"Just put him down, son. Nice and slow."

He then looked at Arleth, "OK, you were just defending yourselves. Do you have any witnesses that can corroborate what you just said?"

Arleth looked around at the folks coming out, despite the rain. "I was a bit busy to be looking around for witnesses. I didn't notice anybody, but maybe some of these folk saw something."

Arleth reached into her satchel, making sure to pull out the right papers. She generally carried a few sets with her, no matter what Face she was wearing, but she could identify them all by touch. Her forger was excellent, and she had no doubts that the papers would pass inspection.

Handing them to the dwarf, she said, "Arleth Fadi. I'm working as a guide for Tanis Tourism. This is my client, Bronwyn d'Deneith, and her 'forged." Arleth put just a bit of emphasis on Bronwyn's last name.

Bronwyn dug for her own papers. As she held them out she readjusted her wet ponytail to remove the hair stuck to her neck, drawing attention to her dragonmark in the process. "Will this take long? We were on our way to eat before being attacked by that crazy warforged."

Action 1:

Bronwyn smiled brightly at the dwarf. "Thank you Sergeant Dolom. It is nice to know that Sharn is protected by officers such as yourself."

After the crowds had dispersed, Bronwyn couldn't help but notice that Palisade was hurt. "Do we need to find you help, Palisades? Maybe that oil the crazy warforged was carrying can help patch you up. Where did it get to anyways?"

Action 2:

Bronwyn clapped her hands in delight after the figure disappeared. "Oooh this sounds like an adventure. It's almost like we're in some kind of elaborate real-life play or something. Murder, intrigue, dragonmarked houses joining forces against some unknown evil...it practically writes itself. This will be waaay better than dancing!"

As they walked away from the scene of combat, Arleth found that her hands were shaking. She'd very rarely seen combat before, and usually she ran from it. She tucked her hands deep into her vest pockets to cover it up.

Remembering the strange oil she'd taken from their enemy, Arleth pulled it out and sniffed it. Wrinkling her nose, she said, "This, I think, is not for people. Can it be of use to you?"

Arleth led them, finally, to The Little Plate. She spent a few luxurious moments in the drybox, and came out feeling significantly better. How the drybox creature knew so much about drying hairstyles was beyond her, but she appreciated it. Not that Arleth's cornrow braids needed much styling, but still.

Despite the rain, or perhaps because of it, the restaurant was quite full. But a flutter of Bronwyn's eyelashes and a glimpse of her dragonmark was all it took to get seated. Taking a look at the two massive 'forged, the intimidated looking waiter stammered, "Will that be for two tonight, or for four?"

The meal was, of course, amazing. She indulged with the gold pheasant and sparkle mushrooms, and barely managed to hold back a moan of pleasure. The woman who made the gravy deserved to be given a medal of some sort. Arleth considered indulging in a glass of rainbow wine, but didn't think it was a good idea, as she was still on the job.

As they ate, she asked Bronwyn, "So what exactly brings you to Sharn, ma'am? And how long do you plan to stay? We didn't speak much yesterday about your plans - is there anything particular you want to see or experience?"

Arleth stared at the vanished figure for a moment, wondering why on earth he had approached them. No way to know without more information. The thief in her was curious - perhaps the dead man was rich, and if they found out more about him, specifically where he lived, there could be some good looting to be had. On the other hand, that mechanical hummingbird had freaked her out a little, and she didn't know if she wanted to get further involved.

Finally shrugging inwardly, she turned to her client and said, "Well, what do you think? The Broken Anvil is known more for local ales and chewy breads than for dancing, but if you want a taste of Sharn mystery, this is as good an opportunity as you're likely to get."

Squeak luxuriated at the experience of being in actual restaurant. His head swivelled around to track every dish that processed out of the beautifully carved wooden doors to the kitchen. His head occasionally elevated to catch the air, or to stare as someone cut open some sauce-soaked masterwork, hoping to deduce the texture. Carefully he processed every gesture, every sigh, trying to deduce the enjoyment the various patrons experienced from the food.

