Thank you :D

Thinking I'll take another level of Alchemist. What do people think?

About bloody time! Oh, wonderful, thank you oh wise and overpowerful GM!

Squeak - sounds good to me - whatever makes Squeak more fun to play.

I'll take another level of unchained rogue. Level up almost complete, just picking a feat, too tired to think....

Yay! More Warpriest for me, though now that Rokko is here I can mix in some more Fighter levels to boost the melee combat potential in the future.

A couple of CLWs for Bronwyn; gotta keep the boss healthy and I guess we won't be fighting for a little bit so no need to save spells for later ;^)

Secure in the chariot, Palisade spent a moment marvelling at its invisible body; this was a wholly new experience to it, and slightly disconcerting, made even worse when Bastion decided to peer out from underneath Palisade's armor. The sight of an apparently detached but still very much mobile clockwork rodent's head floating in midair was interesting to say the least. Bastion seemed to bask in the attention, twitching his whiskers proudly as he considered the insides of the chariot and once again found them satisfactory.

Action 1

Rokko laughed hysterically for a minute or so as the land cart sped away before getting a grip on himself. He was mildly surprised to still be alive. He'd shot at a vampire and fled a zombie army and lived to tell the tale. Clearly the Flame was protecting him that night, and he murmured a prayer of thanks.

Swift Alchemy

Still thinking about Feat. I want to get one of the warforged ones, or a crafting feat. I'm keen to move him away from humanity. Given I can get the promethean discovery at 6, I think I'm looking at Improved Damage Reduction again, layering on some of the additional adamantine he salvaged from that other 'Forged we killed. I am also interested in Improved Resiliency.

Action 1

"Thank you so much!" Vi said to Failin, forgetting that she was in her natural form, and that he hadn't seen it. "If you hadn't come for us, I don't think we would have made it. I am glad to see the end of that place!"

Action 2

Vi shook her head. "Not sure who was chasing us. Looked like Blood of Vol guys. We had hoped to sneak out, unseen, and we almost made it too. Fortunately, we got what we were looking for."

Now that they were out of danger, Vi took her ioun torch from its sack and threw it into orbit around her head. Taking out her notebook, she studied the map she'd drawn. Pointing to the mark in what had been Cyre, she said, "We need to go here before going back to Darguun. Can you take us? If not all the way in, that at least as close as you can? It shouldn't take us long to fetch what we need, and we may be coming out at a run. If you'll wait for us, we'll make it worth your while."

Funny you should say that. I quite like the idea of Forged as Tanks.

I was really considering Fighter (Unbreakable) as an option. I love the flavour, means I can tank up Squeak, and Endurance just makes so much sense for a Forged.
What do you think?

Glad I finally thought to check the discussion page - I was wondering why nobody was posting. I'll check the other games next.

I'll leave the knowledge rolls to Bronwyn, Vi's got not much going on there.

Action 1

Vi shook her head. "Probably not. Though technically it's not our trouble - it's her ladyship's. We're just the hired help. Hopefully once this is done, we can pass the trouble back to her and go back to Sharn."

knowledge arcana: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
knowledge nature: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
knowledge religion: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

Action 2
Vi felt goosebumps rise on her skin at Failin's words. She didn't know much about the Mournland at all, just rumours and conjecture. She's always assumed that most of what she'd heard was exaggeration. She'd heard that things didn't heal or rot there, but hadn't been sure it was true.

"No, I'm not sure," she said, honestly. "I mean, I know what we're doing is important, but not worth dying for. At least where we're going isn't very deep in. I'm really hoping we can go in, get it, get out, in less than a day."

Pointing to the spot on the map, she said, "Is it possible for you to take us here? How long do you think it would take?"

Pointing to the spot on the map, she said, "Is it possible for you to take us here? How long do you think it would take?"

Failin sighed, "Let me see that map."

He nodded a few times, "It looks like it's not too far inside the grey mist; I'd say about 30 miles east of Olkhaan but remember that one can get disoriented when traveling in the Mournland so I'll need your assistance to help me steer and tell me which way is east."

He asked, "Do any of you have survival skills? Otherwise, we might run around in circles."

Action 1:

Bronwyn actually giggled at Failin's question, "I'd love to give you an answer but I'm pretty sure we don't even know what sort of trouble we've gotten into. But that's what keeps things interesting, no?"

