Hmm, with all the intra-house conflict, it wouldn't surprise me if at least one person in this room was loyal to the Aurum.
He scanned the crowd for anyone suspicious.

"That was quite a short speech," someone commented.
Your EM-Cee comes up and says, "Thank you, Ebran. Well, with our newest member of our house, you will get a ship of your own. However, certain parties of this Government pressured me not to give you a galleon, so you will get a sloop."
Danir |
Danir strolls through the ballroom, listening to the speeches and watching those around him, thinking about how weird it felt to be back at a house gala, even if not his own house...
Perception roll to see if he sees anything dangerous/shady

Remembering their briefing, Danir also searches for Baron Thalissas d'Lyrandar amongst the crowd and seeks to get near him, to see first if he can overhear anything of value.

(sorry Danir, to make you wait again).
Suddenly there was an explosion that rocked the room. Everyone is startled to see a beam of energy rise high into the sky. Only conclusion: someone is using the astrolabe. But why?
Oh, you have 1.5 seconds before panicked Khoravar start running for the exits.
Othan |
Othan's mind blade is drawn before most people even have time to panic. He begins heading in the direction of the energy beam.
In a deep angry voice Othan yells, "Out of my way" and shoves people who don't move fast enough away.

While his elven blood may have been thin, it came through when it counted. As the first groan of the impending explosion began, Ebran turned, senses on edge, setting his plate down on the buffet table. As the wall and ceiling gave way to the beam of light, Ebran already had one foot in front of the other on the way over there.
Chakram in hand, Ebran leaped from table to table over the heads of the stampeding crowd that filled the aisles.
escape artist: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 to make his way through the entangling crowd. add 4 to that if you think Acrobatics would be more fitting.

Burning Hands 5d4
She shields her hands even as Othan attacks her! (both are hits) you burn her face, and Othan blades connect! But flipping and landing in front of her is the -- Khoravar Patriarch of the Sharn enclave? He manifests two mindblades.
"Defend me!" she says.
"As you wish."
Thrask the "Wandslinger" |
Thrask takes a small step (five foot step) and concentrates briefly on Othan...
Get out of the way, I can finish this...
He then withdraws thirty feet and calmly takes one bead from his small necklace...
Forgot my UMD check with the wand rolling it now, count it as having fizzled last round if the check fails...

Oh it's good alright, using my 5d6 fireball bead GM, save dc 14

Ebran snags one of his chakram (not the new expensive one, in case this doesnt work) and throws it at the vortex. While one would consider this a miss, Ebran's goal was not to hit the woman, but to perform a trick shot.
chakram circumvents woman, hooks astrolabe, returns it to Ebran's hand
(and wouldn't it be so cool if it pulls the astrolabe to him as the fireball goes off in the background?)

Trick shot -- hmm . . . .
The ball of fire blows up as the chakram takes the astrolabe away from the pedestal. The Inspired took the full brunt of it, and is now becoming a burning husk. her defender jumped out of the way, but his clothes are on fire and he's taking second degree burns.
You hear a hollow: "You may have slain this vessel, but I'll be back; I'll be back!"
Ebran Asur |
"Or at least, try not to kill him!" Ebran says, charging his crystal chakram and throwing it.
nonlethal, thrown attack: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 10 - 4 = 10

spending 2 PP to invest, and 1 for trick shot to make it return when it misses.

I believe gentlemen I need to drop a name for you, the man who handed the sack to the dark haired crazy was Cassadar, an innkeeper on the skyway. I was tracking her, I believed that the sack contained the payment for the assassination... Feel like some good old fashioned rough rousing interrogation?
Ebran Asur |
so, we have the astrolabe, bad guy temporarily defeated, patriarch knocked out and hopefully saved from mental influence, and a name of someone who (according to our crazy compatriot) paid the temporarily-defeated-enemy to kill (someone, probably the folk from earlier)?
"How did this Cassadar get the astrolabe?"
Thrask the "Wandslinger" |
Unknown, I only arrived in time to witness the transaction... It is likely a lost cause but Cassadar may not have fled, we should check the Skyway top to bottom. As for your "patriarch" I am willing to wager that the "real" patriarch was replaced a long time ago... You can mind control a target sure but teach him how to manifest mindblades?

[dice=Knowledge (The Planes)]1d20+5You know as much as anyone else with the results of a 21. The Inspired come from Reidra. And from research in Aundair, you learn that Dal Quor is linked to a lost 13th moon. This was one attempt to bring the lost 13th moon back into orbit.
