Cross-posted from Oremor Affliction OOC
Just an FYI guys, I'm off on a long overdue, albeit short, vacation with the family over the next three days, so posting likely will be light, if at all (depends on the presence of wireless where we are staying). Posting should resume by the weekend.
Nice timing, Rook. Half of Hive Fleet Dagon breathing down our neck and you decide to go on vacation.... lol!
Enjoy! ;)

Vex should still be in cover, with Sepheren who moved up to cover my flank.
Sorry Bal, I was going off the "Round #6 Map." It looked to me that you are in partial cover but could move back to the shaded cover.
Anyways the intention of my post was more about revealing Emeric's ambivalence towards psykers than about Vex being out of cover.
Rookseye |
First of all, that was a great post Eradico. You're really bringing Brother Emeric to life. It should be fun to watch his interactions with Brother Vex during some mission downtime at Watch Station Erioch (that is, provided you both survive).
Second thing is that with Hurricane Irene bearing down on us, I have the potential to be losing power or connectivity for today. I will try to post earlier today for that reason, but may not be able to with house prep going on.
It really is kind of weird for me this year; first a tornado, then an east coast earthquake, now a hurricane... it's beginning to make me wonder about all of that 2012 nonsense.
Rookseye |
Well, that was anticlimactic. Prepped and ready, but somewhere along the North Carolina coast on its way to Massachusetts Irene decided to blow herself out. Lots of wind and rain, but thankfully no damage.
Not that I'm complaining, but it is kind of funny. Here's what we've gone through in Massachusetts of all places in the last two months: a tornado, earthquake (sort of, it was felt here) and a hurricane. Have to say I'm grateful we could laugh about all of them after the fact.

Oh, played the Space Marine demo on my PS3 today, and I have to say it is cool for the small sample they give you. Pretty much your typical shooter, but it is viscerally satisfying to feel and hear the bolter fire, doubly so when it turns a charging ork into a fine pink mist.
Rookseye |
You hurt it Bal, that's a start. As a Master Level opponent, it will take all of the Kill-team's efforts to have a chance to defeat it. I rolled fairly bad with the Vanguard Horde's (likely) one round of attacks that could cause considerable damage, so it will soon be eight against one (albeit one, big, bad-ass Tyranid synapse creature).
Ellipsis |
Hate to break it to you Lorm, but according to the errata:
The sentence “If that second attack hits, the attacker may make an additional Damage roll and add it to the Damage total” should change to “If that second attack hits, the attacker may roll one additional Damage dice (1d10) and add it to the Damage total.” The Example should read: “Helgath has hit a heretic with his combat knife and proceeds to make his Damage roll. A combat knife deals 1d10+2 points of Damage, plus 10 for Helgath’s Strength Bonus (modified by his power armour) of 10. Helgath rolls 1d10 and gets a 10 and then adds 12 for a total of 22. In addition, as his dice result was a 10, his attack is also a possible Righteous Fury! Helgath then makes a second attack roll identical to his first, which is a Weapon Skill Test using his Weapon Skill of 45. Helgath rolls a 22, which is a hit! He now rolls one additional Damage dice and gets a 5. Helgath’s Damage total for this attack is 27 (22+5). The Emperor has truly smiled upon Helgath this day.”
Caledonii |
You would normally roll for confirmation on each 10 rolled but because we are marines of the deathwatch against zenos we auto confirm. Lorm just rolled them together and then got an other so rolled again. It fits in the rules and what we have confirmed in the beginning of the postings when I got like 3 furys in a row.
The Omega Vault |
OK, in a sense everyone is correct. The first damage roll is spot on for the first shot. On Brother Quintus' second damage roll, only one of the 10's rolled for the damage counts for the purposes of Righteous Fury for that attack, so ONE additional 1d10 is rolled for that as well. Using Lorm's first die rolled, that adds 8 more damage. Using the 10 first, he would have rolled ONE more additional 1d10 to add more damage, rolling 1d10 again every time he rolled a 10.
If you wish, Lorm, I'll give you the option of re-rolling that Righteous Fury die again to try to get a 10, otherwise you can keep the very solid 8. I offer this because in a sense, you "rolled" both dice at the same time, so "neither" was your actual roll.
So, in short, yes, you can chain scads of damage with a Righteous Fury roll, but no, you cannot use the multiple 10's in the same damage roll and roll a Righteous Fury die for each.