Squeak's mind boggled at the thought of living so long, before he remembered the extreme age of some humans. "You are designated as Bronwyn." he lied "And I will respect that."

He answered Arleth when Browyn had finished. "Bronwyn's protection is primary. I am interested in continuing my work. To that end I have acquired a modest apartment at the base of the 'Cockatoo Tower'." the blithe nature with which he named the location indicated he was unaware of the stigma of the neighbourhood - "I have set up our workshops there, and of course clothes, sleeping facilities, toilet facilities and a kitchen."

He looked at Arleth and continued "What would you like me to make you for breakfast tomorrow? I would be interested in trying to duplicate some of the lighter meals tonight for breakfast, but I have been complimented several times on my trifle."

"Statement. Red is ineffective color for blending in and avoiding detection," Palisade grunted, giving the other 'forged a steady, unblinking stare - the only kind it could. "Damage is repairable and will not lead to immediate loss of function. This one trusts fully on unit Squeak's capabilities to effect repairs."

Palisade hesitated at Lady d'Deneith's command. It was definitely improper to refer to one's commanding officer with her given name, but on the other hand, it was a lawful command - or would soon be, if Lady d'Deneith figured out that's what would be needed. "Complying," it replied stiffly, living in the hope the Lady would eventually forget her own order.

Good stuff everyone. I think I'll add a scene where Arleth leads them to Squeak's apartment but it's in a very bad part of town.

OK, so I have some time before I leave this morning...

------------
It had stopped raining up above, where they had dinner at a fine establishment and were almost killed by a crazy warforged. Arleth led them to Cockatoo Tower where Squeak had arranged for accommodations for a couple of days. Arleth told them that it wasn't the best part of town but Squeak insisted...

Rain streamed down at the base of the tower here in Lower Sharn. Everbright lanterns were spaced widely along the street, covered in an oily grime even the rain couldn’t wash away. The light they cast was sickly and jaundiced, and so faint that all they did was create thick pools of lurking shadow for the cutpurses to hide in.

It always rained here. Even when the sky was clear up above, the runoff from the upper wards—sluice water, condensation, sweat, and slops—all blended into a muggy mixture that trickled down the mile high buildings and fell over the lower wards in a fine, misty drizzle that made the skin feel oily. You couldn’t shake that feeling—as if you were coated in a constant sheen of grease and dirt.

They had arrived at Squeak's place...

The year of Bronwyn? Arleth hid a smile. She couldn't wait to be Violet, and tell her sister. Mae loved to hear stories of the privileged, so she could mock them. How rich do you have to be in order to have a year of fun? At least this boded well for her future finances.

Arleth filed away the information for later. She had heard of both of these pursuits, but had no actual first-hand knowledge of them. She could get some information from Tanis in the morning. Nodding, she said, "I can certainly arrange both of those for you."

Arleth weighed her curiousity at experiencing more of the 'forged's cooking vs her slight horror at imagining his preparation techniques. Deciding, as she usually did, in favor of widening her experiences, she smiled and nodded. "Generally, trifle and other sweets are saved for tea or dessert. But if you know how to do anything with eggs, I'd love to try it."

Action 3

Arleth had never been to Lower Sharn, though Jorlyn had spent weeks there at a time, hiding out and reinforcing connections with various shady characters. She certainly didn't miss the slimy rain down here - it would take more than a drybox to feel clean again.

Entering the small apartment, she saw that it was pretty typical for the neighbourhood. She was surprised that Bronwyn assented to staying here - maybe she wasn't as rich as she thought.

Looking curiously at the 'forged's tools, she said, "It's handy that you can repair yourselves. Do you mind if I watch?"

Action 1
Squeak cocks his head back and forth, producing a loud 'crack' noise. He stands straighter and mimes breathing deeply as they walk through the fetid rain - though he is careful to hold the umbrella for Bronwyn. "Nice to be home!" he announces loudly and in Dwarven.

