"This one, surely." Cassandra's whisper taunts Roshan. The numbers didn't add up, and the nondescript noble had left herself wide open. Without Conwall in the room, the temptation set Roshan's teeth grinding. She had spent hours in this crampt room reading through accounting sheets.

Taking the pitcher of water and cloth from the table, Roshan walks to the chair in the middle of the room and pours Lady Jodithas a glass of water. "My lady, you are not the first to come and speak to me in this makeshift confessional."

Inquisitor: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 5) + 3 = 9

While the lady drinks, Cassandra seccures her ankles to the chair. While she sputters in shock, a belt loops down around her shoulders and the chair tips back.

"Lady Jodithas... for one so focused on the plague efforts, you seem to be misplacing a lot of gold. Were you not able to hire a cunning scribe to forge your documents? You wouldn't have been the first."

Not waiting for an answer, the pitcher's drip cloth, damp with condensation, is draped over the woman's face, and Roshan pours water from the pitcher over the cloth. For those unaware, this is called waterboarding.

"I have no greater priority than the end of this crisis, and a return to normalcy." These three were hard to pick from. I really could have used that 10+, but Roshan's getting impatient.

To be perfectly clear, Roshan is torturing this one because she's getting impatient. I don't see her being capable of sitting through all of these interviews, and she sees Conwall's absence as an opportunity to crack without anyone seeing. Waterboarding is seriously not a cool thing to do, and nothing here even attempts to justify it.

It didn’t take long for Roshan to lose interest in the process. As the woman’s defenses eroded and the layers of humanity peeled away, the templar didn’t feel the usual exhilaration. The stench of vomit made things worse. The baleful moans the woman issued when Roshan turned to consider her blades only grated her further. Was that really what was missing? Would she be any happier if the Lady were bleeding? It had never been an issue before. A preference, perhaps, but it never gotten in the way. Now, she just felt restless… Hollow.

Roshan tastes blood as she bites into the meat of her cheek. She hadn’t spent any of her reserve of righteous wrath since the paltry display for the guards, yet she still sought penance.

When the woman finally breaks, Roshan is sitting in one slightly damp seat and begins wiping the bile from Lady Jodithas’ face with the cloth. “There, there. That was not so hard was it? Now, I have a great many questions, and you haven’t left me with much time to ask them, but I think if we’re both patient, and cooperative, we can have the truth out and we can begin to build an amenable path forward. Now, you say the plague was necessary. What exactly do you mean by that, and who evinced you of this? What do you know about Sarah’s designs to burn the plague-infested streets- how is that to be carried out, and what progress has been made? Furthermore, I will need from you every incriminating bit of information you have on your enemies, Enrel and Raloralei. Bringing this truth to me, especially substantive, physical evidence, is how you will serve your penance to your people. For if we are to make a world without Gods, we must be accountable to each other. She says to her torture victim without an ounce of irony.

Roshan lights a stick of incense to clear the air of the smell of vomit. The blades arranged on the table made this a place of rest. The physical effects of Roshan's work would fade quickly. The mental effects, as both templar and initiate knew, would be permanent.

"Mop the floor of this mess, initiate. We will need to be prepared for Perrora, the lion, and this Godless sheep must be given time to collect her penance." Turning to Jodithas, she says: "Age does not equate to strength. For all our fragility, man is capable of more than anything that has come before. Beasts, Gods, and Elder Things fall at the heel of man's ingenuity. Playing in to their bluster only puts you on the wrong side of this conflict. The only thing Iartis fears more than the plague is to be seen cowering behind these walls. Orilanae was cowed by the first higher power she encountered. Aveqwyn is so meek as to be non-existent. Lorosrin doesn’t understand he is a servant of the people. Giselona couldn’t stand to make the hard decisions leadership requires. The Duches can’t even sneeze without asking for a consensus…” Roshan’s gaze slides to Cassandra and she traces a circle in the air with her finger. No amount of gold will summon a way to cure so many, and to hear of their suffering, many of them won’t recover even were their blood clean of the disease. -but that’s the point, I would guess. Above the destruction of the lower class- the... burdens to the state, this plague is most effective in striking fear and doubt into the hearts and minds of those with a voice without silencing them. Quite cunning, actually. Someone in my position would be tempted to take advantage.

