About Kervos Fletcher

Background:
Kervos Fletcher knew two things with absolute certainty in his childhood: he wasn't quite the same as the rest of his family, and his mother loved him without any reservation. It wasn't until later in his life, when he asked his mother what one of the neighbor children meant by calling him an "ugly half-orc" that anything but those certainties mattered. He received answers that helped him understand more about why he was different, although there were still some questions that she wouldn't respond to. How come his sisters, Livia and Elze, weren't half-orcs? Why wasn't the man he called Father a half-orc? Regardless of her reluctance to answer those questions, Kervos still received unconditional love and support from his family. As he grew up and the difference between himself and his sisters became more pronounced, he took on the role of brotherly protector, while at the same time they were fiercely aggressive against anyone treating him differently because of his race. Word traveled fast throughout the village they lived in as they grew older, and none of the other children dared to cross the three inseparable Fletcher children.

When Kervos was 13, his mother fell ill. Her health worsened quickly and despite the efforts of the local healer, she died soon thereafter. The family was swept up in sorrow, and received support from the community, but eventually that also came to pass. As life tried to right itself, the dynamic of the family changed. Livia, the oldest of the three children, tried to take on the mothering role vacant in their lives, cleaning up their home and making sure Kervos and Elze were taken care of. Kervos, for his part, tried to work odd helper jobs to earn money for the family. Elze, the youngest, resumed her childhood of playing with neighbor children, although she never regained the constant happiness she had once possessed. Kervos' father reacted very simply to the loss of his wife: he drank, constantly. It became a habit that as soon as he finished working for the day, he would begin drinking himself into a stupor at the local tavern. He would then come home and, without fail, see Kervos and fall into a drunken rage. No words were ever spoken. Kervos never learned, nor did he dare ask, why the man he had called father his entire life could no longer stand the sight of him. Instead, Kervos silently took the drunken beatings his father would bestow before the man passed out for the evening.

Four years and as many beatings later, Kervos came home to find his sisters in tears and their father packing up their belongings. Amidst the sobbing, Elze informed Kervos that their father had decided they were leaving - work had dried up, and they would be moving to another logging village where he had heard work was available, Falcon's Hollow. Knowing that the reason work had dried up was because the man could no longer remain sober even on the job, Kervos asked Elze why she was so saddened by the news.

"Because," she replied between attempts to catch her breath, "Father said you're not coming with us."

Kervos shared a single, long look with the man he had once called Father. After he could no longer witness the hate in the man's eyes, he smiled and assured his sisters that the reason he would not be coming with was because he had found work elsewhere. They would be fine, and he would keep in touch with them as much as possible. In time he managed to assuage Livia and Elze's fears, and they took his promise as bond. As the only people that still cared for him departed for Falcon's Hollow, Kervos swore it was the last kindness he would ever afford his father, convinced as he was that it was necessary for the well-being of his sisters.

Over the next few years Kervos kept his promise: though he traveled, performing odd jobs in one village or town until work dried up or he felt people didn't desire to be around a half-orc any longer, he stayed in touch with his sisters. While not well off by any means, his mother had insisted all three learn to read and write form an early age. Kervos remained convinced that the only reason his sisters even received his letters were that his father could not read and needed Livia to handle such matters for him. Secrecy of their contact aside, he continued to keep his word.

Throughout his travels, Kervos sought some sort of permanent work but took on any job he could find. In some places he would help farmers, in others he would work as a bouncer in rowdy taverns - if the work paid, it was better than stealing or scrounging to get by. It wasn't until he came across work helping an academic, Sajeli Aryage, that his life began to take on a path of meaning. Sajeli was in need of protection and assistance during her travels, and since it paid as well as anything else he could find, Kervos agreed to take on the job. In exchange for his services, Sajeli paid him in more than just coin - she passed along knowledge that he was more than eager to absorb. It started with small things: certain knowledge about how to survive easily outside of town, how to help soften one's features to make traveling between communities easier, and how to more effectively communicate with others beyond using the force of one's personality. Eventually it grew beyond those simpler teachings to details of religions, which he had never stopped to consider before. Kervos had always been aware that deities existed, but had never given it much thought beyond that.

It wasn't long until Sajeli was informing Kervos more specifically about Milani, Sajeli's own patron. The concepts of hope and standing against oppression appealed to Kervos immediately, and he absorbed everything Sajeli taught him during their travels. As they continued both traveling and Sajeli's teaching, he learned that she was more than just an academic; she was an intelligent woman who sought to bring her ideals to others. Sajeli's intent was to make her way into Taldor and invigorate the Unbeareded there; her hope was that she could convince them to rise up and free themselves from the oppressiveness of the Taldan nobles. By this point enamored both with Sajeli and what Milani represented, Kervos agreed to assist her in her goal. The pair made their way into Taldor and worked together for many months trying to spread Milani's word and hope. In that time Kervos found himself more confident, more able to blend in with the race that he had felt abandoned by for so long, and even to call on Milani's favor in a way that made him a conduit for something more.

It was a shock, then, when they were caught by a local governor, turned in by some of those they meant to save. It was only by what he deemed sheer luck and Milani's grace that he was able to escape, fleeing for his life at Sajeli's urging before she was cut down by a local guard. Kervos made his way, angry and alone, back across the border into a safe location they had reserved for themselves in Andoran. While taking time to tend to his own wounds and pray for the salvation of his mentor who had lost her life in the service to the ideals of their goddess, Kervos intended to send a final word to his sisters before heading back to his work in Taldor. He was further surprised to already find word waiting for him from Livia.

Their father was dead, she had written him. Illness had overcome him, and she was worried that Elze may have contracted the same while caring for him. She asked for Kervos to please come and help, whether it be to take them with him to wherever he may be going next, or to help them with cleaning up and resolving their father's affairs. Most of all, though, Livia said they needed to see him again after all the years that had passed. Feeling a familiar protectiveness overtake him, Kervos knew that Taldor would have to wait momentarily. He would set out for Falcon's Hollow immediately, instead.
