I'd just like to give a heads up to everybody that I'm going to be pretty swamped until Christmas, so I wouldn't expect any lengthy posts from me until then.

Victoria Whitesmith |
Dear Everyone,
I am posting this to all of my games. I'm sorry for my lack of communication. Life has been dumping on me.
My work load is still overwhelmingly heavy, and we had a major medical scare in my family. My son had a relatively simple case of strep throat, and we learned the hard way that he is allergic to penicillin. Very allergic. We've been dealing with medical issues for over a week now.
I will be going on inactive status for a short while. I need to get things in order and I barely have time in my daily schedule to eat dinner with my family let alone do any gaming. Between too much work, finishing my dissertation, and my son's health, I have too much on my plate.
If you feel the need to replace my character, I understand. I will reach out to you when things settle down to see if there is still an opening. Probably in a few weeks.
Thank you for all the fun! I hope this passes soon.

I guess we're already on holiday posting time... I've been super busy today but I'll get something up (bottling Avaria) so that those who wish to will be able to post for their blessing tomorrow. Hopefully by Saturday we'll be able to have things back on track.
Also, once you're back in Sandpoint after this quest Victoria will be departing. I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on replacing her versus dropping to a four person party.
Graverattler |
Vagabond's character submission Alex Cloven seems interesting and could fill in the arcane gap.
Graverattler |
Justinius has the Blind Fight Feat, part of which says "You do not need to make Acrobatics skill checks to move at full speed while blinded."; I don't think he moves slower because of lack of visibility.
In fact, except for under blindness, I don't see anything that says you move at half speed due to visibility issues. Perhaps you can point me to some rule I've overlooked all these years; I don't claim to have anywhere near perfect rules knowledge.
nate lange RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 |
I can't link directly to it but if you look up Movement, check the section on tactical movement, and look for the heading "hampered movement" you'll find that you pay double for movement in poor visibility. This is separate from and (whether or not RAI, by RAW) stacks with the halved movement from blindness. So, normally the blind move at 1/4 speed all the time. Blind fighting lets him overcome blindness effects but doesn't do anything for the poor visibility penalty.
Justinius Redarm |
seems like if they didnt mean you could move at full speed while blinded, they would not have said 'you do not need to make acrobatics checks to move at full speed while blinded'.

Yeah, like if you were in difficult terrain, it would cost you 10' for every move, and you could only move at half speed if blind.
One could make an argument that "obscured vision" and "blinded" shouldn't stack, given a creature without vision cannot have said vision obscured. It seems counter-intuitive that fog should slow down a person who can't see the fog in the first place.
I wonder how it interacts with blindsight, since it only says you may maneuver as well as a person with sight. (Blindsense specifically calls out that "Visibility still affects the movement of a creature with blindsense.")
This (and attack issues) is why all my high level characters usually have fog-cutting lenses.

Blinded specifically says they have to make a DC 10 Acrobatics check to move faster than half speed.
Blind-Fight specifically says:
"You do not need to make Acrobatics skill checks to move at full speed while blinded."
Between the three rules, I think the most reasonable interpretation is that when your vision is impaired (including when you're blinded), your movement is halved, unless you make a DC10 Acrobatics check or have the blind-fight feat.
It is too bad that the chart/rules for tactical movement do not spell this out more clearly.
nate lange RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 |
Impaired visibility doesn't reduce your move speed, it makes your move cost more, and (aside from having a trick to see normally) there is no way to reduce that extra cost that I can think of off the top of my head. If there was an acrobatics check to avoid that extra cost they would have mentioned it somewhere (anywhere).
Blindness, on the other hand, does limit your movement: to half your normal speed unless you make the acrobatics check. Additionally, if you're blind your visibility is obviously impaired. So, if you have 30' move and are blind you have to succeed at the acrobatics check to use all 30' but those 30' only actually allow you to move 15'. Without the acrobatics check you're limited to 15' of movement which will only let you get 5' (all of which is why being blind sucks). There's a chance that this is not RAI but it seems pretty clearly to be RAW.
All of this is kind of a tangent right now though because your visibility is poor but you are not blinded.

Sorry for the sudden disappearance, everyone! I went out of town to my aunt's for the holidays expecting her to have wifi, but apparently after the flood she went wired only (didn't want to replace the router I guess?). Anyways, I'm back now, so I'll get caught up.
Again, sorry for the no notice AWOL status.
Merry belated Christmas!