"Yes, you may watch Arleth. Do you have an interest in mechanics? It's so much cleaner than working on animals. The fluid in Pallisade isn't pressurised, so it only oozes out, rather than spurting up and coating the ceiling."

"I need to buy some eggs before breakfast. Something fresh laid. My experiments show the optimal egg age for poaching, with the temperature we've been having, is roughly 18 hours. Ms... Bronwyn also enjoys fresh milk with her coffee, so it would be good to find some. Fortunately the locals run a small market at night that sells excellent produce at reasonable prices. They also have an excellent chicken butcher next to their cock fighting ring"

Action 2
Squeak, never entirely comfortable in social situations, fell back on old habits. He lurked to Bronwyn's left, massive and intimidating, and let the human do the talking.

Action 3
Squeak did his best to hold back his sudden surge of interest. 'Foundry? Cannith?' desperately he stared at Bronwyn, doing his best to will her into agreement through sheer will.

construction metabolism from the site you linked to says this:

Warforged do not heal hit points or attribute damage naturally, but can be repaired with use of the Craft skill or with effects that repair constructs. Repairs made with the Craft skill take 8 hours and a warforged repair kit. The amount of hit point damage repaired per check is the result of the Craft check -15. Repairing a point of attribute damage requires 8 hours and a Craft check, DC 25. Repairing both hit point damage and one point of ability damage can done during the same 8 hour period, but still requires two different checks. Appropriate Craft skills include armorsmithing, blacksmithing, gemcutting and sculpting. A conscious warforged can repair itself.

with a roll of 18, that would be 8 hours for 3 points of damage. Presumably Palisade could also make a roll to heal a little more. On a good roll the repairs could proceed quite quickly.

Well, you at 2nd level rolled with a +16 on that craft skill check so on an average roll of 10, that would mean 11 points of damage healed and that's without adding a +2 from aid another. So I think it may be too much of an advantage.

In the same amount of time a 2nd level would only heal 2 hit points.

So I'm trying to reconcile the two.

And even allowing warforged to recover 2 hp per level may be an advantage because this world has spells/items that perform as CLW for humanoids.

Further thoughts?

Observation. Internal workings messy, lacking proper redundancy on multiple levels. Primary functions needlessly complicated and difficult to repair with spare parts. Suggestion. Re: Fabian's question... well, there should be some way to heal a 'forged, since spells won't work on them normally (unless you have an Artificer around, but then again, he can't heal non-'forgeds all that well). But a good repair score can get wild results, aye... How about allowing a 'forged to heal 1HP/level/8 hours of repairs, and hold the need for a roll?

And since we spend the night in Squeak's house, Palisade can use its spell slots to finish what the repairs left lacking.

Action 2

Fabian wrote:

Palisade took position on Lady d'Deneith's (it had not been forbidden of thinking of her as the Lady, after all) right flank, staring down at the woman. She wore the signet ring of the Makers, but did not claim the name for herself. Using the signet without permission would be inadvisable - the House would not take kindly to anyone using its name without leave and had the means to make any felon's life both painful and brief. Palisade deemed it slightly more likely that she was working on the House of Making's leave and decided it should affod her at least a token amount of courtesy, as a servant of the House of its Goddess.

Well I'm suggesting something a little better to make up for the fact that normal healing only works half as well in warforged.

I'm proposing 2HP/level/8 hours of repairs without the need for a repair roll but 'repairs have to be made'. That is you need to have the time to do the repairs, much like humanoids need the time to rest to heal naturally. But since warforged don't sleep, we can say that when the humanoid PCs rest/sleep, the warforged repairs himself.