Black Crusade is finally here. Couldn't wait for Amazon this time, so I placed my order with FFG direct.
Deiros |
@Rook, am waiting also for my copy to ship; after reading blood reaver, am inspired to play a chaos space marine :-)
You are not the only one ^^ Iron Warriors or maybe something else like the Dark Tusk chaos marines or the Astral Claws ^^
Have you seen the Astral Claws before they became corrupted totally into chaos ^^ they have a really nice paint scheme and special rules.

OK, now that we are nearly done with Extraction, I'd like to begin the post adventure wrap-up with an OOC discussion.
I feel we did a pretty good shake-down of the rules. Obviously, with its focus on combat and fairly powerful characters, there are substantially more moving parts in the rules than a more investigatory Dark Heresy game. Over all, I feel we availed ourselves pretty well, and thanks to you guys, caught most of the errors I made.
My first topic for discussion, is what did you think of the game mechanically? Is there anything you would like to see done differently with the rule system or the way combats are run? Admittedly, in play-by-post, combats take a little longer to run than at the table, but I really don't see a viable means of speeding them up without losing something along the way. From my point of view, I learned that eight Deathwatch space marines are nothing short of staggeringly powerful in combat together. I tried to scale the difficulty of the various encounters along the way, but felt I may have come up a little bit short on the challenge. What do you think? I will admit it gave me a better idea of what poses a realistic threat to Astartes and what amounts to merely an inconvenience. I like them 'playing powerful' though, they are space marines after all, so I really am pretty good with how things turned out.
Also, what did you think of the story? As you can probably tell (I assume many of you had read Extraction prior to this) I did expand the adventure somewhat in an attempt to tie it in to the larger campaign, The Emperor Protects. Overall, I felt that the Kill-team is coming together quite nicely. It took a little while, but already it seems distinct characters are emerging with a great deal of personality. I will let you know now, Brother Sepheren will be party ways with you before the next mission. From a GM perspective, it makes sense for me to mothball him just to keep the numbers down a little in what is already a pretty sizable Kill-team. He will not be written out of the story completely, and there is a place for him at Watch Station Erioch for the duration of the campaign (and for the possibility that Davi returns and wishes to play again, however remote this may be). With that in mind, I want to let you all know that anyone who wishes to change their character (or even opt-out of the campaign on detached duty for a time, if desired) can do so now without penalty. Being short an apothecary, this lends a possibility for a new character if someone so chooses. Again, these are only options, I am very happy with the roleplaying and characters in the Kill-team as they stand.
Now, on to the good part. Rewards. Unlike Dark Heresy, which has had some convenient points to award XP throughout the game, Deathwatch is a little different, but that time has finally come. Since The Emperor Protects recommends that a battle-brother embarking on its storyline has an additional 1,000 XP on top of what is given at character creation, I'll be awarding you each 1,200 XP for advances. This is actually what you would have earned anyway for meeting (and sometimes exceeding) the Objectives of Extraction. So, consider now where you will assign the points. Everything from both the Deathwatch Core Rulebook and Rites of Battle is within bounds, including some of the Deeds and Elite Advances that require you to pay for them at character creation. If they make good story sense, I will have no objection, and we'll just retcon them into the character. Information on Renown awards will follow once they are tabulated.
I would also like to single out three of the team for bonus XP, but feel a little uncomfortable awarding them myself, as I don't want to be perceived as playing favorites. You guys as a team know who went above and beyond, so please vote below (a simple, but egalitarian process), ranking your top three role-players for the mission in order from 1st to 3rd. Obviously, you can't vote for yourself. The awards will be as follows:
1st: 300 bonus XP
2nd: 200 bonus XP
3rd: 100 bonus XP
As always, this doesn't include bonus XP awarded during the course of play. You already have those, so please feel free to spend any gained in that fashion as well.
So, in summary, let me know what you thought of the campaign so far, and spend that XP.
Before we begin the Emperor Protects there will be period of campaign time which will consist of a more roleplaying/interaction based stretch of gaming at Watch Station Erioch that will allow you to conduct your mission debrief, further explore your characters personal storylines, and delve further into the mystery that is unfolding. So let me know if there are personal objectives or encounters you'd like to pursue during your downtime, and I'll craft the scenes for you.
During this time I will prep the wiki's NPC and Lore updates, as well as begin working on the Objectives, Requisition, and other pertinent data for the next mission.
I hope everyone is enjoying the campaign so far!