Action 2:

Once again Bronwyn's head knowledge failed to translate into any common sense. "Of course I know about the Mournland. The Day of Mourning had many fascinating magical repercussions. Some spells developed a measure of sentience, almost like they're alive which would be totally awesome to see. I mean, could you imagine? Oh, and it also twisted some of the natural inhabitants of the land into who knows what kind of scariness." She paused, "So that's it for magic. Then there's the grey mists which, like Failin said, plays with people's sense of direction making it easy to get disoriented. And then there's the most fascinating thing, and probably the most challenging as well, if it wasn't challenging enough - healing doesn't work at all in the Mournland. Either natural healing or magical healing. It's like entropy ceases to exist, there isn't any decay, and the land wants to keep you as you are - even if that means you stay hurt until you're dead. Although at least you wouldn't decompose at that point."

The wizard leaned forward, "These are the things that epic ballads are written about. Insurmountable challenges which somehow the heroes of the story are able to conquer. How many people can say that they've been to the Mournland and lived to tell the tale?"

When Failin asks about survival, Bronwyn gives an unladylike snort, "Sorry but as I'm sure you've surmised, I can't help you there." She points at Squeak and Palisade, "They're my survival skill." Then she gets a thoughtful look on her face. "Although we could stop every so often and mark our path somehow so that we can find our way back. Maybe charred shrubbery?"

CHAR US A SHRUBBERY!

Male Warforged Artificer (Alchemist) 5. AC 21. HP 43/43. HD 5/5, 1st 4/4. 2nd 2/2.

Action 1
Squeak stood quietly in the exact middle of the landcart, careful not to upset it. As they drove he removed the now shattered disguise, obviously favouring his left arm.

Action 2
"That is fascinating." agreed Squeak "A certain degree of self-repair is required by the human body to maintain function. I would be interested to see how that interacts with the healing effect. It is possible that outer skin layers would abrade and flake off, without new skin layers being grown to replace them." Squeak not-so-subtly tried to dissuade Bronwyn from their mission.
Squeak is trained in survival
"In our lines, Palisade and I were given basic survival training; how to find true north, how to avoid soft ground, how to forage for lubricants, that sort of thing. With the proper equipment I should be able to keep us from getting lost."

At some point
Squeak broke in. "With permission, there are certain repairs I will need to perform. I believe my left elbow joint dislocated. I am also sensing damage in my right leg, spine, and torso. My left eye appears to be impaired, and failures are accelerating." His left eye winked out "Failures have reached catastrophic."
Squeak reached into his well-packed kit. "I took the liberty of taking spares from our last Warforged opponent. I would like to ask Palisade to help me effect repairs while we wait."

Bronwyn wrote:

Palisade sat up straighter after hearing the vote of confidence from Lady d’Deneith. ”This one assures you, unit Squeak and itself with work to ensure your continued survival, at their cost of our own continued existence if necessary.” The tall ‘forged’s single eyed gaze shifted to include Rokko, Vi and their driver. ”This one is certain the other members of the squad agree.”

”Pleased to offer assistance,” Palisade said, checking its backpack to ensure its blacksmith’s kit had survived the hectic escape and the previous battle unharmed.

Palisade’s got some Survival ranks as well, and Profession: Soldier could perhaps be used for some specific things along the way.

Failin agreed, "Ok, we'll go but don't expect me to fight. I will wait for you to get done similar to what we did before."

Can I have a Dex Mutagen this time, please, and the following; Heightened Awareness, Firebelly, Expeditious Retreat and Shield.
Earlier
Squeak called Bronwyn's attention to his torso. The covering plate was removed, and the mess of moving actuators and strange alchemical reservoirs was revealed. "Bronwyn! See this..." here he tapped a hand around a rune-encrusted pancreas-sized cast-iron sphere, attached to a network of fine, flexible wires. "I have been thinking about how I stand between you and danger, and how that inconveniences you when using your fire attacks. This is a boiler. I've attached fine tubes to my external plates. When I'm hit with fire, the plates heat up, and the wires conduct the heat to the boiler. The fluid in the boiler is designed to quickly absorb heat, boiling. The steam can then be vented from this port in my chest." Squeak shrugged apologetically "Not perfect - I'd need longer wires. And the fluid is volatile, so it'd only last a few minutes before evaporating anyway. I'll need to fill it up before combat, but you should be able to stop worrying about damaging me."

Squeak looked down as he reattached the - scavenged - adamantine plate "I know you're pretty resistant to the fire in my bombs. I'm always worried though. Just how resistant do you think you are?"