Action 1:

Bronwyn wrinkled her nose as they traversed the streets of lower Sharn. The rain was gag-worthy and the smell verged on putrid. Thankfully Squeak was holding her umbrella so her hands were free to lift her skirt to keep her dress from being ruined but her boots weren't so lucky. In trying to avoid the disgusting water raining down on them, she had to keep a little closer to Squeak as usual. You're welcome :)

Bronwyn scurried inside when they arrived. "Ugh! I think my boots are wrecked. I don't think I'll ever get the smell of lower Sharn out of them, even with magic." With that, she gestured with her hands and passed them over her boots. Almost immediately the boots looked clean but there was still a faint unpleasant smell to them.

As Squeak and Palisade worked to repair Palisade's injuries, Bronwyn used her most useful spell, taught early on in her studies, to clean before each step she took. "I guess this will be tolerable. At least it's dry. Everyone should slum it once in their life too, right? I've been told it builds character...but I'm reserving judgment for now." Addressing Squeak she said, "This was not what I was expecting when you told me you'd arranged a place to stay."

Bronwyn is prestidigitationing the heck out of Squeak's place.

After she deemed it safe to finally sit down, she began to get bored. Arleth was busy with the warforged so there wasn't even anyone really to talk to. She created a flame in the palm of her hand and entertained herself with fire while the others worked. Soon there was a pleasant fire burning in the fireplace.

Assuming there's a fireplace or a way of heating the place of some sort.

I'm re-reading the Eberron novels again and they said that it was 'bells'; I'm guessing that it goes from 1 to 24 although it doesn't say.

I did catch your 'wrong assumption' and corrected it in the turn recap. :)

As for the fifth person, I also like the dynamic that we have going but sometimes new people are good as well. I met some good players by just taking a chance and this is pretty safe because I already have four 'decent' players. :P

Arleth chuckled. The machines really were quite clever; she couldn't imagine the amount of magic and mechanics that went into programming them. She watched avidly for an hour or so, asking the occasional question. Finally, she realized how late it was.

"It is time for me to be off. I'll come by in the morning, around eight bells. I look forward to trying your eggs," she said to Squeak. Then she left the rather squalid apartment.

She made her way to the nearest lift, and headed up as quickly as possible. Jorlyn may not mind spending time down in lower Sharn, but he was the only Face that didn't.

It looked like she was going to be spending more time with Bronwyn and her pet machines than she'd anticipated. Which was good, as the job paid pretty well. But it meant making some adjustments to her schedule.

She made her way to one of her many bolt-holes, and sat down to write a few notes. Looks like Bappy won't make it to work the next few days, better let Chastogar know. And Snak isn't going to make it to the mail room for the next few days. Best pretend she's sick. I'll let them know too. Amelia has nothing scheduled this week anyway, that's everything important.

She checked the schedule in her notebook to make sure she hadn't missed anything important, then considered where to spend the night. It was a bit late to go back to her parents; as much as she'd like to tell Mae about her new client, she didn't think her sister would appreciate being kept up late on a school night.

Chirp chirp A small coin in her vest pocket chirped, which meant only one thing. Madame d'Vrae had a request for Tiatha at the guildhall. Tiatha didn't usually work on Zol, but depending on the client, the job could be lucrative. Arleth pressed the center of the coin, indicating her availability. She then made herself ready - she pulled the earrings out of her ears, and the changed her Face.

"Tiatha, Tiatha, Tiatha." The elf woman had long silver hair that she wore in ringlets, and deep violet eyes. She didn't need to use the sketch in her notebook, or the mirror, to know she'd gotten it right. She'd been Tiatha at least once a week for several years now, and was one of her more comfortable Faces.

Tiatha activated the Sleeves to simulate Tiatha's long emerald gown. Putting her notebook in Tiatha's silk handbag, she left the rest of her things in the bolthole, and stepped outside.

The rain had stopped, at least for the moment. It didn't take long for her to signal a skyboat. A few minutes later she was sailing upwards, all the way to Skyway, for what she hoped would be a profitable and enjoyable evening.

Next day

Seven bells came much too early for Tiatha. The night had been less profitable than she'd hoped, but the apprentice banker had been a pleasant and lively companion, and she sensed that he'd go far. It had been a worthwhile contact to make, and she didn't regret the late night.