Enjoying the campaign so far. Definately alot more rules to get a handle of. Will wait til I can borrow Lorm's Rites of Battle book before I make any choices.
Actually never read the adventure. Didn't want to spoil the story. As for Lyriel's plans once they finish the mission. I honestly have no idea. He will most likely avoid others company. Definately will avoid the Inquistion. Will probably have him fullfill his others roles as Librarian. Write down the knowledge he obtained to pass down to others, and study lore others are not mention to know and for him to safeguard til the knowledge is needed. Will probably avoid the Inquistor. Dark Angels kinda have a habit with that.
As for my votes for best RP's 1) Emeric hands down. 2) Decius, 3) Quintus/Hrothgar real hard to decide.
Lorm Dragonheart |
I think that what we fought was about the right level of toughness. Most of us were wounded and some of us severely. The adventure has been fun, but next time it is someone else's turn to lead. LOL. I think the three for extra xp should be: 1) Emeric, he played the techmarine to the hilt. 2)Decius, his character had a strong presence. 3)Hrothgar/Lyriel the byplay between them with the interchapter rivalry was perfect.
Deiros |
I liked it overall no complains except for my own learning curve of the rules but that is my own problem, but I think I got it decently enough.
For Experience:
1)Emeric: that techmarine was AWESOME I loved his roleplaying and the way he managed him, afterall he had the best performance in my accord.
2)Hrothgar/Lyrel: I have no idea who is better they roleplayed a very archetypical marine of their chapter in so many ways and sense that it was amazing. Decius my get along better with Hrothgar because of the "tribal" thing but Lyrel was pretty good in the role of a Dark Angel keeping his secret and being on the verge of suspicious but at the same time just making me think he was just a silent person. Who ever gets the 2 place the other gets third.
Thank you for saying I was second place even tho I hit a rough patch with Emeric since it is a common thing that they are looked with some suspicion for they "worship" 2 things.
I was hoping to keep up with such an amazing group of role players, I have been reading Dark heresy a lot more but it just didn't appeal to me in the end I think, but they way Rook narrates the scenes is inspiring and the way and level of role playing is very good I did felt challenged to try to be decent enough for the group as a late add-on.
Well now back to work lol I have to prepare my own campaign for my first game at these forums XD
As far as advancements I'm taking this ones for now:
Dodge 300 (Space Marine)
Mighty Shot 600 (Chapter)

Deiros, that was perfect to call Emeric on the carpet for his belief in the Omnissiah. I hope we can flesh out chapter differences even more in the future!
To all: honored by the compliments. To be honest, "subscribing" to the Oremor Campaign has been a real inspiration for me. (Rook promises that I'll eventually get in the Oremor game... I'll believe it when I see it, LOL). Also the bonus points are nice but my efforts with Emeric are a labor of love. Rook, it's a real compliment to you in that you create space for collaborative story-writing. If a player goes on a tangent you don't chide them for it, you run with it. I love how organic the whole process is. It is an example where the whole is truly greater than the sum of the parts.
Rook, you brought up a lot of really good questions regarding future play with the above post and I will try to address them later this week with a thoughtful reply.
My votes:
1. Hrothgar -- I really liked the exuberance of the young Space Wolf. Provided a nice contrast to all us dour Space Marines. Talking about mead and banquets and dragons and taking trophies. Loved it.
2. Decius -- Because he has that heroic Space Marine speech down! And was always adding Iron Snake fluff. Good stuff.
3. Vex -- Great job of presenting a unique personality: detached, almost jaundiced. Wants to go in, get the job done quickly, efficiently and without fanfare.
Looking forward to continuing!!