"I'm afraid there's no breakfast this morning" Squeak apologised. "I've been busy reassembling myself." In truth the 'Forged had spent a little too long thinking about what an area deprived of entropy might do to an organic digestive process. The answer was disturbingly messy.

Action 1

"I don't like this." Squeak complained. "Poor visibility. Dangerous creatures. This place is an ambush waiting to happen. I think we should attach ourselves together with ropes. All too easy for one of the bigger predators to just snatch someone and run off into the mists." His sidelong glance at Bronwyn made it all too easy to guess who the massive 'Forged was worried about.

"Are we lost?" Squeak asked his fellow 'Forged in a rumbling whisper. "I thought you had a compass installed?"

I think Bronwyn is leveled up. Whether it's properly done, that's another story :)

About DR/5 worth :)

Bronwyn listened intently as Squeak explained his tweaks. "That's absolutely brilliant, Squeak! It does give me piece of mind to know that my fire won't hurt you because of your alterations. As for my own resistance, I could probably withstand one of my firejets but would probably take damage from my burning hands - assuming I don't move out of the way, that is."

Action 1:

As Bronwyn leaned out of the chariot yet again to yell at Squeak and Palisade, she inquired, "Are you guys glitching? Why aren't you keeping true?"

Action 2:

After what seemed like an eternity, Bronwyn collapsed into her seat and practically wailed, "This is hopeless and all is lost, we are hopelessly lost. I didn't sign up for this, sitting in a glorified wagon for hours on end with nothing to do. I am too young and too pretty to be lost in the Mournland until I am nothing but a good looking corpse." Then she started to cry, her shoulders moving in small sobs. "I want to go back. There is fun to be had in Sharn and this isn't fun. I don't know what I was thinking. I should never have left."

”Correction. This one is experiencing technical difficulties. Lack of visibility and unexpected topographical features make orienteering challenging,” Palisade replied, staring futilely into the all-consuming mists. ”Suggestion. Reverse course so current location can be pinpointed outside the fox bank and make another attempt. Perhaps by locking the controls of the chariot this time to make it unable to divert from chosen heading, and taking special care and taking measurements when navigating around obstacles that cannot be driven over.”

Actually, this sounds good on multiple levels, even if Palisade hadn’t failed the save!

Palisade had been driven to questioning the wisdom of their course as they struggled to find their heading in the pervasive mists, and eagerly chimed in when Bronwyn said aloud what it had been thinking of. ”Agreed. We are under no obligation to risk the wrath of House Cannith by pursuing their secrets. This one would suggest we leave the matters of the House to its own members and return to a safer setting.”

Oh sure, make it so you're all counting on Vi. She would have failed her will roll on purpose - she doesn't want to be here at all. Fine, okay, I'll do what I can.

Vi couldn't believe what she was hearing. Astounded she said, "Auron's Word, are you serious? After all this, all that we've been through, NOW you want to turn around? We faced an undead Karrnathi soldier on the lightning rail, and killed it! We made it through the Bloody Market, we fought bugbears! And we got all the way out here, and found the map, and we escaped a khyber-loving vampire! And now you're put off by some hostforsaken fog?"

Grabbing Bronwyn's shoulders, she gave her a slight shake and said, "What happened to the adventure loving girl who kicked my ass at Tower Tag? The flame-loving wizard who nearly burned Sharn down defending our boss?" Turning to Palisade and Squeak, she continued, "And you, don't even get me started on you two. You have never hesitated, never faltered, all through this crazy scene. We are fighting to make the world safer from your crazy, blade-riddled kinsfolk."

Throwing her arms in the air, she let out a sound of pure frustration. "Dolurrh! Don't make me take the side of Traveler. You know things are crabbed when a tower-born gummer has to talk sense into a 'Marked wizard and her two 'Forged bodyguards. Now, pull yourselves together, and let's move on!"

"It's the mist," said Rokko, his tone firm and resolute. "It's affecting how we feel. We are entering a land of death and despair, and the mist is its avatar. But we have truth and justice on our side, and we need not feel hopeless. We are soldiers, and if we desert our post then evil prevails. I, for one, will not let that happen. We will press on, do what we need to do, and leave this accursed place when we have completed our task."

Don't know if that pep talk was enough, but in case we are persuaded...

Bronwyn wrote:
"I guess we've come this far. It'd be foolish to turn around now. And the sooner we finish here, the sooner I can get back to normal."