Hey All,
Our posting rate is way down. I know the holidays are a busy time but as we finish that I'd really like to get back to regular posting. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help with that. Also, I'm guessing some of you might be frustrated with this caster, feel free to use the discussion thread to talk to each other about options, or to ask me if/how possible solutions might work.
Rimy Jim |
It might be useful if someone could cast a targeted dispel magic on the fog effect; that seems permissable under the spell desciption of guards & wards.
nate lange RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 |
Guards and Wards does, in fact, allow for targeted dispels to take out individual effects. By extension, a targeted greater dispel could take out one effect per 4 levels (or whatever the progression normally is), or the area version could be used to negate all effects in a 20' radius. If you find the likely place where it was originally cast (or just get lucky), an area greater dispel that includes the point of origin for the spell can knock out the whole spell.

I'm not sure what happened to Graverattler/Reckless... She had a couple discussion posts on Saturday but hasn't posted in Gameplay since Friday... I'm waiting to hear back from Avaria since my clarification and then if we haven't heard from Graverattler I'll bot her for this round so we can start moving again.
Justinius Redarm |
do I figure out that the passage loops? or do I run laps for a bit while they all sit down for brunch and place bets on how fast I can go?

Graverattler - Awesome job on that dispel!

Hey all, I was just going through some bookkeeping and realized that I never posted the Christmas boon! Justinius, Graverattler, and Rimy Jim all recieve...

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Thanks. And I agree, that boon is awesomesauce!
Now to send 1,000 screeching monkeys to fling their poo at the great and powerful Uz behind his wooden curtain.

I hope you start this week!

I was hoping that when Avaria said she'd post after her first day she meant she was on her way to her first day and would post after... I don't want to be impatient but we've been waiting on her for a little bit so I'm going to give her until morning my time (6-8 hours from now) and then if she hasn't posted I'll bot her for a round so we can keep moving.
nate lange RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 |
You can use it after... If we were around a table I'd probably make it you declare it first but in a PbP that's not practical because it would necessitate everyone making twice as many combat posts (one to declare actions and one to roll). Just make sure you post quickly if you want to modify something (or even beforehand if there's something you think you might want to change: eg 'if he fails that save I'll use my blessing'), if a bunch of people have posted based on a failure already we're not going to back up and undo all that.
Avaria |
So, I've just started a new job this week and though I figured I'd find a way to balance it with free time, I simply haven't. I work 10 hour shifts and run a commute that's over an hour each way. Basically I have no time for anything during my weekdays for the next 3-6 months.
Of course, that means daily posting to campaigns is just extra I can't manage right now when I hardly have time to make dinner before I'm back to getting ready for bed. So rather than lag the entire campaign with my dead weight, I'll just dip out now before it gets worse.
I'm really sorry about this, I certainly hadn't anticipated a 10 hour day job when I started picking up campaigns on the forums, but I guess that's just the way my particular cookie crumbled this new year.
nate lange RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 |
Thank you for letting us know what was going on Avaria. I hope the job works out well for you.
We should be able to wrap this little arc up relatively quickly and then when we get back to Sandpoint we can easily drop off Avaria and Victoria.
Now that we're dropping to 3 we'll definitely need to pick up at least one more. With the right arcane caster we might be able to get away just one...
Would the 3 of you prefer to look for 2 more or try it with a 4 person party? Were there any arcane casters in the recruitment that really stood out to anyone that I could maybe see if are still interested? Or I know some people on the boards who are reliable posters that I could see if are interested in making a mythic/gestalt arcane caster to join us? Or you could PM me if you know someone who might want to give it a shot, and would be reliable and a good fit.
Rimy Jim |
Sorry to lose you, Avaria; good luck in the new job!
I'll look through the recruitment thread this evening and refresh my memory on other applicants; in the meantime, what's this witchy guy doing?
nate lange RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 |
Hey everyone,
I have a friend who's building a slayer/magus archer right now. He'll step in to fill the ranged damage roll (along with secondary arcane casting and skill support). He'll probably be checking in here at some point in the near future and should have his character ready by the time you get back to Sandpoint. We'll still be looking at one to do about a 9 level arcane caster.