Happy birthday Rook!
Definitely liking the campaign so far, it is a nice change of pace form the Oremor Affliction, much more visceral.
My nominees are:
1. Emeric for going above and beyond in roleplaying the techmarine and Black Templar
2. Hrothgar for portraying the aggression and feral nature of the Space Wolves
3. Decius for portraying a unique marine and tradition
As far as Eli is concerned, the options presented in the Rites of Battle make his build options somewhat obsolete and I would be keen on a bit of rebuilding if that would be possible. I don't want to give him up as a character, but that could include a lateral move into Apothecary (after all, what specialty is more likely to make a marine as jaded as he is?).

To piggy-back, one comment I would make on the game is that it seems fairly tech-dependent. I'm wondering if someone on the kill-team would want to take Tech-Use as an elite advance. That way more than one of us can operate the vox in difficult conditions, open locked vaults, etc. Just a thought.
Also.. Happy birthday, Rook. Hope it's a good one!
Kaltos Havelock |
Taking simple BS for 500 and Dodge for 300, and Interrogation for 400.
My top 3 are again at the top Emeric then Hrothgar and last but not least Lyrel.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, everyone, I had a great day.
I elected to update the Oremor Affliction with the free time tonight, but would also like to chime in here on a few things since everyone took the time to comment on the campaign and their character intentions.
As far as the bonus XP awards go, here are the results (assuming 3 points for a 1st place vote, 2 for a 2nd place vote, and 1 for a 3rd place vote):
- 1. Brother Emeric: 15 points. I have to agree here, great job roleplaying Emeric, Eradico. I'm glad the players agree, as they just validate what my vote would be for this session. 300 XP
- 2. Brother Hrothgar: 10 points. Really enjoyable watching the young Wolf coming into his own, Rad. The combination of braggadocio, humor, and enthusiasm, as well as being the change of pace amongst a group of marine peers that are grim and serious almost to a man is fun to watch. 200 XP
- 3. Brother Decius: 8 votes. I'm glad you could join the game, Deiros, I felt that the surprise appearance of the sole surviving Iron Snake on Tantalus really was one of the high points of the session. Your extra effort with the Chapter creation was exemplary. 100 XP
This is not to take away from anyone else either, as I felt the roleplaying was tremendous from everyone given the fact that the mission was more combat focused and did not lend itself particularly well to a lot of face to face interaction. Great job guys!
Ellipsis |
Just to note, all of our marines already possess Dodge as a starting skill (per p. 36 Deathwatch) so you guys can use that experience for something else.
Rebuilt, Eli is an Apothecary with the following advances:
Paranoia [500]
Advance - Basic Intelligence [200]
Ciphers (Xenos Markings) [200]
Advance - Simple Agility [500]
Advance - Simple Ballistic Skill [500]
I have 300 left over, and would be willing to spend at least some of that on acquiring Corvis power armor as an Advance.
As far as back story goes, his change in profession shouldn't put a crimp in any of the preexisting facts. In fact, since Apothecaries are not in any of the traditional 10 companies it would be easier to cast him as a lone wolf tasked with assassination (where anatomical knowledge would come in handy) or leading ad hoc bands of recruits.
Ryuk |
For Rook
Simple WS (200) to 47
Simple Str (200) to 54
Simple Ag (200) to 50
Simple Per (200) to 54
Intermediate WS (500) to 52
Total XP Spent 1300
I am reserving the 100 for another day. I figure that Hrothgar's fighting style would involve avoiding being hit rather than soaking up the damage, though I plan to raise his Toughness when the next opportunity presents itself.
Btw, would you agree that the Sanguinary Guard Distinction found on page 97 of Rites of Battle can also be used to represent the Wolf Guard?
As a final question, wouldn't it be better if Hrothgar's past be that of Fenris Hunter rather than Wolf-Tamer?