The Dancer's Guildhall was silent as Tiatha changed her Face back to Arleth. Making sure nobody saw her, she exited the building and made her way to one of the skydocks. It took the full hour to make her way back to the night's bolthole, change her clothes and fetch her weapons, and then descend to lower Sharn to meet her clients. Eight bells were just ringing as she knocked on the door. The smell of eggs made her stomach rumble.

Action 1:

Bronwyn had heard about the troubles plaguing House Cannith, few hadn't. At least now she knew which of the three factions that Elaydren represented.

Elaydren wrote:
She raised her eyebrows, “Are you uncomfortable working for House Cannith? Is there anything I should be aware of? Perhaps past transgressions with the law? Who did the warforged serve?”

Bronwyn assured their host. "Please do not misunderstand my question as hesitance. I hadn't considered our actions last night as anything but the simple defense of our lives. Therefore it never occurred to me that anyone would have been taking note. I'm not uncomfortable working with House Cannith. And I'm sure as you are aware, House Deneith has much respect for the law and so there aren't any problems there. As for Squeak and Palisade, they were part of my father's unit but they served no one."

Action 2:

I think Arleth has the journal so I'll let her take the lead on this unless I'm mistaken and she gave it to Bronwyn.

Action 2

Arleth was surprised when Bronwyn turned to her, expecting her to have the diary. She remembered picking it up last night to have a quick peak, but the 'capes had arrived too quickly. She'd meant to put it back with the body.

Reaching into her satchel, she opened the secret compartment inside by touch. Sure enough, there was the journal, along with the other things she kept hidden away. She must have taken and stored it by reflex alone. Good thing I did...

Pulling it out, she placed it on the table, but did not release it. "I cannot yet speak to its worth, as I have not finished perusing it," she lied. "If you are willing to pay 'a generous reward' for the heirloom, does this not also merit some sort of finders fee?"

Might as well try to determine if she's hiding something, or perhaps looks a bit too eager to lay her hands on the book...

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Palisade didn't join inthe conversation, but kept its unblinking eye on the woman. Faction warfare within the House? Troubling, yet nothing new. The Dragonmarked heirs had been sacrosanct in the war, untouchable unless they refused to lower their arms when confronted, but the powerful nobles and their kin had found many other avenues to bloody their daggers. While few scions of the Houses had died on the field of battle, they seemed to ever struggle for supremacy between themselves, without and within the walls of their mansions. House Deneith was perhaps the most powerful of all, and getting caught between the intrigues of its Barons was as risky a business as one could imagine.

Interesting question... I don't think we established in which country's army Squeak and Palisade served. Or did we serve in several?

Deneith is originally from Karrnath but all the dragonmarked houses have gone to great lengths to be neutral during the Last War and Deneith supplied mercenary units to everyone.

So, my first guess is that you were made for either Cyre (now gone) or Breland since they were the ones that used most warforged units. However, given that you ended up in the service of Deneith, anything is possible.

Explore this among yourselves and come up with an answer.

Action 2
Squeak discretely looked around as Arleth bartered. 'If she tries to take it by force... who is the threat to take out first?'

Thoughts?

You're the GM.

I like the repair nature with the roll. Don't want it to be abusive.
Remember +5 of the +16 is a first level spell slot.
On a decent roll, in 1 hour Squeak can heal deadly wounds (at DC 25, admittedly) for level+int.
If he provides care for 8 hours the patient heals an additional +level hp, or 2xlevel for an entire day of rest.
Just using the standard rules with "only heals if repaired" and "requires a crafts roll rather than heal" sounds good. Minor repairs quickly, 2xlevel/8 hours, 4xlevel/day.
Also - how fast do warforged heal nonlethal damage? The standard rate?

Bronwyn's eyes lit up at the demonstration of magic before her. "That's absolutely brilliant! Does it only work with your ring or any House Cannith ring? How did he get the information on the pages?"