The logic was sound, although Palisade refrained from pointing out there were many sacrifices they might still be asked to make, many prices for them to pay. But if Lady d'Deneith wanted to keep going, the 'forged knew its place was here to try to see her safe, despite the odds. It also admitted there might be a point to the goblin priest's claim that it was the ambient aura that was affecting their decisions. Now that they were back outside the mists the bleakness it had experienced seemed... remote, to a degree.

Given a chance to stop and consider the matter at length, Palisade began to accept the role of an outside influence more and more; after all, it had never been prone to flights of emotion, one way or another, even in the heat of battle. Thus, the crushing despair it had experienced became even more suspect under the light of logic and reason. Although... the sheer power of the emotion, and now its absence... for some strange reason, Palisade felt a touch of something that might have been a sense of loss.

Shaking its head to banish the fruitless path of thought, it dug into their provisions for a length of rope and began tying one end of it over its own wrist.

"Analysis. Poor visibility and unexpected terrain were the main causes for this one's failure at orienteering. Thus, the logical next step is to err on the side of caution. This one possessed a compass to ensure it knows the direction it is facing. But it is easy to wander aside when moving along almost blindly, and a few steps to one's side every few yard traveled will add up over distance."

"Suggestion. This one and one of you will be connected by a rope, as long as prevailing visibility allows. This one will take a heading and instruct the other person to walk on that heading to the limit of this one's vision. This one will offer corrections if the other one's path varies from the absolute direction. The rope will help in this, becoming an extension to the compass's needle. Once the limit of the visibility has been reached, this one will walk up to the other person, take a new heading and the process will be repeated. While this is going on, someone else will be counting steps. This one suggests that will be unit Squeak, using this one's steps as a measure, as it had been schooled to marching with precise length of stride."

"Thus we should be able to ensure our correct heading and make a very reasonable estimate of distance covered. Caution. If weather conditions do not improve, it will still be possible we shall miss our mark, as we will still be operating according to the information in the naturally limited maps we have been able to study. But if we have advanced 120% of the distance we have estimated would be sufficient to reach our goal, we can switch to moving in a spiral search pattern to locate our objective."

"Further notification. This method, while decreasing chances of mistakes of navigation will greatly slow our process. But this one believes it to be the most effective method, until we penetrate the mists and enter a region of better visibility."

Vi kept silent in the landcart during the trip through the mists. Her outburst had mentally exhausted her. The truth was that she desperately wanted to go back to Sharn. But she had a feeling that she'd just be bringing trouble behind her if they didn't finish this mission.

As they came through the mists, her mind wasn't changed at all. The landscape was terrible, nightmarish. Her voice small, she said, "What happened here?"

perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Vi was both horrified and fascinated by the scene of battle. "Why would somebody do this? Why make it so bodies say fresh?" She looked at Bronwyn, as if expecting the 'Marked mage to have an answer.

Bronwyn took in the almost perfectly preserved scene before her. "See? No decay. I guess that if you have to die, this would be the place to do it. Your flesh would never disappear and insects would never make their home in you. The downside is that you'd have to stay in the Mournland forever."

The wizard's brow wrinkles in thought at Vi's question. "I don't think anyone is making the bodies fresh. I think it's just an unfortunate side-effect of whatever happened when the Mournland was created."

Might as well, it's not like Palisade's gonna make a DC20 check by itself. Anyway, roll now, post later.

Squeak refrained from shaking his head in admiration. It was all too easy to forget Palisade was a veteran, but it when he overcame obstacles like this that his superior experience really showed.

Also, brilliant OOC as well!

No, but you will another much easier check if you find an IC reason to investigate further. :)

Squeak concentrated on keeping his strides even. Palisade had trusted him with keeping the same stride, never varying. Desperately he imagined his old training line marching alongside him, steps in rhythm. 'All gone now, though. All gone except Palisade. The ones who survived the war didn't survive the peace. Without purpose, they were lost. I'm lucky I was one of the ones who had a purpose, afterwards.' "Are you feeling alright, ma'am?" Squeak asked Bronwyn formally, apparently out of nowhere. "Anything you need?"

Action 1
Would it be reasonable for Squeak - with or without Palisade - to have fought in this area in better days?

Action 2
Squeak strode forward briskly, reaching down to lift a soldier's arm "Time to re-equip." he declared, matter of factly. "Palisade, do we have time to burn the bodies, or at least dismember and bury them? Is anyone looking for anything in particular?"
Are there signs of scavengers, or warforged nearby?
perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Good catch. 7 bombs, DC 14

Thank ye, unit Squeak ;^) An elaborate way to beg for a bonus to the roll.

