand Lodge

k, Background is on his About page. Sorry, not much of a story teller.

Liberty's Edge

Fell you have all your bases covered. If later you feel you need an extra player, post here and I'll propose something.

Good luck!

I have a character build I've wanted to try (Monk Maneuver Master), because of how much I enjoyed playing the fighter version of the build.

I have a standing habit of not creating an alias until (unless) selected for a game. Since I generally try to avoid reusing a character concept, this reduces the number of orphaned aliases I build up in my profile.

Shartol:

quick background hook:
"Brother Shartol? There is no easy way to say this, but, there was an accident. A wagon wheel broke, and the load fell onto Grotian, crushing him." The senior monk continued talking, but Shartol wasn't really listening anymore.

Grotian had traveled to the monastery to visit with his son, and to remember Farria, Shartol's mother and his wife, on the 5th anniversary of her death.

As he had been for the past few days, Shartol found himself remembering details of his past. The normal things, like getting in trouble and being disciplined by his parents or arguing with them because they wouldn't let him do what he wanted, or time spent playing together, singing together, holding each other, and simply celebrating being. Shartol also remembered, again, the fight he had with Grotian which ended with him leaving Falcon's Hollow behind, going to seek out his own future, his own path. Every boy thinks he knows everything by 13, and Shartol had been no exception.

The Monks of the Extended Hand monastery had found him, starving and weak from exposure, near the roadway. They brought the young teenager in and started healing him, and started teaching him as a way to heal more than just his body. Shartol had been actively studying at the monastery for 3 years before he finally wrote his parents and let them know that he was alive and doing well. The eventual return post informed him of Farria's death two years earlier.

This visit had been the first reunion of father and son since the boy ran away from home. The timing and justification for the reunion kept things subdued, but the two spent time together, some of which was crying in each other's arms.

There were traces of tears in Shartol's eyes, and his voice cracked. "He should be cremated, so that I can carry him home and bury him with my mother. I'll have to get help finding her grave from someone there." As he made that realization, the young man lost the fight, and the tears began streaming down his face.

Two weeks later, he was in Falcon's Hollow, standing over his parents' shared grave, Wondering what Irori could possibly have in mind for him next.

Archetype mechanics Questions:
I should note that my desire to play this character is not tied to these answers. These questions are about trying to get onto the same page so as to reduce conflicts over mechanics during play:

Monk weapons can be used during a Flurry of Blows, but nothing explicitly says they can be used during a Flurry of Maneuvers. Do you allow monk weapons to be used as part of a Flurry of Maneuvers?

There is no formal rule about the order of additional attacks when granted. Do you have a specific way you would like me to handle the order of additional attacks provided from a Flurry of Maneuvers, or are you willing to let me play around with the order when I want to (increases the character's mechanical power significantly)? The 2 most common orders I know of are Primary/First bonus/Secondary/Second Bonus/Tertiary/Third Bonus or Primary/Secondary/Tertiary/First Bonus/Second Bonus/Third Bonus.

The Flurry of Maneuvers says "may add" at each point. Would you accept adding only 1 Flurried Attack once more are available (and reducing the penalty applied to maneuvers during the attack series as a result)? Once 3 are available, the question applies just as readily to only applying 2 Flurried maneuvers.

My apologies for the questions, but this is a very mechanics heavy build with a significant tactical capability. Interestingly enough, I think the monk version of this build is better able to deal damage when not performing maneuvers than the fighter build is!

@Seamus - since you're using PFS rules, I need to ask you if you'd consider permitting a catfolk character? I have a number of core race characters, but for once I'd like to play something not-so-usual.

@Aishe yes, Catfolk are definitely acceptable. All of the "featured" races are okay, just none of the "uncommon" races

If the character is far more mechanics intensive than you wish to deal with, please, tell me so that I can consider a different submission. I was, literally, fiddling with what I could do with this set of mechanics when I saw your advertisement, and I thought it seemed a good match. If you believe it is NOT a good math, there's zero wrong with that, I would just appreciate knowing about it.

EDIT: The point of playing these games is to have fun. That includes the person running the game. It does no good for anyone to expect the judge to deal with things the judge won't enjoy. Thus my question here.

I'm thinking I may submit a cleric of Sarenrae (I always misspell the name), with an ailing father who has worked as a miner. Obviously the fact that his father is quite horribly sick (and likely dying) will keep him in town for a decent amount of time and then cause him to leave when the time is right.

@hustonj sorry I read your post late and night and forgot to respond. I haven't had a chance to look through the whole character, but it looks fine from my quick glances. I have no problem with a mechanics-heavy character as long as you roleplay it well. And I'm also not too strict so we should be okay with playing around with the order of attacks. But let me give it a better look and I'll have more feedback.

Check. Thank you for the reply.

BTW, I figure the Flurry of Blows series is Prime/Big bonus/Second/Second Bonus/Third/Third bonus, so I think that SHOULD BE the default.

The munchkin wants to be able to choose order. The player thinks it is a bad idea to choose order. That would let the character start with an attack action equivalent Dirty Trick every round he full attacks. Too much power, I think (even though the default flurry order would still make it the second attack!).

Real life keeps distracting me from doing important stuff - such as trying to come up with a character I like.

If I'm reading the posts correctly - and I'm certain that I'll be corrected if I'm wrong - the following characters have been submitted so far:

Arcane

  • Ruhk "The Dandy" Ekenskold - CG Human (Ulfen) M Magus
  • Sutandir Zarill - CG Half-elf M Alchemist
  • Triton Searles - NG Elf M Wizard

    Divine

  • Kervos Fletcher - CG Half-orc M Inquisitor
  • Rakarech - N Half-orc M Druid

    Melee

  • Alleran Odeber - NG Human (Andoren) M Ranger
  • Brother Shartol - LN Human M Monk
  • Darik "Bee Sting" Gillidook - NG Halfling M Fighter

    Skilled

  • Jakob Butler - N Halfling M Rogue

There are also several folks - including myself - who have indicated interest but not yet submitted a character.

Looking at the characters so far, I'm tempted to submit my halfling bard from a Jade Regent game which lost it's GM during the first encounter, or go ahead and design that oh-so-hopefully-not-too-cliche catfolk or tiefling rogue I'd like to play just once...

  • Grand Lodge

@Aishe I think we are good when it comes to divine. I would go ahead and just submit your cat folk.

    A few comments:

I'll be keeping recruiting open at least through the end of the week, and probably through Labor Day weekend, and then I'll close it off and pick our group.

@hustonj So, if I'm reading the archetype correctly, at 1st level you can, as part of a full attack, make a single attack (which could be an actual attack or a combat maneuver that is capable of being made as an attack action) and a combat maneuver (either one that takes an attack action or a standard action). So, for instance, you could do a dirty trick and then an attack, you could do a disarm and a grapple, or you could do an attack and then a grapple. Those are just a few options, but that's how I'm reading it. Also, if you're going to use Dirty Trick, I would want it to be described well, and not just "I use Dirty Trick to blind the creature." If described well, I think it could be a really cool narrative.

@Aishe I do not often select based on the traditional four roles (at least that's not the most important part), so I would say make the best character you can, whichever that happens to be.

@ShadowyFox and bi0philia I love both of these ideas, so I hope you're both still planning on submitting!

*Laughs* Such blatant favoritism! What can I do to counter that I wonder?
*Drops a fiver on the floor* Oh look, someone dropped some money, it's not mine, so it must be yours GM Seamus.

@Ruhk Did I mention Magus is my favorite class? Don't assume too much haha

Haha, I never assume, I find it is very bad for the complexion.