Action 2:

Bronwyn's nose inadvertently wrinkled at the mention of sewers. "If it's below the sewer system, does that mean we have to go through the sewers?"

"So will you tell us what we're looking for or does that information only come after we agree to help you? Any potential hurdles that we'll need to get around that you know of?"

Arleth felt her cheeks begin to colour as she realized that her bluff had been called, but she managed to suppress the blush by Changing her face just slightly. Her estimation of Lady Elaydren increased when the woman gracefully ignored her blunder.

Action 2

Arleth searched her memory, but came up blank. "Dorasharn Tower? Where is that? I've never heard of it before."

I'm a bit confused - are the Cogs lower than the sewers? In some webpages it seems that the sewers are in the Depths, and then the Cogs are lower still, but others describe the Depths as being the bottom layer of the Cogs. I'll have more to say once I get that straightened out in my head.

Here's a good map for you that should clarify: Sharn layer by layer I think the cogs are the sewers. Or, rather, the ancient ruins of Ja'Shaarat Sharn was built on.

seems like I picked a bad name. Should we change it? Could have been a slang term, I guess. Are there cockatoos in Eberron?

If you were to work for the benefit of the whole House, you would have sought audience with the Baron first. Query. What reason can you provide to make risking the ire of the Maker's house worth considering?"

I guess the sense motive didn't ping anything, so the woman at least appears to be on the straight and level.

Not trying to derail the adventure before we start, but to me this sounds like a very, very bad deal... pissing off Merrix in his own city by stealing artifacts on behalf of another Cannith Baron who wants to take the throne for himself.

If you made the place up, we could always say it's a local nickname for the place, wherever it happens to be on the official map ;^)

“The relic I seek is an adamantine plate in the shape of a seven-pointed star about the size of your hand,” Elaydren explained. “It has no special power by itself, but is an ancient schema—a piece of a pattern used by the Cannith artificers of old to craft unusual items. Recover this piece of history for us, and House Cannith will be extremely grateful.”

She shrugged, "It is my belief that the house's differences will be reconciled in the short term and that everyone will see that the branch in Aundair is best suited to drive the House into this new era of peace."

She added, "However, I understand why you would be reluctant to help. I can offer you no more reassurances other than to be straight forward and transparent regarding our deal."

Yes, there are cockatoos in Eberron. Feel free to place the tower anywhere you want since what we described is pretty much what 'Lower Sharn' is like. Good section map Caleb. Thanks.

She was honest, "No, I do not think so. In the same way that we are not aware of all the business of the other two branches of the House."

She cocked her head, "If you think that this is more than you can handle then I will not force you. Am I offering you a job. You are not going inducted into House Cannith. Not at this time anyway."

"Just say the word and I'll pay you for recovering the journal for me."

She didn't answer my question about where dorasharn tower is yet. Thanks for the map - I was using this one, which wasn't jiving with the descriptions.

Arleth considered the offer. She couldn't see a downside. She was going to be busy with Bronwyn anyway - this way she would be getting paid twice: once for the guiding, and once for the quest. If she got in the middle of the some House faction drama, she could always abandon the Arleth Face if necessary. She didn't have that much invested in it.

"We will need an advance up front, to purchase whatever supplies we'll need to for the trip down, and for possible bribes." She'd only been down the Cogs once before, and it had been a whole other world in and of itself. She couldn't count on her city knowledge to help her overmuch down there. "How do we get in contact with you when we've found it?"

She will. Patience! :)

I'll hit my tags in the recap which I intend to send out later tonight.

BTW, I've selected a new player to join us which I also hope to introduce later tonight.

Questions?

Hi all, this is G-Unit the new player Fabian selected. I've really enjoyed reading your posts and will strive to meet the RP standards you've set.

A little bit about me, I am from the Midwestern portion of the United States close to Chicago. I have been roleplaying since the 1980's and really enjoy the pbp format. I've made many great friends over the gaming table and hope to make many more.

Looking forward to playing with you all and getting to know you better. As well as having a good time