Action 1

For Palisade, sighting of the preserved battlefield felt like a return to home. War was what it had been made for, literally, and war was what it had waged, for the vast majority of its short existence. During the Last War, everything had been simple. There was the enemy, to be fought at every opportune moment. There were the allies, to be protected and watched for because the countless shifting alliances during the century-long confrontation had made betrayal merely a matter of time. And there had been the members of its own squad, the few individuals worthy of unwavering loyalty.

There had also been its Goddess-Creator, until that fateful day death had claimed her earthly form. Freeing her, Palisade had no doubt, to migrate to a higher form of existence. After all, it had the power of its belief to act as constant proof of her favor.

When the war had ended, Palisade had felt lost. Who now remained to point it to the enemy? It thanked the Goddess-Creator that its last commander had seen fit to grant it one last mission, one that would grant it purpose for as long as it and unit Squeak remained successful. The 'forged cast a glance towards Lady d'Deneith, wondering it the human female truly understood her importance to the soldier who had outlasted its war.

Vi wrote:

Palisade considered the question for a moment, but could offer no insights worth the breath to utter them. The mystery of the Mourning was something it had no clues to, and to be frank, little interest in solving. Whatever it had been had happened, and it had showed no sign of happening again. Thus, it saw no reason to mull over it.

Action 2

Palisade stopped and knelt next to a body of a soldier, extending one finger to touch the woman's belly wound, rubbing the still-fresh blood between its fingers.

"Observation. It is as if time had stopped to the dead," the 'forged stated, then quickly and efficiently went through the soldier's kit and picked up a very serviceable knife from her belt and added it to its own collection. "Bleak suggestion. If the residual magic of this place can keep the bodies fresh, this one wonders what it has done to the spirits of the slain? Perhaps they, too, have been bound here, unable to move beyond."

Palisade is certainly interested in looting the dead, particularly if the weak fleshbags want to stop for a breather here. You can never have too many weapons, after all, and these folks aren't going to need theirs any longer. Besides, it would be interesting to figure out who had been fighting whom.

You know me by now. If it makes for a better story or RPing then I will never turn down an offer from a player that wants to flesh out the world and/or his PC.

Go for it. :)

My, what a burst of posts in a few minutes ;^)

"Doubtful answer. The smoke from burning bodies could be seen from miles away and might draw unwanted attention to us. This one would advice against it. Burying would consume a lot of time. Were we to decide to set up camp for the night here, the two of us could perhaps manage both the burial arrangements and watch rotation during the rest period. Query. But what purpose would that serve?" the single-eyed 'forged cocked its head to a side as it considered its old companion.

Honestly, it felt like unit Squeak was becoming more and more... human... by the month. It understood the dignity of a proper burial, but it also considered the bodies mere sacks of meat. If there was no decay here, nor any carrion eaters to prey on the flesh, the state of the bodies would not alter whether they were left exposed to the elements or not. What difference would a few feet of dirt piled on top of them make?

"Suggestion. If the bodies have survived in such a good condition, this one suspects their gear is in equally good repair, untouched by the years of exposure. If we are stopping here for a time, we should scavenge for equipment. Fond memory. Unit Squeak, do you remember former companion Corporal Piper's many tales of "living off the land" in enemy territory, as he preferred to put it?"

"Corporal Piper? I do. His multiple uses for a scavenged pair of pants was simply genius. I'm not sure why the other human officers would laugh at him though."

"Regarding these." Squeak poked a body with a foot "Given who we face, I thought it better to use the standard battlefield precautions against reanimation. 'Every corpse destroyed is a Karnathi you don't have to fight'."

Bronwyn sat up a little straighter and asked indignantly, "Ma'am? I'm not near old enough to be a ma'am! How awful do I look right now to warrant being called ma'am? Wait, don't answer that. Then she continued almost mournfully, What I need is a bath and a hot meal and a warm bed and that glorious dress that I purchased in Sharn which I never got to wear...but that's not going to happen anytime soon so let's just say that I'm fine."

Action 2:

As Palisade and Squeak discussed the bodies, Bronwyn moved closer. "I agree with Palisade that burning them would draw attention - and there's no guarantee that they would turn to ash if they don't decompose - and burying them would be a waste of energy. Although Squeak has a point about reanimation. Logically, it would make the most sense to leave them here but decapitate the bodies. They won't be much use to animate if they can't see where they're going." As the wizard got closer, something on the body of the soldier that Palisade was manhandling caught her eye.

Does that count for getting her another perception roll? And everyone else if she points it out?