In any case, Lord Perrora, as I said, I have no intention of pestering you with questions. I see the truth of the situation. Do let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

Cassandra quietly opens the door.

If it's not clear, Roshan wants to get him caught conspiring against the Duches. Lots of ways for that to go poorly. I'd like to stay out of prison long enough to get to Ralorelei though,
I've got something planned...

I tumble close to the critter, trying to contort my body to not hit the guard.

I catch the little hateball, but in my haste I tangle the feet of the guard. He, the monster and I all tumble down the stairs. I have it in my grasp, but I'll need to untangle myself and get up in order to do anything.

Still here, waiting to see what the beastie does after Ron pokes it.

Roshan

I have no doubt, Miss kaur, that you have called me a kiser, or a craven, to the others, hen you told them the same story. He says.

Furthermore , I would like to take this little meeting as an opportunity to tell you just how loathsome you are, foreigner. just another wastrel from the western lands, praying to your dead gods. I would like nothing better than to drive you and your cadre of- He is cut off by Cassie, smashing a bottle over his head, knocking him out cold. what do you do?

Conwall

a few bruises and scrapes and confused detangling of limbs, and you are on your feet, holding the imp-thing by the neck. atop the stairs, there is an individual (if forced to guess, you would say woman) in off white. An elf... How are you in here? She says, extending one hand to the right. The wards are intact... A deserter, I suppose. She says. what do you do?

Ron

the spear runs the creature through, killing it near instantly.

do you guys go up the stairs, or descend into the passage downward? (or explore the other branch of the tunnel?)

Roshan looks at Cassandra. "Wh-" The templar looks at the lord collapsed and bleeding on the floor. "Wh-" Dropping her utensil and standing abruptly, Roshan looks back up at Cassandra. "I specifically said no blood!"

"Well, I don't know any of your secret hand-language! If I had any magic I could have put him asleep or something. Maybe you should tell me the plan before the bloated pig tries to escape."

"A templar adapts to the findings of the in quisition."

"Okay, teach me how to adapt to a concussed noble, sir."

Ron turns to Belym. I'm lost down here in the damn dark. What should we do Belym?

He then prods the dead body with his foot. These things appear to be resistant to magic. I wish Conwall were with us.

Belym glances at Tom. "Bones of the earth, right? I think we might've hit on a shortcut." She points at the Dwarf-made stairs downward. "I think we need to head that way."

When Ron pokes the creature, Belym replies "Well, they still seem to be vulnerable enough to rocks and spears, at least."

Conwall

Everyone calls me Sarah. The woman says And that "thing" you are holding, is my child.. An orb of white light appears in her hand, and she launches it at you.

Bar the door, Use the stríðsherra Gem! She shouts.

Roshan

in 10 minutes, he will wake, very pissed. in 30, your next meeting will be here, in a few hours, if Perrora gets away, you'll get in trouble for assaulting a noble.

Now that he's on the ground, you see that perrora was armed. only with a dagger, well hidden when he's vertical. He didn't come here in good faith.

He's got a coinpurse.... and a few vials of Goldenroot poison (3 in total)

In the depths

guys, I have 3 new moves for you. if you are descending into the depths, they are about to be very relevant.

F$~!s with your Head
When you lead the group, roll +Wis
on a 10+, gain 1 hold, and another if you venture through an infested area
on a 7-9 gain 1 hold, and venture through an infested area

Spend 2 hold to find a safe place to camp, or 5 to reach the end of the labyrinth

Eyes in the dark
When you guard against the things in the dark, roll +str
on a 10+, your group remains safe
on a 7-9, as above, but:
*You get clawed, bitten, and torn at, take 1d8 damage
*You lose your torch, and need to replace it, mark off two uses of adventuring gear
*Your group takes detours to avoid the monsters, lose 1 FwyH hold

Venture into danger
When you find yourself in a heavily infested area, roll + Con
on a 10+, 2 are true (your choice)
on a 7-9, 3 are (still your choice)

*more are clawing at the door
*You're outnumbered, like 3-1
*The torches are out
*It isn't just the "normal" ones
*You guys are separated
